In alarmist fantasy land, climate skeptics have accepted climate models, and now focus on spreading despair.
Too late to save the planet? Why this climate crisis myth is so prevalent – and problematic

- The idea that it’s too late to halt the climate crisis has been gaining ground recently.
- It’s become the most popular cry of former climate change sceptics, say researchers.
- But it’s also the view of many people who want to help, but are overwhelmed by the challenge.
- While the world has been given ‘a final warning’, scientists say there is still time for action, but myths like these are stalling mitigation efforts.
The world has been given a “final warning” about the climate emergency. The United Nations says action is needed “on all fronts – everything, everywhere, all at once”. So why do so many people think nothing can be done to halt climate change?
…
‘It’s too late’ – a dominant climate myth
And yet, researchers have found that increasing numbers of people say that it’s too late to save the planet. In fact, it’s become the leading climate myth globally, outpacing arguments that the science is wrong or that rising temperatures are not due to human activity.
A study by academics from the UK, Ireland and the United States found the argument that “it’s too late” had become the dominant climate myth among climate sceptics over the past 10 years and said it was holding back climate action.
Researchers believe critics changed tack because evidence of human-caused climate change has become overwhelming. “Science denial has become untenable,” John Cook, a study author and research fellow at Monash University told Forbes magazine.
“So inevitably, opponents of climate action are strategically shifting to misinformation targeting climate solutions in order to delay climate policy,” he added. “My gut instinct was that science myths were much more prevalent than they actually are, when our analysis found they were a relatively small proportion of climate misinformation.”

I suspect what we’re seeing is actually the growth of quiet climate skepticism.
Climate predictions are garbage. Not only has global warming failed to occur at the predicted rate, there is also a complete absence of evidence that global warming presents an actual problem.
As I’ve repeatedly mentioned, our monkey ancestors spread from the tropics to the high arctic during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, all the way up to Greenland, because 5C+ of global warming turned most of the Earth into a paradise for our warmth loving primate ancestors.
If our monkey ancestors managed to thrive in a much warmer world, there is no doubt we could figure it out.
There are only so many failed end of the world, end of snow and ice free arctic predictions people can accept, before they start taking the latest prognostication with a big grain of salt.
So how do you deflect criticism for your personal lack of climate zeal, if you don’t want to get into a big argument about why climate disaster predictions are a crock of proverbial?
One solution is to say “it’s too late, so why should I bother?”. Believers cannot challenge this assertion – they half believe it themselves – so they leave you alone to your “misery” – you poor thing, you don’t bother recycling anymore because you don’t see the point.
It’s not difficult to trace why people have suddenly become more skeptical. All the lies told during the Covid lockdown, only to discover once the lockdowns were lifted, that what we were dealing with was bad flu?
In the wake of the Covid lies and exaggerations, why should anyone take any government funded scientific claims seriously?
So no, we haven’t abandoned criticising climate models. Most models are running implausibly hot, they’re obviously wrong.
But watching the dying climate alarmism movement flailing about, fabricating nonsensical straw man claims about climate skeptics, trying to blame everything for their own failure other than their personal incompetence, its an entertaining spectacle as we wait for the rising fake AI crisis to take center stage.
John Cook has a vivid fantasy life. He may even believe his 97% claim means something significant.
Yuck, thanks for reminding me…
Cook’s creepy self portrait:
To believe the 97% consensus BS is to also believe that that feisty 3% who apparently are holding back action on climate must be incredibly smart and powerful.
Yes Garry, my bullshit meter is on overdrive with this article. Cook and the Monash climate team in general are definitely off the planet, with their concocted climate alarmism. It’s really the endless money trough not ethical science that has them enslaved to the AGW hypothesis. So it is past time these charlatans were made to justify their jobs. Do proper due diligence on climate science and not just pull the wool over their eyes and our’s, and ignore the real world out there.
People are actually suffering because of their ignoble dire climate advocacy, is creating policies that hurt society, not help it! A little bit of honesty from these academics could go a long way towards a proper debate on contentious climate issues.
But its hot in Mexico and South Texas! For a couple hours in the afternoon its above 110F. Thats racism!!!!!
In Australia we call that “Summer”… 🙂
What we have here is a high pressure system hovering over Texas (center marked) which is causing things to heat up underneath it. It will stay very hot until the high pressure system moves away.

Obviously unprecedented.
Well done, sir.
And THAT is what the alarmists have been saying for years,
In southern Arizona the sightly above normal, this time of the year normal is 107 F. I do have to admit June been nice here less than a 100 most of the time(that does not happen often) and the Chev Colorado temperature reading have not be above 110 much. It is hot when the measures Colorado temps are in the 120s. Oh side note, I ate lunch outside it was around 100 at that time yesterday. Generally I consider it to hot if it above 110.
