Claim: Trump Providing Free Military Support to Greenland will Alleviate Climate Concerns

Essay by Eric Worrall

Activists seem keen for the USA to go back to subsidising Europe’s defence budget.

Trump calls climate change a ‘con job’ but it could drive his bid to seize Greenland

January 13, 2026 — 5.00am
David Crowe
Europe correspondent

At a time when temperatures are soaring in Australia and bushfires are destroying homes and lives, the conditions in Greenland seem like the opposite extreme. The common factor, however, is the concern about the warming planet.

This is another worry for the people of Greenland when US President Donald Trump is making them nervous by talking about taking control of their territory.

One young woman in Nuuk screws up her face when asked about Trump. “He treats us as objects, not as human beings,” she says.

When the Americans worry about Russian and Chinese ships in these northern waters, the climate is part of their calculations. …

The US response, however, has been to leave its military operations in Greenland largely unchanged. …

One Nuuk local, Julia Pars, a business consultant, tells me some people say they can’t sleep at night because they think about the US invading their territory. Pars shares the concerns, but she separates the anxiety about Trump from the security pact with America.

This is not an unusual response when I speak to people in Nuuk, and it is also the view of the major political leaders here. They seem to believe in the US alliance, and the unity of Western democracies, more than the US president. I do not hear objections to hosting more US forces in Greenland.

Read more: https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/trump-calls-climate-change-a-con-job-but-it-could-drive-his-bid-to-seize-greenland-20260112-p5nt8v.html

Let’s see if I’ve got this right. Greenlanders are terrified of climate change and the USA “taking over”, and presumably taking a slice of Greenland’s mineral wealth – but the USA sending lots of soldiers to Greenland for nothing in return would help alleviate their concerns?

I don’t blame the Europeans for trying. The Biden administration was wide open to European leaders mooching billions of US taxpayer dollars for Ukraine and any cause with the word “climate” in its name. Shaking the Russia rattle or the climate rattle has consistently worked on many previous US administrations.

Perhaps European influencers and leaders think if they shake the climate rattle and the Russia rattle at the same time, the Trump administration will cave and give them lots of free stuff.

Why would Climate Activists want the USA to subsidise Europe’s defence budget?

I don’t know David Crowe’s personal motivation, but back in 2023 George Soros complained the tension with Russia is distracting Europe from its climate crusade.

Europe’s climate crusade appears to include a substantial effort to interfere with US domestic politics.

If President Trump was to do what reporter David Crowe wants, and subsidise Europe’s defence of Greenland without any quid pro quo, US taxpayers would likely be indirectly funding Europe’s efforts to manipulate the United States into embracing radical left wing policy priorities, including renewable energy.

Meanwhile Europeans would leverage free US military support to exploit Greenland’s mineral rights, and keep all the profits, or at least keep a large slice for themselves as mineral royalties, if US mining companies did all the hard work. The Europeans would grow rich, and the USA would pay the bills.

Obviously it is up to the American people how US tax dollars are spent, but I can think of better uses for those US tax dollars than providing free military support to help Europeans get rich off Greenland’s mineral wealth.

As for Greenland, I find it fascinating that despite a public rejection of President Trump’s proposal, Greenlanders seem keen on a large US military presence, even if they feel there are unresolved concerns about climate change. This is like a girl you fancy saying “I don’t want you to be my boyfriend but I want you to move into my house to help me feel safe“. Perhaps there is scope for further negotiations about Greenland’s future.

This is another example of the left’s agenda being driven more by selective outrage than any benefit for people.

One would think the Global Left would be out in the streets demonstrating in favor of Freedom for the Iranian people, but they are nowhere to be found.

There are a lot of young people in Iran and I think they are tired of being oppressed by religious fanatics. But they are not getting any support from the Global Left at all.

What does the Global Left support?

The left supports nothing but opposes everything. They do not build, they destroy. When it appears that they are in support of something, look a little deeper and you will see it is just a convenience to channel their opposition to something else.

