Most people were taken in by the false story of human-caused global warming. We can include all the students participating in the classroom walkout to demand governments stop climate change, organized by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg. Her goal is to keep global temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Apparently, she has no idea that the temperature was near or above that level for most of the last 10,000-years in a period known as the Holocene Optimum.
They are taken in by the false claim that a minute amount of human-produced CO2 is effectively controlling the entire atmospheric system since 1950 and causing environmental collapse through global warming. They don’t know that there is an upper limit to the amount that CO2 can increase temperature. They don’t know that the average level of CO2 over the last 250 million years is 1200 ppm. They don’t know that every projection of temperature by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1990 was wrong. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, how did so few, fool so many, to such an extent, for so long?
Similar situations occur throughout history of people fooling the world, although this is undoubtedly the largest in terms of its acceptance, impact, and cost. It is tempting to point the finger at the IPCC, but the speed with which the story took hold, spread, and deceived so many people requires better explanation. It likely won’t stop it occurring in the future because it speaks to the nature of human beings and our inordinate and pandemic fear that the sky might fall. However, we might stop the current insanity.
Global warming due to human activities was a subset of the wider moral panic created by the new and necessary paradigm of environmentalism. There are many parallels between the claims of human-caused global warming (AGW) and such events in history as the Salem witchcraft trials. In that case, the climate was probably to blame. However, it was never identified at the time and rarely mentioned by experts today. Instead, during a time of poor harvests and social hardship people were looking for something or someone to blame. Now they believe unequivocally that humans are to blame for everything.
Between February 1652 and May 1693, they brought 200 people to trial on charges of witchcraft. The symptoms were identified first in two young women brought before a tribunal and accused of hearing voices, dancing frenetically to exhaustion, all the classic symptoms of witchcraft. The problem is that these are also the classic symptoms of Ergot fungus poisoning. Conditions were ideal for the occurrence of high levels of Ergot poisoning at that time, just as they were for other periods of witch-hunting in Europe in the Middle Ages. Once people in authority formalize the moral panic through the formation of commissions of inquiry and other vehicles, the stampede is on. It takes on a life of its own that ignores facts, reason, and logic. In the Salem area they hanged 19 people, 15 women, and four men.
All this occurred in a society of Puritan’s, people taking their belief system to extremes. Today’s moral panic is occurring in an equally narrow belief system called environmentalism.
Sociologist Stanley Cohen identified the pattern of moral panic in a 1972 book titled, Folk Devils and Moral Panics. First, he identified the five stages of the panic as follows. I added in italics the names of the appropriate agent, agency, or factor as it relates to the moral panic of global warming.
- Something or someone is perceived and defined as a threat to social norms and the interests of the community or society at large.
The Club of Rome identified industrial development using resources at an unsustainable rate as the threat. They do this by burning fossil fuels and the by-product, CO2, is raising the global temperature to catastrophic levels.
- News media and members of the community/society then depict the threat in simplistic symbolic ways that quickly become recognizable to the greater public.
The UN created the IPCC that produced the false science using their computer models that isolated CO2 as the cause of global warming.
They then deliberately distorted their findings by the creation of a Summary for Policymakers.
- Widespread public concern is aroused by the way news media portrays the symbolic representation of the threat.
The IPCC produced the hockey stick graph that rewrote temperature history. It showed no temperature change for 600-years (the handle) followed by a dramatic increase after 1880 (the blade). As Ross McKitrick said, the hockey stick became the poster-child for global warming.
