- Nikki Henderson, 26, flew to the US to sail 48-foot catamaran the La Vagabonde
- Voyage meant to save approximately 2 or 3 tons of carbon dioxide emissions
- But Ms Henderson’s flight to US to skipper vessel likely produced same amount

A British yacht skipper’s flight to the US to help Greta Thunberg sail to Portugal has produced the same amount of carbon emissions the voyage hoped to save.
Nikki Henderson, 26, flew to the US from Britain to sail 48-foot catamaran the La Vagabonde.
The vessel is carrying Miss Thunberg and her father Svante 3,000 miles to Portugal where she will go onto attend the COP 25 climate change talks in Madrid.

The journey was meant to save approximately two or three tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
But Ms Henderson’s flight from Britain to the US likely produced the same amount of emissions the journey hoped to save, countering Ms Thunberg’s mission, The Times reports.
Ms Henderson was a skipper in three ARC Trans Atlantic races. In two of them, she was the youngest competitor.
She also skippered the Caribbean 600 and has raced in three Caribbean seasons.
Ms Henderson tweeted: ‘I decided to help @Sailing_LaVaga and support Greta because she is changing the world – simply by standing up for what she believes is right and staying true to her values.

The ship belonging to Australian YouTubers Mr Whitelum and Ms Carausu, left from Hampton, Virginia
‘I so admire that, and hope to draw strength from her.’
The 16-year-old climate activist, who became world famous for founding the ‘school strikes for the climate,’ refuses to fly in planes because of the carbon footprint.
The ship, belonging to Australian YouTubers Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu, left from Hampton, Virginia, last month.
The couple also have their son Lenny onboard.
It aims to reach Portugal, more than 5,500 kilometers (about 3,500 miles) away. From there Ms Thunberg will make her way to Madrid in Spain for COP 25.

I came to WUWT today after seeing some climate stories on the Real Clear Politics News site.
One was by Greta, which I have not read past the headline, and another by a guy at American Greatness, Thaddeus McCotter, which I have also not started reading yet.
I was thinking about these articles, and Greta’s recent world travels, when I was reading yet another article by Steve McCann in American Thinker, here:
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/12/the_inevitable_breakup_of_the_american_left.html
I came to this passage, and felt myself becoming suddenly irate at the BS shenanigans of the Greta’s and Leonardo’s and Lurch’s of the world, most especially the self righteous but transparently hypocritical condescension they force us all to suffer through.
Then I saw this article and saw that it was closely aligned, sentiment-wise, with what I was already fired up about.
I have not read this article or any other comment here either, but I will. I wanted to comment first on what is on my mind w/o reading what anyone else is thinking or saying. I will comment more after doing just that…reading what others are thinking or saying.
All of the people I am thinking of… Greta, Di Caprio, Kerry…have been in the news more than their usual annoying quota in recent days and weeks, and even months.
All have zero qualifications or specific knowledge of the subjects at hand. And yet:
All are accorded a giant megaphone by the international press for their climate activism.
All spew what amounts to hate-based messages which drip with condescension, and reek of an overweening stench of heartfelt but hollow moral and intellectual superiority. And yet:
All have zero actual moral high ground to stand upon though, zero credentials as having any sort of exceptionally insightful intellect, and offer no basis for which anyone should revere them or respect their opinions.
In fact, each of them demonstrate blatant disregard for living lives which even appear to be consistent with the alarmist propaganda they spew.
The type of blatant disregard which is so profound it cannot possibly be explained away as a lack of self awareness or anything like that.
Each of them live daily lives completely at odds with every facet of the global warming alarmist malarkey, completely at odds with the far left anti-capitalist mantras they spew, completely at odds with their crocodile tear-laced oratory for the disadvantaged and downtrodden people of the world…
The breadth and depth of the hypocrisy and supercilious condescension of them and all of the like-minded ilk is literally sickening.
