The ideology of white supremacy leads the way toward disposable people and a disposable natural world

During the street protests and marches of the past two weeks, many people carried signs that read “Racism Is Killing Us.” It’s no exaggeration to say that racism and white supremacy harm all of us, because in addition to robbing us of our humanity, racism is also killing the planet we all share.
An idea—a long-overdue realization—is growing in the environmental movement. It goes something like this: “We’ll never stop climate change without ending white supremacy.” This argument has entered the outdoor recreation and conservation space thanks to the leadership of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color in the climate justice movement. The idea has taken on new force as folks in the mainstream environmental movement do our best to show up for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and all the Black people still living and subject to police violence.
I know that a lot of people are struggling with the thought that addressing the environmental crises must involve dismantling white supremacy. At Sierra Club meetings, some people hear me say something like that and think, “Damn, fighting climate change wasn’t hard enough already? Now we have to end racism and white supremacy too? Seriously, man?”
I get that feeling of being overwhelmed. It’s a lot to carry. It’s a lot to hold. We all have enough to do without feeling like we’re taking on even more.
But I want to share another lens from which we can view this moment. I really believe in my heart of hearts—after a lifetime of thinking and talking about these issues—that we will never survive the climate crisis without ending white supremacy.
Here’s why: You can’t have climate change without sacrifice zones, and you can’t have sacrifice zones without disposable people, and you can’t have disposable people without racism.

Do not underestimate the author, Sierra Club Strategic Partnership Director Hop Hopkins.
Most greens are not very self aware. They usually leave a juicy picture somewhere of themselves doing something stupid or wildly hypocritical, like protesting against fossil fuel while wearing a petroleum plastic jacket.
Hop is different. He is not someone who overlooks small details.

The Symbionese Liberation Army was founded in Berkeley in 1973. By the 1970s after years of mass protests, some on the far left called for a political revolution and began to use terrorism to achieve this goal. Out of this environment, a number of organizations emerged including the Black Cultural Association, a black inmate group active at Vacaville prison. The group brought in white students to tutor prisoners in political science, black sociology, and African heritage.
Soon the group became increasingly political with Black Nationalism as its focus. Donald DeFreeze, serving a sentence for armed robbery, formed a splinter group called Unisight. The young white students from UC-Berkeley who saw all black inmates as political prisoners oppressed by the racist and corrupt American society assisted in his escape in March 1973.
By that summer, DeFreeze and his small group of white supporters had formed the Symbionese Liberation Army to oppose what they saw as an oppressive, racist society. With the slogan “death to the fascist insect that preys upon the life of the people,” the SLA adopted a Marxist platform that included ending racism, monogamy, the prison system, and establishing “homelands” within the United States for groups of color.

When S. Africa set up “homelands” for people of color, the same groups denounced them.
Ghana has invited African Americans to move there. English is the primary language.
NBC did a story about them 2 days ago including interviewing Americans who moved there.
Using climate change fear to govern is the definition of modern white supremacy. (And a leading example of white privilege.)
Not happy until the race war kicks off, these people. Well, all I can say is, it won’t last very long.
An unfounded charge of White Supremacy is a hate crime.

From the statistics I see, a big part of the problem is VIOLENCE AGAINST POLICE, not police violence. Black communities need to clean up their act and raise law-abiding and police-respecting kids. Too many black parents raise their kids to resist police and education. Police respond to how people they stop act. If they didn’t we’d have many more police funerals.
Using White supremacy is a cloak to assign guilt while not sounding racist.
White supremacy can be more easily translated to Whites.
I just see this as yet another example of people who live inside the Democrats’ media bubble winding themselves tighter and tighter around their own axle. This is a guy who depends for his credibility on being able to claim that he represents “science,” and that he has “science” behind him. Yet here he comes, delivering a rant about White Supremacy. That can only play inside the Democrats’ media bubble. In fact he will be lauded for this by the residents of Democrat Media Fantasyland. But to anyone who doesn’t live inside the media bubble, this guy just self-identified as a U.S. certified nut. He’s no scientist, and he’s no climate advocate. He’s just another left-wing goofball who was hijacking an allegedly-genuine issue to promote, well, now he’s promoting racial strife.
Yet he’s “careful.” He tries very hard not to make mistakes of just this kind. Which tells us that he doesn’t realize that he’s saying something that is pretty far outside the Overton window once you leave the bubble.
OK, let’s keep climate change.

We’ll never stop climate change. The sentence should have ended there. Whoever thinks that something different is possible is a fool.
That’s not true. My plan for stopping climate change is that we all move to San Diego. It’ll be 71 degrees and sunny every day.
