Michael Mann: Russian Web Bots are Causing Climate Activists to Fight Each Other

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to Michael Mann, the main obstacle to climate action is a coalition of Russian robots, Saudis, fossil fuel tycoons, Rupert Murdoch, Wikileaks and climate deniers.

Climatologist Michael E Mann: ‘Good people fall victim to doomism. I do too sometimes’

Jonathan Watts
Sun 28 Feb 2021 03.00 AEDT

The author and eminent climate scientist on the deniers’ new tactics and why positive change feels closer than it has done in 20 years

Who is the enemy in the new climate war?
It is fossil fuel interests, climate change deniers, conservative media tycoons, working together with petrostate actors like Saudi Arabia and Russia. I call this the coalition of the unwilling.

If you had to find a single face that represents both the old and new climate war it would be Rupert Murdoch. Climate change is an issue the Murdoch press has disassembled on for years. The disinformation was obvious last year, when they blamed arsonists for the devastating Australian bushfires. This was a horrible attempt to divert attention from the real cause, which was climate change. Murdoch was taken to task by his own son because of the immorality of his practices.

We also have to recognise the increasing roles of petrostate actors. Saudi Arabia has played an obstructionist role. Russia has perfected cyber warfare and used it to interfere in other countries and disrupt action on climate change. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has made a credible case about Russia’s efforts to hijack the 2016 presidential election and get Trump elected. Russia wanted to end US sanctions that stood in the way of a half-trillion-dollar deal between Rosneft and ExxonMobil. It worked. Who did Trump appoint as his first secretary of state? Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of ExxonMobil.

Today Russia uses cyberware – bot armies and trolls – to get climate activists to fight one another and to seed arguments on social media. Russian trolls have attempted to undermine carbon pricing in Canada and Australia, and Russian fingerprints have been detected in the yellow-vest protests in France.Advertisement

And WikiLeaks? Your book suggests they were involved?
I’m not an expert but there has been a lot of investigative journalism about the role they played in the 2016 election. Julian Assange and WikiLeaks helped Donald Trump get elected, and in doing that they did the bidding of Putin. Their fingerprints are also all over the climategate affair 10 years ago. UK investigators have evidence of Russian involvement in that too.

Read more:

I’ve got news for you Mann, climate activists don’t need our help to fall out with each other. Just look at the fight between Michael Moore and the rest of the climate community over his anti-renewable energy eco-epic “Planet of the Humans”. Or that hilarious time Naomi Oreskes called James Hansen a “denier”, because of a disagreement over nuclear power.

Of course it helps that Michael Moore is part of the climate denier conspiracy. Moore’s “Planet of the Humans” insider attack against renewable energy and the climate establishment was a maskirovka master stroke.

The truth is the previous paragraph is a joke, Michael Moore is not an agent of fossil fuel interests, as far as I know. But do climate activists trust me to tell the truth? Maybe some of them will think I’m mocking climate activists by parading a snippet of the truth, then laughing about it, expecting nobody to believe my reveal.

What do you think, Michael Mann?

I think the clown show might be reaching a new level of ridiculous just in time to get voted out if the Newsom recall happens. I think 2 years of this progressive despotism will convince anyone with a lick of horse sense that climate changes, always has, always will and adaptation is far more sensible than some theoretical attempt at mitigation which just happens to enable the biggest transfer of wealth in history. The progressives plan to crash the western world and necessitate world government. Truly woke folks see it plain as day.

In the Guardian article, Mann said this –

His delusion is that he thinks he was talking about skepticism, instead of the “settled science”

What really bothers me is not climate change , but the number of people and worse advanced nations Governments who seem to accept the insane narrative that climate change is an existential threat to mankind . Despite nothing has indicated this for at least 30-40 years since the scare started apart from natural waxing and wanings of many systems .

From the article: “MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has made a credible case about Russia’s efforts to hijack the 2016 presidential election and get Trump elected.”