3C in Alberta this morning, snowed in some places, unusually cold, following 125 mm of rain that put out the forest fires that were apparently caused by climate change drought merely 3 weeks ago….In the media….nada….Alberta being quite a bit bigger than Spain for those always worried about heat waves in Spain…..
Beauty day golfing out in Kananaskis today.
Probably not a good idea to run submarines on solar power.
The idiots are gong to try it.
Nah … give them enough time to line up their brains, and the idea will will probably sink.
Cheers,
b.
Well, if that’s going to be the depth of your comment . . .
Perhaps we should encourage it.
Not a bad idea as long as the crew are all alarmists and their enabling politicians.
“While the world has been given ‘a final warning’, scientists say there is still time for action, but myths like these are stalling mitigation efforts.”
This is just laughable. Which version of “final warning” are we on now? About 35? (One for every year since the Hansen testimony to a Senate committee in 1988.)
Sheesh.
You may not remember the backing off of the “the next Ice Age is coming right soon now” of the 1970’s and early 1980’s.
Mind you, how we were supposed to deal with Global Cooling was the exact same sort of thing we are supposed to do for Global Warming.
Yes. “Send money”. (This is to facilitate owning nothing and being happy.)
In case of global warming, I will turn on my AC
In case of global cooling, I will turn on the heat
I just do not see the problem the way John Kerry claims he does, while he travels on one of his private jets hither and yon
The weaker the bite, the louder the bark. If their claims about catastrophic warming were even remotely accurate, we’d not only be seeing it by now, but the majority of people in the industrialized world would notice it and be clamoring for immediate action. Because most aren’t (on both counts), and because other little things like global pandemics and skyrocketing inflation seem to affect people more, the warmists must keep barking louder and louder.
Send money to increase the barking
“A study by academics from the UK, Ireland and the United States found the argument that “it’s too late” had become the dominant climate myth among climate sceptics over the past 10 years and said it was holding back climate action.”
I count myself as a skeptic, nay even a denier, but never have I nor any skeptic I have read said “it’s too late”. Nor would we because we don’t think there is a problem that needs to be solved by shutting down industrial civilization or anything like it.
We do take the liberty of reminding the the warmunists that their predictions of doom have so far been bootless. But that is not the same as saying its too late.
It leads me to the real question I have. What color is the sky in the Doug Broom’s world?
This is yet another proof that the CAGW crowd knows the writing is on the wall so they need a scapegoat. They have nothing but alarmism, failed climate models, anecdotal evidence, failed predictions of abnormal sea level rise, droughts, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, melting glaciers, disappearing sea ice and on and on. The only thing they have gotten right is that man is adding CO2 to the atmosphere, big deal we all know that. But it is someone else’s fault that they are wrong.
I wish you were correct about the alarmists seeing the writing on the wall, but sadly, I don’t think that is the case. They’ve been pounded with facts obliterating their nonsense for decades, but it never deters or dissuades them. These people are devoid of any faith in traditional religions so they’ve made “saving the planet” their own religion. What could be more virtuous than saving the planet? And anyone saying anything contradicting their sacred dogmas are blasphemers. They won’t ever give up on their idiocy until they no longer have functioning brains, or are so mocked and ridiculed they keep their nonsense somewhere private.
It was not skeptics that that declared one “tipping point” after another. It was the alarmists in the UN and Academia.
And the fact that the mitigation efforts and all the conferences and the Paris Accord have not worked to stop the rise of co2 is not the fault of the skeptics either.
Nor have skeptics been the ones to predict one climate disaster after another, none of which have occurred or appear about to occur. It was not sceptics that declared “we’re toast” or “the arctic is screaming” or “that the arctic will be ice free by 2008” or that anyone that is going to survive need to move to Antarctica, or any number of other hyperbolic declarations by “climate scientists” and then as the world watched nothing happened.
It was not skeptics that have held one climate conference after another with absolutely no results evident in slowing the rise of atmospheric co2!
They have been digging a hole in the sand and lately have accelerated the digging. It will not be sceptics fault when that hole collapses and buries them.
Another Final Countdown?

From the article: “While the world has been given ‘a final warning’, scientists say there is still time for action, but myths like these are stalling mitigation efforts.”
I don’t think so. The “mitigation” efforts are going “full steam ahead” despite what the skeptics say. I don’t see any stalling of the efforts of the climate alarmists.
The warmists are starting to PANIC.
If the truth was on their side there climate models would agree with what has happened in the last 40 years of recorded climate .
Far more harm will be caused to the human race attempting to go carbon zero than a very mild warming.
As I have written here before most of these people WEF and the UN do not care if the world runs out of food because of restrictions on nitrogen fertilizer and the massive extra costs that farmers and growers are forced to pay , right around the world .
