Nancy Pelosi Announces Plans For A House ‘Climate Crisis’ Committee After Flying Thousands Of Miles To A Hawaiian Resort

  • California Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi announced the creation of a House “climate crisis” committee.
  • Already far-left Democrats are expressing their discontent with Pelosi’s plan.
  • Pelosi announced the “climate crisis” committee after flying thousands of miles to Hawaii.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced Friday that Democrats would create a Select Committee on the Climate Crisis in 2019, which will be headed by Florida Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor.

However, Pelosi’s announcement isn’t placating progressives in her party, such as New York Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who support “Green New Deal” legislation.

“This committee, if it turns out that the rumors about it are true, sound about as useful as a screen door on a submarine,” Ocasio-Cortez spokesman Corbin Trent, told The Hill.

“As it’s portrayed it’s going to be completely incapable of solving the greatest threat to human kind,” Trent said.

Pelosi, who’s expected to be elected House speaker in 2019, said there’s “tremendous pressure” for Democrats to make fighting global warming a central part of their agenda in the new year.

Pelosi made her announcement amid a government shutdown after she flew thousands of miles to a luxurious Hawaiian hotel where she was spotted Thursday, according to reports. (RELATED: Nancy Pelosi Vacations In Luxurious Hawaiian Resort Amid Government Shutdown)

The creation of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis is one way Pelosi plans on satisfying progressives without angering incoming committee chairs, like New Jersey Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone, who want to advance their own climate bills.

“It is with great enthusiasm that I appoint Congresswoman Kathy Castor as the Chair of our new Select Committee on the Climate Crisis,” Pelosi said in a statement issued Friday.

“She will bring great experience, energy and urgency to the existential threat of the climate crisis,” Pelosi said. “This committee will be critical to the entire Congress’s mission to respond to the urgency of this threat, while creating the good-paying, green jobs of the future.”

Pelosi’s climate committee isn’t expected to have subpoena power or authority to advance legislation to the House floor for a vote. If that’s the case, it would be weaker than the previous select climate committee behind the 2010 failed cap-and-trade effort.

“The American people have demanded action to combat the climate crisis, which threatens our public health, our economy, our national security and the whole of God’s creation,” Pelosi said.

“Together, we must protect public health by reducing air pollution, create jobs by making America preeminent in green technologies, defend our national security by preventing climate-driven instability and uphold our sacred moral responsibility to leave a healthy, sustainable future for generations to come,” Pelosi said.

Ocasio-Cortez is leading a small, but growing, cadre of far-left Democrats who back a “Green New Deal” — a vague plan that would mandate the U.S. get 100 percent renewable electricity, universal health care and federal jobs programs.

The “Green New Deal” could end up being the largest expansion of government power in decades. Its expansive nature has some Democrats skeptical if it can even pass out of the House.

Environmental activists stormed Pelosi’s office twice in 2018, demanding a “Green New Deal.” Part of that plan is having a House panel with full committee powers, something Pelosi’s committee is unlikely to have.

“Leadership in general is about listening to the voices of the people you’re supposed to be leading and I don’t believe this process incorporated that very effectively,” Trent told The Hill.

“As it’s portrayed it’s going to be completely incapable of solving the greatest threat to human kind,”

Actually, the greatest threat to human kind is far left lunatics who want to destroy capitalism.

You guys are all missing the point.

Read this, and then read it again:
Already far-left Democrats are expressing their discontent with Pelosi’s plan.

Cracks in the shell! They will spend so much time squabbling over this and other plans like it, and/or anything the not-so-far-Left Democrats cook up, that nothing will get done.

May they spend so much time on internal squabbles that nothing gets done. And may it be widely publicized!!! I wondered what it would take. Now I know. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Obi wan Kenobi and the Holy Cow.

I could not have asked for a better 12th Day of Christmas present!

Thanks for the heads up on the beginning of this internecine squabbling marathon. I am stocked on popcorn and cookies.

Let the games begin!!!!!

A recent poll asked registered Democrats who they would like to be the presidential candidate in 2020. It included Biden, Clinton, Sanders, etc.

