Claim: Criticism of Climate Messiah Greta Thunberg is Toxic Masculinity

According to The Conversation, the reason people get angry at the high tax job destroying policies advocated by female green leaders is because we are expressing our toxic masculinity.

Green with rage: Women climate change leaders face online attacks

Catherine McKenna, Canada’s environment and climate change minister, recently announced that she’s had to hire security to protect herself and her family while in public. With an election now on, it’s likely she’ll face further abuse in the weeks to come.

McKenna hired security after she was out with her children and a driver rolled down his window and shouted: “F-k you, Climate Barbie.” This sexist taunt was popularized by Conservative MP Gerry Ritz, who once used the slur in reference to McKenna on Twitter.

Maxime Bernier, leader of the Peoples’ Party of Canada, recently tweeted at 16-year-old activist Greta Thunbergcalling her:

“…clearly mentally unstable. Not only autistic, but obsessive-compulsive, eating disorder, depression and lethargy, and she lives in a constant state of fear.”

Following the proposal of the New Green Deal by U.S. congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, critics attacked her intelligence and her personal and professional background. National Review writer Charles Cooke referred to her as an “unmarried, childless bartender” who “somehow has the temerity to fancy herself a congressional representative.” He claimed the New Green Deal she supports is:
“ …an untrammeled Dear Santa letter without form, purpose, borders, or basis in reality.”

Misogyny at work

Climate denialism has also been linked to traditional assumptions of masculinity. Research shows that climate deniers are more likely to adhere to older forms of industrial modern masculinity that helped to push society towards “industrialization, mechanism and capitalism.”

Accordingly, some climate deniers prefer this older form of masculinity over a newer “eco-modern masculinity” of care and compassion for the environment.

A 2019 study found that some men will avoid certain environmental actions, such as recycling or using reusable shopping bags, in order to maintain “an outward-facing heterosexual identity.”

These versions of heterosexual masculinity appear to be predicated upon the domination and exploitation, rather than the preservation, of the environment.

I’m personally disgusted at efforts by climate activists to shut down criticism by accusing their critics of being racists or misogynists.

I do not support whoever allegedly yelled “f-k you climate barbie” at Catherine McKenna in the middle of the street, making someone feel personally unsafe should never be an acceptable part of democratic political discourse.

But the fact is climate activists legitimately deserve criticism. They want us to spend billions, maybe trillions of dollars on their wild ideas, and they want to seize control of untold trillions of dollars worth of assets which don’t belong to them, based on the flimsiest of evidence.

Climate activists suggesting their opponents have bad motives is a transparent and shameless attempt to silence legitimate criticism of their outrageously awful policy ideas.

“…clearly mentally unstable. Not only autistic, but obsessive-compulsive, eating disorder, depression and lethargy, and she lives in a constant state of fear.”

I’m not sure about the mentally unstable part (I expect she is mostly emotionally unstable), but the rest of Bernier’s quote is arguably true. However, the authoritarian climate activists who hide behind her youth and naivety don’t want to argue with the opposition, they want to silence them.

lol. If I remember correctly, didn’t Camille Paglia herself say some years ago that if it wasn’t for men, humans would still be living hungrily in cold caves?

A more recent retort to this sort of argument runs thus: “Look around where you sit in the modern comforts of a building in today’s world. Every brick in the wall you see is there because a man put it there. It’s much nicer to be inside that wall than on the outside.”

Are we now being criticised for being masculine? The conflation of toxicity and masculinity is about as ridiculous as it gets. Could someone tell us what the opposite of misogyny is? We all know the word for senseless dislike of females.
What is the senseless dislike of males? I am thinking it is misandry. Clearly, that is increasingly what we are seeing being expressed by the Green socialists.

September 13, 2019 1:39 pm

I do not support whoever allegedly yelled “f-k you climate barbie”

I’d say the “allegedly” is the key word in that sentence. Based on the veracity of claims of abuse by notable people over the past few decades, I’d be willing to bet money that incident never happened.

Those types of claims are just another way to dehumanize their enemy.

I don’t approve of bad language being used against anybody including women and children but these people must realise they are playing politics. Politics on the biggest scale imaginable. Politics is a dirty business at the best of times.

