New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Chief Climate Officer and New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala today released the city’s first integrated greenhouse gas inventory, which incorporates emissions from the production and consumption of food. Those emissions represent 20 percent of New York City’s overall emissions — the third largest source, behind buildings (35 percent) and transportation (21 percent).
Just like cars and individual liberty, the food will have to go. New Yorkers will look back nostalgically for the days when Mayor Bloomberg merely wanted to cut salt and ban soda. They’re coming for your meat, fish and eggs.
In response to the new inventory, Mayor Adams and Mayor’s Office of Food Policy (MOFP) Executive Director Kate MacKenzie also announced that the city will reduce absolute carbon emissions from food purchases across its city agencies by 33 percent by 2030.
Greenfield hits the nail on the head.
Just wait until they do an inventory of carbon emissions based on population and announce that they’re cutting the population by 33% by 2030. If you don’t think it’s coming, look to the history of the Left.
“New York City is leading the world when it comes to combating climate change, because we’re using every option on the menu in our fight — and that includes changing our menus, too,” said Mayor Adams. “This new emissions report shows us that plant-powered food isn’t just good for our physical and mental health, but good for the planet as well. We’ve already made great strides in reducing our food emissions by leading with plant-based meals in our public hospitals and introducing Plant-Powered Fridays in our public schools. Now, we know we need to go further. That’s why today, we’re committing to reducing the city’s food-based emissions at agencies by 33 percent by 2030 and challenging our private sector partners to join us by cutting their food emissions by 25 percent in the same time period.”

These people are seriously deranged. Here in the U.K. the government is phasing out natural gas boilers for home heating and making everyone pay for expensive heat pumps that don’t work.
The production of manmade CO2 for home heating in the U.K. amounts to 0.00000204% of the earth’s atmosphere. From there, we have to go to Net Zero. Prof. Lindzen had it right when he described these people and their plans as “absurd”.

The question that I would like to ask is how much food is grown and produced within the boundaries of New York City .
I would expect the answer would be a very very small amount .
How can any city become anywhere near carbon ” Neutral.” when all their food is imported from around the country or overseas.
My opinion is that for any city attempting to go? carbon neutral ,that their council is mentally challenged.
It is an impossibility but with the straight out stupid accounting system put in place at the Paris Agreement on Climate Change ,city corporations might claim that they are carbon neutral .
Why are the CO2 and CH4 emissions allocated to the country or state where the food is grown and produced instead of counting as emissions where the food is eaten?
Oil,gas and coal are all exported and the emissions are billed to the country where the fuel is used .

You are describing what is called “locavorism,” eating only food produced within 100 miles of you. The sustainist nut jobs in higher education embrace this. When they have conferences, they proudly say the food served was “locally sourced” and apologize for anything brought great distances. This is all based on the erroneous concept of “food miles” (i.e., transporting food is bad for the planet and unsustainable).
Of course, a locavore is limited in variety and season. If NYC wanted to go locavore, I once ran the food production calculations for a 100 mile radius of New York City. The entire city would starve within one to two months.
New Yorkers would be forced to hunt for the abundant Rattus norvegicus as well as the Common Blattodea who, fortunately for the city dwellers, number in the billions within the confines of Manhattan.

Hey, there is a lot of great vegetarian food in New York City: penne alla vodka, linguini marinara, fettuccine alfredo, angel hair aglio olio ……
I believe (having read a few biographies of him) that he turned to vegetarianism due to IBS and other digestive problems- yet, those problems remained with him for life despite that diet. I suspect it was the massive stress that caused those problems- not meat, eggs, etc. I used to have more stress and tried vegetarianism- didn’t help. I now eat a lot of meat, eggs, cheese, etc. and have little of those problems- maybe one day/year. Not only is vegetarianism not healthier for you – it’s not going to help “save the planet”. A balanced diet is best for most people- and a balance of different energy sources is good for the economy and the planet.
If they have it their way, in a couple of decades or less there won’t be any children.

Clearly he has no clue that earth must be tilled, crops planted and then harvested, most all done these days by diesel powered machinery. Also, growing plants to eat takes up land, an not just any land. The land has to be suitable tor growing whatever crop one desires to grow. Corn won’t grow on a rocky mountainside, but goats can graze in places like that.
Also read somewhere else that mayor Adams is diabetic. Any diabetic with a brain should know that there are certain veggies and fruits that you want to avoid, like white potatoes, corn, bananas, pineapple, other sugary fruit, etc. Not to mention breads and pastas that are full of starch and spike blood sugar.
I don’t know where people these days get the idea that just because a foodstuff is from a plant (as opposed to an animal, or perhaps fungi) it is automatically healthy. They’re already well on the way to that target: “Sixty-eight percent of registered voters in the city are Democrats.”. The other 32% are already moving away in droves.