Topping the poll was “Someone New”.

The Democratic Party is falling apart.

As far as this “Climate Crisis committee” goes, Pelosi may be using it as a bargaining chip to gain the votes for her Speakership. She agrees to give the committee the authority the radicals want, and in return they vote for her for Speaker.

It looks like the Democrats are going to push the climate change crisis meme and this is our chance to make them prove their case in public. We should require they show us evidence that CO2 has added net heat to the Earth’s atmosphere, and that this net heat has caused the weather to do things it otherwise would not do.

The can’t provide this evidence. We all know it, and they know it, too. What they will do is use arguments from authority (IPCC), and skeptics need to debunk these arguments. The CAGW arguments have been debunked numerous times in the past, but we need to go another round, and since the Demcrats are going to make a public issue of this now, the debunking will also be seen by the public. So sharpen up your arguments. You will have a chance to use them in the future.

And debunk IGPOCC itself—Donna Laframboise’s book, The Juvenile Delinquent … should be employed to help do this.

I think and hope you are right! The “Socialist” front being embraced by the Democrats may seem large and well organized but that’s only because they have a large presence in the media. Big cities will support them up until they are asked to change their lifestyle and then reality will set in. Imagine telling a snowflake that they will have to now use public transportation, give up their private home, reduce spending on non essentials like cars/clothes/electronic toys, and their college education will be as meaningful as the piece of paper in a fortune cookie when it comes to pay and getting ahead.

If Nancy spends the remainder of her political career trying to impeach Trump, trying to destroy our energy infrastructure to stop the climate from changing (improving), and trying to impose socialism I foresee great things for the Republicans in general and Trump in particular.

Well…
They are 2 possibilities. One, as soon as she starts to talk, all will evacuate in record time.
Two, they will stay and ask for more endoctrination. Only regret, captain is the last to leave the ship.

This minor inconvenience besides, positive outcome in both cases.

Even Fox had a special about how 2018 has been a year of particularly nasty weather, jumping on negative fake news bandwagon. Even with pictures of the Paradise fire! Weather event? Weather assisted perhaps but not weather caused. Normal weather for that area over time. Drought and wind are cyclical there. Tornado and hurricane incidence were down in frequency.

It was reported that 2018 had the fewest deaths caused by tornadoes in recorded history with four deaths this year. The previous low-death-rate year was 1910, when 12 people were killed.

The year 1910 was one of the coldest periods in recent times.

What is depressing is how many of our fellow Americans support the likes of Pelosi, Schumer and Hillary and put more of their ilk into office at the ballot box! Envy, greed and ignorance may well destroy the great American experiment rather than attack by exterior enemies or anything nature of the cosmos throws at us. It would seem that people are simply incapable of self rule. History says that all such experiments eventually collapse into some form of dictatorship. Plato theorized that “philosopher kings” we’re the best form of government i.e. Benevolent dictators, if there is such a thing.

Maybe. But there was never an internet before, either. Maybe the internet will save our feedoms for us. We should do all we can to prevent any one entity from controlling the free exchange of information. As long as we can talk to each other freely, we have a chance.

Hello. I have a question that is off topic but was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for an answer. If the second world war was the greatest movement of man and machine, why was there a cooling trend from the 40’s to the 70’s. Considering the (claimed ) sensitivity of earth’s climate to co2, should there not have been a warming during this period? Has this been discussed at WUWT before? Just genuinely curious

Not just during the war, but after it as well, there was a big increase in industrial activity, and a consequent surge in CO2 emissions. The way they climatesplain the fact that temperatures actually went down during a time when CO2 emissions were going up, is they use the convenient excuse of increased aeorosols fouling the air, and blocking the sun somewhat. The problem with that argument though is that it greatly decreases the claimed warming effect of CO2. Oops.

I blame the baby generation. The baby generation got what they wanted by crying. They taught subsequent generations the same thing. That is how they tolerate the hypocrisy of flying around the world to conferences where they discuss how to get someone else to reduce their production of CO2. Previous generations were taught personal responsibility. Baby generation virtues are protesting and raising awareness. To everyone who believes in personal responsibility, baby generation virtues seem like blatant hypocrisy. To themselves though they are just doing what they have been taught from the time they were in diapers.

