“The [climate issue] perception gap is an information problem”

Ingmar Rentzhog’s August 16, 2026 Forbes article “Why The 89% Climate Majority Keeps Losing” asserts that while polling shows a supposed 89% majority of people approve action to stop climate change, this ‘majority’ is seemingly unaware of how they have the public pressure power to get such action done. With particular regard to what he suggests is the disparity between having power and then using it, he offered this basic truism:

The perception gap is an information problem, and information problems can be fixed.

Yes, the climate issue problem absolutely can be fixed with more information … just in the diametrically opposite way he’s proposing.

I have to laugh whenever I get these kinds of articles results out of the daily email alert I get from Google on global warming stories – just as I did with the result I wrote about in my prior blog post on the same basic theme about a pair of ‘journalism professors’ lamenting ineffective ‘climate concern communication.’ We have one of two situations going on here, it’s embarrassing both ways. Either these kinds of article authors are oblivious to how more information about the climate issue for widespread public consumption can ultimately kill the issue completely, exposing it for the amount of actual disinformation their side puts out, or they are crossing their fingers in a fervent hope that the public accepts the claims about “settled science” / “liars-for-hire” skeptic climate scientists and never goes looking for more information to check the veracity of the claims.

At the end of my prior blog post the pair of ‘journalism professors’, I said there might be a Part 2 for it if the professors answered my curiosity question of how they – or anyone, for that matter – should respond after reactions to their predictions of impending climate doom concern simply the mere existence of skeptic climate scientists disputing such predictions. I emailed Ingmar Rentzhog with this same basic inquiry. I’m not holding my breath for a reply.

I can offer an educated guess regarding what he thinks of such skeptic scientists. Part of my guess comes out of the clickable link for what was in his line immediately following his above “perception gap” sentence:

Research shows that when people learn how many others actually support climate action, they become more willing to act themselves.

Rentzhog’s clickable link goes to a page where his readers must then click on an additional PDF file link leading to a paper on “Misperceived Social Norms and Willingness to Act Against Climate Change” which has an annoying “Uncorrected Proof” watermark on every single page (a version conveniently without that distraction is here). The paper blithely goes on at huge length about ‘misperceptions’ on what is supposedly otherwise settled science, and then offers a single assertion within its conclusion (both paper versions) relying on a dubious pair of citation sources which undercuts its entire credibility:

It is equally crucial to avoid giving undue attention to the small, vocal group that opposes climate action or even denies climate change (Boykoff & Boykoff, 2004; Oreskes & Conway, 2010), a factor that could have contributed to Americans’ underestimation of their peers’ readiness to take action.

The authors of that paper could not support the rationale behind their assertion with the sources they have if their reputations depended on it.

Meanwhile, back to the main topic of Ingmar Rentzhog’s Forbes article. What forms the other part of my educated guess about Rentzhog’s likely answer on what to say about skeptic climate scientists? Look no farther than within his Forbes bio page:

Ingmar is also a trained Climate Reality Leader under Al Gore.

That Al Gore, the documentary movie star who segued in his 2006 “An Inconvenient Truth” from Naomi Oreskes’ 100% science consensus study result numbers straight into his implication that a tiny handful of skeptic scientists were directed to … wait for it … “reposition global warming as theory.” The very same Al Gore who taught Climate Reality Project students what to think and say.

And where did the whole notion of not giving fair media balance come up in a prominent way? The place where Ross Gelbspan quoted alarmist climate scientist Dr Stephen Schneider as saying nobody should give fair media time to skeptics, and Al Gore implying everyone should be angry with anybody who opposes the clear science certainty.

Much like the example I pointed to in my prior blog post about overconfident ‘climate journalists’ counting on an informed public that’ll never question what is fed to them on the ‘climate crisis,’ Forbes article Rentzhog here seems to think the 89% majority he points to has some kind of majority power. More troubling is the threat he implies against anybody who dares to question any part of the man-caused global warming orthodoxy. But he ends his piece with the same faulty notion I pointed to in my prior blog post. Take Rentzhog’s words and mirror-flip them against him – the ‘proverbial light’ he sees at the end of the tunnel on getting the public fully informed on the climate issue is actually a train headed right at him that will run right over him and the entire rest of the climate issue:

The first job of the common sense movement is no longer to create a majority for stronger action against the emotion-based / anti-intellectual ‘climate crisis’ pushers. That majority already exists. The job now is to introduce the majority to the imperative to get environmental policymaking back to being fact-based / science-based, and the imperative to hold all of those who promulgated disinformation about the issue accountable in a prominent enough way that all of the public understands how they were duped and herded by a tiny minority of enviro-activists and complicit legacy news media journalists, who had far monopoly media power and dictatorial control than they ever were entitled to have.

