The cult of Greta Thunberg

This young woman sounds increasingly like a millenarian weirdo.

By Brendan O’Neill writing at Spiked Online

Anyone who doubts that the green movement is morphing into a millenarian cult should take a close look at Greta Thunberg. This poor young woman increasingly looks and sounds like a cult member. The monotone voice. The look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes. The explicit talk of the coming great ‘fire’ that will punish us for our eco-sins. There is something chilling and positively pre-modern about Ms Thunberg. One can imagine her in a sparse wooden church in the Plymouth Colony in the 1600s warning parishioners of the hellfire that will rain upon them if they fail to give up their witches.

It actually makes sense that Ms Thunberg – a wildly celebrated 16-year-old Swede who founded the climate-strike movement for schoolkids – should sound cultish. Because climate-change alarmism is becoming ever stranger, borderline religious, obsessed with doomsday prophecies.

Consider Extinction Rebellion, the latest manifestation of the upper-middle classes’ contempt for industrialisation and progress. It is at times indistinguishable from old fundamentalist movements that warned mankind of the coming End of Days. I followed Extinction Rebellion from Parliament Square to Marble Arch yesterday and what I witnessed was a public display of millenarian fear and bourgeois depression. People did dances of death and waved placards warning of the heat-death of the planet. It felt deeply unnerving.

It struck me that this was a march against people. Most radical protest and direct action is aimed at officialdom or government or people with power. This macabre schlep through London was aimed squarely at ordinary people. Banners and placards made no disguise of the marchers’ contempt for how the masses live. We were told that ‘Meat = heat’ (that is, if you carry on eating meat, you fat bastards, the planet will get even hotter) and that driving and flying are destroying Mother Earth.

Of course, it’s okay for them to fly – Emma Thompson jetted first-class from LA to London to lecture us plebs about all our eco-destructive holidaymaking. It’s only a problem when we do it; it’s only bad when we take advantage of the miracle of mass food production and the expansion of flight to make our lives fuller and more pleasurable. They detest that. They detest mass society and its inhabitants: the masses.

I am appalled at the column inches garnered about this misinformed child who suffers from a mental disorder. But, having said that, I award full marks to the PR machine which has promulgated this utter nonsense.

I only wish that I, a relatively normal octogenarian, could stand up for truth and achieve similar results.

If a 16 year old were to attempt to lecture adults on any other subject than “climate change”, would anyone listen to her?

The Youth Movement is popular with zealots – indeed, the environmentalist in the clip below could almost be Greta’s grandfather. Fortunately, he delivers his message in a slightly more engaging style, although the content leaves something to be desired. Interestingly, there’s a cameo appearance from an Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics, looking none too convinced:

Another thing, even though she is apparently 16, why does she still have the appearance of an 11 year old?
Is that part of the image which has apparently taken in so many prominent people?
Interview with sycophantic Nick Robinson on the BBC yesterday:

This in the radio version.
There was a video on BBC tv yesterday although I can’t find it on line.

I admire Greta herself. She is successful in raising her concerns. My criticism would be of those who have misinformed her – the adults: ‘scientists’ and scientists, activists, journalists.
She was embarassingly feted by the British establishment yesterday. She put a quite convincing analogy to the BBC that: if your house is on fire, you get out, and don’t waste time discussing insurance policies, etc.
But of course, you can have fun with this misleading analogy. The equivalent in housefire terms would be:
– Dad smells smoke in his home, so he immediately raises the alarm, evacuates all the family from the house and calls the fire service. But of course, one fire truck is not enough, he needa 10 to be sure!
– Son: but Dad, it might be just some burning toast.
– Dad: We haven’t got time to check. We need to apply the precautionary principle and assume the worst.
– Dad: Son, by saying it might only be burning toast shows you don’t care that we all could die in a fire!
– Son. But how much will this cost the fire service if its only the toast?
– Dad: The question is how much it will cost if our whole house burns down. The cost of calling out 10 fire trucks is small compared to the cost of rebuilding the house and our lives!
– Son: that only applies if you are right about the housefire. We haven’t yet checked the toast, or whether its a small fire we can put out with our own fire extinguisher.
– Son: We’ve had burning toast and burnt dinners before, and we survived. Why are you so sure this is different?
– Dad: Because the smell and smoke are increasing more rapidly than ever before!
– Son: how do you know its faster?
– Dad: Look, smell, its obvious! It wasn’t like this when I last burned the toast 15 years ago – my memory is crystal clear. And you wouldn’t know, you were only a baby then.
– Son: what if there are other fires to fight (= other environmental and social problems) , and we are diverting all the trucks to our house for no purpose?
– Dad: That is not our concern. Its the government’s duty to make sure they have enough fire trucks and fire fighters to respond to every single incident (or suspected incident). The government did not invest in enough fire trucks because they have denied the risk of houses burning for years.

Etc, etc

Try Greta’s older sister Beata, according to their exhibitionist mother Malena Ernman in her new book: “She is prone to sudden outbursts of anger, during which she screams obscenities at her mother. What would normally be a 10-minute walk to dance class takes almost an hour because Beata insists on walking with her left foot in front, refuses to step on certain parts of the sidewalk, and demands that her mother walk the same way. She also insists that her mother wait outside during class—she isn’t allowed to move, even to go to the bathroom.”

Now the whole world has to walk according to Greta’s steps.

Looks familiar: “I ratted out my bank robber brothers” said Stefan Thunberg https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/aug/08/i-ratted-out-my-bank-robber-brothers-stefan-thunberg

(NB have an aspie son and am probably asperger myself, am still aghast at this phenomenon!)