The middle school drop-out haughty scold mentioned in this article can be seen to be a cynical liar, once one knows that in order for her to travel by boat to and froe across the ocean that not just one but several individuals must do exactly what she goes to great lengths to claim she is against and personally ovoid: Her parents, handlers, support staff, and Lord-only-knows how many others behind the scenes of her little side show all travel hither and yon across oceans and continents by the very airplanes she would have her mindless sycophants believe she is against. And she knows it. Her travel plans require it. Her messaging demands it. Her lifestyle and carnival of lies finances it.
On top of that she is as much of a capitalist as anyone, and her massage has more to do with self promotion and self dealing as it does with anything to do with the environment.
Like pretty much the entirety of the hard core leftist leadership, she and her socialist brethren shamelessly enrich themselves which preaching about policies that by definition will destroy economies and impoverish the bulk of civilization.
The other two though, have been at this a lot longer than she, and show her to be a rank novice at all of this.
Those other two, Di Caprio and Kerry, are among the most elite core of that very special brand of hypocrites who espouse live lives of massively conspicuous consumption and wastefulness, with personal carbon footprints the size of an entire large town and massive wealth, while they spend much of their lives scolding the world about even occasionally doing any of the things they do every single day:
They screech about sea level rise while investing untold millions of dollars in coastal real estate; they fly around the world daily on fleets of private jets which declaring that fossil fuel usage is evil and immoral and about to kill us all; and they espouse policies which will impoverish billions, and destroy any prospects for widespread and ongoing prosperity of the people they condescend to, while they amass vast personal fortunes and do little if anything to actually help any single person in need.
These people are disgusting liars, rank hypocrites, and true scoundrels.
One thing we can all be sure of is that whatever they say is very far from what they actually believe or practice, and that their true goals have zero to do with the words that spew so sickeningly from their smarmy self-important mouths.
Oops…this passage here:
“During this period, I noticed that the vast majority of the volunteers fell into three categories insofar as their motivation to participate in the movement. The first, and most active, were the hard-core leftists who viewed the blacks as masses foot soldiers and a gullible constituency to be recruited to aid in overturning the government and establishing a socialist Nirvana. The second, and largest faction, were those who viewed African Americans as a population to be pitied, patted on the head and made dependent mascots so these pompous narcissists could wallow in their self-righteousness. The third, and by far the smallest category of activists, were there solely out of respect for the humanity of their fellow citizens by attempting to right the civil and political wrongs perpetrated against them.
My involvement in the movement ended when it became clear that the cause had been hijacked by the radical Left, obliviously aided and abetted by patronizing liberals and their supercilious mindset as both shared one common trait: a disdain for those considered to be inferior.”

Interesting points.
Thing is, the whole CC hoopla is in fact a capitalistic enterprise ? Modelled on the scheme that the Church pulled for centuries, whereby those who had concerns, but were unwilling to walk the walk, could assuage their conscience by means of the Indulgence. No doubt the groups mentioned serve as window dressing, but the main thrust is about making money ?
And to be fair it does for a few, seem to be paying off quite nicely. Even at the level of the UN, its almost all about the planets economic losers putting the bite on the winners ? 🙂
@Fanakapan No, it’s not capitalism. Capitalism creates wealth through manufacture and trade. Religion and the UN (and the Mafia) create imaginary services (indulgences – the Mafia sells protection) and coerce you to buy them. Coercion is not capitalistic free trade, it is extortion and racketeering.
I would agree on the manufacture and trade, but like your moniker, I’m an older guy also.
Sadly its moved on from the days of our youth ? Today the Big Money is made from rent seeking, and passing the manufacture stage on to some guy in an earth floored hut across the globe. 🙁
So true … excellent.
The boat is currently facing wind going 25 knots the wrong direction and they’re racing the clock to get her there. They don’t really have time to tack back and forth, and their course shows no indication they are. It’s too bad we couldn’t have gotten a shot of the diesel engine hours meter on that catamaran. I’d be willing to bet it’s going to show more hours on arrival than it had when they left.
