The leaders of those societies are interested in one thing – controversial topics which garner federal research grants and generate revenue for the society. They will publish anything on any topic which might be squeezed under their umbrella as long as it is a topic for which the current government is providing $$$ and text book publishers are pushing. They will make pronouncements supporting whatever position because they want government scientists to publish (they charge authors a per-page fee to publish their research) and they want those government researchers to spend money coming to their annual meetings) and they want federal agencies [e.g., USGS] purchasing VERY expensive booth space at their conferences. And text book manufacturers, who spend fortunes on exhibit space at conferences, want NEW research (good or bad) which makes last year’s texts obsolete. So there is pressure from publishers for societies to push agendas which, in turn, push new ideas, which will result in the push (at university) to push new text books. They can’t have anyone standing up and saying it’s all hooey, and not receiving an official “Shut up and sit down” order, or they will not be popular with the people who really fund those big meeting halls and buy advertising space in their journals.
Let’s not be naiive – it’s follow the money. Plain, simple, mercenary, followed by a whole host of pejorative explicatives.
This is the sort of media climate reporting data that spells very bad news for all those scientists, both pseudo and real who have jumped aboard the climate catastrophe / global warming / climate change,/ extreme weather tax payer funded gravy train and who have used the climate catastrophe meme as a personal promotion vehicle.
As the politicals in a democracy ultimately follow the dictates of their public, they also will start to run out of publicly acceptable excuses to keep on lavishly funding a dying ideology which their voters have lost interest in.
Voters, who as they become ever more aware of the real facts behind the ever changing natural climate, are viewing with rising contempt, the climate alarmist scientists and advocates involved, The lies, the deliberate data corruption, the highly selective use of data to bolster their claims and the deliberate distortions created by those same alarmist scientists and climate alarmism advocates to try and bolster their personally held ideology and to access the lavish tax payer funded grants handed out by governments driven by the fear of catastrophic climate changes, fears deliberately created by those same climate warming catastrophe scientists and alarmism advocates.
For all those climate alarmists advocates and scientists, you now have in your personal data files, a record of politically supporting and promoting a grossly misleading and increasingly corrupt climate alarmist science campaign which attempted to force the public across the world to conform with your own personal beliefs and ideology regardless of the deeply distressing and for some deadly personal costs as well as the horrendous social and financial costs that you created in promoting and advocating your own personal climate catastrophe ideology.
When it comes to your future as scientists it may be that you will find yourselves sweeping streets for a living as your record follows you for the rest of not only your professional life but also your personal life.
And that would be a fitting and just finale for your careers as scientists and those of your personal climate alarmism advocacy who quite deliberately set out to create so much despair and fear in hundreds of millions of ordinary people based on nothing more than the totally unproven outputs of some very dodgy and increasingly disreputable climate models.
Of course in this life where deserved moral justice is avoided by so many. those so called climate catastrophe promoting scientists, many of whom seemed to have the most minimal ethical and moral standards will, as is usual with those types, just try to lie and filibuster themselves out of their nefarious record and insert themselves into some other equally nefarious and corrupt so called scientific pursuit where there will be another great haul of tax payer largesse to be conned out of the politicians if they can be thoroughly frightened again by further claims of catastrophic occurrences “unless you do something in concordance with our advice” .
The climate scientists are after all just ordinary humans who are definitely no better, no smarter, just as good or just as bad, just as morally and ethically corrupt or just as ethical and moral as any other professional sector of our society.
So ,they deserve no more and no less than that applied to anybody and everybody else in any other proffession, be it lawyers, doctors, engineers, bureaucrats and etc and etc in our society for their misdeeds, deliberate and otherwise and for the often deliberately misleading and false claims and corruption while indulging in their publicly funded scientific profession and acting in their professional scientific capacity.
And that, considering the truly immense personal and social costs for society that the climate alarmist scientists created with their corrupted climate model created alarmism, would merely be the application of equality of justice for all,
The “pause” is intentional. Just ask any CAGW believer..
They need to rebrand the meme.. to much negative info exposing the lies are making it impossible to continue to sell snake oil.

