Rich nation consumers who have been deceived by clever marketing into demanding material wealth and modern conveniences are stopping greens from saving the planet.
Human ‘behavioural crisis’ at root of climate breakdown, say scientists
New paper claims unless demand for resources is reduced, many other innovations are just a sticking plaster

“We’ve socially engineered ourselves the way we geoengineered the planet,” says Joseph Merz, lead author of a new paper which proposes that climate breakdown is a symptom of ecological overshoot, which in turn is caused by the deliberate exploitation of human behaviour.
“We need to become mindful of the way we’re being manipulated,” says Merz, who is co-founder of the Merz Institute, an organisation that researches the systemic causes of the climate crisis and how to tackle them.
…
They claim that unless demand for resources is reduced, many other innovations are just a sticking plaster. “We can deal with climate change and worsen overshoot,” says Merz. “The material footprint of renewable energy is dangerously underdiscussed. These energy farms have to be rebuilt every few decades – they’re not going to solve the bigger problem unless we tackle demand.”
…
“We’re talking about replacing what people are trying to signal, what they’re trying to say about themselves. Right now, our signals have a really high material footprint –our clothes are linked to status and wealth, their materials sourced from all over the world, shipped to south-east Asia most often and then shipped here, only to be replaced by next season’s trends. The things that humans can attach status to are so fluid, we could be replacing all of it with things that essentially have no material footprint – or even better, have an ecologically positive one.”

Abstract
Previously, anthropogenic ecological overshoot has been identified as a fundamental cause of the myriad symptoms we see around the globe today from biodiversity loss and ocean acidification to the disturbing rise in novel entities and climate change. In the present paper, we have examined this more deeply, and explore the behavioural drivers of overshoot, providing evidence that overshoot is itself a symptom of a deeper, more subversive modern crisis of human behaviour. We work to name and frame this crisis as ‘the Human Behavioural Crisis’ and propose the crisis be recognised globally as a critical intervention point for tackling ecological overshoot. We demonstrate how current interventions are largely physical, resource intensive, slow-moving and focused on addressing the symptoms of ecological overshoot (such as climate change) rather than the distal cause (maladaptive behaviours). We argue that even in the best-case scenarios, symptom-level interventions are unlikely to avoid catastrophe or achieve more than ephemeral progress. We explore three drivers of the behavioural crisis in depth: economic growth; marketing; and pronatalism. These three drivers directly impact the three ‘levers’ of overshoot: consumption, waste and population. We demonstrate how the maladaptive behaviours of overshoot stemming from these three drivers have been catalysed and perpetuated by the intentional exploitation of previously adaptive human impulses. In the final sections of this paper, we propose an interdisciplinary emergency response to the behavioural crisis by, amongst other things, the shifting of social norms relating to reproduction, consumption and waste. We seek to highlight a critical disconnect that is an ongoing societal gulf in communication between those that know such as scientists working within limits to growth, and those members of the citizenry, largely influenced by social scientists and industry, that must act.

What a hideously misanthropic vision of the future. Why should we give up one iota of all the consumerist toys we have created? Why should we give up having however many children we want, when there is plenty for all?
At least the study authors are honest about the immense material footprint of renewable energy.
Nuclear power is not subject to these kinds of green limitations. France runs a modern, consumerist economy which derives just under 70% of its electricity from zero carbon nuclear. Even if reducing CO2 emissions turns out to be necessary, by embracing nuclear we could create a zero carbon economy which doesn’t involve people learning to love wearing rags.
Even better, nuclear energy will eventually open the way to retrieving an effectively endless supply of resources from non-terrestrial sources, when we finally exhaust Earth’s resources. Space drives of immense power such as Nuclear Thermal Propulsion and Project Orion (enough power for a manned starship, let alone an interplanetary transport) could make science fiction levels of non-terrestrial extractive industries economically viable – an option for resource acquisition and exploitation this sad green vision of the future will never deliver.
There are no limits to growth, other than those we choose to impose on ourselves.

Eric, your remedies don’t exist yet.
Neither does viable green energy.
Actually not quite true – Russians have been experimenting with nuclear thermal for the last decade. Nuclear thermal works, though the best design to date I’ve heard of still spits out a lot of radiation. Sadly in recent times Putin seems to have opted to focus on a nuclear powered cruise missile rather than a civilian nuclear powered space launcher.

