A victory for common sense!
Michael Gove has approved the first new UK coal mine in 30 years despite concern about its climate impacts among Conservative MPs and experts.
The proposed mine in Cumbria would dig up coking coal for steel production in the UK and across the world.
Critics say the mine would undermine climate targets and demand for coking coal is declining.
But supporters claim the mine, near Whitehaven, will create jobs and reduce the need to import coal.
The fate of the West Cumbria Mining project had been hanging in the balance for two years after the local county council initially approved the mine in 2020.
The project’s approval was suspended in early 2021, ahead of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, after the government’s climate change adviser said it would increase carbon emissions.
The government’s advisory Climate Change Committee (UKCCC) pointed out that 85% of the coal produced by the mine would be exported.
Lord Deben, chairman of the CCC, described the proposal as “absolutely indefensible” and said its approval would damage the UK’s leadership on climate change.

I still don’t understand why tiny extremists groups such as FOE should get any airtime at all on the BBC.
Amongst the arguments against is that there will be little demand coking coal by the 2030s. I’m not sure what this has to do with the likes of Greenpeace, as it is a purely commercial matter for the company to weigh up.
Deben seems to think there is something wrong with exporting coal, but he is evidently happy that Russia exports coal to us, which inevitably leads to greater emissions, something he claims to care about.
And there is the usual nonsense about creating green jobs for the poor saps in Whitehaven who are desperate for well paid jobs at the mine. As we are finding to our cost, these green jobs are just a mirage.
I gather there is still a possibility of another legal challenge, which is the last thing Whitehaven needs. But hopefully we can now get on with a project which will be good for Cumbria and the country.

If “the government’s climate change advisor” says that backing out imported coal, especially from less-environmentally conscience producers, will “increase carbon emissions”, they need to rethink that absurd idea.
In today’s Daily Telegraph a formally right leaning newspaper, their Economics advisor and journalist(sic) Ambrose Pritchard Evans weighs in with an article denying the need for the new coal mine. His logic is we should not do it because we can import the coal cheaper.
It is that kind of convenient lunacy that has led to Europe being in a domestic fuel crisis. It’s AEP’s logic i.e. gas is cheap from Russia, so shut down all those coal plants and don’t extract your own domestic supplies and for good measure shut down all those CO2 zero nuclear power stations too.
I do not know what passes for rational economic thinking these days, but one look at the devastation in Ukraine should help to reset the minds of people like Ambrose Pritchard Evans.

If the UK does not wake up from this self-induced nightmare shortly, its Brexit troubles will seem like kindergarden games. It’s time for a proper look at the economics of climate mitigation, decent cost benefit analysis of current policies, and a less rushed more managed approach to any climate issues that are actually affecting the country. Forget the supposed global issues- there is no empirical evidence for dangerous climate change now or in the past, except for the Ice Ages which we cannot control anyway. Have some faith in human technology to see us through whatever changes happen in the future that we can’t currently predict or forecast accurately. To deindustrialize is to commit economic suicide, why do these politicians want that? Do they really represent what the people want? I doubt it.

I have visited Carlisle and traveled there to stay with my wife’s relations twice in the last 22 years .
I saw no sign of a desert when we traveled around the Lake District .
I met some farmers and visited them on their farms

If phosphate is not applied clover disappears which results in less grass growth so far less sheep can be grazed .
Farmers learnt that 100 years ago in New Zealand and Peta has still not caught on .
You have to replace nutrients as they are removed when sheep and wool is sold off a farm .
Rabbits do far more harm as they multiply so fast and eat every thing that they can reach .

I should know as I was farming sheep and cattle from 1972 untill 2001.
The scheme was called SMP which stands for Supplementary Minimum Prices.
If overseas prices on lamb mutton and beef fell below these minimum prices the government made up the difference with a subsidy .
There were also low interest loans and incentives to develop farm land.

I wrote something like “This esteemed group of individuals are factually and ethically challenged and have negative intellect and integrity”, or words to that effect.

Well, those “concerned Conservative MPs” are just displaying their appalling ignorance of technical matters, and their unwillingness to investigate a matter about which they obviuosly know very little!

Even notable sceptics here on WUWT have bought into the same anti-mining propaganda from the same NGOs who have been attacking this remarkable industry since the 1960s when the world was just beginning to think about enviromental issues.
I have been trying to convince the likes of Paul Driessen (CFACT), Ronald Stein (Heartland), Paul Homewood (notalotofpeopleknowthat) and other seemingly smart, knowledgeable climate sceptic stalwarts, that they have uncritically bought into the Dark Side NGO anti-mining meme. These are the very same activists using the same deceitful methods to promote the false “Climate Crises”.
Com’on you guys. It makes it easy to lampoon the woeful idea of grid lithium battery storage to patch up inadequate renewables, but it is dishonest (tiny kernels of truth that bolster another Big Lie) and takes away from the laudable fight against the climate scam.

It depends on where the mines are, doesn’t it? Mines in western nations are much, much more environmentally friendly than mines in Asia and Africa.
Canada’s mining environmental regulations have been adopted by the UN as the template. Since it is also Canadian Law that any Canadian company developing mines outside the country must adhere to Canada’s environmental and occupational health and safety regulations.
Australia, South Africa and Canada developed regulations regarding details that must be in a bankable feasibility study in order to raise capital for development (environmental factors and transparency are paramount). Regulations even provide the chapter titles that must be in the reports!! If you leave any blank, you must give a satisfactory explanation! Google NI 43-101.
Virtually every stock exchange and substantial bank has adopted this scheme. Lenders hire their own mining engineering consultants to review projects for them. The World bank uses the same scheme. China has even come around over the last decade adopting the same scheme.
If that ain’t enough, ponder this factoid: 20yrs ago Canadian companies managed over 70% of the global mining exploration budget and Australia ~20%. Canadians were developing Angola’s first diamond pipe discovery in the midst of a civil war! They were mining a major gold deposit in Russia’s Far East and another in Mongolia. They reopened a deposit in Romania that had been mined by the Roman’s 2000yrs ago ….. I’ve worked and consulted in Nigeria, Benin, Togo, DR Congo, Tanzania, Brazil, Nevada, USA, Potugal, Sweden all over Canada… Yeah, mining used up a lot of my time!
This is brilliant news, I didn’t think the government would have the bottle to approve this, but there’s still time for them to do one of their now ubiquitous U-turns.
Who know, perhaps they will see the light and turn again on their fracking decision. After all if they changed their minds on this mine and onshore windmills there’s hope yet for a reverse ferret on fracking.