She will miss the first day or two it seems, but they are just offshore, making great time, and heading straight for the port of Lisbon where she can get a fast train or car to Madrid and be there in a day or two.
Personally I am amazed.
Nikki Henderson is one of the best and most experienced sailing masters in the world, and seems to have chosen a route which made maximum usage of prevailing winds to make excellent headway after first spending a few days sailing south to reach an optimal (in retrospect) location for catching favorable winds the whole way…or as close as can be expected on a trans ocean trip this time of year.
They did great.
Best sailing master, something that I’d have to think comes at a well deserved price ?
Do we know if she is being paid for this assignment ?
No word on that, or even if Nikki Henderson flew to the US on her own dime, and ditto for the boat owners.
All of them have to get home now, so add that to the cost.
I suspect someone with very deep pockets is financing all of this.
The Diesel alone for the round trip of the yacht is some 1400 liters or more, plus any gas for the electric generator if any.
Six weeks of food too, for the round trip, and three weeks worth for the people only going one way.
Instead of hopping on any one of the daily flights that are going there anyway.
Many thousands of dollars at the very least, and that is if everyone volunteered their time and no charge for the boat time.
How much would it cost to rent that boat for a trip back and forth?
Sailboat rentals out of Norfolk vary hugely, from a few hundred per 1/4 day to over $16,000 per day.
A 65 foot schooner costs $800 per quarter day to rent.
My guess is if someone wanted to take that trip and have a pro sailor come to drive you, plus two boat owners who are also sailing experts, plus the boat…well over $100 thousand. Just for boat and pilots.
Here is a reference:
https://www.sailo.com/boat-rentals/VA/Norfolk
They are currently doing 3 knots and behind schedule. Meaning that all the diesel is gone. That is 700L of the stuff. Environmentalism taking a back seat to expediency.
I think they are in port, having arrived last evening.
Although their site lists a speed of 1 or 2 knots, the graphic shows them in port, and the last update was midnight GMT, which is some 8 hours or so ahead of the PST (or so I believe) of comments posting here.
Yesterday afternoon they were making strong headway and were less than 100 miles from Lisbon.
Aah, here is a tweet from a few hours ago in port in Lisbon:
https://twitter.com/GretaThunberg/status/1201843947376656384?s=20
And here, apparently the wind died as they made way for their port, as yesterday they had a fresh wind and were tacking towards Lisbon:
If they used 700 liters of fuel, just to get her to Lisbon, and all of those people also had to come to get her, and now must go back to where they were or planned to be prior to giving her a lift, then it seems that the fuel for the boat alone is as much as or more than the per passenger fuel usage for one person to cross the ocean.
Add to that the numerous travels of everyone else involved, and her boat ride was many times more “carbon impactful” than if she just got on a plane, which after all is flying there with or without her.
Par for the course with these people…even their virtue signaling is a pack of lies which accomplishes the opposite of what they loudly proclaim.
No need to point it out. It is as plain as gretas ugly mug
Mods, I have a post or two which have been flagged for moderation due to key word usage.
Thanks.
When did yachting across the ocean on a large sailboat become a carbon-free endeavour?
How much CO2 is needed for the manufacture of such a craft and many years does one last? And what is needed to maintain it?
It’s not only the carbon used in the manufacturing process. Fiberglass itself is a petroleum-based product. As are the synthetic materials used in the sails. And of course every piece of plastic on the boat.
Currently 16:57 GMT La Vagabonde is making 9.3 knots , course 151 true on port tack in 26 knots wind.
See for yourself.
https://sailing-lavagabonde.com/
“The journey (3,600 miles) was meant to save approximately two or three tons of carbon dioxide emissions.”
If she was just flying from U.S. North-East to Spain, “two or three tons” is a bit high. Assuming “fact-checking” has any relevance in the world of fantasy…
According to figures from German nonprofit Atmosfair, flying from London to New York and back generates about 986kg of CO2 per passenger.