The Danish opposition to Trump seems to be preservationist Greens, who oppose any development not in a Communist country, and Eurotrash opposition to the US in general, again because the US is unlikely to

Radical feminist MIT professor fights a righteous battle against reality Babbling Beaver

Abstract
One of the common themes in feminist research over the past decade has been the claim that reason is “gendered”: more specifically, that reason is “male” or “masculine.” Although feminists have differed in their interpretations of this claim and the grounds they offer for it, the general conclusion has been that feminist theory should steer clear of investments in reason and rationality, at least as traditionally conceived. For example, we should avoid an epistemology that privileges reason or the standpoint of reason; we should avoid theories of the self that take rationality to be a defining trait; and we should avoid endorsing moral and political ideals that glorify reason and the reasonable “person”On Being Objective and Being Objectified (MIT)

The American Revolution upset the Old World apple carts of royalty, religion, and aristocracy, and the Americans have never been forgiven for the upset. In the preamble to the US constitution, there is a phrase: “…due ordain…”. In Old World Europe no royal could rule unless being ordained by the Church. The American government was granted their authority to rule by the people and not the Church.

Well, ordained by white men of wealth- mostly because they wanted to rule, instead of being second class compared to British royalty- George Washington’s main problem was that the British refused to grant him a military title within the British military, instead seeing him as just a militiaman. Of course many colonial leaders had high ideals but many were more into it for their personal gain. But I’ll agree that saying the government is ordained by the people is a huge advance allowing for further reform to make it real, or close to being real.

The U.S. almost went authoritarian with Obama and Biden and their traitorous use of the power of the federal government to attack their political opponents.

If the Democrats had managed to win the last election, the United States would be well on the way to being a Democrat Dictatorship, where the Democrats control the voting and always win, like Putin or Maduro.

The voting in the last election managed to get Trump back in office, so we have a reprieve of a few years, but don’t think the Democrats have given up their goal of taking over the United States. Yes, that’s what I said. That is their ultimate goal. They want it all for themselves and like-minded fellow travelers and the Right will not be tolerated.

The Democrat Insurrection is starting in Minnesota, in their continuing efforts to take over the government. Trump may have to invoke the Insurrection Act before it’s all over.

Reply to  Tom Abbott

Actually Maduro LOST the voting.. but like any leftist, ignored the election result and used brute force to maintain it.

Just like Democrats have over the last year or so.

Here’s part of the Insurrection Act, in case anyone is curious:

§252. Use of militia and armed forces to enforce Federal authority
Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any State, and use such of the armed forces, as he considers necessary to enforce those laws or to suppress the rebellion.

end

Is that what the Democrats want? I think they do. Then they could claim Trump is a Tyrant and a Dictator. Of course, some of them might be doing so from a jail cell.

Yes, that’s right Minnesota politicians, the laws apply to you, too. Break the law and go to jail.

Regarding warming of the Arctic. Does anybody recall history, as I was taught history in grade school, https://www.britannica.com/place/Northwest-Passage-trade-route that from about 400 years ago, when the technology of sailing vessels was wooden ships powered by wind and they were sailing through the North West Passage up until it froze and then the Panama canal was built.

I think you need to reevaluate your education. Or at least read your link: However, the Northwest Passage was not finally conquered by sea until 1905, when the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen successfully navigated the treacherous middle section of the passage and emerged in the Beaufort Sea. Amundsen and his crew had set sail in 1903 in the converted 47-ton herring boat Gjøa. They completed the arduous three-year voyage in 1906, when they arrived in Nome, Alaska, after having wintered on the Yukon coast. The first single-season transit was achieved in 1944, when Sgt. Henry A. Larsen, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, made it through on a schooner.

I’d say “wikipedia to check your NW Passage history” but I also remember a lot of things from early education that are no longer “true”. An important idea to remember is that the teachers were people too, and it seems almost as likely that they were saying unresearched stupid —- that I remember as that I’ve said unresearched stupid —- because I mis-remember them from 30 yeas later.

Any news associated with Australia that we get has to be treated with a huge pinch of salt.
By way of example, Australia has a full on prohibition war going on with vapes and cigarettes. Shops and premises are firebombed and people are shot in gang wars…

Firebombs no deterrent as Perth tobacco shops keep selling illicit cigarettes
https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/firebombings-no-deterrent-as-perth-tobacco-shops-keep-selling-illicit-cigarettes-20260110-p5nt1n.html

The media here omits it – absolutely, completely. The UK wants the same policies here.  Ask an average UK citizen on it and they won’t have the foggiest idea what you are talking about. At the same time Australia has the Southern hemispheric equivalent of empty suit Keir Starmer. So disinformation (and u-turns) will be pretty much de-rigeur.

