Climate Change Causes Mental Illness

Alternate title: Bill McKibben explained

I’ve had about two dozen emails wanting me to carry this from the Sydney Morning Herald:

Mental illness rise linked to climate

Erik Jensen

RATES of mental illnesses including depression and post-traumatic stress will increase as a result of climate change, a report to be released today says.

The paper, prepared for the Climate Institute, says loss of social cohesion in the wake of severe weather events related to climate change could be linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and substance abuse.

As many as one in five people reported ”emotional injury, stress and despair” in the wake of these events.

OK, well then, just a thought or two.

1. The average daily diurnal temperature variation varies greatly with location and latitude and altitude. From Wikipedia: High desert areas typically have the greatest diurnal temperature variations. Low lying, humid areas typically have the least. This explains why an area like the Snake River Plain can have high temperatures of 38°C (100°F) during a summer day, and then have lows of 5-10°C (40-50°F). At the same time, Washington D.C., which is much more humid, has temperature variations of only 8°C (15°F). Source: M. Hackworth “Weather & Climate” course notes, with prior permission

2. Moving from Boston to Tampa Florida for retirement or a job, or even a brief trip to Disney World subjects a human to a climate change from this:

Average Temperature for Boston, Massachusetts

to this:

Average Temperature for Tampa, Florida

3. The agreed upon climate change (aka “global warming”) signal over the last century is (according to GISS) is:

File:Global Temperature Anomaly 1880-2010 (Fig.A).gif

About 0.8°C or 1.44°F.

Yes that must be it, that tiny variation over 100 years, an order of magnitude or more smaller than daily and seasonal variation is what’s causing the  loss of social cohesion and making people worldwide crazy.

4. Or, random acts of severe weather for which there are no trends:

Source: NCDC - 2011 not added yet becuase it isn't a data point yet
Source: Dr. Ryan Maue, COAPS, FSU

Yep, case closed.

How many words do the Aborigines of Australia have for crap?

5. On the other hand, maybe they are looking at this the wrong way, from Voxy.co.nz in 2010:

6. By the way, this recent report from the Australian Climate Institute cited in the SMH article is old news. This is recycled crazy from 2008.

Climate change and mental health

Prabhat Kumar Chand* and Pratima Murthy

Introduction

The physical health impacts of climate change, especially infections, allergies and

respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are now well recognized. However, the mental health impact of such change, especially in Asian countries became topical after the Asian tsunami. In this article, we attempt to look at the diverse aspects of climate and mental  health: seasonal climate variation and its effect on mental health, extreme weather conditions and their psychological impact and specific climatic disasters and their consequences.

If you are not stressed and upset after severe weather hits you, then you are miraculous. It was not fun when I had 3 ft of water in my basement. But perhaps good mental health (which includes a realistic understanding that we can’t control the weather and not having fantasy expectations about life) will help you cope. People today are so sheltered and pampered that they easily fall apart at the slightest inconvenience. That is not mental illness, it is being spoiled. In India they have water running in the streets every monsoon. That’s just what happens at that time of year. And in Chicago we lose a couple of trashcans and large branches to wind every year. That’s just what happens. And every few years we get buried in unbelievable amounts of snow. We call it “winter”.

The temperature change over the last 100 years is less than the temperature range between your household thermostat turning your furnace on and turning it off. ’nuff said.

“loss of social cohesion in the wake of severe weather events related to climate change ” In my experience after a severe weather event people come together to help, far away family and friends call, and strangers even come to help after really server weather events. That strikes me as more social cohesion not less, sure beats sitting around on Facebook all day.

What with the threat of ET (Possibly) coming our way to zap us all if we don’t give the AGW crowd more money, levels of mental illness associated with ‘climate change’ do seem to be on the rise…..

