‘The stakes could not be higher’: world is on edge of climate abyss, UN warns

Damian Carrington Environment editorFri 10 May 2024 00.00 AEST

The world is on the verge of a climate abyss, the UN has warned, in response to a Guardian survey that found that hundreds of the world’s foremost climate experts expect global heating to soar past the international target of 1.5C.

A series of leading climate figures have reacted to the findings, saying the deep despair voiced by the scientists must be a renewed wake-up call for urgent and radical action to stop burning fossil fuels and save millions of lives and livelihoods. Some said the 1.5C target was hanging by a thread, but it was not yet inevitable that it would be passed, if an extraordinary change in the pace of climate action could be achieved.

The Guardian got the views of almost 400 senior authors of reports by the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Almost 80% expected a rise of at least 2.5C above preindustrial levels, a catastrophic level of heating, while only 6% thought it would stay within the 1.5C limit. Many expressed their personal anguish at the lack of climate action.

“The goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C is hanging by a thread,” said the official spokesperson for António Guterres, the UN secretary general. “The battle to keep 1.5C alive will be won or lost in the 2020s – under the watch of political and industry leaders today. They need to realise we are on the verge of the abyss. The science is clear and so are the world’s scientists: the stakes for all humanity could not be higher.”

I clicked the link to the personal reactions link, see if there was anything interesting. I didn’t bother reading all of it, because most of it seemed to be the usual rehashed tedium. They’re all sad and depressed because we are not doing what the scientists tell us to do. Not one word about nuclear energy, the zero carbon energy source which actually works. From what the Guardian wrote they want us to embrace climate communism (restricted choices, social change) and renewables.

I tried finding the UN source of the climate abyss comment, but all I saw were previous UN “climate abyss” warnings. Or maybe it’s the same warning, but the abyss is still really close but at the same time many years away.

World on the verge of climate ‘abyss’, as temperature rise continues: UN chief

19 April 2021 Climate and Environment

The Earth’s temperature continues to rise unabated, with 2020 being one of the three warmest years on record, as extreme weather events combine with the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting millions.

According to the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) flagship State of the Global Climate report, the global average temperature in 2020 was about 1.2-degree Celsius above pre-industrial level.

That figure is “dangerously close” to the 1.5-degree Celsius limit advocated by scientists to stave off the worst impacts of climate change.

The six years since 2015, have been the warmest on record, and the decade beginning up to this year, was the warmest ever.

“We are on the verge of the abyss”, Secretary-General António Guterres said at a press conference announcing the findings.

Of course, as always, there is still time to avert the climate abyss – providing we embrace climate communism and renewables.

Lest we forget, this entire tedious, repetitive clown show is being funded by your tax dollars.

Next time you come up short trying to pay inflated green energy bills, take a moment to write to your congress critter and see where they stand on this nonsense. If your representative doesn’t promptly point out a long track record of trying to pull the plug on climate funding, primary them and find someone who will. Because as long as politicians don’t make ending all this a priority, the climate clown show will continue, and your tax dollars will continue to inflate your energy bills, enrich left wing donors, and pay for the tearful public performances of the crying climate scientist industry.

In 1989, a senior U.N. environmental official said, “Entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.”

So, old projections of the distant future hold up well with new projections of the distant future. No mention of the actual rates of sea level rise.

We are not in a climate crisis, CO2 is not the control knob for our climate and we are not going to reach a tipping point and suffer irreversible global warming. Fire up all fossil fuel and nuclear generators, build new fossil fuel and nuclear generators and remove all wind and solar from the grid.

May 11, 2024 11:24 pm

Not one word about nuclear energy, the zero carbon energy source which actually works.

And died in the seventies, despite massive government support.

Waste and cost among drawbacks, as researchers say renewables could power UK entirely

Your Guardian link is a summary of a summary and gives no numbers. The summary it links to (which does give a few numbers) is here:

https://www.current-news.co.uk/oxford-britain-could-be-solely-powered-by-wind-and-solar/

but it contains no link to the brief itself. If you can post a link to the actual brief that would be useful. It seems to have been published six months ago and sunk without trace.

Here are some of the claims in the summary.

Published last week (26 September) the brief anticipated that offshore wind alone could produce 2,121 TWh/year against the highest energy demand forecast for Britain in 2050 of 1,500 TWh/year.

Combined with solar, the brief claimed that the two technologies could produce nearly ten times the current electricity demand of 299 TWh/year.

“This is a question of ambition rather than technical feasibility,” said lead author Dr Brian O’Callaghan.

“The UK is already lagging in the global green race. Instead of hitting reverse, we should be turbocharging on renewables with US-style incentives and gearing up our grid for the surge that is already underway.”

According to the analysis, offshore wind would produce the bulk of the energy (73%) at 2,121 TWh/year whilst onshore wind would contribute around 7% (206 TWh/year)…..

….In turn, utility-scale solar would contribute around 19% (544 TWh/year), with the remaining power (25 TWh/year) by rooftop solar, covering 8% of Britain’s roof area….