Fifty years ago hand-held super computers and wrist wrapped telephones only existed in comic strips and pulp science fiction novels; now anyone can have them for a week or two of pay!
If the last few years have shown us anything, it it that Western scientific inquiry has strayed far from it’s metier, and is now awash with polluted waters that threaten to drown further human advancement! It is far better aspire to new, untested technologies; than to insist on ideologically espoused ones that MUST be accepted despite the cost and failure rate!
Curious George wrote, “Eric, your remedies don’t exist yet.”
Looking back on the world’s history there have been many things that didn’t exist yet —

Sorry….I got to “the guardian” and “climate breakdown” in the same line and just couldn’t read any further.
Non functioning BIG GREEN solutions to non problems is what’s really holding back Green Energy Proliferation…thankfully!
Intelligent People just can’t support that which does nothing
We knew that Teslas could double as crematoriums, now we know they can double as morgues too.
It’s OK, it is NOT the fault of the weather or the climate (buying the Tesla **fixed** the climate, remember?) or the car itself.
Or even the charging station
It seems that dumb stupid owners/drivers didn’t hie (sic)- but he did say “hit”) the “Battery Precondidtion Button” before attempting to charge their car when its cold.
It’s not clear how not doing that drained the car or caused the chargers to not work but such is the ever-giving-gift of climate change.
Why didn’t the hideous crates ‘precondition’ their own batteries?
What happens, if there isn’t enough juice in the battery, to precondition it?
What’s this preconditioning all about?
Charging up a battery from cold, can damage it. Like, they have to warm up the batteries, before driving away.
Battery technology varies widely, .
Some if not all of the EV ones seem sensitive – don’t leave your Tossla in depleted state for two weeks.
Automotive lead-acid ones start vehicles in cold weather, though that may cause accelerated wearout – but the AGM/VRSLA design is very good in cold weather.
No, you have to “condition” (read: warm) the battery pack, THEN charge the battery pack, THEN you can drive away.
Guess you would have to “precondition” from the grid… oh.
Indeed it’s nonsense. It’s like an automated washing machine, but with buttons to fill it with water before washing cycle and drain after. Why?
Default mode quite obviously should actually start charging only if battery temperature is satisfactory, otherwise automatically perform warm-up routine until ready. Required energy is definitely available when plugged into grid. Checking thermometers constantly is a good idea anyway, as an early warning safety feature (in case the battery suddenly starts getting hotter than it should be).
Manual battery warm-up button is a good idea, but only to save time if and when the user must wait before sticking the plug in, i.e. either starts warm-up remotely, then approaches to unroll and plug the cable, or just sits in a queue for charging station.
Indicator of warm-up time estimate would be useful for this, too.
I stated a few weeks ago that no thinking adult would own an EV. The video proves that statement correct. Why would any adult expose themselves to the high costs and dangers involved in owning a BEV. Even greater dangers in freezing climate.
Snow is not something from the past. Arctic Blasts do not come close to what the snow will be like in 200 years from now when it no longer melts from year-to-year in a lot more area of the NH than now.
Southern Hemisphere is just past peak warming but there is still a big block of ice on Antarctica. The peak sunlight has only just started its shift northward. If the UN think oceans are boiling now, what will they think when 50% of the ocean surface gets to the 30C. limit in September. 2023 is just of glimpse of the globe’s futrure. Much more ocean surface at 30C limit in September and new snow records for 9,000 years.
I can’t think of a time I wanted to be poor.
You is manipulated so you will be severely communicated to by scientists working within limitations to growth and be happy.
I hope so.
Those same ‘scientists’ that use fossil fuels, wear clothes derived from fossil fuels and use devices manufactured from and by fossil fuels? Are those the ones you mean?
We know the atmospheric Maxwell Demons are only enraged when the peasants use planes (or cows fart), but remain placid when sufficiently exalted crowd flies. Which is why #GreensGoByAir, etc.