This would mean a one-way hop across the atlantic might burn enough fuel per person to create about half-a-ton of CO2.
Another source:
An economy-class return flight from London to New York emits an estimated 0.67 tonnes of CO2 per passenger, according to the calculator from the UN’s civil aviation body, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
But, a ton here, a ton there… who’s counting?
Unlikely that plus or minus one passenger would make any difference to the amount of fuel consumed. Then again a Toyota Prius on a highway with just the driver in it consumes more fuel per km than the average per person in a Boeing 777.
Still though, for the sake of a calculation, there has to be an average amount of fuel used for passenger per mile.
I found several references for such info.
Because of the weight of the fuel, it is actually more fuel efficient to stop and refuel above some certain amount of miles, which is obviously different for each type of plane.
There is a Wikipedia page that details fuel efficiency of flying on various routes on various aircraft and various airlines.
For trans-Atlantic routes, it lists the average usage of 80 miles per gallon per passenger.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_aircraft
Norfolk to Lisbon is 3587 miles.
3587/80 = 44.84 gallons.
44.84 gallons is 169.74 liters.
Not accounting for anything or anyone else, it seems that boat used four times more fuel than simply flying there herself would have used!
LMAO!
Where does your factor of four come from?
Not accounting for anything or anyone else
The boat used ~185 gallons of fuel, and a flight on a 787 uses as little as 35 gallons per seat for that trip, and about 44 gallons at most.
Plus, the plane with one empty seat instead of a skinny girl in that seat likely did not use any less fuel, while the boat trip was only made to get her there.
So none of that 700 liters needed to get used at all.
4x was lowballing it.
Nicholas McGinley December 4, 2019 at 6:31 am
The boat used ~185 gallons of fuel
What evidence do you have that the yacht used that fuel and for what purpose?
Nicholas McGinley December 4, 2019 at 6:34 am
Plus, the plane with one empty seat instead of a skinny girl in that seat likely did not use any less fuel, while the boat trip was only made to get her there.
Rather strange logic here, you argue that having Greta on the flight wouldn’t use any more fuel but have claimed that Nikki Henderson fly to the US would use more fuel. Either they both use extra fuel or they don’t, you can’t have it both ways.
So none of that 700 liters needed to get used at all.
The evidence is that none of ‘that 700 liters’ was used at all!
Phil. Sez:
“The evidence is that none of ‘that 700 liters’ was used at all!”
I say:
Wrong.
The engines are used when the winds are light or to assist travel against the wind.
Also there has to be a source of electric power.
They reported being unable to make headway when they were nearing Lisbon due to being becalmed.
Why would anyone think they would not have used their available fuel to get where they were going as quickly as possible, or to help them avoid unfavorable winds and the storms they encountered on their transit.
As for “having it both ways”, that is completely disingenuous or just boneheaded, I am not sure which.
She is the one who claimed to have foregone flying in order to not have participated in the endeavor of flying since it uses petroleum.
You sound like you want to argue it both ways at once.
The arguments used by the author of the headline article and expanded upon by me (and others) is that no matter how you slice it, she is a hypocrite, and her passage by sailboat was only possible because other people flew, and her sailboat used fuel. And all of the people who needed to assist her in getting across the ocean by sailboat needed to not only get to where the embarked from, but then need to get back where they were prior to that. IOW, no matter how you slice it, or spin it, or twist the truth…the reality is that simply flying herself would have been far more thrifty in terms of fuel usage.
You have no evidence that that yacht did not use the fuel it had onboard, and simple common sense, and safety concerns, and expeditiousness, make it nearly inconceivable they would not have used fuel they had available at any of several points in their journey.
At the very least, they were running late for getting her to Madrid, which was the entire reason for the trip. And they were on that boat for close to three weeks.
Are you seriously suggesting they would not have used their engines when necessary to avoid the storms, and weather fronts, and to speed their passage, and not even used it when they were becalmed for almost a day just shy of their destination?
Stop being ridiculous.
Do you take people for fools?