Mann said this in the last few days? After Trump has been completely exonnerated of colluding with the Russians over the 2016 election? It was the Obama-Biden FBI and Justice Department that were the real people trying to hijack the 2016 election.

Obviously, Michael Mann is not very well-informed about current events. Or, I suppose he could be deliberately lying to try to make the Russians look like a likely suspect for turning alarmists against each other. If the Russians can do it to an election, then they can do it to alarmists.

Poor alarmists. They are under attack from the Russians. And Trump!

But you DENY that fact , just like you DENY all other FACTS.

There is no “climate science™” to “accept”

If there was, leftist AGW cultists like you would be able to produce it.

All you have is mindless little fantasies.

1… Do you have any empirical scientific evidence for warming by atmospheric CO2?

2… In what ways has the global climate changed in the last 50 years , that can be scientifically proven to be of human released CO2 causation?

Strawman much? Certainly not “everyone”, there are many useful idiots.

Yet to deny that the purported solutions to CAGW universally engender greater central power, and are at the same time entirely ineffective in reducing CO2, is to be in denial of completely obvious facts.

Griff, a curious person would question why Communist China pays full lip service to the CAGW fantasy, while rapidly building coal plants at home and around the world. ( Are you a curious person?)

Most often the AGW true believers can be easily labelled as true believers (useful idiots), without the vaguest notion what is going on and don’t want the facts or the real science. The proper designation for the leaders who push the AGW agenda is ‘Globalists’, but Marxist, Leftist and socialist also serve many. In fairness, those people don’t seem to know any more about those ideologies than they do climate science.

Then there’s you … utterly confused about all of it.

The twitter bot story originates in a report from a U.S. academic who claimed a quarter of all tweets about climate originate from robot accounts. As reported in our reliably alarmist: Sci-Am, Guardian, BBC, etc.

Mmmm. I try to follow many tweets about the climate and most accounts who won’t respond (in the way a person would) are NGO and news media accounts. They are all climate alarmist accounts! So it’s climate alarmists botting-out the climate misinformation.

See for yourselves. Go to twitter. Search for the word “climate”. Reply to the first 20, or so, tweets in the search. For example by refuting or asking a question casting doubt on the truth of the tweet.

It’ll predominantly be bot climate alarmists accounts who refuse to engage in a conversation.

So once again – climate alarmists have everything about the climate back-to-front. It’s almost a if this inverted reality paradigm is the only argument they have.

March 1, 2021 12:48 am

The claim by Michael Mann that wildfires in California or bushfires in Australia are caused by climate change is totally untenable.
As Dr. Roy Spencer has repeatedly explained Wildfires have not worsened. Native Americans and Aboriginals used to set them on purpose for hunting.
“The biggest factor controlling the prevalence of wildfires is land management practices.
If you live in a region like the American West it is natural for woody fuel to build up (after a rainy winter season).
Unless this dry wood is cleared, it is only a matter of time before it burns, whether from a dry lightening strike, a windstorm taking down power lines, a campfire or arson.
As humans continue to build into rural areas, the risk of humans starting fires and having their homes destroyed increases.”
The Forestry Department has a graph of “US Forest Area Burned 1926- 2017”.
It is plain at a glance that 2017 ( and prior recent years)is a fifth of the height of the graph in the 1920s.
“Regarding global wildfire activity, a 2016 study by Doerr and Santin published in the
‘Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B ‘, stated:
“…many consider wildfire as an accelerating problem, with widely held perceptions both in the media and scientific papers of increasing fire occurrence, severity and resulting losses. However, important exceptions aside, the quantative evidence available does not support these perceived overall trends.
Instead global area burned spears to have overall declined over past decades, and there is increasing evidence that there is less fire in the global landscape today than centuries ago.
Regarding fire severity, limited data are available. For the Western USA, they indicate little change overall, and also that area burned at high severity has overall declined compared compared to pre- European settlement.”
(h/t “Global Warming Skepticism for Busy People” by Roy Spencer.)
A similar picture appears in Australia.
So now the readers of this thread have greater knowledge about the frequency and severity of wildfires than the distinguished Professor of Climate Change, Michael Mann.