The ‘climate information’ problem cannot be fixed, because the ‘information’ was/is wrong.

  1. Climate models (with only 1 CMIP6 exception) produce a tropical troposphere hotspot that does not exist in reality. They are wrong. The only one that doesn’t (INM CM5) says there is no future climate problem since its equilibrium sensitivity is only 1.8C.
  2. The ‘information’ that sea level rise would accelerate is wrong.
  3. The ‘information’ that Arctic summer sea ice would disappear by 2016 is wrong.
  4. The ‘information that accelerating sea level rise threatens Pacific atolls is wrong—for 2 reasons. First, no acceleration. Second, measured atoll surface area is increasing.
  5. The information that renewables are low cost is wrong.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong is NOT a fixable ‘climate information’ problem.

You can add to that list:

Polar bears don’t need the sea ice, it’s the seals that need the ice.
Methane is not 82.5 times more powerful at “trapping heat” than CO2.
Tide gauges show acceleration of sea level rise to be nearly zero. (#2 on the list)
If the Himalayan glaciers melt away, the rivers will still flow.
Corals live in the tropics. Warm tropical water does not cause bleaching.
There isn’t a down side to increasing CO2 in the atmosphere.
Sequestering carbon dioxide accomplishes absolutely nothing.
Climate scientists rewrite historical data continuously.
Geoengineering schemes are entirely without merit.

And then this six point list that has been slapped up here on WUWT several times:

1. More rain is not a problem.
2. Warmer weather is not a problem.
3. More arable land is not a problem.
4. Longer growing seasons is not a problem.
5. CO2 greening of the earth is not a problem.
6. There isn’t any Climate Crisis.

Besides all that, anyone who graduated from public schools prior to the early ’80s knows that the weather hasn’t changed very much. It’s a matter of when did public schools begin to churn out climate change propaganda in earnest.

Actually, if it were to cool before all the Himalayan glaciers melt, the Summer runoff would decline, creating problems for those who have become dependent on the meltwater. The problem is that the demand for water has grown so large that natural variation creates episodic problems. Warming does create a risk of eventually having consistent water shortages during Summer melting, but cooling will similarly reduce Summer melt. Any way you cut it, the demand has, or soon will, exceed the ability of the system to provide a reliable amount. Therefore, even if humans are responsible for the recent warming, stopping that warming will not provide extra water to meet the needs of an expanding population.

Two ways for water lack to happen: freeze it, use it all up.

Freeze it and no water flow. Use it all up and no water for new use (and perhaps for current use).

This is the way of it, no matter where you go in the climate issue: “the science is settled” / “don’t give equal journalism time to industry-corrupted skeptic climate scientists.” After 35+ years of the Al Gore era of the climate issue, that pair of talking points is all the whole climate issue ultimately burns down to. Ask any one of the prominent pushers of the issue what their evidence is to support the talking point about “crooked skeptic scientists” – their ‘evidence’ ultimately always cascades back to the same worthless ‘leaked memos evidence’ promulgated by the same core little group of people.

The enviros are bizarrely oblivious to how weak their enslavement is to the “crooked skeptic scientists” accusation is. But the thing that kills me is how the major influential people on our side – the DoJ, congressional investigators, the law firms defending the energy company defendants in all of the “ExxonKnew” lawsuits – seem not to be even remotely aware that they can exploit that weakness to its fullest. Call in the majors – Al Gore / Naomi Oreskes / the top end ex-Greenpeace guys – who’ve pushed the false accusations, and/or call in those folks’ weak link subordinates, put them under oath, and ask them where they got their worthless ‘leaked memos evidence’ and their instructions on what to do with that garbage …….. and it’s a sure bet they will fold like cheap suits under withering questions. The whole climate issue would be put in peril because the best thing the climate mob ever had to support their cause was not real science, but instead the tactic of prompting the public, by any means possible, to never take what skeptic scientists said seriously.

To paraphrase an advertising slogan from the days when Ma Bell was a monopoly, “Reach out and scare someone!”

Who cares about facts? Facts are tedious. “Maybe things aren’t so bad,” is even more tedious. Slumber party ghost stories are captivating. Tales of sinister machinations are captivating. Doomsday is captivating. Fear is more exciting than facts.

When are the climate paparazzi going to grok that when the public responds to polling questions, a great number of the respondents tell the pollsters what the responders think the pollsters want to hear.

