India To Climate Cartel: Count Us Out

Sometimes a story gets buried not because editors conspire against it, but because the news cycle has room for only one crisis at a time. This year the big news has been the Iran war. But even accounting for competing headlines, the silence around a genuinely consequential development is telling.

And that is the story of India’s explicit rejection of the global net zero movement. India has walked away from its bid to host the COP33 UN climate conference, and the world’s climate press has treated it as a footnote rather than the signal it is.

India had spent years projecting a rising voice in the development of climate policy, and hosting a COP33 is the closest thing the bureaucracy has to a coronation. Then, quietly, without public explanation, India withdrew its offer. No press conference. No elaboration. Just a government stepping back from a role for which it auditioned for years.

The truth is India has run the numbers on the cost of a net zero energy transition for a population of 1.4 billion climbing out of poverty, and it does not like what it sees. The notion that India should shackle its economy by adhering to restrictive climate policies, while its people still grapple with energy deficits, is illogical and morally indefensible.

Data India Doesn’t Need a Summit to See

Furthermore, the narrative of a rapidly degrading Indian environment due to energy consumption is demonstrably false. India’s own environmental indicators do not support the apocalyptic framing of the climate obsessed.

For years, hydrologists and climate modelers have relied on Himalayan snowfall estimates to forecast water availability for hundreds of millions of people across South Asia’s most fertile Ganges plains. Their projections of a seriously drier India, it turns out, were wrong.

A team of researchers, including scientists from the British Antarctic Survey, the U.K. Met Office, and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, used frozen high-altitude lakes as natural pressure sensors rather than relying on undersized conventional rain gauges. What they found was startling: In a single winter, the best available snowfall models had underestimated seasonal snow over the Lake Hampta area of Himachal Pradesh by 37%. The peer-reviewed study makes clear that conventional instruments have been missing large volumes of snow for decades.

Then there is the vegetation story, which cuts even harder against the doom narrative. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology modeled how India’s landscape would respond to a high-emissions future using the same family of computer models climate activists cite when warning of catastrophe.

The result was not desertification. It was the opposite. Gross primary production, a measure of how much carbon dioxide India’s forests, croplands, and other vegetation are absorbing, rose from roughly 729 grams of carbon per square meter annually in 1985 to about 830 by 2014 and is projected to nearly double to around 1,305 by the year 2100.

Layered onto that are the steady expansion of India’s forest cover over the past two decades and the recovering populations of endangered species such as tigers and Asiatic lions, successes resulting from conservation and habitat management rather than from decarbonization mandates.

All this means India has stopped outsourcing its environmental judgment to a U.N. process that treats every barrel of oil and every ton of coal as a moral affront, regardless of its benefit in lighting a clinic for children or powering a steel plant that employs thousands. A country that still has hundreds of millions of citizens without reliable access to electricity does not have the luxury of treating energy poverty as an acceptable trade-off for leadership in the climate industrial complex.

That is why India has expanded coal production and struck oil and gas deals with the United States and Persian Gulf producers. It has resisted binding emissions targets that would cap its own industrial growth, unwilling to commit to far-off targets for emission reductions. India’s relinquishment of COP33 hosting rights is perhaps the most visible expression of a strategic direction that has been building for years.

A country that the entire architecture of climate financing is supposedly built to help just declined to host the party. If climate summits worked as advertised, that would be unthinkable. But it is no longer, and pretending otherwise will not make the next withdrawal any less predictable.

Indians are neither stupid nor foolish. They know what works and what doesn’t. But not remaining for the Grift does resemble foolishness. They obviously realize though that the Grift was to come from the USA Climate Reparations fund…that doesn’t exist!

The only reason why developing countries signed up to the Paris Agreement was that they were promised free money to do so. It is now pretty obvious that no climate “reparations” are going to be paid. The big western countries are basically bankrupt and there is no spare money for this nonsense.

Agreed. But based on what is arguably a small sample size, many Indian immigrants (and their children) here in the West seem disposed to socialism, presumably because many of them have been so indoctrinated within the West’s ‘elite’ universities.

The linked article at news.net titled “New Delhi Withdraws Bid for COP33 Amid Silence on Reasons” is headed by a large photo, almost as large as the text itself, of billowing smoke stacks that an image search traces to an article from 2016 at Climate Home News “an independent English-language digital newsroom whose aim is to inform audiences and inspire action on the climate crisis and the global energy transition”.
The original photo is titled: A coal complex in the city of Yulin China (credited to Nian Shan/Greenpeace) and has nothing to do with the contents of the article.

It is also not hard to imagine that the very capable scientists and engineers and meteorologists in India have also “run the numbers” to foresee that the “climate” movement is no more than a fashion trend that will eventually pass. What numbers? That ~4 W/m^2 “warming” tendency of the 2XCO2 case is negligible – vanishingly weak – in the proper context of dynamic energy conversion within the general circulation.

Another problem for renewables in India is its population density… some 500 people/km² (more than 3 times that of China)

Wind and solar take up a lot of space, so where do you put it where it doesn’t affect human populations.