These idiots seem to think that you can ferment food in vats but they have not got a clue as you cannot get nutrients out of the air except CO2 which they have vilified.
All the essential proteins carbohydrates ,fats and amino acids including trace minerals that humans need to grow and survive have to come from the soil via plants that we consume or via animals that consume plants to lay eggs or produce milk .
We eat the animals that provide all the nutrients for humans food that and we also farm fish and shell fish .
The question I ask of these people pushing this idea is why ever consider fermented food when farmers and growers have perfected the production of high quality food .
We ferment barley with some hops to make beer but the barley has been grown and extracted every thing to grow except CO2 from the soil.
If their models did agree with what had happened in the last 40 years, there would be no alarm.
I think you’re missing the point of their true intentions. They want to significantly depopulate the planet, and what better way than to starve people. And as part of that process, they want to force migrations of people to higher density urban centers where they can more easily be controlled.
So in the actual paper where there was “NO Claim” the computer only got it right 50% of the time. How bizarre.
”In alarmist fantasy land, climate skeptics have accepted climate models,”
Well I’m speechless. Wait… no I’m not. Douglas Broom, you are a moron.
“”In alarmist fantasy land, climate skeptics have accepted climate models,””
But we do accept climate models…
.. as NOTHING but meaningless, unvalidated, child-like computer games.
As is reported repeatably here, if CO2 and warm temperatures are good for animal and plant life, why not promote it rather than meekly claim global warming is “not bad”? Go on the offense. Your global warming adversaries are not afraid, why are skeptics so meek?
Why not, indeed. I for one am not a sceptic. I am an absolute rejectionist. There is nothing wrong with CO2 “emissions.” We should state this loudly and boldly. I am not any kind of liked warmest. There is NO evidence that humans are contributing to any amount of “warming.”
Everybody knows that CO2 is absolutely necessary for life on Earth, and has been in short supply for a long time.
Yes, The alarmists KNOW THIS.
They also KNOW that the planet has been significantly warmer for most of the last 10,000 years, and that the warmer times were times of prosperity.
Thing is, it is not about CO2, it is a POLITICAL ploy aimed at bringing about the socialist/marxist downgrading of western society.
I don’t know that
“Everybody knows that CO2 is absolutely necessary for life on Earth, and has been in short supply for a long time.”
I’ve come across many who are unaware of both facts, and even more unaware of the latter. There are very few who can give an accurate number for atmospheric CO2 content and even fewer who can say by how much it has risen since the end of the last glaciation
Alarmist scientists most certainly KNOW it. !
“Go on the offense. Your global warming adversaries are not afraid, why are skeptics so meek?”
Censorship. I’ve been on the offensive for 25 years. Comments that use empirical evidence and peer reviewed research which destroy the false narratives being presented are removed and even result in suspensions. I’m careful to not violate terms of use. Name calling is allowed against me consistently. I calmly stick to the on topic facts in response. From experience I know where their lines are so have to self censor to be in discussions at all.
The few mainstream comment sections that didn’t censor stopped allowing comments because the Left wing ideologies media was pushing were being demolished by rational arguments.
The measured greening of the planet attributed to our emissions drives the brainwashed crazy. I’ve been asking “what if us releasing the trapped CO2 was the greatest symbiotic gift humans have ever given nature?” That is so far outside their frame of reference they have been letting those comments stand.
Possibly too late to save the world from moronic idiocies like Decarbonisation and Net Zero !
Their real goals are not stated decarbonization or Net Zero, but institutionalizing carbon taxes, which is the same as taxing all economic activity. Their problem is that the world is too diverse, and the developing countries will not accept it.
In his tiny circle of manic climate alarmists, and low-end psychologist academics,.,
… I doubt the Cookie Monster would have ever talked to a so-called “climate denier”
He would not have the vaguest clue what we are saying about him and his moronic little fantasies !
Like everything else he has ever published.. he just makes-it-up ..
.. and it consists purely and simply of male-bovine rear-end projectiles.
Today is winter solstice day down under and the RC aircon has been cranking heat-
Australia weather: When the winter cold snap will end | news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site
2 pm in the arvo in Adelaide and my 6.64kW nameplate rooftop solar system has produced 1.3kWhrs total so far today when it can easily produce up to 44 kWhrs total on pleasant sunny days.
It’s like this climate changers. All we need do is tap the phone app to see what a load of BS is being spouted about changing the weather and how unreliables are going to help with some of the world’s most expensive power bills already. Tap anytime and we know you’re either technically illiterate or ignorant morons or deliberately lying to us or some combination of the three. It’s somewhat academic as to the mix.
Update: Generated 1.8kWhrs for the day
Don’t you mean 1,800,000 mWhrs?