The fact is every other human being on the planet flys when they need to get across the ocean.
No one uses sailing a yacht across an ocean as a fuel saving measure.
People do it for fun, or adventure, or as a sporting challenge, or whatever.
But no one else has ever claimed to use a yacht to sail across oceans as a way to save fuel and save the planet from catastrophe…because it is simply ridiculous to do so.
And most people are not so dumb as to risk their lives for the sake of some transparently useless virtue signaling.
Three weeks worth of food and onboard electric power for half a dozen people has a carbon footprint as well, by the way.
As an example, look at the blog posts of the owners of the yacht who gave her a lift.
Prior to sailing her across the ocean, they had written that their plans where to harbor their yacht in the US for the winter, and fly home to Australia for the Holidays.
In fact, a quick look at their social media pages shows they are currently in Sydney at a yacht club for a meet and greet.
And then a sailing race.
La Vagabonde is still in Lisbon, where I am sure it will be until they fly back to there to retrieve it.
How do you suppose they got to Australia real quick since last week?
https://www.facebook.com/events/2555491404672200/
I wonder how many days at sea it would take for that youngster to start getting on somebody aboard’s nerves.
Give Greta some credit. In my view, she is trying to shame the countless thousands who fly to climate conferences, in an irony-free atmosphere which the MSM and others are unaware of. Go Greta!
Andrew: How can you shame others by looking like a fool yourself? Greta is about as carbon-free and rational as a lump of coal.
On each leg of her sailboat transit, the trip was only possible because several other people flew across the ocean so she could sail across.
We do not even know how many, but it is surely a lot of other people.
And while in the US, she spent the whole time travelling by auto on a journey of many thousands of miles.
In a borrowed electric car.
Which, in the US, is running on coal, nat gas, nuclear, and a little hydro and solar and wind power at times.
She is a rank hypocrite.
She lives a life of conspicuous consumption while performing her contrived occupation of scolding people for having a fraction of the impact she and her travelling roadshow of climate doomsday mongers.
She has in a few months done more travelling than the vast majority of people in the world will ever do.
And it is notable she has not shown one scintilla of any direct evidence she has come across in those travels of anything even remotely crisis-like.
She is able to tweet out a request for a sailboat ride to Europe on short notice, and then actually get one.
Give it a try, and see how easily done that is.
Let us know.
I’ll be here waiting.
Yes, now what would be the cost if each delegate to COP was chauffeured around the country and over the ocean like her? When will the GULLIBLE MEDIA figure it out.
Then we have the GULLIBLE schools who still figure she is a role model.
Irony free?
This must be sarcasm, but you need to either leave a tell or give the call sign of such.
Tone of voice does not convey in printed words.
**Give Greta some credit**
Why? Someone posted after the Denmark conference that there were 1,000 limos brought in for the delegates? Why was not that person invited to address COP25 or talk to Trudeau, May, and Singh?
No, I find Greta a total hypocrite like the rest, only in a different way. When will she do a day of work to see how the food she eats is produced or she can go with the children and dig for the raw earth minerals to make her cell phone so she can tweet. I just sent a note to a school where the students think she is a model citizen.
I have a better message to give to the delegates about their 1.5 deg limit. Can someone get me there carbon free or whatever.
She gets a ride on a luxury boat. Can all the delegates do that? She has been elevated beyond any reasonable expectations by a GULLIBLE MEDIA and GULLIBLE politicians, just because she is backed by well heeled power seekers. Trudeau brought her in to help his election so she could read her script. By her own admission she knows next to nothing about climate and what to do about it. Of course she is not intelligent enough to figure out that you CANNOT change something that is MOSTLY NATURAL.
One day she MAY figure out she was USED AND ABUSED.
Andrew dickens
Really lol she had 5 people fly to bring the first boat back to europe after the original crew had flown back, now another person flew to the usa to bring her to europe… The only person who should be ashamed is greta, who is living her life to the fullest probably on u.n money, which is our tax dollars…
And the people who sailed her need to get back to where they were.