- Authorities and policymakers respond to the threat, be it real or perceived, with new laws or policies.
Millions of dollars were directed to alternate energies, even though a cursory look shows they cannot replace fossil fuels. Meaningful cost/benefit analyses were never done.
In most countries, no activity occurs without first receiving unnecessary environmental and climate approval.
Most countries created environmental laws that restricted energy use and development in a variety of ways.
They exploited guilt by creation of the concept of a carbon footprint; a vague and meaningless measure but visible on the landscape.
- The moral panic and actions by those in power that follows it results in social change within the community.
Energy companies that provided the basis for development that improved the quality of life for everyone on the planet became the focus of attack, including lawsuits.
The car that gave millions freedom, mobility, and wider options became evil on wheels.
Cohen then identified “five key sets of actors: involved.”
- The threat that incites the moral panic, which Cohen referred to as “folk devils”;
The folk devil is CO2 coming from those evil planet-destroying industries driven by their selfish, self-serving, profit motive.
- Enforcers of rules or laws, like institutional authority figures, police, or armed forces;
The biggest was UN Agenda 21 created through the bureaucrats of national weather offices. They even built in a Principle (15) that allows them to act even if there is no evidence.
“In order to protect the environment, the precautionary approach shall be widely applied by States according to their capabilities. Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation.”
We don’t need evidence. If we decide it is a threat, then it is a threat.
- The news media, which breaks the news about the threat and continues to report on it, thereby setting the agenda for how it is discussed, and attaching visual symbolic images to it;
The media is the great selector and amplifier of the global warming false story. Every day, they take a normal weather or climate event and say or imply it is abnormal. An emaciated polar bear was just one example of a visual symbolic image.
The media are the gossis in the global village.
- Politicians, who respond to the threat, and sometimes fan the flames of the panic;
Senator Timothy Wirth, an originator of the public panic said back in 1993 that
“We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing, in terms of economic policy and environmental policy.”
Al Gore, from the pulpit of the White House, used the best storyteller in the world, Hollywood, to create the best piece of propaganda ever produced – An Inconvenient Truth. Now, there is the more hysterical claim from the UN itself that there are 12 years left.
- And the public, who develop focused concern about the threat and demand action in response to it.
Demand for action from a variety of groups across the world hasn’t produced the economy destroying total social control environmentalists sought. Now they are using the children in the ultimate form of child abuse. It is sickening to consider the use of children in the Salem witch hunts. It was two children who started the accusations but as one author notes,
“Puritan belief suggested that children were among the most likely to become servants of the Devil. They were easy to influence and take advantage of. In some cases, their environment made these children susceptible to thinking that they were evil sinners, which made it likely that their confessions were heartfelt.”
Some people will argue that we live in different times and such moral panic cannot occur today. Many will add, this is especially true in modern western society. It is true, there is no burning of witches, but the ostracization from the society of those that the mob identifies are deniers is only one step away. What you cannot deny is that the world was taken in by a patently false story and overwhelmed by exploitation of fear and guilt that we, the people, are destroying the planet because of our greed and ignorance. If you don’t believe it, listen to the children, whose future you are putting in jeopardy.
A cynical definition of a Puritan is a person who is afraid that somewhere somebody is having a good time. Environmentalists are the new green Puritans. Is this why the attendees at the Second Continental Congress, the authors of the Declaration of Independence, identified the Pursuit of Happiness as an inalienable right – or were they just having a laugh.

