Cumbria Coal Mine Gets Go-Ahead

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

A victory for common sense!

Michael Gove has approved the first new UK coal mine in 30 years despite concern about its climate impacts among Conservative MPs and experts.

The proposed mine in Cumbria would dig up coking coal for steel production in the UK and across the world.

Critics say the mine would undermine climate targets and demand for coking coal is declining.

But supporters claim the mine, near Whitehaven, will create jobs and reduce the need to import coal.

The fate of the West Cumbria Mining project had been hanging in the balance for two years after the local county council initially approved the mine in 2020.

The project’s approval was suspended in early 2021, ahead of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, after the government’s climate change adviser said it would increase carbon emissions.

The government’s advisory Climate Change Committee (UKCCC) pointed out that 85% of the coal produced by the mine would be exported.

Lord Deben, chairman of the CCC, described the proposal as “absolutely indefensible” and said its approval would damage the UK’s leadership on climate change.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63892381

While this is a much less biased piece than the series of outright anti-mine propaganda articles written by Harrabin last year, it is still woefully one sided.

Although short pro-mine comments are published from West Cumbria Mining, the local council and Northern Tories, the vast majority of the article is devoted to anti-mine ones from:

Lord Deben

Friends of the Earth

“Steel experts”

Ed Miliband

Green Party

“Senior Tories, such as Sharma and Kwarteng

Labour Party

South Lakes Action on Climate Change

I still don’t understand why tiny extremists groups such as FOE should get any airtime at all on the BBC.

Amongst the arguments against is that there will be little demand coking coal by the 2030s. I’m not sure what this has to do with the likes of Greenpeace, as it is a purely commercial matter for the company to weigh up.

Deben seems to think there is something wrong with exporting coal, but he is evidently happy that Russia exports coal to us, which inevitably leads to greater emissions, something he claims to care about.

And there is the usual nonsense about creating green jobs for the poor saps in Whitehaven who are desperate for well paid jobs at the mine. As we are finding to our cost, these green jobs are just a mirage.

I gather there is still a possibility of another legal challenge, which is the last thing Whitehaven needs. But hopefully we can now get on with a project which will be good for Cumbria and the country.

By the way, I really have to comment on this ludicrous piece in the pathetic Independent:

https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/cumbria-coal-mine-decision-steel-environment-brexit-b2240025.html

If they think that is “Backwards Britain”, what on earth do they call dismantling a wind farm to dig for coal in their beloved EU?

Lord Deben calls the decision absolutely indefensible. This is the man with gigantic conflicts of interest. I regard his position in the Climate Change Committee as absolutely indefensible.

Great news for the Solway and the North Lakes, and for the port of Workington which is where I joined my first ship, an iron ore carrier, as a Cadet, in 1959. At that time Workington imported iron ore and used local coal to make the best quality steel railway lines in the world, and when they poured steel during the night you could see the glow from all along the Scottish south coast.

Seconded, Oldseadog. I haven’t been to Whitehaven for many years since the 1980’s but I recall thinking Cleator Moor as one of the most depressing and economically deprived places in semi-rural England.

For such a small country there are still many places that are underpopulated, IMO.
You could take Hong Kong and drop it near Carlisle and no one in London would ever notice.

An all encompassing excuse to ban anything.

I would remind said adviser that he is himself a carbon emitter just by breathing as are new additions to the human race.

Where will such an anti-humanist agenda based on idiot science lead us.

In today’s Daily Telegraph a formally right leaning newspaper, their Economics advisor and journalist(sic) Ambrose Pritchard Evans weighs in with an article denying the need for the new coal mine. His logic is we should not do it because we can import the coal cheaper.
It is that kind of convenient lunacy that has led to Europe being in a domestic fuel crisis. It’s AEP’s logic i.e. gas is cheap from Russia, so shut down all those coal plants and don’t extract your own domestic supplies and for good measure shut down all those CO2 zero nuclear power stations too.
I do not know what passes for rational economic thinking these days, but one look at the devastation in Ukraine should help to reset the minds of people like Ambrose Pritchard Evans.

Which seems almost measured judging by the reaction in the ‘Daily Climate Crisis’ (Grauniad)

New Cumbria coalmine ‘like opening a Betamax factory

Have no doubt: opening a coalmine in Cumbria is a climate crime against humanity
Could Cumbria coalmine be stopped despite government green light?

And from the former party of the working man:

Ed Miliband vows party will seek to prevent ‘climate-destroying’ plan and if elected would deliver green jobs

I recently entertained the idea that we might get fracking going until the globalists ousted the PM. I should have known better. Consequently, I’m not considering this mine anything like a done deal. Sunak is an accomplished U turn artist.

