Get Ready for Another Pointless United Nations Climate Conference

The United Nations Climate Conference begins November 30 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). More than 70,000 delegates are expected to attend from almost 200 nations. The COP28 event will emit large amounts of carbon dioxide but is unlikely to have any measurable effect on global temperatures.

COP28 is the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, an annual event that has been going on since 1995. The Conference of the Parties is the decision-making body of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), which is an international agreement that was established in 1994 by the UN, with the intention of “preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.”

Pope Francis, King Charles III, Bill Gates, John Kerry, and many other dignitaries will lead the 70,000 attendees. Heads of state, industry and business leaders, leaders of environmental groups, and media representatives will also attend. The Nature Conservancy plans to send representatives from 20 nations.

The attendees will arrive in the UAE primarily by private jet or commercial aircraft, powered by jet fuel. For each kilogram of jet fuel burned, 3.16 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be emitted. They will then travel from the airport to Dubai’s Expo City by limousine or taxi, fueled by gasoline or diesel fuel. Some may take electric vehicles, but these EVs will be charged by UAE electricity, 82% of which is produced by natural gas.

And yet, COP28 delegates will inevitably push for the end of the use of hydrocarbon fuels, which are coal, oil, and natural gas. Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, who is likely to attend, stated in 2021, “If governments are serious about the climate crisis, there can be no new investments in oil, gas, and coal, from now—from this year.” Many delegates support Mr. Birol’s statement.

But most of the conference attendees will have cell phones, which are made from plastic from oil or natural gas. They will be wearing suits, ties, shoes, and other clothing, much of which will be composed of synthetic fibers from hydrocarbons. They will dine on food produced by farms that use synthetic nitrogen fertilizer created from ammonia, produced using natural gas or coal fuels. Hydrocarbons drive our modern society.

Developing nations, too, need oil, gas, and coal to raise the standard of living of their people. Renewables provided only a tiny part of the energy consumed in developing countries in 2022, such as in Africa (2.4%), India (5.9%), the Middle East (0.7%), and Southeast Asia (6.3%). More than 1,000 coal-fired power plants are now being planned or under construction across the world.

Ironically, developing countries appear to be all in for world decarbonization, with heavy participation at annual UN climate conferences. Why shouldn’t they be? Poorer nations seek billions in wealth transfers from richer nations in the name of climate change. For example, prior to the COP26 conference in Scotland in 2021, India demanded $1 trillion per year from wealthy countries to help it reach “net zero” by 2070. About 25 percent of all financial aid to the developing world now goes to fund climate-related projects, up from only four percent in 2005.

COP climate conferences are steeped in hypocrisy. John Kerry, the US climate envoy, is well-known for his CO2-emitting private jet flights, but he considers his work too important to travel by alternatives that emit less CO2. Bill Gates, the billionaire, built and owns a 66,000 square foot mansion in Medina, Washington. His home uses more than 20 times the electricity of a typical US home. Climate change advocates demand emissions reductions from society that they are unwilling to observe themselves.

Not that it matters much, anyway. There is little evidence that the annual COP climate conferences held over the last 27 years have had any effect on the climate. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that the concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere continues to rise steadily. In 2020, global industrial emissions of CO2 declined by over eight percent during the COVID-19 crisis, but this decline was undetectable in the rise in atmospheric CO2.

Nor has there been any significant change in energy consumption. World energy consumption has tripled since 1965. From 2004 to 2021, the world spent about $5 trillion to promote renewable energy and installed more than 300,000 wind turbines. But in 2021, coal, oil, and natural gas still provided 81 percent of global energy consumption, the same percentage as in 1999. The COP climate conferences can best be characterized as futile.

One thing rising faster than world energy use is COP attendance. About 5,000 attended each of the first five COPs, but this rose to over 27,000 for COP15 in Copenhagen and over 30,000 for COP21 in Paris. This year’s conference may have over 70,000 attendees, but “the sky’s the limit” for future attendance at this carbon dioxide-emitting event.

The United Nations describes climate change as “the defining issue of our time.” If we all live long enough, we may have to endure the 50th Conference of the Parties. And it will be just as futile and pointless then as it is now.

Are bugs vegan? I don’t mean do bugs eat a vegan diet, I mean is consuming bugs, bug parts and bug by-products part of a vegan diet?

What if the bugs are insectivores? Or are only locusts vegan?

There are very few places in the world that can accommodate 70,000 visitors – especially at the luxury levels these hypocrites expect. So you wind up in Dubai, because I doubt even Las Vegas could have hosted it.