It has been said that WWII was won on an ocean of oil…….meaning that the Allies had more fuel than the Axis.
That is certainly obvious in this graph.
Those measurements made in the 1800 and early 1900’s were not fit for purpose of measuring atmospheric background CO2. They weren’t meant to be. The samples taken then were not truly representative of samples that needed to be taken and analyzed.
One can easily see this is the discontinuity of the measurements.
Beck flagged the early readings as potentially unreliable but by 1930 there were good protocols in place and most of the measurements he gathered together were done by qualified techs and should have been largely representative of the atmosphere. Note the last chemical measurements overlap the Mona Loa curve and fit it quite well. The
mid- 1940s set was from Barrow Alaska where it should have been easy to get good uncontaminated samples.

The “delta T” [threshold of purported dangerous climate change] has been arbitrarily and unscientifically ascribed at 1.5 -2.0 deg. C “above pre-industrial climate”.
Think about that for a moment. Do you [not] see the obvious sleight of hand in this fundamental argument of the leading Climate Scientists?
Much of the blame for the climate change hysteria must be laid at the door of mainstream media because of their reluctance to publish anything that is contrary to the AGW myth.
It will be interesting to see how the media handle President Trump / Will Happer’s enquiry into climate science. My prediction is that there will be a massive stream of absolutely damning information, which the media will report in as small a way as possible while accompanying each piece with news of hot weather in some place or other and authoritarian contra statements by “well-qualified” climate scientists and prominent politicians and celebrities. But at some point, there will be a statement that can be portrayed by the media as a mistake, and that “mistake” will be plastered all over the headlines, all through several days of prime time news, to the point that Will Happer will go under.
Most predictions do turn out to be wrong, and I sincerely hope that mine is no exception.
It is certain that the Leftwing News Media will attack anything Dr. Happer does.
Whether the attacks will be effective or not remains to be seen. I personally doubt they will be successful because the Alarmists have a very weak case to defend and Happer has a very good chance of making the American people realize just how weak the case is.
We need scientists like Dr. Happer to say that the science is not settled, not even close. The Alarmists will have to respond, and then the truth will out, and the Alarmists will be shown to be the charlatans they really are.
Happer should declare there is no empirical evidence that CO2 is affecting Earth’s atmosphere, and then challenge the Alarmists to prove him wrong. What are the Alarmists going to do then, since they don’t have any empirical evidence to provide? They’ve lost the argument.
Unfortunately, even Happer voluntarily surrenders too much ground on the AGW hypothesis, in essence “agreeing” that a doubling of atmospheric CO2 *will* cause “X” amount of warming. This is false, as it is, as is the whole of the AGW “case,” PURELY HYPOTHETICAL, and requires the (in understated terms) GIGANTIC caveat expressed thusly: “ALL OTHER THINGS HELD EQUAL.”
Without the “ALL OTHER THINGS HELD EQUAL” part, there IS NO EFFECT, demonstrated from any actual EMPIRICAL OBSERVATION, that CO2 does ANYTHING to the temperature, and by extension, the “climate.”

I heard a story this morning about how the news organization Reuters withheld negative information about Richard Francis “Beto” O’Rourke until after he ran for the U.S. Senate against Ted Cruz. It seems Beto was a member of a hacker group in his youth, and Reuters withheld this information in an effort to assist Beto’s U.S. Senate candidacy.

The so-called “Little Ice Age” is widely accepted to have ended in the mid-19th Century. Peak Glacial Extent for the Holocene occurred in approximately 1860. This marked the end of what was probably the coldest extended period on Earth since the onset of the Holocene, which witnessed the melting of widespread continental ice sheets.
Historically, “pre-industrial” would be late 18th Century, as the ‘Industrial Revolution’ transpired during the early 19tg Century.
In any case, the temperature records become quite thin for anything preceding the mid-19th Century.

That doesn’t really matter. We don’t have to go back nearly that far in history to find something significant to the CAGW argument.
We have good temperature records of the 20th Century and those (unmodified) worldwide records show that the 1930’s were as warm or warmer than subsequent years, which is all we need to know to tell us that CO2 is not a significant factor in today’s climate because we had the same climate in the 1930’s, and the 1930’s are not associated with CO2 warmig, even by the IPCC.
The warmth of the 1930 was caused by Mother Nature and we have to assume that the similar warmth of today has the same cause. Or at least that’s what we should assume if we use logic and reason.
Indeed. It is certainly very unclear whether the globe today, is truly warmer than it was in the late 1930s/early 1940s.
Since we know that it continued to warm between 1860 to 1880, it is extremely difficult to accept that the LIA ended in 1860.
Further, the warming out of the LIA was always in fits and starts, and since we know that it warmed between 1920 and 1940, and the only explanation for this warming is natural causes, it is rather difficult to accept that the LIA came to an end before 1940. It is likely that this warming is part of the rebound.
In fact, isn’t the test as to when the LIA came to an end, to ask at what date are temperatures at the level preceding the entry into the LIA? IE, have temperatures reached that seen in the MWP?
Now of course, we do not have thermometer records going back to the MWP, but there is strong proxy evidence that temperatures during the MWP were as warm as they are today (late 20th century/early 21st century), if not warmer.
I am not convinced that we are yet fully out of the LIA.

My other half and I were just remembering back in the 60’s when children were drilled in school for what to do in case of a nuclear attack. As young couples we were incensed not to have children because the world had a good chance of being uninhabitable because of nuclear war. Like many others the company I went to work for out of college had a program to help employees build and stock fallout shelters in their basements (which, by the way, later, when the scare subsided, made great fruit cellars!). This “State of Fear”, as Micheal Crichton apply put it in his best selling book, set us up for the “global cooling” scare initially brought on by nuclear fallout, but later due to the first incarnation of “climate change”!
It is fascinating how history repeats itself! The one thing that does seem to be constant is human nature!