Their accusations are their confessions.
“We need to become mindful of the way we’re being manipulated,”
I read that line and almost spit my drink on the computer screen lol.
We are mindful, that’s why we resist your diktats.
This is just a setup for the de industrialization and depopulation agenda espoused by the WEF and UN Agenda 2030.
Using W. E.’s criteria, on a 0 to 1 scale this paper is a 0.09.
Next.
You’re being generous…
That’s a multiplying factor. The worth product would be the W.E.C X CQ (content quality). In this case, I’d say this paper is in the noise floor.
I had to look up pronatalism”. Apparently it’s the sin of wanting to raise children.
I’m guilty. Three times.
The most extreme liberals seem intent on removing their genes from future generations, by choosing not to have kids for the sake of the planet. Sadly I doubt this will make any noticeable difference to human stupidity in my lifetime.
At least the worst of them might not propagate and so, the entire (bowel) movement is doomed to extinction
Provided we can remove their domineering control over school curricula
Certainly a slow version of Darwin Candidate.
But meantime poor people will die without affordable portable energy.
Academic hyperbabble
I remember a high school US history teacher who mixed 100 sentences from 30 students’ AP practice exam essays to show my class writing the same dreck using the same buzzwords with nauseous pretentious unoriginality.
You mean I should keep my 20 year old shirts for longer? But how will I catch up to fashion? Although my torn 18 year old jeans are now fashionable.
I hear you fashion brother. Sadly my wife performs an aggressive cull on my closet on a regular basis.
I wonder if the Pope wears holey underwear.
Maybe it’s wholly underwear.
Pope St. John Paul ii did – he hated any fuss over things like that so his housekeeper would purposely rip his ratty underwear and shirts so she could claim that they had to be thrown out.
Stoicism like Zen, is an ancient way of life that has many merits but Merz is not a green Gaia saint and is not going to convince anyone to reduce for the sake mysterious CO2 emissions and phantom global warming that never seems to come and actually looks like a good thing especially with February around the corner.
“You need to make drastic sacrifices to avoid your climate becoming like Bali’s!!!”
Hmm, is that guaranteed? Then I’m going to start heating my house with coal and finding the most inefficient car to drive and…. 😉
I heard that the Left is considering backing a Woman for Pope next time.
But the Church is having Nun of that.
I wonder if he bathes with Pope on a Rope???

Oh dear! My husband is made unfashionable by the patches I put on his jeans.
Solutions for non existent problems that someone else will have to partake in.
You mean NON-SOLUTIONS to imaginary problems. Their “solutions” wouldn’t do a thing about the imaginary “problems,” even if they were real.
um, green goons want to deprive poor people of a great aid to their life: affordable portable energy.
Their Marxist ideology teaches fixed-pie economics in the face of abundant evidence to the contrary. (Karl Marx sat in London living on his father’s money after escaping Germany .where he advocated violent revolution. Oblivious to what was around him in Britain, his mind seemed locked in Continental Europe which was behind Britain in advancing human life.)
Why do people fall for the con?
Hey – knock of the smearing against engineers.
We build and improve, green goons tear down.

Big green government hates the small voter and loves absolute power…
One only has to look at map of the earth to see how much land is a wilderness area: all of Canada. Russia; deserts. And there is also the oceans which most of the earth. New technology will allow us to use materials from these locations. We could also do a better job of recycling much of what is thrown away.
All the so-called wilderness on earth is in the purview of some human or group of them, except Antarctica. The places that are called wilderness are simply not as densely populated as Hong Kong or Mexico City. The people who do live in them consider them their property.
“The people that do live in them consider them their property.”
Land Holding Property rights are a tried and true method of governments having people called “landowners” take some individual rather than communal responsibility for otherwise nearly vacant territory, keep it from becoming a garbage dump or something that costs the gov’t a lot to clean up when the landowner dies, plus collect taxes off it or take a cut of any economic activity that occurs on that otherwise vacant territory. Having “landowners” confident that their property will not be seized or devalued by political whim is a cornerstone of any long duration modern society. Cultural items like religion or art don’t matter to a civilization nearly as much as property rights.
When Claus Schwab says “you will own nothing and be happy” he is leaving off the
“…because I plan on me and my friends owning everything instead of you” part…Unfortunately this means he has forgotten about the tried and true benefits to society of individual property rights.
a cornerstone of any long duration modern society.
We don’t know how long the duration of of “modern society” will be. The present society is still in its developing stages, which could take an unpleasant turn or even come to a complete end with short notice. Pre-literate communal tribal societies have operated successfully for millennia without the property rights regimen advocated by John Locke and his focus on labor value that permeates Anglo-Puritan thinking.
If you think pre-literate societies did not have property and property rights, you have never studied any pre-literate societies.
As it becomes economic to recycle stuff, it gets recycled. No need to get anyone else involved.
“Socially Engineered Greed Stops Renewables from Solving Climate Change”
No. We let you build $3 trillion worth and they don’t work! If the Germans can’t make them work, that’s good enough for me. It would have been nice though, if we had done a, say, $500 million pilot project to demonstrate what we know now (and should have known by inspection without much expenditure at all).
Why do these people cling so fervently to a failed silly idea. I guess it’s for the same reason they cling to a moldy failed ideology.
It is a religion. They want to replace Western Judeo Christian Civilization with something else. They can’t/won’t explain exactly how it will work, but they have miles and miles of academic books and publications that “prove” that it can be done. Just put them in charge and give them unlimited power – they will lead the way for the rest of us.
Sadly they can explain it. It is just that when people hear it explained properly they realize it is communism. The green aspect is simply the “fig leaf over the naughty bits” as Monty Python would say.
“Why do these people cling so fervently to a failed silly idea.”
It hasn’t “failed”….they just haven’t put enough money into it yet.
And if you are gov’t, the money isn’t wasted, just moved to contribute to economic growth of some other part of the economy.