By mid 2016 there will be a highly confidential meeting of key elites from the Left, mainly the Academy, but also key Democratic leadership and Press leadership, including the NYT and National Geographic. Some will send surrogates but the bottom line will be to abandon the failed Man Made Global Warming line … quietly re focusing on a NEW Crisis. The subject will change. A new and even more dangerous crisis will begin dominating news stories and scientists will be on the forefront of the new and “holy cow…Batman” assertions of doom if We do not act NOW to stop the x from taking place. The science will be presented and the DANGER given as an inevitability which only FOOLS would not believe.
My suggested crisis (not part of the “official Prophecy”) is that the mutation rate for viruses be the new villain. The evil menace that only THEY saw coming which saved the world. OH, Thank God for THEM. And without Them we’d have no internet. So just be thankful…THANKFUL.
The point is: By 2016, the writing on the wall will be too much relative to Global Warming. They will turn down the Global Warming (already changing?….Climate Change instead)….and then new reports from top scientists on X…that will quickly be turned into the REAL threat to humankind.
That’s it: Just change the subject. Blame industry and the FOOLS who won’t believe them…but WE know the world is round and the Science is settled on this….and …..and…..the Polar Bears …and…. and…

The new crisis whose deniers must be stoned has already been anointed: Sustainability.
The crisis must be man-made, so that the evil doers can be taxed into submission.
As we continue on the cooling trend, let me be the first to say that perhaps a decade from now, out of fear of a new LIA, the US government passes a spending bill for say, $100B, to construct a giant magnifying glass in space to focus the sun’s rays to melt sea ice. Meanwhile they will still be funding global warming research.
For those reading outside the US, that’s how our government works.

Ummmm…. Max Boykoff that Pielke Jr refers to happens to be a guy involved in a circular citation problem with the person at the heart of the smear of skeptic climate scientists, Ross Gelbspan. Boykoff thanked Gelbspan for his work on telling how skeptics got too much undeserved media balance around 2004, while Gelbspan thanked Boykoff for doing a study showing skeptics got too much undeserved media balance. I am not sure we are not going to see an increase in Propaganda pushed by the President to implement measures to control CO2 emissions. Today in Sweden he spent a lot of time suggesting that he will implement more such regulations and warming, soft ball questions came from complicit media.

This Labor Day weekend, Kevin Trenberth was the first speaker at the 5th annual Global General Gathering of the Triple Nine Society, (for those with IQ scores on any of several tests, that place them above 99.9% of the general population), held in downtown Denver Colorado. He included considerable actual science in his alarmist talk, as well as trotting out all the boring old lies about ocean “acidification” and so forth.
He showed the CO2 graph from Mauna Loa, and how the year-over-year upward trend in that is accelerating.
He acknowledged the “Denialists” publicity of the last 16 years of flat temperature graph–and showed it as part of a much longer trend that was still very clearly upward. Nobody called him out on anything, though I was certainly grumbling under my breath in several places. You would never suspect that 1934 is considered by many to have been the warmest year of the 20th century, nor that large fractions of critical graphs were simply made up. One graph “proved” a strong correlation between CO2 and temperatures with temperature graphs that were flat out falsified before 1970 (peaks flattened down from the 1930’s for example) and no mention of the Little Ice Age. Worse, there was no hint that the low CO2 levels before Mauna Loa were not based on actual measurement (some of the few measurements made in the 1800’s were in the 600’s ppm–comparable to recent city measurements in Arizona by the Idsos). There certainly was no mention of the step changes in temperature of the 1980s/90’s right after the number of weather stations was sharply cut.
Some years ago, I read of a psychological study that found people take 7 times as long to unlearn something as they take to learn it in the first place. Then I saw another one that said it takes 11 times. I saw that in these brilliant people. They have thoroughly learned the falsehoods of global warming, and they are not open to actual facts.
But I learned from later presentations that the world is led, not by the brightest, but by those a little above average. We can reach those people, I think.

Similarly in Germany Der Spiegel is in a leadership crisis, dropping sales and internal strife; the leftist Frankfurter Rundschau has already died and needed to be reanimated by another puppetmaster.
I’m confident though that all organs of the Western Pravda will at least survive in name; it is not too expensive for the Keynesians to make it seem like they still exist. If all else fails funnel over some taxpayer dough as to the green NGO’s.
But if the lie is really that destructive, maybe it will then kill the puppetmasters themselves. Memetic contagion.

I see that in my German engineer colleagues as well. These days I treat them like children; which works best. Don’t get angry at them, just repeat information. Point out the uncertainties on both sides. Point out the financial motivations for lying; the cui bono.
They have a blind trust in the state media and figures of authority, especially scientists – that is exactly the lever that the social engineers use; that is the reason they use scientists to spread their reality construct.
Once the trust in the state media and the government scientists is shattered, they start to think on their own.
One of the famous German cartoons of 1990 (it came out in January) shows Karl Marx, trying to look nonplussed, hands buried in his pockets, muttering “Sorry, guys, it was just a dumb idea of mine…”