This was a horrible attempt to divert attention from the real cause, which was climate change.”

I’ve got news for you Michael, Australia had bushfires before any AGW ever took place. Its known for them. Cause being climate change? You’re a moron.

Had you said a significant contributing factor of “cause” was anthropogenic Carbon dioxide, then I would have been on board. The whole planet has been greening and increasing the bushfire fuel load for decades. Anthropogenic CO2 is a major contributing factor for that.

But I think that arguing a greening planet is a bad thing is going to go badly for you and your cause.

I assume that Michael Mann does not have any power bills. When he wants to cook his dinner he just places it in a closed container and waits for the back-radiation from the walls of the container to cook the meal.

In the same way, he does not need any heating power in Winter. All of his rooms heat up over time due to the back-radiation from the walls to the furnishings. How does he stop it from catching fire ?

One would think that he would patent the idea and make his fortune selling self-heating containers.

“Their fingerprints are also all over the climategate affair 10 years ago. UK investigators have evidence of Russian involvement in that too.”

As I understand it, the UK investigators came to the conclusion that an unknown, never identified, Russian mole infiltrated the UEA CRU and gathered all the data into one file called HarryReadMe.
Then, instead of walking off with the file, they signalled an outside Russian hacker (unknown, never identified) to break into the computer systems and take that file the hard way.

This is believed to be more likely than an insider gathering the data, naming the file in English words and then blowing the whistle on CRU’s malpractice.
Well, this is believed to be more likely by crackpots, anyway.

Climate scientists are fighting each other? Is that like when Gavin Schmidt went running for the green room when Roy Spencer came on set during the Stossel Show? He surrendered and cried uncle, thinking he’d make Spencer look less credible. If that’s the level of thinking undergirding climate alarmism, no wonder you need to find people to blame, Mr. Mann. (I’d call you DOCTOR, but I rather think you’re a DOCTOR in the same exact way Jill Biden is a DOCTOR). Oh, wait, I see, it was Rupert Murdoch who gave John Stossel a show, and THAT’S why he’s to blame for Gavin Schmidt running away like a scared little girl.

DOCTOR Mann, this is all reminding me of that time you brought up Trofim Lysenko’s name to try and discredit Dr. John Christy and Dr. Judith Curry during Senate testimony at which you all appeared as climate ‘experts.’ You were so stupid you didn’t see that it was YOU who was in the Trofim Lysenko chair, the favored scientist, promoted by the federal bureaucracy and the Democrats, advancing the official favored government narrative (back in Lysenko’s case, at issue was the productivity of collective farms, with you it’s the guaranteed productivity of wind mills and solar panels in preventing CAGW) using your alleged expertise to advance a very tenuous, very weak chain of scientific causality that’s favored by the many Western governments, and this debate even has you and YOUR side of the political debate starting to agitate for a Western gulag to lock up dissenters, just as Stalin did. You sir, are a nitwit. Dr. Nitwit, Dr. Fraudpants, as Mark Steyn calls you, or Dr. Lysenko II.

It’s interesting how both the interviewer and Mann take every opportunity to take the actions of the climate alarmists and attribute them to the skeptics. Examples include claims of collusion with Russia when it was actually the Democrats, specifically Hillary, who was shown to be the one(s) in collusion. Another is claiming that it was the Russians and WikiLeaks who were responsible for Climategate rather than Mann himself and his co-conspirators.
Further they make claims that the media are the enemy when the main stream media promotes the “claimed” climate crisis as their main focus. The media is their biggest ally in spreading disinformation.
Elsewhere Mann and Watts refer to skeptics as “climate change deniers” when it is actually the CAGW crowd who imply that our climate should stop changing.
Mann speaks of other spreading false information when that has been the modus operandi of the climate alarmists groups. In fact Mann is even down on Gates for not being alarmist enough by pointing out the weaknesses of the so-called renewables.
Watts and Mann go on to blame skeptics for “Doom-mongering”. It’s not skeptics who are giving us only a few years to survive or claiming disappearance of the poles, if not in 2013, then soon!
Both interviewer Watts and Mann talk about the problems of “underplaying the dangers” when they should be discussing the problems of underplaying their failures!