I work at the Salt Lake International Airport transporting those who are incapable of walking to their next gate or baggage claim. I make pretty extensive conversation with them. It’s not your imagination; people are skeptical. Granted most of them are above 65 in age but still it can’t be a coincidence that every person over 65 I’ve talked to about climate change is skeptical of most of what the media / “scientists” say. It’s not your imagination.
As someone whose wife has severe Arthritisin both knees I’d like to say thank you for doing that job. The worst one is being replaced on Fête nationale so hopefully mobility will be improved
Climate bed wetters are too stupid to know when they are being mocked It is as simple as that
Here attached is a picture of my garden – Spaghetti Style as is all the rage these days
All the data is fresh as a daisy, harvested this very morn and completely unadjusted.
It is my garden as seen by 3 thermometers.
An electronic logger with 0.1°C resolution, in a sunshade enclosure dangling 6ft above grass and under a coniferous tree (a big bushy one- not at all like a Christmas Tree)An identical in every way datalogger hanging in wide open space from a washing line about 30metres away from (1) aboveThe nearest Wunderground personal weather-station – presumably using very similar technology to what ‘proper official’ weather stations use. About 1 mile directly west and, just like mine, as rural as you can get.Data recorded at 10 minute intervals from midnight through to 07:00BST on 23 June 2023So, innit very lovely picture, eat your hearts out Climate Scientists
Two questions:
What was the temperature here this morning?Where is CO₂ in that image, compared to other things like ‘dew’ ‘moisture’ ‘location’ ‘shade’ ‘proximity of plantlife’ ‘the urban island’ ‘sunrise’ ‘El Sol’ and other things
edit to attend to obvious wonderation.
Sunrise was at 04:40 local BST time today
and next time, (calm yourselves) I’ll include data from my actual ‘underground’ datalogger – (the one on the Real Actual Surface of Earth where all the fuss is about) covered with bubble-wrap above it and under a heavy concrete flagstone atop all that.
But I only visit it at month’s end.
Nice one, Peta! It would be both interesting and informative to see the plots onwards, when available, from 0700 through the day up to midnight so we can get the 24 hour picture.
It’s “too late” to be able to claim that the coming cool phase will be attributable to reduced emissions, as it will expose the scam:
Do not worry, if they ever feel like they owe the world any explanation (big if), they will come up with ad hoc handwaving modeling that warming causes cooling, but we (humanity) are still to be blamed and taxed for the climate instability, and, of course, more money is needed for research.
From the linked Forbes article:
Now we have prebunking and mental antibodies
Nutty professors sure enough.
“Prebunking” sounds a lot like using propaganda, to me.
I didn’t need nutty professors to give me “mental antibodies”, I developed critical thinking about the Earth’s climate all on my own, after listening to all the lies and distortions put forth by climate scientists promoting Human-caused Global Cooling back in the 1970’s. Global Cooling didn’t happen, and now these same climate scientists are promoting Human-caused Global Warming. Eventually, people will see that there is no more substance to the Global Warming claim than there was for the Global Cooling claim.
So, in the future, more people will develop “mental antibodies” naturally, as a result of climate change alarmist failed predictions.
Our politicians need to develop some “mental antibodies” and stop taking us down the Road to Ruin over the benign gas, CO2.
“The United Nations says action is needed “on all fronts – everything, everywhere, all at once”.”
The hysteria is reaching new heights!
crazy, crazy, crazy! Implying that climate skeptics have numerous myths and this is the biggest one. Yet I haven’t seen a single climate skeptic say that, other than in jest, perhaps.
Perhaps they can’t tell the difference between speaking in jest and being completely serious.
Alarmists in particular and leftists in general seem to lack a sense of humor.
Academic social psychology has shown itself willing to be home to this kind of nonsense. In the longer run this will probably not look well. The subject makes a habit of cloaking commonplace insights and observations in polysyllabic fluff. Little further is achieved by this, other than a claim to academic sanction for tendentious positions. The idea that the mind of the ‘climate denier’ can somehow be read by the wise social psychologist is, as most readers of this blog know, an absurd one. We must hope that the absurdity will come back to bite these academic fools, as the climate change discourse slowly collapses.
Academia is indeed a major factor in climate hysteria. Railroad engineers, plumbers, iron workers, brick layers, etc. don’t originate climate models. As the number of “unskilled” workers falls, new entrants to the world of employment feel that their life will be improved by a stint in academia, perhaps leading to a lifetime there or the next best thing, bureaucracy. At one end of this spectrum it’s necessary to propose theories that explain and ameliorate events, in the past, present and future. On the other is the duty to make sure through the power of the state that the academic proposals are accepted and followed. This path doesn’t just include climate science. Medicine, finance, monetary policy, foreign affairs, almost every feature of modern life, is subject to this paradigm. The legal profession makes it their job to append as much expense to the process as possible. It can’t go on forever.