In Atascadero, CA there were less than 10 students who showed up to protest. The other students wanted to be in class learning. Those students have goals for their lives, and it does not come from government for free.

Ten years ago the majority of people might consider that those in Authority might be genuinely mistaken, but not that they were in fact deliberately lying. Today the default assumption amongst broad swathes of the populations is that that is exactly what they are doing.
Right or wrong, inundated as we are in the UK by the Brexit maelstrom, one poll stands out for me: A poll of public trust in ‘authority’ figures like politicians, national and international, media pundits, doctors, lawyers, scientists…cross referenced against whether they supported leaving the EU or not. The correlation was stark. Those that wished to leave the European union overwhelmingly distrusted all authority, those that wished to stay, broadly did not.
And those that wanted to leave were in the majority of voters in the 2016 referendum. In the UK at least, public trust in ‘authority’ has never been lower, in my entire lifetime.
(And frankly watching the naked pressure, bullying, lies, deceptions, finagling and whatever – including what can only be classed as utter incompetence- . being enacted in our parliament and indeed in the sordid troughs of Brussels, they are entirely justified).
What I think we are seeing, is that those in charge of the Western worldview, those that have given us climate change, gender politics, diversity, cultural Marxism have lost control of the narrative.
They got arrogant, greedy, overconfident, sloppy and lazy. “The plebs will believe anything we tell them…”

We fought and beat an application for a wind turbine above our town, our victory mainly I suspect because we pointed out it was designed to maximise the subsidy take, not to minimise the use of our poor groaning world’s resources, which in the UK is against the law. (No, it’s not against the law to maximise subsidy but you’re supposed to minimise resource use. Don’t ask me, I didn’t write the rules.)
This got me involved with our local MP and we exchanged views. He as a representative of the landowning, property developing, subsidy exploiting class obviously thinks that wind turbines are a good idea – have you seen those subsidies? – while I represented those whose houses would lose 10 to 12% of their value. Then, when he had been appointed the Minister for Energy, we were at a meeting in the town and he bounced up to me.
“Julian, solar, solar’s the thing! Solar panels are really cheap, it’s the way ahead!”
“Yes, Minister. But you’ll have to store the electricity.”
He looked at me for longer than expected, his face blank. Then he bounced back.
“Oh! Yes! Yes! We’ll have to store the electricity!”
He tiggered off.
He was the Minister for Energy, responsible for keeping the UK’s lights on and he hadn’t been briefed: he didn’t know that you use electricity or store it, it doesn’t just hang around. His first class degree from Oxford is Politics, Philosophy and Economics, the Oxbridge equivalent of Media Studies for poshoes.

Kids today are increasingly media-savvy, in ways the generations that grew up thinking “if it’s on TV, it must be true” can never be. When the backlash to the BS comes, it’ll be severe. Anyone with a search engine can find out the facts, and where teen rebellion meets narrative it won’t be pretty.
Global warming relates to a fear of death. If we put ourselves in charge of death, we are God, and through that, may achieve eternal life. This is also why conspiracy theories of big pharma having the cure for cancer but selling us shit medicine instead to make more money (the greedy ruthless bastards) also circulates regularly. We want control and we want to live forever. Whether the movement is religion or shamanism, the needs driving the social results are the same.

Indeed the complete opposite, religion/shamanism is more about attaining a positive attitude towards inevitable death, and lack of control.
Both redefine the relationship with death and control by positing a realm beyond life and death, this reducing the enormity of death, and also this realm is where the ultimate forces that drive everything reside, which , though by processes of magic or indeed science, coming to some understanding of these forces donates power to the wise, does not in any way mean that we can actually control those forces.
When the Inuit converted to Christianity they said that it was a great release from fear — no longer was every rock potentially a malign entity.

The 12 year scare doesn’t actually come from the UN report. However it certainly has come from Al Gore’s Church of Climatology.
Michael Mann et al. have moved on from the IPCC reports . They have founded
the Earth System Sensitivity. It has its roots almost as long as AGW. Back in the 80’s was when it really got started. To do that they need to control the past with different climate models because only with the past can they control ( model) the slow processes needed so that they will project far into the future 500 years if necessary. To do that they have to take over the 2 faculties that are standing in their way.

