UN Urges Western Nations to phase Out Fossil Fuel

Essay by Eric Worrall

UN Secretary General António Gutteres is doubling down on his shrill climate demands, as he approaches the final stretch of his zero achievement term of office.

Pacific in peril: UN urges Australia to block new coal and gas projects

By Bianca Hall
August 27, 2024 — 11.25am

Wealthy countries like Australia must immediately phase out fossil fuels and block new coal projects and oil and gas expansion to drastically reduce greenhouse emissions, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in Tonga on Tuesday.

The UN issued a global SOS – what Guterres described as a “save our seas”, releasing new data from NASA and the World Meteorological Organisation that showed sea-level rises had doubled since the 1990s.

“Without drastic cuts to emissions, the Pacific islands can expect at least 15 centimetres of additional sea-level rise by mid-century, and more than 30 days per year of coastal flooding in some places,” Guterres told reporters at the forum.

The demand is especially funny because fossil fuel is a key component of solar and wind power. Coal is an essential ingredient of solar panels, while oil and gas are essential components of the epoxy or polyester plastic used to form wind turbine blades. An end to coal, oil and gas projects, especially metallurgical coal, would also spell the end of the renewable revolution.

Solar Panel Production

But I guess you’d need to know something about science and engineering to understand the relationship between fossil fuel and “green” energy.

As the forgettable Gutteres approaches his final stretch, an interesting question is who will replace him.

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who is currently a player in the global censorship push, is a long shot possibility. She seems a very random kind of person, she made a speech in 2023 equating climate skepticism with gun violence. If she serves the UN as well as she served the people of New Zealand, with any luck the United Nations would suffer total dissolution by the end of a Jacinda term as UN Secretary General.

Not 0 achievement. Much less than zero achievement. Two wars, Russia Ukraine and Israel Hamas. Two ‘insurrections’, Haiti and Sudan. China taking chair of UN human rights commission. All real, unlike failure to stop boiling oceans and overflowing Pacific.

He’s going to reduce sea level rise, and his plan is to reduce atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide to do so. Is the guy a bit retarded?

I wanna see his Gantt Chart.

A simple way to fix sea level rise would be to put the tide gauge on a boat.

Someone should tell Antonio to go to the beach at high tide and make the sit down gesture with his hands. I am sure the sea will recede on his command. Crisis solved.

Well, maybe the Korean War?
Oh, wait. That never officially ended.
But it did send in troops from the US and other Western nations (Is Australia considered a “Western Nation”?) into the fight against … Chinese troops? (Here I thought China was part of the UN?)
Israel had lots of UN Peace Keepers running around.
That turned out well.

Apparently they don’t know the difference between centimetres and millimetres.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, “Apia, in Samoa, had recorded a 31-centimetre sea-level rise since 1990,” That would be 9 mm per year.

They also said,
“Average global sea-level rises have more than doubled over the past 30 years, from 0.21 centimetres a year between 1993 and 2002, to 0.48 centimetres a year between 2014 and 2023.” https://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/pacific-in-peril-un-urges-australia-to-block-new-coal-and-gas-projects-20240823-p5k4ue.html

My apologies. I was wrong I just looked at the tide gauge data for Apia-B in Samoa.

Tide data is at https://psmsl.org/data/obtaining/stations/1840.php

It shows a trend of 10mm/year rise since March 1993. My guess is the tide gauge is moving vertically down.

What dictator doesn’t want power over other people and their lives, especially a “free” people. He is a tyrant that dreams sovereign inroads into the USA – a slippery slide into tyranny. The USA is a Constitutional Republic, what’s left of it. As US citizens, we are guaranteed protection against foreign attack. Democrats want to change that.

You are 180º out in your understanding of the UN.

It is owned and operated by select western nations including the US/UK and France (amongst a few others). It’s HQ is even in New York were confirmation needed.

Like every other Secretary General of the UN, Gutteres is a puppet of the west. Globalism is a western obsession and it’s been exploiting the UN and NATO to achieve it’s objective of imposing ‘democracy’ and western hegemony on nations that don’t want it since WW2.

Did Afghanistan gleefully adopt democracy when Biden abandoned the place after 20 years? Nope, it returned to its feudal, religious, political and legal system overnight.

What other nations are resisting this western tidal wave of unrestricted immigration sweeping across the US and Europe?

Russia and China of course. Whatever we might think of them they have been determined to protect their nationalism and borders. There’s no immigrants flooding across their borders.