While it’s unlikely to have the substantial participation of the “ladies of the evening” that’s so prominent at WEF confabs, the COP28 affair is sure to be attended by the classiest and most well-endowed professional women on the planet. Spring break in Cancun and Mazatlan are epic events in North American amateur promiscuity but the principals at the COP infertility rites are coming from all over the world to meet and mingle and for many of them climate change is just another opportunity for a different wardrobe choice.

In the recent past similar events taking place in the US, the Super Bowl, NBA All-Star Game and, biggest of all, the US Open Golf Tournament, attracted well-heeled customers and experienced purveyors but they’re minor league now. In terms of un-taxed transactions and lipstick sales COP 28 will be the event of the year,

Ladies of the night? What about diversity? Those 70,000 participants will include a significant number who belong to the non-binary alphabet soup; their diversity needs to be celebrated (a suitably redesigned logo is offered below), and their carnal tastes need to be satisfied. There should be an equal supply of queers and trannies for rent to make COP28 a truly inclusive event.

And let’s not forget that oppressed and ignored minority – straight women. They need a supply of handsome, well-hung gigolos too. I would offer my services, but I’m busy exploring for lithium this month.

COP28 needs to be more than just squandering taxpayers’ money on private jets, luxury hotels, expensive booze and lavish meals, more than just fatuous posturing for the cameras, more than just making solemn pledges to squander taxpayers’ money on useless schemes – it should also include squandering taxpayers’ money on getting laid as frequently, as inventively and as expensively as possible. After all, if saving the planet isn’t a physically and emotionally satisfying experience, who could we rely on to do all that hard work every year?

Yippee! Glasgow is the most-popular place on earth! More popular even than Paris. Maybe Glasgow City Council could make something of that. Glasgow has the best hotels? Glasgow has the best food? Glasgow provides the best places to park private jets?

The whole thing is a complete waste and an abuse by wealthy elites at the expense of developing nations and the poor. On the other hand it is very convenient to get the world’s top hypocrites all together in one spot for a few days each year. When someone develops a vaccine against stupidity and greed we will know where to deploy it. Anyone missing the shot at COP can be sure to take the jab at the next WEF.

VATICAN CITY, Nov 28 (Reuters) – Pope Francis has cancelled his planned trip to the COP28 climate meeting in Dubai because of the effects of influenza and lung inflammation, the Vatican said on Tuesday, adding to concerns about his health.
The pope, who is 86, was due to begin a three-day visit to Dubai on Friday and the Vatican had said earlier on Tuesday that he was going ahead with the trip.
“Although the Holy Father’s general clinical condition has improved with regard to the flu and inflammation of the respiratory tract, doctors have asked the pope not to make the trip planned for the coming days to Dubai,” the Vatican said.

How many more of these will it take before everyone comes to the obvious conclusion that these are nothing more than virtue signaling fests? Has any country reached their ‘goal’ yet …. except China that has pledged to continue what they are doing, or more aptly, not doing?

“In 2020, global industrial emissions of CO2 declined by over eight percent during the COVID-19 crisis, but this decline was undetectable in the rise in atmospheric CO2.”

I’m surprised about this. I’d think that the measurments (on a mountain in Hawaii?) must be very accurate- to several decimal places??? If so, I’m surprised that the decline wasn’t detectable. Is it just that they’d need more decimal places because the total is so much that an annual increase is so minor that a decrease in the increase just doesn’t amount to much? (trying to pretend I can think like a scientist). If that’s the case, it’s hard to draw any conclusions one way or the other?

In my tongue in cheek paper https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/11/23/the-future-of-cops/ my quadratic curve predicted an attendance at COP28 of nearly 32,000. Seeing it is now 70,000 is this the start of a new Hockey Stick event? Must check with Michael Mann!!

Marc Morano and CFACT’s President Craig Rucker of (The Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow) will be fully credentialed and registered at COP 28 and will be doing daily reports on the dangers facing America and the West from the UN confab.

Anyone needing a laugh should consider the following. The current COP organizers are worried that there will be too many oil company executives among the delegates, and they could weaken any final emissions-reduction decisions. Yet the real irony is that during the early COPs there were few of these executives in attendance; but every one of the meetings still failed to lead to any emissions reductions regardless.

Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s minister for foreign affairs, has been pushing her green nuttery before COP28 with statements like “It is important that we all have the same goal: a climate-neutral and resilient future in which our children can live in security and prosperity.”

I saw this picture with her article. Notice that the young woman holding the poster has a face mask only over her mouth but neither protestor beside her has a mask.