I agree. A klaxon sounding loudly, constantly, 24/7, without a break, is enough to drive people on the edge, into a full blown psychosis. For the sake of our mental health, and the health of the children, grand children… please… please… stop the mindless and spurious clang clang, oooga ooga. GK

Let’s add mental illness to the partial list of things caused by Global Warming.
A partial list of things caused by global warming
Acne, Afghan poppies destroyed, African holocaust, aged deaths, poppies more potent, Africa devastated, Africa in conflict, African aid threatened, aggressive weeds, Air France crash, air pockets, air pressure changes, airport farewells virtual, airport malaria, Agulhas current, Alaskan towns slowly destroyed, Al Qaeda and Taliban Being Helped, allergy increase, allergy season longer, alligators in the Thames, Alps melting, Amazon a desert, American dream end, amphibians breeding earlier (or not), anaphylactic reactions to bee stings, ancient forests dramatically changed, animals head for the hills, animals shrink, Antarctic grass flourishes, Antarctic ice grows, Antarctic ice shrinks, Antarctic sea life at risk, anxiety treatment, algal blooms, archaeological sites threatened, Arctic bogs melt, Arctic in bloom, Arctic ice free, Arctic ice melt faster, Arctic lakes disappear, Arctic tundra lost, Arctic warming (not), a rose by any other name smells of nothing, asteroid strike risk, asthma, Atlantic less salty, Atlantic more salty, atmospheric circulation modified, attack of the killer jellyfish, avalanches reduced, avalanches increased, Baghdad snow
Plus 1,000 more
I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: “O Lord make my enemies ridiculous.” And God granted it. Voltaire

Given what Tom Pedersen says in teh Victoria Columnist:
“Tom Pedersen, Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions executive director, said it was a challenge to abandon scientific jargon and explain climate change in an understandable way to those without a scientific background. (…)
“And I hope the public and policy-makers will understand when they are being duped by those segments of society that would rather we do nothing about acting on climate change,” he said.
And the level of propaganda taxpayers are paying for:

We can indeed agree that that some mental illness must be involved… LOL

Having foreseen this cheap shot at linking in induced hysteria to climate change, I visited a professor of Mental Health. She had quite the library of books on the history of the subject. One of them had a reference to mass hysteria/madness starting in the late 1880’s that had all but disappeared by the early 1900’s. It is interesting to note that there was widespread flaps about the climate changing in the same time span. The only difference between the 2 time spans is that back then, nobody was distorting the fact that the climate was cooling.
Global Warming causes Global Cooling is just another cheap shot at inducing mass hysteria, brought to you by the makers of AGW Trend without end, Amen, aka Climate Change/ Climate Disruption/ Climate Chaos and other assorted brands of panic.

How could anyone possibly know that climate change causes people to have mental illness especially when the theory has not been proven to be true?
If anything depression and uncertainty of life can result from the stress placed on people by the taxes, regulations and in some cases dictatorial restrictions imposed by government in support of the theory. That however does not make for mental illness but it does make for a change at the next election.

The poor lad interviewing Bill McKibben and the counterpoint man on PBS last night was seen to be aghast at the ludicrous nature of what Bill was saying and body-languaging. It was bad.
Bill is someone to behold, not unlike Heidi Cullen.
I’m sure the interviewer was glad to have the counterpoint man to turn to.

As a lad it was the full moon that drove people crazy, do we get clearer skies with all this 0.8oC warming. Wow it must be very profitable to write “crap” papers. I am in the wrong game, but I have a ethical business environment to work in unlike these chaps.

Yes, I suppose it is ridiculous, on the face of it, to think that relatives or friends of any of the 40 people who were killed by Hurricane Irene will suffer anything like depression”
With all respect to those that died, how do the authorities categorise ‘hurricane’ related deaths? Just out of interest. What are the criteria for car crashes for instance? When is a skid on a normal wet road, leading to a tragic fatality, different from a skid on a wet road in a tropical storm? Another point of interest would be how many of these deaths were caused by the fear of the hurricane? People overloading cars, old guys up ladders etc. And how many deaths would there be from similar accidents over the same area/time/population. Again, just interested.

Yes, surviving a tsunami, hurricane or tornado could adversely affect your wellbeing. So what is the point they are trying to make – apart from the blinding obvious?

No, of course not. What’s ridiculous is attributing that to CO2 emissions.
