Announcing: The First WUWT Climate Change Essay Contest

That’s right, we are having an essay contest, and there will be cash prizes for the winners. But I’ll need your help.  As many of you know, over the past two years Google has slowly squeezed out most of our ad revenue.  So, before we officially announce our essay contest, we need to first raise the funds so we can offer meaningful cash prizes.  That means folks like you need to help.  Please go to our donation page and contribute as much as you can.

Despite the frequent accusations from climate alarmists and journalists, we never receive a dime from the fossil fuel industry, and Google has made certain that our ad revenue fails to cover the cost of publishing WUWT.  In fact, now they have doubled down, and announced they are going to cut off any website that publishes any doubt about catastrophic man-made global warming. See this story: Google, YouTube to prohibit ads and monetization on climate denial content

We believe the upcoming essay contest will help to engage a younger set of climate realists and gain more coverage for a rational view of climate change.  So, let me thank you in advance for your help.  Please donate now.

Here is the contest in a nutshell, which we plan to officially announce November 1st.

Topic: Is there really a climate crisis?

Write the best arguments against the theory of man-made catastrophic global warming that would convince your neighbors that there is no climate crisis.

Entry categories:

  • General Public: Any reader who does not fall into the two categories below
  • Professionals: Scientists, engineers, graduate students, doctoral candidates
  • Students: College undergrads, high school students, and below

Cash Prizes:

  • First prize for each of the above categories:  To be determined once we have concluded our fundraising, but hopefully over $1000
  • Second prize/runner up for each of the above categories: To be determined once we have concluded our fundraising.

Contest Rules Summary:

  • Open to everyone, see categories.
  • Essays must question the validity of the theory of man-made catastrophic global warming.
  • All entries must be submitted electronically.
  • 1500 words or less, not including citations.
  • Graphics and tables are welcome.
  • Citations are encouraged.
  • Winners can remain anonymous, but must be verified by WUWT staff.
  • Winning essays will be announced and published January 10th, 2022

All winning essays, judged by a panel of climate experts and journalists, will be published here, some non-winning essays may also be published.

A nationwide press-release will also be made to media outlets announcing the winning essays and their authors, if they choose not to be anonymous. I expect these essays and the winners will be picked up by many media outlets.

We will officially open the contest to entries on Monday, November 1st by announcing the contest page. At that time, the final official rules and format requirements will be published.

In the meantime, we encourage all WUWT readers to pitch in with funding for the cash prizes.

Just click on the big “Donate” button on the right sidebar.  Or, this link.  It is critical that we help the world to understand that the sky is not falling.

It is critical that we help the world to understand that an in-depth understanding of climate science fails to support the theory of catastrophic man-made global warming aka the “climate crisis”.

Thanks for your help, it is vitally important.

Anthony Watts

I had to install AdGuard since FF and Edge were killing my 6-cpu PC. I can leave sites through, but WOW, WSJ and all MSM have a real hissy fit when they detect. I don’t even get to the Paywall!

Even works on android, no idea what FaceBook would do..

And to think of the $89 TRILLION that Davos and Mark Carney want to flush through the worlds’ central banks!
There are some clowns who still see BlackRock as a fossil fuel hedge fund, and miss that $89 TRILLION gorilla under the carpet.

What is derailing this insane green lurch to Climate Church is the hyperinflation hitting true believer’s (who dismiss science) right now. Davos does not have much time – the Great Reset looks like the Great Whimper!

In times like this profound questions begin to grip former believers, and Davos et al, fear that most of all. Then profound answers, such as massive development crash programs become the only game in town….

Web advertisers are no doubt already noticing that the value of their ads is withering since their audience on Google censor-approved sites is shrinking by the day.

“…fails to support the theory of catastrophic man-made global warming aka the “climate crisis””.
≠===========
Anthony, only 25% of the population respond to analytical arguments such as you have outlined. The other 75% respond to emotional arguments. That is why the polar bear is so successful as an icon for climate change.

Climate crisis is an emotional trigger, not an analytical argument. The climate discussion has moved on.

It matters not one wit that the theory doesn’t support AGW. What matters is the reaction driven by what people believe.

Spot on!

Thinking rationally is far, far more taxing than just rolling with how you “feel” about something.

Marketers have known this for centuries.

“Free” is one of the most emotive strings that pull acceptance / buying actions.