These climate alarmist fools are all deluded by their own virtue signaling, driving blindfold into the unknown future of net Zero nonsense. The less they know of the science the more certain they are of the right track to take us to climate utopia. Very sad really, that all our leaders are so lacking in basic knowledge about the relationship between energy costs and general prosperity for society. The basic need for reliable fossil fuel and nuclear energy for modern industrialization and our relatively pleasant lifestyles should be obvious to all.
Why are we throwing away all the benefits of the modern world over this climate crap?
Can anyone honestly say they have experienced any alarming climate episode in their lives that can be related to modern gentle warming? Don’t you realize the benefits of warming and CO2 rise for plants and crops? Where is the supposed crisis happening anyway, who has been actually affected by sea level rise?

If the UK does not wake up from this self-induced nightmare shortly, its Brexit troubles will seem like kindergarden games. It’s time for a proper look at the economics of climate mitigation, decent cost benefit analysis of current policies, and a less rushed more managed approach to any climate issues that are actually affecting the country. Forget the supposed global issues- there is no empirical evidence for dangerous climate change now or in the past, except for the Ice Ages which we cannot control anyway. Have some faith in human technology to see us through whatever changes happen in the future that we can’t currently predict or forecast accurately. To deindustrialize is to commit economic suicide, why do these politicians want that? Do they really represent what the people want? I doubt it.

Gove recognised the education ‘blob’ when education minister but spectacularly failed to see the much more substantial and far-reaching green blob when he moved on to be environment minster. So I’m a bit surprised at this decision. They will have to move fast – if the eco-loons manage to delay things then it’ll be odds on that the Labour morons who are likely to take over from the Tory morons in government two years hence will shut it down. Eco-lunacy runs deep in our established political class.

Great news – the green blob bed wetters are up in arms, so it’s a win for common sense, national security and British industry

Although this Mine will access coking coal for steel production, the wider energy message is clear and concise – fossil fuels are natures fuels and should be used on our transition to a nuclear future

Re: The picture.
Yes, a beautiful landscape but the natives are a little more pragmatic
Classically asserting that: Yes it’s a lovely view but, the view doesn’t pay the rent

Others are even more pragmatic and hence why you’ll find Lake District hotels that are even pricier than London hotels. And that is saying something.

The picture is however missing the Climate Change Aspect
(btw: What is that yellow patch; please don’t say its caused by Roundup)

The missing bit is what appear, from a distance, to be maggots (Blowfly larvae/grubs) crawling all over the hillsides
i.e. White things with black heads which, up close, are = Sheep

And sheep have turned the Lake District into an effective desert.

A quite surreal/bizarre sort of desert..
it’s not roasting hot
it’s not bone-dry
it’s not made of sand
people like to visit it and some even live there

But it is a desert, the true definition of which of which is, and NOT a list of things that happen there, is that it is a place of low soil organic content

And overgrazing by sheep did that
In case of doubt, ask the citizens of the City of Carlisle about flash flooding – Carlisle being where a bridge was placed across one of the main drains coming out of the Lake District

Carlisle translating as:
Car(r): a swampy place with a few number of trees trying to take hold
Isle: island
Thus, it maybe wasn’t the very best of ideas to build a city on an island in a swamp and then, block the river running through the swamp with humongous piers supporting a bridge.

But they got away with it for a while, until sheep turned the river’s (The Eden) watershed into desert – hence the now commonplace flash flooding

I’m guessing the mountain is an artist’s rendition of Blencathra, sometimes visible ~27 miles to the SW of my old ‘desert in the making

I was a Modern Farmer and did what I was told/taught – I used Ammonium Nitrate to make my desert.

sigh. You do learn some crazy stuff when you delve into Climate Science, some things you maybe come to regret.

You are spouting rubbish Peta.
I have visited Carlisle and traveled there to stay with my wife’s relations twice in the last 22 years .
I saw no sign of a desert when we traveled around the Lake District .
I met some farmers and visited them on their farms
Your attack on sheep is incomprehensible and you are making up a lot of bullshi!
We used to have 70 million sheep in New Zealand but now only half that number .
That is not because they turned the land into a desert .
A lot of sheep farms have turned to dairying and cereal cropping and there has been a lot of forestry planted for timber on poorer land .
Most farmers look after their land and do not overgraze but they do apply super phosphate and lime mainly by air on to our hill country .
If phosphate is not applied clover disappears which results in less grass growth so far less sheep can be grazed .
Farmers learnt that 100 years ago in New Zealand and Peta has still not caught on .
You have to replace nutrients as they are removed when sheep and wool is sold off a farm .
Rabbits do far more harm as they multiply so fast and eat every thing that they can reach .
Peta you are obviously an organic grower but 8 billion people on this planet cannot be fed with organic systems .