It’s a kind of “whatever . . . ” type of response.
A tactic to get the pollster off the phone asap.

(Disclosure – I’m no stranger to this tactic myself 🙂 )

One can word a poll to produce any result and the people responding will never suspect.

It truly is an “information problem”.
Too many activists are miss informed by Socialist Liberal Media on false data sources
And
Too many climate realists well informed by genuine data sources and not polluted by liberal schooling.
So … Yes … it is an information problem!

yes, they are very misinformed (one word).. as the local climate trolls prove all the time..

.. although I think ‘malinformed’, would be a better word.

Regarding Greta herself, the jury might be still out on whether her parents and others immediately surrounding her simply misinformed her, or did that bunch have dollar signs in their eyes and deliberately disinformed her in order to exploit her fame for all it was worth? At the end of my 2019 blog post “What was #Greta Thunberg Taught, and Who Taught Her about It?,” I ended on this idea of how entertaining it might be if she turned the tables on her teachers (this was before she went off the rails on Middle East policy):

. . . . Maybe it’s too late for Greta to recapture what she’s lost in her earlier teenage years, and hopefully she can find a graceful way to exit the issue before her fame implodes in an embarrassing way. The silver lining to her situation may be that later when she is an adult and able to reflect more deeply on the whole situation, she can sue her parents for robbing her of an ordinary teenager’s life she was entitled to enjoy. She might grow up to be a leader in an area nobody intended for her, a case study of what one-sided indoctrination can do to a child, and how such unfairness can be overcome. . . . .

It’s propaganda all the way down. Combining money with religious cult fervor is a recipe for never-ending proselytization. Groupthink at its worst.

I choose not to give the scammers any help at all, but rather to fight them as best I can. I try to seek the truth – if I could find real evidence that mankind was causing catastrophic climate change I would change my mind. But I believe that most if not all of the slight warming is caused by natural cycles and the Sun, that it’s beneficial overall, and that natural variability is so much greater than any possible contribution by human beings. And CO2 is NOT the temperature control knob for the planet.

We have warming? That’s not warming. Coming out of this latest Ice Age some thousands of years ago when mile-thick glaciers melted, now THAT’S warming!

The reason is that there has been less energy in the atmospheric system generated from the equatorial region.

When you look at the dilution of ozone above Antarctica – it is late and low.

Today is a nice day (where I’m writing from) in 2026.

“the small, vocal group that opposes climate action or even denies climate change (Boykoff & Boykoff, 2004; Oreskes & Conway, 2010)”

2026-2010 = 16 years ago
2026-2004 = 22 years ago

All that time and nobody on the ‘better writers’ side of the educational system has written anything more thorough, definitive or persuasive to reference?

Other than climate models and studies using the discredited RCP 8.5 scenario have the scientists on the other side produced any other work? The models don’t match observations and the 8.5 pathway is implausible, looks to me like it is a lose lose for them.

To extend the above, the several actual data sets for global temperatures over the last 45+ years, shows less rise than all of the IPCC computer-generated scenarios, plus many estimates for doubling CO2 concentrations from 400 ppm to 800 ppm being less than 1 deg. C, so there is no reason for any climate alarm, or ‘climate action.’ The physical absorption properties of IR in the atmosphere show that CO2 is having little effect on global temperatures, now nor in the future. We should keep using fossil fuels and forget about expensive renewables.

Back in the 1970s following the Vietnam debacle and the watergate affair, the media came up with a term for why people were reluctant to believe the government. It fits this situation to a tee, probably why the media doesn’t want resurrect it— “The Credibility Gap.” the alarmists have lied so often, nobody believes them anymore. Adding “information” will fall on deaf ears, and tinkering with “perception” is a fool’s errand, suitable only for mental masturbation in the faculty lounge.

still famous accusation about crooked skeptic scientists being paid to “reposition global warming as theory”

I have asked the Microsoft LLM AI agent, Copilot, to provide me with the details on how much has been paid and when, to whom and by whom. It reported that there is no public record of those details. If there is no record of those payments, the IRS should be interested in un-reported income. What is happening is character assassination by the likes of Oreskes and others with innuendo and what is little better than an Urban legend. If she wants to be taken seriously, she should provide a list with details for all the alleged payments.

There may be 89% that support climate action, but that doesn’t tell you how strongly they want climate action. When you ask a question like would you support climate change policies if it meant you had to pay more for food or energy the number that support it drops down well below the majority.

Apparently the “climate information problem” is not lack of data. It’s lack of propaganda. Never mind real knowledge. Not enough people are scared out of their wits.