The narrative seems to be “as the Arctic warms and melts away…” But it isn’t. The technologies have improved immensely making what was once considered impossible to exploit, into a profitable project.

The EU is a de facto fascist edifice. Ask Elon Musk and X…. And Nato is just as bad. Few know there is no means or mechanism for ejecting an errant member state from Nato. This is why Turkey could buy Russian missile systems and only be punished by exclusion from the F-35 programme. And in Ukraine, Turkey plays both sides just as it always has done.

Greenlanders aren’t fans of the Danes and left the European Economic Community (now EU) in the 1980s. But geopolitics isn’t mindful of what people want.

Maybe one day someone might have the bright idea of asking Greelanders what they want. But I’m not holding my breath.

When a person puts their fist or open over their heart before raising the arm in a salute, that person is not making a Nazi or Fascist salute any more than a student in class raising their hand to ask or answer a question.

The origins of the salute in question comes from Mussolini (fascism) and even earlier from the French revolution.

Prior to Mussolini, at the end of WWI, it was the D’Annunzio salute used by nationalist involved in the occupation of Flume (modern day Croatia).

In the late 19th century, it was called the Bellamy salute (1892) and children used that salute when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Currently Russia is taking more casualties than the number of recruits. Short term is not a trend, but it is true.

Russia is recruiting from Africa, Middle East, and North Korea. If they were winning would they need that much augmented man power?

Given that performance Russian expected survival against the USA would be about a week so it’s lucky they have a nuclear deterrent. Although one does wonder given the state of the normal Russian army whether half those nuclear missile would even get out of the silo.

Ukraine has fought the Russians to a Standstill. Russia is now reduced to importing fighters from all over the world because they are running out of native Russians. And it’s not helping them a bit. Lots of foreign fighters’ mothers are now crying because of Putin’s insanity.

One insane man in the wrong position can inflict harm on millions of people. That’s what we have with Putin.

I do wish Trump would stop trying to humanize Putin. He’s not human, Donald.

My theory is that Trump doesn’t give a dam about Russia or Putin. He despises both. I think he is trying to back away from the battle to let the Europeans handle it- and they can if they have the guts to do so. I think Trump believes if America convinces Russia it’s active in the war, it’ll stiffen their spines to keep the war going even longer because they’re always paranoid and having America as a direct enemy is good reason to be very paranoid.

Not many from Moscow or St. Parkersburg have been in the fight. Russia did lose many of its elite soldiers so far but those were the “professionals”- not the ordinary middle class and wealthy from those cities. It’s mostly the criminals and desperately poor from the rural regions and now Africans, Indians, Cubans, etc. So, Putler is afraid of a general mobilization which would stir up the population as we’re now seeing in Iran.

They want to be independent, like most countries. They have independence from Denmark but not what security issues are concerned. The US, as always does not care what any country wants. It only cares about itself. Ask any country that tried to be independent and neutral from the US. Had to be destroyed. Millions of lives lost.
So, to me the irony of people here claiming to care what greenlanders want is like a sick joke. Like Trump saying he cares about people dying in Ukraine. Liar..

‘Oligarchy’ — a small group, historically ‘The Thirty Tyrants’, usurpers of the Athenian Republic:

For too long, a small group … has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people. Replace the word “get” with “produce”. Any true oligarchy doesn’t have to worry about losing their wealth and status. In America, many wealthy do lose their wealth and status. America’s class system is a far cry from the caste system of India or the old landed wealth of Europe- or the class systems in current authoritarian regimes like China and many others.

He pointed out that they present “The Rich” as a nameless, faceless group of people who have succeeded. What they never never mention is that the names and faces of “The Rich” constantly changes. Some enter that category and others drop out.
He also brought up the fact that many of the new names and faces are those who have worked and saved/invested all their lives and have accumulated enough to now be called “Rich”.
(Many retired people might be surprised to learn that those out to tax “The Rich” consider them to now be “Rich”!”)

With 56K population spread over the whole island Greenland isn’t even a large city. I think the populace could care less about AGW and may even welcome it were it true. Even with NATO (without US involvement) Denmark couldn’t protect it, they don’t have the money to take advantage of their natural resources and Denmark doesn’t either … or don’t want to spend it …, and they’ve already surrendered their sovereignty to the EU. What’s the problem for Greenland?