The alarmists have serious problems if they can only fool 6 people.

There might be another interesting factor of how human brain perceives stability. My layman psychology definition would be “Fears Quota”.
It just stroke me as I discussed the recent German lefties proposal to limit personal air travel to two flights per year. My interlocutor asked me if I wasn’t afraid to turn earth into a hot furnace by burning that many tons of “petrol oil” each day.
Happens that while busy at burning them, this is the least of my possible fears as so much more genuinely worrisome events can interfere with the process.
Would it be that, in absence of really life threatening dangers, humans just tend to invent irrationals that could fulfil their “Fears Quota” ?
Which could explain why green catastrophic narratives work well in socially safe rich regions such as Germany where real daily life dangers are close to zero ?
Isn’t this just a reflex from past eras when early humans competed for survival with other species and only those perpetually in alert made it thru ?

This “Gaia worship” stuff started back in the 1970s with Earth Day, and “lets’ stop pollution” – that sort of thing – long before the internet was anything more than a minor daydream. Then it got to climbing the hysterics ladders, level by level, and now we have Big Bucks involved, as well. When people are brought up with no spirituality in their lives, they try to find something they can believe in, and guess what it is this time? Go on. I dare you. And when money and political power are included in this morass of twaddle, it makes it even worse, therefore, it is very necessary that we keep a weather eye on it at all times.

In general, they get too little physical activity and they consume far too many calories for their lifestyle. They generally engage in too much screen time and this will likely lead to skeletal abnormalities. If cellphones do cause cancer, then they are in for big trouble.

Start with religion. Divine right of kings. Papal infallibility.
The main religions on earth all teach something different. At the very most only 1 of them can be right and the rest of them are wrong.
And from this, since at best only 1 can be right, and all the rest wrong, what are the odds the remaining one is right. Chances are the one that might be right is as wrong as all the others.
And since it can easily be shown that humans have been misled on such a fundamental question as religion, why expect a belief in climate change to be any different.
Look at the motivation for the lie and you will realize it was a lie. The solar and wind proponents knew that they would never produce electricity for less than natural gas or coal. They wanted solar and wind energy to replace fossil fuels. What could they use to beat fossil fuels. CO2 cause global warming. They thought that fossil fuels could not possibly get rid of their CO2 emissions for less than about $40/MWh for natural gas and $80/MWh for coal since it has roughly twice as much CO2 emissions as coal. Mow both solar and wind energy claim that they have beaten out coal, and unfortunately coal plants are shutting down because of teh Lvelized Cost of Electricity. Lets look at the present data. Solar claims t be as economical as natural gas. That woul dbe true if the natural gas cost was $60MWh and wind and solar were running at the same service factor as a=natural gas and coal. utility cost versus solar+wnd capacity unstalled per person and Poland and Hungary had the lowest electricity price and the least solar and wind power in W per person. Germany and Hungary ha dthe higheest electricity prices and the highest solar and wind capacity. This makes me question the oision of nuclear power on the graph because Germany still has nuclear power plants running and they are below the line. Denmark ahs biogas power plants. I know the Germany would get at most 50% out of solar collectors. so I strted looking for in service factors for solar and wind power. 30% was the number I found. That does not campare well with a seervice factor of 95% for natural gas and coal. If you include the service factor natural gas comes in at $63.17/KHh, coal comes in at $105.26/KWh, wind comes in at $150/KWh and solar comes in at 166.67/KWh. That explains the European Cost of eelectricity. Now lest look at sequestration costs.
As usual I can only commend Dr. Ball for his compelling analysis of today’s witch-hunt industry.