We have a saying here. “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”

That’s common practice. Most of the “useful idiots” are motivated by emotion, not reason. So slap an emotional label on the those who disagree with what is being promated. (Homophobic, Islamophobic, Zeno-phobic, etc.)
Accuse THEM of being emotionally motivated.

“50 Shades of Toxic Masculinity” – The Revelation of Saint Greta the Divine

Sara
September 14, 2019 4:22 am

There are two things Greta can’t avoid:

1 – she is nearing physical adulthood and will no longer be a “child”

2 – not everyone thinks she’s as wonderful as she’s been told she is

She’s just a source of money and attention for politicians to exploit. The sideshow will be over at some point, and it will be ‘who is this Greta you keep talking about?’ She really is a one-trick pony. Once the trick is played, she has nothing.

She’s got a hard future coming her way, and I don’t think she’s prepared for it at all.

Reply to  Greg Cavanagh

I agree.
Years pass quickly, and at her age a handful of years pass and she is fully an adult plus a couple.
And nothing will change.
Nothing.
The climate crisis is a fake made-up fantasy non-event.
The hoped for end of fossil fuels will never happen, period*.
If she is actually belaboring under the delusion that some little kid is gonna cause the world to spontaneously deindustrialize because she is afraid, because her teacher told her the end of the world is coming because the weather is gonna change and thus sterilize the Earth, then for many reasons she has some very important lessons ahead. And not maybe.
Her mentality is no different from someone who reads a story about a crime, hears that a suspect has been arrested, and makes up their mind about every detail of the case and the suspect’s guilt or innocence, and will hear no more about it.
IOW…it is the state of mind seen in lynch mobs, or in any of the other instances where people with scant information (and all of it second hand opinions fed to them by someone else) nonetheless decide they know all they need to and so close their minds up tight.
This morning I was reading about some celebrity moron who proclaimed that Greta IS Jesus Christ himself. This celebrity, who is famous for being a jackass, goes on to cast widespread scorn and aspersions on everyone and anyone who has failed to see this obvious truth.
We are beyond the looking glass at this point, inhabiting a bizarro fantasy land where ignorant fools in the eyeballs biz give credence to the scientific opinions of professional dumbasses when they proclaim some silly mixed up ignorant child to be God!
And this is international news carried around the world by major wire services and networks and print media.
No one is pretending Greta has any specific knowledge, least of all Greta.
No one thinks Sarah Silverman has some gifted theological insight, and in fact she is an avowed atheist.
Everyone knows “journalists” are scientifically illiterate, and yet they all pretend to have prescient scientific insight.

*For proof of this, look at the headline of the financial news pages this evening.
Oil markets will be opening up soon, and the price will be jumping somewhere between 3 and 10% this evening due to the attack on the Saudi processing facility this weekend. So reliant is the world on all fossil fuels, that any interruption in supplies of even a few percent of world capacity has immediate and costly ripples throughout global financial markets and the entire global economy, perhaps for years to come.

Something like this is as likely to lead to a widening shooting war as any news I have seen in recent years.

Superpowers will go to war over disruptions in energy supplies…but yeah…a little girl saying “please panic, I ascared” will make everyone reassess their desire to stay supplied with the substances responsible for us all having food, heat, light, transportation, a job, our health, and pretty much everything else that has led us from a long history of fighting for survival in a dangerous and brutal world filled with filth and abject misery, to a prosperous and safe industrialized world.

Well, markets just opened and it is more like 10-15%.
Trump has authorized a release from the strategic petroleum reserve, which I think is the first of these in many years.
Stock markets are shaping up to open sharply lower on fears of prices rising enough to slow the world’s economies.
All this from ten little drones.

There is something truly wrong with anyone who attacks a child that only wants a future.

Real men protect children and make sure they have the best future possible. They don’t attack and threaten them and deny them any chance of a future at all.

I’m not sure what climate change deniers are but it certainly isn’t real men.

What an ironic statement considering the close ties between the oil and gas sector and evangelicals. You pretty much treat oil and gas on the same level as god and vilify anyone who threatens your “god” as apostates.

https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/evangelical-history/anointed-oil-evangelicals-petroleum-industry/

There is something truly disgusting about the same group of almost entirely men who have been lying about an existential threat for decades despite the overwhelming science against them, now going after a 16 year old girl who only wants a future.