Windmills are not a good idea, except perhaps in remote locations where they can be used intermittently to pump the water back up to hydroelectric dams.
However, solar panels or solar tiles on the roofs of all suitable home dwellings could provide an enormous amount of electricity in a country with 1.4 billion people, without wasting any space that could be used for other purposes, and without the need for long transmissions lines.

As Sodium-ion battery technology progresses, and the manufacturing scales up, resulting in a lower price, the intermittency problem for suburban home dwellers should be solved.

There is a fundamental problem with your suggestion: funding. With 1.4B people, there’s not a lot of per capita spending available to the government. For individuals average monthly income in India ranges from a high of $421 around Delhi to a low of $145 (or less) on offshore islands.

Not a lot of margin to invest in solar panels, inverters, much less storage. As in Bangladesh, a majority of the country lives at subsistence levels.

Yes. It’s obvious that poor people in less developed countries are unable to afford lots of things, and that certainly includes roof-top solar panels, unless they are very heavily subsidized by governments, through taxes on the wealthy.

However, we’re discussing the best trajectory for the future.

As I understand, but correct me if I’m wrong, the fundamental requirements for a prosperous nation are related to the true cost of energy, taking everything into consideration, such as the health consequences of pollution, the construction and maintenance of long transmission lines, the destruction resulting from fires caused by falling power lines, the toxic waste and environmental disruption from the mining of fuels, and so on.

As all WUWT readers should know, excluding the true cost of the intermittency of solar energy is a major flaw in the LCOE claim that renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels.

So, imagine a closely packed suburb in India, consisting of thousands of homes, all built with flat roofs oriented towards the sun, and all entirely covered with solar tiles with a 40 year warranty, and all connected with underground transmission lines to a nearby Sodium-ion battery storage unit, and all homes fitted with electric appliances for all purposes, such as cooking, heating, cooling, recharging BEVs, and so on.

The questions that needs to be asked is, which use of fossil fuels is more efficient?
1. Using fossil fuels to build, use and maintain clean coal, gas or nuclear power plants, plus long-distance power lines, to supply electricity over a 40 year period to the thousands of homes in a well-connected suburb, or:

2. Using, I suspect, a lower amount of fossil fuels required to manufacture the solar tiles and sodium-ion batteries required to supply reliable electricity to the same number of connected homes in the example suburb I’ve mentioned.

If it’s not true that less fossil fuels are required to provide the same electricity requirements through the use of solar tiled roofing in my example suburb, taking everything into consideration, then one could argue that there’s no point in spending energy to build solar panels, solar tiles, and battery storage, even if one assumes CO2 emissions are bad.

Solar panels produce electricity in a narrow time band and lose much of that production when hot, so much of India which has tropical or subtropical climate would seem poorly suited in that respect. Wouldn’twork too well in monsoon season either.

I doubt that batteries “fix” that, and battery installations and related fires in densely populated areas would be catastrophic.

The other negative of adding worse-than-useless solar to the grid is that it discourages the construction of what is actually needed – 24/7 generation.

Indian govt is a true believer in Climate Change Clean Energy irrespective of the decision to host or not host COP33. They have slowed down construction of any non-green power and are banking a great deal on solar. They are also big on electric vehicles including electric buses (which cost multiple times the regular bus, a luxury indeed for a poor country.)

Net Zero Green Energy Ideologists are OBLIVIOUS to reality the “Energy Transition” is only an “Electricity Transition”.
 
To start with, there is no such thing as “renewable” energy, as it violates the First Law of Thermodynamics. Electricity from wind turbines and solar panels are 100% dependent on favorable weather conditions offered by free wind and sunshine.
 
Wind turbines and solar panels ONLY generate electricity but CANNOT make any products or transportation fuels for life as we know it.
 
Crude oil by itself is useless black tar, unless you build a multi-billion-dollar refinery to break it down to produce various types of transportation fuels like, jet fuel for planes, diesel fuel for trucks, gasoline fuel for cars, and bunker fuel for ships, and the oil derivatives manufactured from crude oil  that are the basis of more than 6,000 products in our materialistic world.
 
Wind turbines and solar panels ONLY generate electricity but CANNOT make any products or transportation fuels for planes, trucks, cars, or ships.

I do not like the term renewables for other reasons.

However, dictionary definitions use renewables when refueling (with physical fuel) is not required.

And the EXISTENCE of wind turbines and solar panels is 100% dependent on COAL, OIL AND GAS.

And since the “free wind and sunshine” is not consistently available, wind turbines and solar panels require 100% backup from USEFUL, 24/7 generation even just for electricity.

Another one of the stories not being told in the misledia is also from India: a “critical” shortage of LPG for cooking and heating. The ‘critical’ is not my emphasis, but it appears in almost all the reports about the impact on Indian lives, particularly the poor. Which are a major portion of the population. The ones who couldn’t afford electric appliances, or get access to the grid, even if they were available.

But let’s not lose the important focus on how India is or is not pursuing solar and wind…

It’s good to see India calling a spade a spade regarding energy policy and continuing to take steps that will benefit its economy and its population instead of falling into line with the unrealistic demands of the UN and environmental organizations. Backing away from hosting another wasteful, hypocritical and ineffectual COP conference should undoubtedly start driving a few much-needed nails into the coffin of of a scam that should have been laid to rest at least a decade ago.
