UAW to Biden: Where are those Good Paying Green Jobs?

The “good paying green jobs” in Lordstown pay half the money the old auto jobs paid, and “we’ve had a couple of fires”.

United Auto Workers Call Out Biden’s Green Agenda for Cutting Wages, Showering Automakers with Billions

By JOHN BINDER 10 Jul 2023

The United Auto Workers (UAW) is going after President Joe Biden’s so-called “green energy” agenda for its wage-cutting outcomes while showering billions in American taxpayer money on the three largest automakers in the nation: Ford, General Motors (GM), and Stellantis.

As part of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, passed last year, automakers are set to enjoy a massive windfall via tax credits for electric vehicles (EVs) made in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

UAW President Shawn Fain, as well as the union’s members in Lordstown, Ohio, are sounding the alarm on severe cuts to auto workers’ wages as a result of the Biden administration’s push to steer automakers towards EVs, enticing them with federal subsidies.

Read more: https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/07/10/united-auto-workers-biden-green-agenda-cutting-wages/

The video released by the United Auto Workers focuses on the impact on Lordstown, of an internal combustion vehicle plant closure followed by a new green factory, which pays a lot less than the old jobs.

The video also seems to claim the new green automobile jobs are dangerous – “there have been fires”.

I sure hope those workers got themselves checked out for exposure to Lithium after dousing any battery fires. Lithium exposure can cause acute and long term health issues, up to and including dementia like brain injuries.

UAW President Shawn Fain also criticised Biden’s subsidies for billionaires, which don’t seem to be “trickling down” to members.

This is a real challenge to Biden’s administration, for one of his allies to come out and criticise him like this.

Shawn Fain is not criticising the principle of Biden’s green transition. But he’d definitely like a lot more of that just transition Biden keeps promising to flow to his members.

Every industry that currently makes physical goods is usually roughly at parity with their international competitors.

However, making THINGS requires energy. As soon as the Green politicians get their claws into your national energy policy apparatus, energy prices are going to go up sharply.

Now your industries are NOT at parity with their international competitors.

Germany is learning this lesson hard. The U.S. blue collar workers are also learning this lesson hard.

The politicians, union leaders, and CEOs that receive green subsidies are profiting by teaching the useful idiots this lesson.

Once lost, these jobs are very difficult to recover.

“The U.S. blue collar workers are also learning this lesson hard.”

Of course they’ve been stiffed for decades as corporations moved their industries to Mexico and China and other nations. Meanwhile, the universities loved having millions of Chinese students paying the full price- mostly studying science and engineering, then going back to China to build advanced industries and now a very powerful military. Both political parties let this happen- which is why I like neither.

Corporations are not “stiffing” workers by moving to other countries.
If those corporations had not moved, they would have gone out of business, and those jobs still would have been lost.

Blame the politicians who are creating an environment in which US based companies can no longer compete on the world market.

What’s particularly ironic about the whole EV push is that they’re not selling worth a damn even with massive government subsidies. Last year they accounted for only 14% of new auto sales globally, but take away those incentives and watch those sales plummet. So the producers are also benefiting from the subsidies while cutting wages to boot, a real win-win situation.

I can anecdotally and happily relay that fact. My wife is looking to purchase a car. We go to a dealership and the salesperson has her test drive a hybrid. We do and besides the safety feature of growling in electric mode the entire time, it was a nice pleasant vehicle. The salesperson asks my wife afterwards if she is interested. My wife immediately answers no and added I don’t want that thing burning down my house. I was so pleased that I told her that she can add any option that she wants.

Yes, as explained to us by the salesperson. My wife and I both thought it was annoying as it did not change pitch only volume. It was raining and my wife is a very cautious driver so the car did not leave electric mode.

According to the IEA China accounted for 60% of all EVs sold in 2022 with Europe (15%) and the US (8%) being the other major markets. Outside these areas sales were low with only 80,000 sold in India, Thailand and Indonesia. In Thailand EV share was just over 3% and in India and Indonesia about 1.5%.