The sailboat owners had, prior to making this trip, planned on leaving their boat in port in the US and flying back to Australia for the Holidays, IIRC.
So now they will presumably need to get back to the US for their flights, or need to get back to Lisbon if they leave their ship in that port for the Winter.
And Nikki Henderson needs to get back to England.
I wonder if she will go by carbon neutral train?
Anyone want to lay odds on some other family members of Greta and the rest of that gang flying to Spain to join them?
My guess is that lots of people are constantly flying all over the world to support her show.
So, is Greta’s point that all 20,000 delagates should be in a luxury sail boat to attend COP25?
It looks like Greta Thunderbird will have to make the final trek from Lison to Madrid on foot to atone for the CO2 emission indiscretion from Ms Henderson’s flight from Britain to skipper Greta across the Atlantic. The pilgrims of olden days could do this but it might make Greta late for the conference. What a shame.
Would a Hair Shirt be in order ? Or has she not reached the ‘Troublesome Priest ridding’ level ? 🙂
To be fair, I’d not be surprised if her presence at the conference was to become akin to flatulence in a space suit. Her efforts to be seen donning what amounts to a 21st century Hair Shirt will not have gone unnoticed by the hordes of attendees who will see the even as nothing more than an annual all expenses paid works outing, the very opposite in fact of the show put on by Greta and her handlers.
If history really does repeat, then going by previous iterations, it would not be too fanciful to imagine Greta scolding the very people who may have seen her as an ally ? 🙂
If I were the cynical type, I’d say that sailing across the Atlantic both ways was pure marketing genius for the Greta Brand, as well as for her Alarmist message. But that would be wrong, because she did it out of the purity of her heart. We don’t call her “St. Greta” for nothing.
Just curious here…
Anyone else noticed St Greta’s father is ding all this travel with her but never shows up in pics?
This guy is supposed to be a professional ACTOR – what actor would not be trying for all the publicity he can find?
I think he is avoiding the pics because it would be more obvious that Greta is being led around and her speeches are scripted.
I’ve seen him in multiple pictures, e.g. here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/nikki.henderson.sailing/photos/?ref=page_internal
Greta is the solution.
Learn from Greta, Eva Braun’s great granddaughter. It’s about the no fly list for starters. Use an existing system to help. It’s cheap.
So add all XR, BBC staff to the no fly list, and all those people who believe in her. Ideally when they are abroad. They can try and get home. Same for all these climate conferences in islands in the pacific.
Introduce a new, electric only driving license. Revoke their fossil fuel licenses. If caught in a vehicle that is fossil fuel powered, the vehicle gets crushed. Even if they don’t own it. Including buses. That gets them off the street. They can all drive Teslas.
Of course no gas supply to anywhere they live. Easy to cross reference electoral roles against gas supply. The supply gets cut, plus it drives them off the voting system.
Smart meters. Must be good. We put them on Green only tariffs, with no subsidies. Then when the wind doesn’t blow, the electricity gets cut off.
Why not experiment on willing subjects and we can study the outcomes to see if they are good.
LordB
Brilliant 😀
Why concern yourself with mere facts , when symbolism is everything.
I guess she must be walking from Lisbon to Madrid
Hypothetical question, can a couple who fund their lifestyle by posting you tube videos, over 250 so far and those videos average say half a million views each, claim to have a low carbon footprint lifestyle? Or should the carbon generated by those views be included in their carbon footprint? This is a question about hypocracy not the pros and cons of carbon accounting.
No it’s like software companies that claim they’re going carbon neutral sticking in some LED globes and some solar panels on top of the office tower and buying green power with some carbon credits to make up the difference. The embedded plant food in the office tower office furniture computers etc, along with the working hour share of all the plant food needed to sustain the employees along with the infrastructure to get them to and from the workplace well that’s all ancient history and somebody else’s problem.