“We need to become mindful of the way we’re …” (Rachel Donald).
I haven’t read Rachel’s article merely did a word count of “we”, “our” and derivatives coming up with a total of 30.
“Nosism, from Latin nos ‘we’, is the practice of using the pronoun we to refer to oneself when expressing a personal opinion” (Wiki).
It could be used as pluralis majestatis (royal we), editorial ‘we’, pluralis modestiae (‘we’ as used in mathematical and scientific papers) or as a patronising ‘we’ (kindergarten ‘we’).
I don’t think Rachel is royalty, I don’t think she is addressing her criticisms to fellow members of The Guardian staff, she certainly is not writing a scientific paper so I conclude that she regards Guardian readers as on the same intellectual level as kindergarten children.
Actually, that is very insightful – the greens do act like they are “more-ecologically righteous than thou” – but, being upper class twits, they don’t realize that their “solutions” cause more damage than the staus quo – in fact Merz actually criticizes the current green solutions but doesn’t realize the core beliefs he has are the root cause of the problem.
Which is more like the intellectual level that begets “belief” in the notion of “green energy.”
Merz is talking like a secular proponent of stoic or monastic asceticism – not going to work if secular doesn’t believe in an afterlife.
And he’s totally misguided – people aren’t socially engineered to want comforts – were born that way – and in fact you have to work hard to see and feel the benefit of a less cluttered Zen, stoic, or monastic lifestyle.
However, advertising does make some people silly in their purchases – however that just creates a cheap supply for those of us who don’t mind buying gently used cars, phones and clothing that the more wealthy got bored with. Having nice things is an incentive to study and work hard to prosper – the carot at the end of the stick to keep you going. Closet communists think they can just brainwash people with patriotic slogans and get them to work harder for nothing in return.
“They pretend to pay us, so we pretend to work”
““We need to become mindful of the way we’re being manipulated,” says Merz, who is co-founder of the Merz Institute, an organisation that researches the systemic causes of the climate crisis and how to tackle them.”
Merz is either one of the manipulators, or one of the manipulated. Either way he’s delusional.
These guys don’t have a clue what they are talking about. You can tell when they have to make up words or phrases to communicate the simplest things. They should all be fired, they should all lose there modern housing, they should have all modern clothing taken from them, they should have all modes of transportation taken from them, they should have no access to farm or ranch products, they should have no access to anything that would have to be transported to them, they should not have access to treated water and most importantly the should not receive aid from anyone.
What a bunch of hypocritical losers.
We, Western civilization in particular, are fulfilling Genesis 1:28. It is our commandment.
For those not familiar with Genesis
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and …
> an organisation that researches the systemic causes of the climate crisis and how to tackle them
Classical logical fallacies of assuming the antecedent and affirming the consequent.
The whole organisation’s existence relies on the untested validity of there actually being a “climate crisis”. Without that assumption, the organisation and its funding and staffing ceases to exist.
> that know such as scientists working within limits to growth
That says it all: “limits to growth”: aka
the title of the dubious 50 year old report that the Club of Rome commissioned and which is based on simple computer simulations aptly described at the time as “an empty and misleading work … best summarized … as a rediscovery of the oldest maxim of computer science: Garbage In, Garbage Out”.
Does it really take eleven authors to produce such crap?
Hey! It’s a lot of work to get it Piled higher and Deeper! That’s what all the intellectual morons say!
“We need to become mindful of the way we’re being manipulated,”
I’m mindful of the writer using “we” where he ought to be using “I”.
…though he clearly wants to say “you”.