Hayek’s seminal and still indispensable study of socialism, “The Road to Serfdom,” devotes an entire, though very dated, chapter to the phenomenon, “Totalitarians in our midst.” In it he devotes several pages to long forgotten excerpts by his contemporaries, which he describes as taken directly from Nazi doctrine. It should come as no surprise to any of us that this depraved state of mind has never lacked for advocates and votaries, or that it should take so little effort to survey and enumerate the totalitarians who seem to dominate the public forum today.
I regret being a broken record in recommending Hayek’s analysis whenever the opportunity arises. It is a difficult text to read, but I believe that an acquaintance with this brilliant piece of historiography is essential to every person in every age who values, cherishes individual freedom.
What history teaches us is that just about everything we believe to be true today will in future be shown to be wrong.
Every scientific belief, every religious belief, every cultural belief, every political belief. Most will turn out to be wrong.
Consider bloodletting as a cure for illness. For 2000 years it was what surgeons relied on. And it was only comparatively recently, over the past 150 years, that it fell out of favor.
Now imagine that you are standing in front of the top surgeons in the world 500 years ago, trying to convince them that bloodletting was pseudoscience.
They would tell you that you were wrong because everyone says you are. And if you persist in your false belief the cure will be to treat you with bloodletting.
And after a few sessions of bloodletting it is very likely you would give up your claims, proving that the surgeons were correct after all.
That sufficient bloodletting will cure just about anything. It is only a matter of finding the right dosage. Which is where experimentation and observation come in.

The reality is that the anomalous warming that has occurred has been CAUSED by the environmentalists!
The mechanism is simply the reduction in dimming anthropogenic SO2 aerosol emissions due to global Clean Air efforts, and is NOT due to rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Cleaner air = increased solar heating of the Earth’s surface = “anomalous”‘ global warming.
This is indisputable.
Sequestration Costs. When you burn fuel at low pressure you have to separate the CO2 from the excesss oxygen and the nitrogen or you would be compressing a whole lot of stuff. Once you get the CO2 you have to compress it to put it underground. We were trying to upgrade Alberta Bitumen so that it would be inexpensive and can be processed in nearly every refinery. That means take the asphaltenes out of the bitumen. Once you get them out you have to do something with them. A company I worked for before wanted to pile them on the ground. That made a huge pile every year. so you have to burn them and dispose of the flue gas. I knew we could do that with gasification. I looked at tge gasification unit and thought to myself why aren’t they simply adding more oxygen so that they produce CO2, SO2, and NO2 from the gasification reactor. I then went to the patent literature and the only thing I found on pressurized combustion was that the equipment would be very expensive. That is the type of challenge that I love to see. I set about making the pressurized combustor as inexpensive as I could. When I git done we contacted a cost estimator from one of our client companies to do a costs estimate on my pressurized combustor design. He called me and asked if he could work with us. I asked why and he said “you have designed a pressurized combustor that will be less expensive than the atmospheric pressure combustor it replaces, and you will be able to release the flue gas directly into a sequestration facility. That will save coal fired power plants and natural gas fired power plants from the onslaught from solar and wind power. I conservatively estimate $5/MWh for flue gas sequestration.
Those young folks in the photo look so cared-for, sporting those stylish hair arrangements, tats, clothing, … looking well-nourished, clear skinned, and otherwise quite comfy, with their expressive signage, …all in a protected setting, free from exploding bombs, bullets, dirty water, disease-bearing insect swarms, rodents and other vermin.

All the statistics on severe weather show there is less severe weather now than in the past. CO2 is not causing the weather to do anything it hasn’t already done before, when human-derived CO2 was not a factor. History goes back further than 75 years.
A person can see faces in the clouds using sufficient imagination.. A person can see CO2 at work in the atmosphere using sufficient imagination. But that’s the only way a person could “see” it, because there is NO evidence that CO2 is having a detectable effect on the Earth’s climate. NONE!.

I am just a layman. I formulated my own opinion about AGW. IMO, it’s an example of mass hysteria. It’s a UN and NWO scam, designed for control and confiscation.
Take 1,000,000 pennies. Lay them out, it’s a 62.5′ square. Then call 400 of those pennies atmospheric CO2. A 15″ square.
I don’t see how there is physically enough CO2 in the atmosphere to cause heat retention. Also isn’t man made CO2 4ppm?
Also, maybe the AGW’s need a better imminent disaster. There is plenty of evidence of major planetary impacts in ancient history. We’re in a cosmic shooting gallery. They could call themselves STC -Stop The Comets.
Notice that these kids aren’t actually doing anything themselves. They are demanding that other people take responsibility for the “change”. They have every expectation to continue their comfortable lifestyles unabated.
