Michael Mann: Russian Web Bots are Causing Climate Activists to Fight Each Other

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to Michael Mann, the main obstacle to climate action is a coalition of Russian robots, Saudis, fossil fuel tycoons, Rupert Murdoch, Wikileaks and climate deniers.

Climatologist Michael E Mann: ‘Good people fall victim to doomism. I do too sometimes’

The author and eminent climate scientist on the deniers’ new tactics and why positive change feels closer than it has done in 20 years

Who is the enemy in the new climate war?
It is fossil fuel interests, climate change deniers, conservative media tycoons, working together with petrostate actors like Saudi Arabia and Russia. I call this the coalition of the unwilling.

If you had to find a single face that represents both the old and new climate war it would be Rupert Murdoch. Climate change is an issue the Murdoch press has disassembled on for years. The disinformation was obvious last year, when they blamed arsonists for the devastating Australian bushfires. This was a horrible attempt to divert attention from the real cause, which was climate change. Murdoch was taken to task by his own son because of the immorality of his practices.

We also have to recognise the increasing roles of petrostate actors. Saudi Arabia has played an obstructionist role. Russia has perfected cyber warfare and used it to interfere in other countries and disrupt action on climate change. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has made a credible case about Russia’s efforts to hijack the 2016 presidential election and get Trump elected. Russia wanted to end US sanctions that stood in the way of a half-trillion-dollar deal between Rosneft and ExxonMobil. It worked. Who did Trump appoint as his first secretary of state? Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil.

Today Russia uses cyberware – bot armies and trolls – to get climate activists to fight one another and to seed arguments on social media. Russian trolls have attempted to undermine carbon pricing in Canada and Australia, and Russian fingerprints have been detected in the yellow-vest protests in France.Advertisement

And WikiLeaks? Your book suggests they were involved?
I’m not an expert but there has been a lot of investigative journalism about the role they played in the 2016 election. Julian Assange and WikiLeaks helped Donald Trump get elected, and in doing that they did the bidding of Putin. Their fingerprints are also all over the climategate affair 10 years ago. UK investigators have evidence of Russian involvement in that too.

I’ve got news for you Mann, climate activists don’t need our help to fall out with each other. Just look at the fight between Michael Moore and the rest of the climate community over his anti-renewable energy eco-epic “Planet of the Humans”. Or that hilarious time Naomi Oreskes called James Hansen a “denier”, because of a disagreement over nuclear power.

Of course it helps that Michael Moore is part of the climate denier conspiracy. Moore’s “Planet of the Humans” insider attack against renewable energy and the climate establishment was a maskirovka master stroke.

The truth is the previous paragraph is a joke, Michael Moore is not an agent of fossil fuel interests, as far as I know. But do climate activists trust me to tell the truth? Maybe some of them will think I’m mocking climate activists by parading a snippet of the truth, then laughing about it, expecting nobody to believe my reveal.

What do you think, Michael Mann?

“an issue the Murdoch press has disassembled on for years”. They disassembled climate change? A remarkable achievement. 😉

And fancy blaming arsonists for lighting fires. Climate change did that all by itself. :0

Mann himself is ‘disassembling’, at the link it is clear that The Australian editorial (at a further link) mentions a number of contributory factors including “… the strong positive Indian Ocean Dipole effect and a rare Sudden Stratospheric Warming event …”.

Belief in climate doom is more important than its prevention. Oreskes called Hansen a denier for advocating nuclear energy, and Mann stands with Oreskes. No doubt Hansen is in the pocket of nuclear energy and Oreskes is in the pocket of Big Oil, or the Russians, or whatever. –AGF

Which is stranger? That Mickey Mann thinks that Russian bots and trolls are out to get him and his ilk; or that the Grauniad actually printed his paranoid diatribe?
You could tell from his lawsuits that this guy had a deep streak of persecuting paranoia inside; now it looks like the thought pathogens are spreading throughout his brain, making him spout weirder and weirder stuff as his hallucinations intensify!
So he thinks President Trump deregulating the energy industry, lowering prices and creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs for American workers was to help Putin!? Oh, Mann! This poor guy needs an intervention before he goes completely off the deep end! Next he’ll be talking about aliens or little green men messing with his research. How pathetic!

What can one say about Mikey Mann that doesn’t include a whole string of expletives? The only word that comes to mind is pathetic … then comes hubris, cherubic (but not in a nice way), fatuous, asinine, foolish, silly, and puerile. Even from the beginning his limited notoriety went to his head and “little man syndrome” took over. History will not be kind to him.

His one claim to fame in science was being the father to a scientific fraud … even more damning than The Piltdown Man.