Smarter buyers investigate how anything can be offered for free by an organization that has fixed costs.

Isn’t that the basis of an essay. You could argue the question is no longer meaningful. I think it is close to fact. The next phase will be to see how it unravels as the weather gets colder and random energy extraction is recognised as a humungous waste of resources. Look at the Afghan war. It was being won for two decades then lost in two weeks! People dying of cold across the northern continents in a few months could change a lot of minds about fossil fuels.

Many years ago I was in a school debate for the affirmative on the proposition –
The USA is dying!

The negative side argued the USA was dead. The strategy was something we had not contemplated and our argument had to change midstream from dying to something like – being still alive but on life support.

Watch as the Woke respond to their portmonae, their wallet, which is all they actually believe in.
Hyperinflation hits the wallet, hard.

Time for profound questions about nature and economy, as the wallet empties….

First things first: As serious blackouts rise, a governmental committee in London (that boris doesn’t listen yet) says for many months: Only with PERMANENT INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION will the electricity networks operate without local and global blackouts. https://nationalpreparednesscommission.uk/2021/07/national-resilience-preparing-for-future-challenges/

While you can “cooperate” as much as you like, if your ultimate source of power is sunshine and breezes, you’re basically screwed.

Prepare ye the Way of the Cold!!!

Okay, I did see “Godspell” too many times at the theater (much more fun than a movie), but if you were there….. 🙂

Can I do something with my photos that shows how important WARMTH is to plants and insects, especially since we depend on both organisms to do things that provide us with food?

The critical thing is to test essays out on some brainwashed zombies. The key will be to induce these slaves to emotion to ask questions. People have to wake themselves up by asking questions. It is our Duty to lead the sheeple to ask the questions that will set them free from their brainwashing.

The ability to question makes us human. The right to question makes us free. This shall be my opening line. As it is directed to scientifically ignorant people, I will try to tap in to emotions (bit of a challenge since I am a bit of a hard nosed non emotional, non conformist type) and induce the readers to come to their own conclusions. Enlightenment can ONLY come from within.

Remember, we are writing to convince those who think differently to ourselves. The target audience is emotional and not logical.

Still no mention of the nobel prize in physics on WUWT? A nobel prize for climate models that have been 100% wrong in their predictions. It deserves a comment I think.

The increase in type 2 diabetes is the ultimate argument. If we had a climate crisis we would have a crop crisis. We dont, obviously.

If we had a climate crisis we would have a crop crisis.”

True. In fact it is the opposite. Record crops year upon year.

Lukewarmists give alarmists the credibility they don’t deserve.

WUWT seems to have more than its (dave) fair share of lukewarmists.

When are lukewarmists going to challenge the claimed catastrophic effects of the GHE or the ridiculous ECS claims which are based on groupthink and cargo cult science by the media and alarmist websites and publications instead of agreeing with them to a point?

Meanwhile, BBC One will screen a film drama, The Trick, on October 18, based on Climategate 2009 where Phil Jones et al at the CRU UEA are shown to be hacked by climate change deniers to discredit the settled science of AGW.

With time running out against an unseen enemy, The Trick looks at the potentially devastating consequences to humanity from climate change denial; how a media storm undermined public confidence in the science and how the concept of ‘truth’ took a back seat causing us to lose a decade of action. The film also charts the unjustified persecution of Phil Jones, his wife Ruth’s fierce support of her husband and the fight for the ultimate exoneration of himself and the science.”

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2021/the-trick

I seem to remember it differently.

Don’t know about you but I would be very wary about supporting the roll of the GHE in the settled science when the only difference between warmists and lukewarmists is “How Much?”.

Maybe WUWT needs a new direction?

I made WUWT aware of the screening of The Trick a few days ago but no response so far from them even though I supplied my email address. Maybe WUWT considers making heroes out of the CRU UEA crooks an OK thing or maybe I made too many complaints about Willis and his back radiation bullshit

We are going to get about 90 minutes of how Phil Jones and his wife et al were persecuted and destroyed by climate deniers hacking their emails intent on discrediting the science of man-made climate change.

And all on the National Broadcaster of the United Kingdom, BBC One, for 67M people and 150M worldwide in English and 27 other languages worldwide.

Just before COP26, too.

Oh, well, I tried.

WUWT should be hammering down on this sort of rubbish if it is seriously opposed to disinformation on AGW.

Obviously it’s not.