Ipso facto the Mike Cannon-Brookes of the world can lecture everyone about becoming plant food neutral and feel good about himself particularly if he drives a Tesla and bungs some solar panels on all the luxury getaways.
I do not think those two who own the sailboat are eco warriors.
They are Sun worshippers more like.
Devoted to living a live of carefree fun and adventure.
I think they just gave her a ride because they could and she had issued a public call for a free ride.
It seems likely that after contacting the Greta crew, the decision was quickly made to find a professional sail master, and for Nikki Henderson to fly from England to skipper the boat.
Sailing West to East at this time of year, at that latitude, is not a common or wise undertaking, but for a professional racer, the risk goes way down I am sure.
250 videos making lets say an average of $1000 a pop, to allow for the first ones that made not a lot, rather than the claimed $2000 now ?
This has some serious money making potential. 🙂
Pure evil in the guise of what by at least some as ‘good’.
I suppose this will be posted elsewhere (or maybe has been) on WWUT, but from the Babylon Bee:
New Greta On The Shelf Doll Will Track Your Climate Sins

Greta has the classic features of FAS.
I have seen the case for that.
Seems more strongly supported than her having Asperger’s.
Considerably so.

Take mom off the bottle!
Huge CO2 footprint just from the champagne and beer bubbles.
Are they laying down palm leaves for the arrival of the messiah?
Nikki Henderson-
“Whilst it could be misinterpreted this way, this trip was not about telling people what to do, or how to live. It was not about Greta or any of us travelling in the most sustainable way possible. …
This trip was about the bigger mission. It was for us to enable Greta – one of our influencers – our role models – to travel in the way that she felt was most in line with the youth climate movement message: To highlight the need for big structural change to fight the climate emergency. To make the point that there isn’t a sustainable way to travel yet, and there needs to be.
‘Big structural changes’ – no one knows exactly what that will entail. But I think it’s so beautiful that just by choosing to sail across the Atlantic, we demonstrated that it is possible to adopt ‘big structural changes’ into our lives – even if just for three weeks. These changes surely correspond with some of the changes necessary to solve the climate crisis: trusting science, setting aside differences and working together, sacrificing some of life‘s indulgences, surrendering control, compromising, staying optimistic – finding a shared sense of purpose. ”
You don’t know what the big structural changes entail so give up your indulgences and surrender control to the climate crisis emergency managers. Oh and don’t forget to remain optimistic.
I have only just noticed the claim that her father, Svante, is traveling on the boat with her. Anybody know how he got to America to join the boat?
It’s just that at the last jolly climate beano, COP 24, he is recorded as claiming he gave up flying in 2016…_
It is claimed that Svante sailed over to the USA with Greta in the first place. Does anybody have any pictures of him in the states with Greta, or at least on the boat…_
He is said to be on the boats with her, and it has been asserted that he is the one taking the pictures.
It is for sure he has accompanied his daughter in her travels.
I believe that his presence and influence is purposely kept from attention and even mention, since in fact he is almost surely the architect of her entire message and public persona.
Who thinks she writes all that stuff herself, arranges her own travels, lines up her speaking engagements, etc?
It would be difficult to believe he is not with her.
A minor child on long voyages with adults who are not relatives or acquaintances?
On the first journey, she was the only female on the boat, IIRC.
There were pix of her, him, their cameraman, the German skipper and the owner in Pierre Casiraghi’s boat for the E-W crossing.
Yes, all male but the girl.
Imagine the CO2 savings if all the thousands of people who travelled went via multi-million dollar fiberglass sailboats instead of taking a flight.
A Twitterer writing in Spanish noticed that in a picture of Greta Thunberg on her mom’s lap, the pair is sitting on a designer chair, with an even costlier, animal skin-upholstered Eames Lounge Chair in the frame. Both chairs are worth at least thousands of dollars.
https://twitter.com/iBarbarellah/status/1200898431184769024
A long, multi-lingual thread ensued on Twitter. The Spanish-language Huffpo picked the story up, but it appears not to have been found worthy on the English site.