Even in China the industry is having a torrid time with their largest producer, Nio, making huge losses and having to cut prices to shift cars as well as ending its free 6 battery swap out scheme. The Chinese Government recently had to extend tax breaks to 2027 at a cost of £56.9bn ($68.2bn)

BEVs are currently a subsidy mining example of rent seeking. Proles are not really ever considered. Workers are an exhibit, not essential to the rent seeking enterprise.
Actually producing and selling battery electric vehicles was not the goal. I would believe someone made beaucoup money off Lordstown, just not the stockholders or workers.

Henry Ford in the early 1900’s knew that to sell product you had to have well paid workers. He paid his workers well and helped create the auto industry that we know today. Of course he did not have Government subsidies to help him. Any lesson here?

Henry Ford was an excellent marketing man, that particular claim was an excellent example.
Ford paid his workers well for two reasons, the productivity improvements made possible by his assembly lines, made it possible.
Secondly, his factories were not pleasant places to work, so he needed high wages to get people to come and to stay.

Paying your workers more, so that they can afford the products they make is a recipe for bankruptcy, if the only people who can afford your products are your own workers, you will be out of business quite quickly.

Reply to  tmatsci
July 12, 2023 10:04 pm

He had immense worker churn rates, and it was time consuming and expensive to constantly need to hire and train new people.
That was why he first started paying workers what at the time were unheard of rates of pay for the type of work.
It was years later that it occurred to him that if his workers made enough money, they could buy a car themselves. It took some drastic price reductions to make that part happen.
He lowered the selling price by huge percentages.
And by that time, people were falling in love with driving cars anyhow, in the US at least.
Big country, everything is far away, and we had plenty of gasoline, which prior to the advent of IC engines and lots of people owning cars, was a waste product of oil refining. Gasoline used to be dumped, considered a useless nuisance.

There is no comparison between Trump and Biden as far as physical health is concerned.

I don’t know if Joe is just mentally ill, or still immersed in insane leftwing thinking, but either way, his thought processes are seriously flawed.

Trump is the sane one. He gets good things done. I’ll go with Trump, rather than an insane, leftist demagogue, and criminal, like Joe Biden.

Yes, I said criminal.

Joe Biden knew from the very beginning, in 2016, when he was vice president, that the Russia/Trump collusion claims were not true, yet, at the very least, he sat back and allowed his “Justice” Department and the FBI and other federal agencies to attack Trump using these false allegations, thus undermining the U.S. Constitution and making Joe Biden a criminal along with Barack Obama and everyone involved in the Obama-Biden administration.

They are all criminals and all tried to undermine the U.S. Constitution and the voting process using the power of the federal government against innocent American citizens. And I personally think that Barack Obama and Joe Biden orchestrated this attack on their political opposition. I can’t prove it, but I can’t see their minions doing what they did without direction/permission from the Top.

Joe Biden is corrupt and he is a criminal.

Joe is just standing on the shoulders of his predecessor. Over 500,000 jobs were created during Trump’s last quarter in office, and the continued job growth is because of Trump policies and an inherently strong American economy.

Everything Joe has done harms the U.S. economy and causes fewer jobs to be created. Just think what the U.S. economy would be doing if Joe had left Trump’s policies in place: 1.4 percent inflation, growth rate about 6 percent, gasoline prices about two dollars a gallon.

Biden is taking the credit, but the economy is the way it is despite Biden, not because of Biden.

Notice that Simon can’t point to a single thing that Biden has done that has strengthened the US economy. Like most leftists he just assumes that anything good that has happened since his guy to office must have been because of his guy.

Yes, I would love to hear what Simon thinks Biden did that was good for the U.S. economy. Biden’s first day in office, he killed the Keystone Pipeline.

Presidents can affect certain aspects of the economy for good or ill. Trump basically gave the market a “leg up” to develop with tax cuts and regulation cuts, and the economy responded with real vigor, until the Pandemic shutdowns took place.