When Mann presents arguments that more or less manifest a “good vs. evil” and “us vs. them” mentality, it becomes patently clear to me that he has abandoned science for his activist ideology. This not how science is done. That he is still employed at Penn State and teaches there (does he still teach there?) is disturbing to think about.

I do not know if he is manifesting any psychological issues that might be helped by professional attention, but it would not surprise me at all if it is determined someday that he does. That he still is respected in the mainstream media as a news source on climate issues only serves to show how far off kilter the media is on those issues.

I guess we should be thankful that he is not a member of Biden’s climate team — at least not yet anyway.

According to Michael Mann, the main obstacle to climate action is a coalition of Russian robots, Saudis, fossil fuel tycoons, Rupert Murdoch, Wikileaks and climate deniers.

The main obstacle to “climate action” is “Mother Nature”.
She can’t read tree rings or climate models and wouldn’t care about them if “she” could.

In less figurative terms, the main obstacle to “climate action” is reality.

Face it, Mann, you’ve got it wrong.

March 1, 2021 4:05 pm

I’m a little late with this comment, perhaps few will see it; I have posted this story a couple of times here on WUWT, but I believe it is extremely pertinent and illustrative to do so again.

Many years ago, a NWS forecaster wrote an Area Forecast Discussion and included a sarcastic comment about termites (after papers appeared in the literature stating that termites were thought to be significant contributors of methane to the atmosphere, and thus large contributors to disastrous global warming). Michael Mann called that very day to complain to the supervisor that this was not a subject to be joked about, and that it had no place in AFDs, etc etc. One might reasonably ask, in what role would a university professor need to comment about the contents of a NWS AFD? What would prompt such a response from a busy climate researcher to a minor weather product which is not in his domain?

I believe society needs to put Michael Mann’s work, responses, and actions in the context of NPD: Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Now, I’m no psychiatrist or psychologist, and I would not even attempt to diagnose anyone with a potential personality disorder, but, ironically, because the above-mentioned supervisor so closely fit the NPD criteria, I became closely acquainted with those criteria. Look it up for yourself in DSM IV or V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV or V), and you will see what I mean. Among other things, a narcissist MUST be thought of by his inferiors (which is just about everybody, even a boss) as correct and superior. Any intimation that he/she is wrong will be met with swift and decisive action and potent push-back. Narcissists are CERTAIN that they are right, and everybody else is wrong. Why, the above-noted supervisor even used that very statement to the staff! “I’m right and you all are wrong.” He/she also said, “If you want to know what’s wrong with this office, just look in the mirror.” Narcissists are very clever; when in therapy, they can apparently often fool the therapist and explain away their actions. They can make it appear everybody else really IS wrong. It’s only with the passage of time and events that this disorder comes to light. Back to the termite story: Mann’s possible NPD forces him to respond to any intimation that his theory/ideas/ideology are in any way flawed, even for minor and seemingly unrelated events or situations. Narcissists seem to have a deep-seated shame for which they compensate by employing an over-arching hubris and need for control. A narcissist will project onto their enemy their own ills; they will of course lie when it can be gotten away with. I observed first-hand the desperation and flash psychopathy of the mentioned supervisor when this person lost control of him/herself when he/she could not control me, the situation, and the overall proceedings. It’s been said that the family of a narcissist suffers the most, but, in the case of a narcissist on the “Climate Emergency” stage, it appears the world is suffering, due to the sheer waste of trillions of dollars and trillions of euros.

I believe that the real problem is the science. Based on the paleoclimate record and the work done with models one can conclude that the climate change we are experiencing today is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Mankind does not even know what the optimum climate is let alone how to obtain it. So the real problem is reality.