Get a grip….both Canada and Greenland let US overfly their territory at will…put up whatever radar stations they want….all just to humor US military hawks and avoid the very “annexation” that DJT is now pushing. Face it, for US it’s relatively zero cost to takeover 56,000 pop. of fishing villages…but the amount of tax dollars that can be scammed and spent in the “military-industrial complex” for a military build-up to supposedly “defend” it is immense.
That’s the goal….sell military might to both US tax payers and foreign powers. On the march to Trump history book greatness….sad really, the possibility of your children or grandchildren meeting their end in an anti-drone bunker has increased.

Historically factual.

When Alaska was purchased in 1867, there was serious discussions about acquiring Greenland to effect a balance as it were.

(1867) Secretary of State William H. Seward saw strategic value in the island, though no formal offer was made then; the first concrete U.S. attempt was President Truman’s $100 million offer in gold in 1946.

An avalanche of jackass nonsense!

He stole the oil!

So much for NO Kings! Holy moly, he had you all weeping for a bloodthirsty drug dealing jackal, a communist strongman with zero legitimacy!

We pissed off Iran!
When he got rid of the worst terror mastermind of our lifetime, the retaliation was gonna be godawful!
They laughed in his face when he warned them ten years ago to be careful of depending on Russian gas.
Biden said if Putrin just invades a little, it would be understandable, Putin asked for a single promise, no NATO for Ukraine, Biden refused to promise it, he practically invited then begged Putin to invade, but what? Any pushback?
No one on the left said squat, not when Biden left an intact base and $85 billion in top shelf hardware, and led to the worst optics since Saigon!
No one on the left said Jack shit!

Women across the US are laying down in the road when ICE tries to arrest pedophiles, murderers and rapists!

The left cheered like it was the superbowl when patriotic Americans were locked up without charges for months on end, and sent to prison for long sentences for just about nothing, including some people who were not even there.
But simply will not tolerate deporting illegal alien criminals!

I can’t blame the people of Greenland for negativity toward Trump and the US even if they appreciate our defense. Trump is easy to question even dislike. Trump has done more good for the US than any leader since Reagan. He is a hard person to defend primarily because of his in your face New York behavior. One of my best friends is from New York, he is a true friend, he is really smart, he has taught me a lot about Jews, he has helped me understand a lot of things and I really like him but not many of my other friends like being around him. He is pretty much non political but very liberal. I see a lot of similarities between him and Trump. They hate us, and NATO does not protect us, it protects THEM!
Do you want to go to war for them?
Why should we have this gigantic obligation, and they have no forces worth a shit to carry their end of the log if there is a conflict.

NATO was a counterweight to the Warsaw Pact.
NATO should have dissolved when the USSR dissolved.

We will always do what we think is best on a case by case basis, not a one-sided pact that costs us a fortune, does nothing for us, and commits us to prote4cting them.
They are all gonna be living under Sharia pretty soon anyway.
It is already too late.

Pulling out may be the only way to make them see what danger they have put themselves in.

And we do not have bases because of NATO, those bases are ours. Let them try to kick us out or “take them back”.

In over 2000 years of nearly continuous war, no country in Europe EVER gave back an inch of land acquired after a war was won. EVER.
Look it up and watch of video of the changes in borders in Europe over the centuries.

Screw them. NATO is nothing we need.
The only questions relate to how it ends, not if.
And good riddance.
We should kick the UN out next.

We can kick them out, but they cannot kick us out.

They are about to give unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, answerable to no one and undislodgable, an ARMY!

Greenland is not part of Europe.
The will not and cannot defend it.
And it is on our Hemisphere, on our Continent.
Our frickin tectonic plate!

Besides, every ballistic missile aimed at us from Russia, passes over Greenland, and Greenland is directly below the apogee, the only logical and even possible place to shoot them down.

Submarines are ships, although often referred to as “boats.”

We do not get classified military briefings, so it is rather difficult to say what is actually happening.

China is a much greater threat, seaborn, than Russia, but Russia has warships.

“I can’t blame the people of Greenland for negativity toward Trump and the US even if they appreciate our defense. Trump is easy to question even dislike.”

That happens because the Leftwing Media lies constantly about Trump and anything he is doing.

Unfortunately, a lot of people in the United States and around the world are easily misled by the Leftwing propaganda and as a result, are divorced from reality.

Why do we still have NATO?
We sure do not need it, they do!
I am now in the Adios Muchachos camp re NATO!