But you DENY that fact , just like you DENY all other FACTS.

There is no “climate science™” to “accept”

If there was, leftist AGW cultists like you would be able to produce it.

AND YOU CAN’T !!!

All you have is mindless little fantasies.

1… Do you have any empirical scientific evidence for warming by atmospheric CO2?

2… In what ways has the global climate changed in the last 50 years , that can be scientifically proven to be of human released CO2 causation?

Strawman much? Certainly not “everyone”, there are many useful idiots.

Yet to deny that the purported solutions to CAGW universally engender greater central power, and are at the same time entirely ineffective in reducing CO2, is to be in denial of completely obvious facts.

Griff, a curious person would question why Communist China pays full lip service to the CAGW fantasy, while rapidly building coal plants at home and around the world. ( Are you a curious person?)

Most often the AGW true believers can be easily labelled as true believers (useful idiots), without the vaguest notion what is going on and don’t want the facts or the real science. The proper designation for the leaders who push the AGW agenda is ‘Globalists’, but Marxist, Leftist and socialist also serve many. In fairness, those people don’t seem to know any more about those ideologies than they do climate science.

Then there’s you … utterly confused about all of it.

The twitter bot story originates in a report from a U.S. academic who claimed a quarter of all tweets about climate originate from robot accounts. As reported in our reliably alarmist: Sci-Am, Guardian, BBC, etc. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/twitter-bots-are-a-major-source-of-climate-disinformation/

Mmmm. I try to follow many tweets about the climate and most accounts who won’t respond (in the way a person would) are NGO and news media accounts. They are all climate alarmist accounts! So it’s climate alarmists botting-out the climate misinformation.

See for yourselves. Go to twitter. Search for the word “climate”. Reply to the first 20, or so, tweets in the search. For example by refuting or asking a question casting doubt on the truth of the tweet.

It’ll predominantly be bot climate alarmists accounts who refuse to engage in a conversation.

So once again – climate alarmists have everything about the climate back-to-front. It’s almost a if this inverted reality paradigm is the only argument they have.

Eric,
The claim by Michael Mann that wildfires in California or bushfires in Australia are caused by climate change is totally untenable.
As Dr. Roy Spencer has repeatedly explained Wildfires have not worsened. Native Americans and Aboriginals used to set them on purpose for hunting.
“The biggest factor controlling the prevalence of wildfires is land management practices.
If you live in a region like the American West it is natural for woody fuel to build up (after a rainy winter season).
Unless this dry wood is cleared, it is only a matter of time before it burns, whether from a dry lightening strike, a windstorm taking down power lines, a campfire or arson.
As humans continue to build into rural areas, the risk of humans starting fires and having their homes destroyed increases.”
The Forestry Department has a graph of “US Forest Area Burned 1926- 2017”.
It is plain at a glance that 2017 ( and prior recent years)is a fifth of the height of the graph in the 1920s.
“Regarding global wildfire activity, a 2016 study by Doerr and Santin published in the
‘Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B ‘, stated:
“…many consider wildfire as an accelerating problem, with widely held perceptions both in the media and scientific papers of increasing fire occurrence, severity and resulting losses. However, important exceptions aside, the quantative evidence available does not support these perceived overall trends.
Instead global area burned spears to have overall declined over past decades, and there is increasing evidence that there is less fire in the global landscape today than centuries ago.
Regarding fire severity, limited data are available. For the Western USA, they indicate little change overall, and also that area burned at high severity has overall declined compared compared to pre- European settlement.”
(h/t “Global Warming Skepticism for Busy People” by Roy Spencer.)
A similar picture appears in Australia.
So now the readers of this thread have greater knowledge about the frequency and severity of wildfires than the distinguished Professor of Climate Change, Michael Mann.

This was a horrible attempt to divert attention from the real cause, which was climate change.”

I’ve got news for you Michael, Australia had bushfires before any AGW ever took place. Its known for them. Cause being climate change? You’re a moron.

Had you said a significant contributing factor of “cause” was anthropogenic Carbon dioxide, then I would have been on board. The whole planet has been greening and increasing the bushfire fuel load for decades. Anthropogenic CO2 is a major contributing factor for that.

But I think that arguing a greening planet is a bad thing is going to go badly for you and your cause.

I assume that Michael Mann does not have any power bills. When he wants to cook his dinner he just places it in a closed container and waits for the back-radiation from the walls of the container to cook the meal.

In the same way, he does not need any heating power in Winter. All of his rooms heat up over time due to the back-radiation from the walls to the furnishings. How does he stop it from catching fire ?

One would think that he would patent the idea and make his fortune selling self-heating containers.