Government subsidies made the ‘reported’ stock numbers very high ( 70 mill) , as it was paid per capita. Many say there were ‘phantom sheep’ as its the framers counting them. Soon as the subsidy was withdrawn (1985) the numbers dropped immediately. The longer term decline since was because of the factors you describe
The US by contrast has 5 mill sheep, also subsidised

I was farming bulls at this time and most of them were smarter than Duker .
I don’t know were you got that story from but it is incorrect .
THE GOVERNMENT NEVER PAID A SUBSIDY ON THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS ON EACH FARM .
I should know as I was farming sheep and cattle from 1972 untill 2001.
The scheme was called SMP which stands for Supplementary Minimum Prices.
If overseas prices on lamb mutton and beef fell below these minimum prices the government made up the difference with a subsidy .
There were also low interest loans and incentives to develop farm land.

Reply to  Graham
December 9, 2022 7:03 pm

Facts dont agree with you my friend about the early 1980s

In 1984 nearly 40% of the gross income of New Zealand sheep and beef farmers came from government subsidies. Our farmers were receiving so much assistance that overseas competitors were talking about taking action against our exports. A year later all of these subsidies were gone.

and

When supplementary minimum prices were introduced, every lamb fetched a price underwritten by the Government, regardless of real demand for the product.

It was a useful lesson in human nature. Farmers were farming phantom sheep. An additional 10 million sheep were found until SMPs were abolished, when they disappeared just as magically. It was also a lesson in conserving resources, and how free markets, property rights and conservation go together.

If you believe every thing that you read in the paper or on the internet ,well there is one born every minute .
David Seymour made up the story of phantom sheep .
The government NEVER paid a subsidy on sheep or cattle on farms .
The subsidy was paid at the slaughter house ( meat works )and it was called the Supplementary Minimum Price .
The government topped up the price as Britain our main market for lamb joined the EU which immediately imposed tariffs on sheep meats to protect European farmers from exports .
I farmed right through this period so I know all about European protectionism and why our government introduced SMP to cushion the blow of the restrictions that were imposed on our lamb exports .
David Seymour was still at school .
SMP also applied to dairy exports but very little was paid out to dairy farmers .

Where are the climate scientists other than may be a marine biologist?

Apologies… My previous post must have contained a banned word.

I wrote something like “This esteemed group of individuals are factually and ethically challenged and have negative intellect and integrity”, or words to that effect.

I would also mention Germany paying south africa 800mil euros last year as danegeld to not use coal, and now importing millions of tons of coal, from south africa.

Well, those “concerned Conservative MPs” are just displaying their appalling ignorance of technical matters, and their unwillingness to investigate a matter about which they obviuosly know very little!

“While this is a much less biased piece than the series of outright anti-mine propaganda articles written by Harrabin last year, it is still woefully one sided.”

Even notable sceptics here on WUWT have bought into the same anti-mining propaganda from the same NGOs who have been attacking this remarkable industry since the 1960s when the world was just beginning to think about enviromental issues.

I have been trying to convince the likes of Paul Driessen (CFACT), Ronald Stein (Heartland), Paul Homewood (notalotofpeopleknowthat) and other seemingly smart, knowledgeable climate sceptic stalwarts, that they have uncritically bought into the Dark Side NGO anti-mining meme. These are the very same activists using the same deceitful methods to promote the false “Climate Crises”.

Com’on you guys. It makes it easy to lampoon the woeful idea of grid lithium battery storage to patch up inadequate renewables, but it is dishonest (tiny kernels of truth that bolster another Big Lie) and takes away from the laudable fight against the climate scam.

Here’s some reading I strongly recommend to get you started:

It depends on where the mines are, doesn’t it? Mines in western nations are much, much more environmentally friendly than mines in Asia and Africa.

Canada’s mining environmental regulations have been adopted by the UN as the template. Since it is also Canadian Law that any Canadian company developing mines outside the country must adhere to Canada’s environmental and occupational health and safety regulations.

Australia, South Africa and Canada developed regulations regarding details that must be in a bankable feasibility study in order to raise capital for development (environmental factors and transparency are paramount). Regulations even provide the chapter titles that must be in the reports!! If you leave any blank, you must give a satisfactory explanation! Google NI 43-101.

Virtually every stock exchange and substantial bank has adopted this scheme. Lenders hire their own mining engineering consultants to review projects for them. The World bank uses the same scheme. China has even come around over the last decade adopting the same scheme.

If that ain’t enough, ponder this factoid: 20yrs ago Canadian companies managed over 70% of the global mining exploration budget and Australia ~20%. Canadians were developing Angola’s first diamond pipe discovery in the midst of a civil war! They were mining a major gold deposit in Russia’s Far East and another in Mongolia. They reopened a deposit in Romania that had been mined by the Roman’s 2000yrs ago ….. I’ve worked and consulted in Nigeria, Benin, Togo, DR Congo, Tanzania, Brazil, Nevada, USA, Potugal, Sweden all over Canada… Yeah, mining used up a lot of my time!

This is brilliant news, I didn’t think the government would have the bottle to approve this, but there’s still time for them to do one of their now ubiquitous U-turns.
Who know, perhaps they will see the light and turn again on their fracking decision. After all if they changed their minds on this mine and onshore windmills there’s hope yet for a reverse ferret on fracking.