From the article: “Pelosi, who’s expected to be elected House speaker in 2019, said there’s ‘tremendous pressure’ for Democrats to make fighting global warming a central part of their agenda in the new year.”

So, this low-information career politician would really prefer that humanity never exited Earth’s last glacial period and entered the current Holocene epoch as a result of GLOBAL WARMING?

Does she even consider that human civilization, as we know it, would not exist without global warming? . . . that’s a rhetorical question, of course, because I already know the answer.

If she really felt that the use of fossil fuels was bad then she would stop making use of all goods and services that involve the use of fossil fuels. But she is not doing that. It is her money that is helping to keep the fossil fuel companies in business.

Based on the paleoclimate record and the work done with models, the climate change we are experiencing today is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Despite the hype, there is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and plenty of scientific rationale to support the idea that the climate sensitivity of CO2 is really zero. Mankind has yet to stop even a single weather event from happening let alone control the climate. It just a total waste of time and money trying to solve a problem that mankind does not have the power to solve especially when there are so many problems out there that need to be solved that we do have the power to solve. For example, there is our nations debt crisis. Congress needs to provide a plan for the federal government to pay off its debts.

Fighting Global Warming? In an Ice Age? The hilarity of the Democrats keeps getting more and more huge. And Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green” ideas? The only thing green about it are the dollars involved. Sequestering CO2 in our epoch of CO2 starvation is like putting a padlock on the food at a banquet held in honor of those who are starving.

One thing the Democrats seem to be consistent on is their hypocrisy and their disconnect from reality. That I was ever a Democrat remains painfully funny to me.

The stupidity just grows and grows.
What will it take to jar the thoughts of people back to normal matters?
Australia is also having a trot of the greens.

We have repeated commercials for a natural, sparkling mineral water, imported from Europe at great cost, implied to be wonderful for The Environment, ‘chemical free’ and ‘carbon neutral’.
What the hell is ‘carbon neutral’ with reference to water? What is ‘chemical free’ when the contents are all chemicals and nothing else?

We have plea after plea to be kind to the environment, to so sustainable acts, to think of younger generations, as if these were things we were not already doing.

We have a major casino, with TV commercials entreating ‘Gamble responsibly’.

It is hard to imagine enterprises so close to guilty of harm to all people green, as selling water that outgases CO2 to the air as soon as the lid is off, at a time when CO2 in the air is billed as an existential threat; and a casino, which like its constituent poker machines, simply cycles money around and around, taking a clip off the side for the management each cycle, while doing absolutely no good to any person and a lot of harm to many.

Once you see this poorly concealed guilt advertising strengthen, you know that you are witness to an enterprise it is best to avoid. Like that very noisy airliner decades ago with a huge advertising budget to sell ‘The Whispering T-jet’. When I see mention of the Pelosi ‘Climate CRISIS Committee’, when there is no crisis, I make a mental note to avoid it and its consequences as much as I can.

The current wave of belief in Global Warming and its flow-ons is nothing more than the consequence of massive advertising over many years. No advertising, no crisis. No crisis, no funds. Must buy more and more advertising and grow richer and richer. The topic, the object being sold, matters not much. It is the swaying of the minds of many that leads to large, ill-gotten gains. Geoff

If the Democrat House Representatives and their allied demonstrators make a big fuss and pass a a green energy New Deal bill, or get close to doing so, the time will be ripe for one of the TV networks to host a series of debates. I almost don’t see how they could avoid doing so, especially if the GWPF and/or a coalition of top-name scientific contrarians challenged them to do so in a public manner—e.g., with full-page ads in the NY Times and WaPo.

The first couple of debates should be about the cost-effectiveness of renewables, all things considered.

Alternatively, Fox might host a series of late-night presentations by such skeptics and post them on YouTube, inviting warmist rebuttals, and then skeptical counter-rebuttals, etc. This will focus things and at a minimum discredit a lot of the extreme warmist talking points.