Biden, on the other hand, did everything that would hamper the economy from growing causing inflation, and higher gasoline and energy prices.

Any good in the American economy did not come from Joe Biden.

Oh yes I can. Wanna hear? I bet you do….

He has created more than 12 million jobs—including more than 800,000 manufacturing jobs, so now the unemployment rate is at a 54-year low, including near record lows for Black workers.

Signed into law the CHIPS and Science Act and Inflation Reduction Act. The Biden administration’s economic agenda—most notably the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the CHIPS and Science Act—has helped spur private sector investments in a range of areas.

The Biden administration sought to expand the capacity of U.S. ports to ease COVID-19-related supply chain bottlenecks that have fueled inflationary pressures.

Once again, Simon assumes that if happened after Biden took office, Biden must have been responsible.
BTW, there was no inflation reduction in the Inflation Reduction Act, once again assumes that if the DNC says something it MUST be true.

Tapping the strategic reserve didn’t even undo the damage he had already done with canceling pipelines and new regulations.

Seeking to expand port capacity doesn’t create jobs, actually expanding port capacity could do so, but that takes decades.

Wow, perfecting the world through yet more unneeded regulations.

Yeah, pretty much.

I can’t give Biden any credit because all the things he has done have harmed the U.S. economy and set it back. He created huge amounts of inflation with his reckless spending and his efforts to kill the oil and gas industries.

Running up cost of everything leads to job cuts not job increases, and if you look at the statistics, last month suppoedly created 209,000 jobs, but after a little scrutiny it is seen that only about 99,000 jobs were created, and the trend is *down*. We may be heading into a recession thanks in no small part ot what Biden had done in the few short years he had been in office.

If Biden did anything to improve the ports handling of cargo, it’t about the only positive thing he has done. And I don’t know if that’s the case or not, I’m just taking your word for it.

If you really believe the words you wrote then you are even more deluded than I thought. Obama inherited a failing economy on every scale. The dow was plummeting (You can check here https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EDJI/) and his first task was to turn the global financial crisis around which he did with a major stimulus package. If you want to rewrite history Mark you need to choose events that are not easily checked. Obamas performance in his first years with regard to the economy was one of his highlights. The fake Green utopian world we have been promised so often just never gets out of the starting blocks does it.
All the Green jobs, all the new technologies, all the environmental positives, where are they?
There is a whole propaganda industry built around ‘bigging’ up the coming Green changes.
The new technology is always being developed in some far away place, China is favourite of course as no one can challenge the story of a new breakthrough where China is involved. The hype around sodium ion batteries replacing the now universally accepted negatives that surround the lithium ion current tech option, being one more useless example. Or maybe hydrogen being the go to option to replace natural gas heating systems? Interestingly the pilot village in northern England that was being forced to adopt the trial of hydrogen, has now been abandoned. The people there didn’t want hydrogen and made it impossible for the trial to take place.
The ongoing destruction of natural habitats in wild places to accommodate wind turbines plus the increasing bird kill of those remote industrial scale mincing installation has at last been spotted by joe public.
Solar on industrial scale yet generating next to nothing in our 50+ northern latitudes, gets full press coverage for its potential, while it’s actually destroying our landscapes and closing down our farming industries. Solar, is worse than wind energy projects and that is some achievement right there.
The ongoing deindustrialisation of the West must be stopped.

When an 18 acre solar “farm” was built next to my ‘hood, the company hired 40 electricians to do most of the work. It took them a few months- then they were laid off. So, these highly skilled workers have become like lettuce pickers. Joe Biden has paid off the Unions handsomely:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/08/us/politics/biden-union-pensions.html

Biden Devotes $36 Billion to Save Union Workers’ Pensions

“The money comes from last year’s Covid-19 relief package and will avert cuts of up to 60 percent in pensions for 350,000 Teamster truck drivers, warehouse and construction workers and food processors.