Nor has either nation gone beyond bordering nations to protect their sovereignty. Georgia and Ukraine notable examples of where NATO was determined to establish a presence but were physically confronted, and repelled by Russia. The few instances of overseas Russian military activity is by invitation from legitimate governments, notably Assad in Syria (where the uninvited US maintain a number of illegal military bases supporting ISIS rebels) and Niger/Chad which have just kicked French colonisers out after hundreds of years of exploitation. There is little need to wonder why Niger and Chad din’t turn to America or the UK for protection against the French.

Then there’s Taiwan, an island that’s belonged to the Chinese since 1943 when it was handed over by the allies after the Chinese helped to kick the Japanese off it. Little more than a paddy field, the allies didn’t want the responsibility so it was included in the Potsdam agreement of 1945 when it was officially designated part of China. Suddenly, after 80 years of indifference the west declares it an independent state which must be protected from evil Chinese colonists. Of course the most advanced semiconductor industries in the world resident there have nothing to do with it…..

We are the problem in the world and the sooner we wake up to that the better.

While there are quite a few valid points made, and historically correct, there is one nit to pick.

The “Official” purpose of the UN was to prevent, not future wars, but future world wars.
Also, while the Western world was pushing globalism, so were Russian, and especially China.
While the West was funding the UN and pushing for global democracies and capitalist economies, there was a shift. Now the UN is pushing for the One World Order based on socialism with a complete transformation of global economies.

In short, the UN evolved (or , perhaps devolved depending on point of view).

Why America appointed itself as the “World’s Police Force” is beyond my ken.
Perhaps it initiated right after WWII when it was recognized that the US economy represented at least 50% of the world’s economy and the US military reach the point where it could go toe to toe with the combined forces of all the world and win.

Hubris is rampant everywhere.

15 centimetres of additional sea-level rise by mid-century,”

Which of course is total BS.

Even the exaggerated 3mm/year from satellite data manipulations would only give 7cm.

Reality will be much less.

How is it possible for one portion of an ocean to rise up faster than the rest?
in this time of global warming hype, have we lost the historical observation that water finds its own level.
if I am wrong, and if the UN has evidence for hills of raised ocean, we can ask how high these hills can grow. Is there a chance that the Maldives can get some hills that tourists can use for water skiing without a tow boat?
Over the many years I have researched these odd sea level claims, a small group of women academics from Australia, such as Lesley Hughes, has tasted publicity and IPCC fame and perhaps a better than average income. Some have penned strange, emotional essays about threats to future people from the sea as if people are helpless to resist like the Dutch have.
This is not science. It is a mix of advertising and fiction to frighten people while making an extra quid on the side. Please allow me to apologise for Australia for this disgusting effort.

Due to the isthmus of Panama, the Pacific is a bit higher surface level than the Atlantic.
So yes, water tends to reach an equilibrium level, but the land masses make it much more interesting as does the rotation of the planet, solar and lunar tidal effects, etc.

Rud Istvan
August 28, 2024 3:32 pm

Thought I would make a further UN comment, less Guterres specific. UN has accomplished exactly zero of its wishful thinking goals.

  1. Hasn’t prevented even small regional conflicts (Dafur in Sudan).
  2. Hasn’t prevented even small regional famine (Dafur, Somalia).
  3. Hasn’t prevented even small regional refugee exodus (Haiti, Venezuela).
  4. UNFCCC hasn’t prevented ‘global warming’.
  5. UNESCO hasn’t prevented Taliban destroying Buddhas in Afghanistan, or ISIS destroying Roman world heritage cultural sites in Iraq.
  6. UN WHO hasn’t prevented spread of even small regional diseases ( African mpox the most recent example).

UN has, since its founding, proven itself useless. It survives mainly on US funding. I hope Trump47 will defund it as a small but symbolically important deficit reduction action.

I wish I could add more than only one “+”.
The League of Nations was the UN’s predecessor. Even though it was Wilson’s brainchild, the US Senate said NO! The US (and it’s money) never joined and it failed. It no longer exist.
Without US money the UN would follow the same route. (They’ve already got the “failure” part right.)
(I’ve often wondered if putting the UN HQ in the US was to make it harder for the US to quit.)

— But, curiously, there is a nation that is emitting more than one third of all global emissions, three times the next biggest emitter, which is mining and burning more coal than the rest of the world put together. Its curious that you did not include them in your remarks. I wonder, Secretary, do they have to ‘immediately phase out fossil fuels’?