….The brief’s authors noted that significant grid upgrades, as well as the scaling of battery storage will be required to achieved these results. However, this can be achieved with the right policy and support.

It seems that they think all you do is install a lot of off-shore wind and solar, and add batteries. How much battery? How much wind? Who knows. But if they are proposing to provide 20% of demand from solar, its going to be an awful lot of batteries. Solar just about vanishes from November through February. Dead calms due to blocking highs occur most winters and last for a week or more. ? We have just had one this spring lasting for a couple of weeks. You can see this for yourself on http://www.gridwatch.co.uk/wind.

All this is coming from batteries? They are going to output 40GW+ for several hours for days at a time, and lesser amounts for weeks? And where is the power coming from to recharge them when the wind finally picks up?

There are a couple of obvious problems with this, as summarized. One is scale. Two is cost. Three is batteries.

The Royal Society addressed the storage problem, and their report is quite devastating about using batteries to deal with intermittency. It cannot be done. They also looked at weather patterns going back decades and observed that there are whole seasons of calm with low wind output. They accordingly advocated the mad idea that Britain should dig out 900 caverns, seal them, and then store hydrogen in them for decades, to burn during seasonal or decadal calms. The mount of stored generation capacity required is huge. And getting that amount of hydrogen is pure fantasy.

https://royalsociety.org/news-resources/projects/low-carbon-energy-programme/large-scale-electricity-storage/

The bottom line

Using the UK as a test case, the historical output from the existing wind parc shows that you have to expect several week long periods of less than 10% of faceplate a year. This implies that with very large amounts of battery backup, maybe you could get by with 10 times the amount of faceplate that you have peak demand.

This would mean, for the UK, around 500GW of wind, up from the present total of 29GW. If demand is doubled by the move to EVs and heat pumps, you would need 1TW.

This is an engineering and public works impossibility, and its also a financial impossibility. And it would also be useless, even could it be done it would not affect the global climate one iota.

Show this is wrong. Just put up an estimate, based on actual performance of the actual UK wind parc, how much wind and how much battery storage would be needed to get through the calms and the peak demand we have records of. And state, while you are at it, how much effect UK Net Zero in power generation will have on the global climate.

Answer in degrees C please.

We’ve been buying large amounts from Europe. Mainly French nuclear and hydro, Scandinavian hydro (they’ve not had much wind either), I’m not sure where the Dutch and Belgians are getting their spare from but it won’t have been wind as Germany has had the same May wind drought as the UK.

As you say Michel the Royal Society storage report dismissed battery storage on the basis that

“the TWhs needed are 1000 times more than is currently provided by pumped hydro, and far more than can be provided cost effectively by batteries”

Their proposed 900 hydrogen caverns is a fantasy (one would like to think they came up with it to further demonstrate the impossibility of net zero).

However there was another flaw in their reasoning which was not immediately apparent and only came to light later.

That flaw was they used the electricity demand of 2018 and repeated this 37 times in the study not allowing for the fact that having everything switch to electricity would require far more electricity production than was the case in 2018.

Secondly, as usual everything you believe is the opposite of the truth.
Nuclear energy hasn’t died, you environmental alarmist managed to damage it, but nuclear power is alive and well in most of the world.
The level of government support was tiny, just a few percent of what renewables get every year. Despite all the support, renewables still don’t work, and still don’t show any signs that they ever will.

Recently I began watching an old series Mystery Science Theater 3000 which does spoofs of old science fiction movies that had anywhere from questionable science to outright ridiculous (non)science. Two consistent themes throughout these absolutely ridiculous movies is that while these (usually) monsters are wreaking havoc on earth, we should turn to the scientists or children to help us solve this dilemma. I laugh at them, and notice a consistency with these global warmunists – I also laugh at them and their hysteria. I also notice that their hysteria has been going on almost for as long as some of these movies had been produced – definitely since the global cooling hysteria of the 60’s.

I just wish I could change the channel with them as easily as I do with MST3k when I’m done.

As Anthony and others have said: at least some big players are retreating from green policies or at least spend less money on it. The panic of the greens is clearly seen. That is why they want to rush legislation as to make it binding before the headwind gets too strong. But, on the positive side: a law is only as strong as the willingness to implement it and to punish. As we have seen in the past, when the big players get into trouble they bend the rules or ignore it. It seems to me that economic downturn is the key driving factor.

In terms of energy: the tech companies and the state need reliable, clean and cheap energy to run data centres and control the masses ie not unreliable sources like wind and solar. They are preserved for the masses as long as they dont put too much energy back to the grid to break it. For that the state needs to control in- and outputs. Digital control mechanisms are needed, digital ID, CBDCs. A bizarre and dystopian panopticum.

— an “impact”
— a “danger”
— a “threat”
— an “emergency”
— a “catastrophe”
— the “greatest threat to humans”
— the “greatest threat to the world”
— an “existential threat to humanity”
— a transition to “boiling oceans”

So, now we have it as “an abyss” . . . sure, why not?