Dress it up in an cynical terms you want, the optics of grown man attacking a 16 year old girl is perverse.

Good heavens! These people are so obsessed with sex and sexuality that they can’t even talk about “climate change” without dragging that improbability into it.
If the truth is somehow toxic masculinity, then I’ll take that in preference to the sex/gender obsessed every time.

Besides, what about we thinking (non-neo-feminist non-transgender or any other variant) women who aren’t “true believers” in the scam? We’re hardly toxically masculine. This really is all rather intriguing.

Since when did the “Green New Deal” become the “New Green Deal”? Could it possibly have something to do with it being satirised as the “Teen Nude Eel”? I suppose we could always call it the “Nu Greened Eel” instead. Either way, the whole idea needs to be ridiculed – loudly and often.

Doug Coombes
September 15, 2019 2:19 pm

“Climate Messiah”?

How totally lacking in empathy do you have to be to show such utter contempt for a child?

Greta Thundberg didn’t create the climate change catastrophe, she just paid attention to the vast amount of science that indicates what a threat it is. And it had a profound effect on a child with autism.

This entire site is a prime example of toxic behavior. But I wouldn’t refer to any of you here as masculine in the slightest.

Reply to  Doug Coombes

She is an ignorant child who knows nothing.
The contempt is for what she says, not for her.
You Doug, on the other hand, are apparently an adult, and so your doltish lunacy and doomsday hallucinations are indeed worthy of utter contempt.

She is an intelligent child who has paid attention to the facts.

What do you call grown men who have spent decades deny research they themselves have done. On an existential issue.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/exxon-knew-about-climate-change-almost-40-years-ago/

There is no question the Earth is rapidly warming and that the consequences which are already catastrophic are going to become much more so. mostly due to the massive use of fossil fuels which now dwarf nature emissions of CO2.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/earthtalks-volcanoes-or-humans/

And now you’re attacking children because they don’t want to die early deaths due to your total inhumanity and hubris. It’s not just hate for women that is behind the vicious attacks on Greta Thunberg and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by climate change deniers such as yourself, it’s hatred for life itself on Earth.

What are the chances your’re going to care about a 16 year old girl when you obviously don’t care if you take out most of the biosphere.

I have good news and bad news, Doug:
The good news is, no one is “taking out the biosphere”.
That is a psychotic delusion, invented by your unwell mind.
The bad news is, you are unwell, suffering from severe psychotic delusions.
But if there was a climate catastrophe, all of your finger pointing and virtue signalling does not change the fact that you are as responsible as anyone. Neither you nor any of your psychotic ilk are living in mud huts. Your impact on the planet is just as large as the people you hallucinate are killing the planet.
And no one here is attacking anyone. This is an internet discussion, nothing more.
But people who travel around the globe spreading hateful propaganda are in fact engaging in a willful effort to harm others. And you are right there with them, on the attack against humanity itself. That is the only inhumanity in evidence, perpetrated by you and the sadistic haters you identify with.
Your preposterous imaginings and hateful lies are transparently obvious to sane people.

Avian species are in collapse.

Half the great Barrier Reef system died in two years and most coral reef ecosystems will be gone by mid century.

The oceans themselves are dying, the source of most free oxygen all aerobic species need and home to 95% of species on Earth.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2016/09/oceans-warming-global-environment-climate/

And the rapid migration of isotherms poleward due to climate change threatening many more species.

How is that not taking out the biosphere, we’re talking years not decades and the impacts of climate change alone are catastrophic as we are seeing with the massive coral bleaching and death of 50% of one of the richest biological systems on the planet in two years. 25% of marine species depend on coral reefs for their existence.

Everything you have posted is either an ad hominem attack, or fake news.
Great Barrier Reef 50% dead? Fake News. D you ever read news?
Bleaching caused by climate change? Fake News. It was caused by an el nino and low water level. The same corals live in far warmer water north of Australia.

The next 100 years will be awful if the communism she supports and advocates for is given all the power that is sought.
And no amount of proofs about anything that contradicts a person’s religion will ever change their mind.
Besides, do you think she is looking to be persuaded?
She has been quoted as saying, as part of her prepared remarks, that she does not want anyone’s hope.
She wants everyone to panic. She wants everyone to feel the fear she feels every day. She tells kids it is pointless to go to school because there is no future.
