I’ve had about two dozen emails wanting me to carry this from the Sydney Morning Herald:
Mental illness rise linked to climate
Erik Jensen
RATES of mental illnesses including depression and post-traumatic stress will increase as a result of climate change, a report to be released today says.
The paper, prepared for the Climate Institute, says loss of social cohesion in the wake of severe weather events related to climate change could be linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and substance abuse.
As many as one in five people reported ”emotional injury, stress and despair” in the wake of these events.
OK, well then, just a thought or two.
1. The average daily diurnal temperature variation varies greatly with location and latitude and altitude. From Wikipedia: High desert areas typically have the greatest diurnal temperature variations. Low lying, humid areas typically have the least. This explains why an area like the Snake River Plain can have high temperatures of 38°C (100°F) during a summer day, and then have lows of 5-10°C (40-50°F). At the same time, Washington D.C., which is much more humid, has temperature variations of only 8°C (15°F). Source: M. Hackworth “Weather & Climate” course notes, with prior permission
2. Moving from Boston to Tampa Florida for retirement or a job, or even a brief trip to Disney World subjects a human to a climate change from this:

to this:

3. The agreed upon climate change (aka “global warming”) signal over the last century is (according to GISS) is:
About 0.8°C or 1.44°F.
Yes that must be it, that tiny variation over 100 years, an order of magnitude or more smaller than daily and seasonal variation is what’s causing the loss of social cohesion and making people worldwide crazy.
4. Or, random acts of severe weather for which there are no trends:
![tornadotrend[1]](http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/tornadotrend1.jpg)

Yep, case closed.
How many words do the Aborigines of Australia have for crap?
5. On the other hand, maybe they are looking at this the wrong way, from Voxy.co.nz in 2010:
6. By the way, this recent report from the Australian Climate Institute cited in the SMH article is old news. This is recycled crazy from 2008.
Climate change and mental health
Prabhat Kumar Chand* and Pratima Murthy
Introduction
The physical health impacts of climate change, especially infections, allergies and
respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are now well recognized. However, the mental health impact of such change, especially in Asian countries became topical after the Asian tsunami. In this article, we attempt to look at the diverse aspects of climate and mental health: seasonal climate variation and its effect on mental health, extreme weather conditions and their psychological impact and specific climatic disasters and their consequences.
Read the whole report from 2008 from the World Health Organization here:
Sounds familiar, there might be plagiarism afoot, better send in John Mashey. o_O

I’m not sure how many words the Aborigines of Australia have for crap, but in a recent speech the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said:
By her reasoning it seems that description applies to anyone who dares question the mind numbing incompetence of her “Looney Tunes” government.
Whether it’s her calculated lies to the Australian people days before her election last year (“there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead”) the endless spin and cover-ups surrounding her government’s trail of policy disasters, or the snake oil crafted to sell her carbon dioxide tax – one thing’s for sure Ms. Gillard certainly does not take her own advice regarding the dissemination of “crap”.
Our government funded broadcaster, the ABC, has obligingly done it’s best to assist the PM by spreading still more err…. “number twos”. This time an opportunistic attempt to link the recent “unbiased” study by the Climate Institute A Climate Of Suffering with the hysteria promoted by Obama and others surrounding hurricane Irene.
Goodness knows what level of hysteria the ABC would display if the US was to suffer another hurricane such as the one that devastated Texas on 8 September 1900, reported to have claimed as many as 12,000 lives?
As for the Climate Institute’s A Climate Of Suffering, is it any wonder that some people may now be displaying mental illness when they have been subjected to such a constant barrage of alarmist propaganda (“crap”) designed specifically to scare them witless. Particularly so in the case of the current generation of kids and young adults when it comes after 10 -15 years of brain washing at the hands of their believer teachers.
Quoting the words as Willis is wont to express:
Yep, case closed.
How many words do the Aborigines of Australia have for crap?
Yep, one word (noun) is Wara-kurna – place [Wara] of big sh*t [Ku(r)na]!
Warakurna became the title of a new founded community of Aborigines in the 80s. It is a very small Aboriginal community a few kms down the track from Giles Metereological Station, Western Australia.
Len Beadell country.
The waged staff shift between (Giles Met Station) and the Antarctic.
Snow and the [sand] dunes, there are too many adjectives and metaphors to describe these wondrous landscapes. And landscapes that were marketed as a priori and then became real term economic ventures for a few.
Plenty more descriptive terms used for the Australian cultural topology and the insertion into a meme of some economic use for the Oz could be provided.
Mental illness causes climate change belief.
There, Anthony, you had a typo and I fixed it for you!
“Climate Change” DOES cause mental illness. I’ve been depressed for years about the inability to cure AlGore. I can’t imagine how I’m to do it. If I fail all will be lost, me, you, the world, the universe, and all the alternate and mirror universes. Help! We simply must cure AlGore or all will be lost. Bada, ba da, ba da ba da ba da..
‘Collage of Psychiatrists’ (sic) hope they didn’t use sharp scissors.
Deolali transit camp was a transit camp for British troops in Deolali, India, notorious for its unpleasant environment, boredom, and the psychological problems of soldiers that passed through it. Its name is the origin of the phrase “gone doolally” or “doolally tap”, a phrase meaning to ‘lose ones mind’.[1][2] ‘Tap’ may refer to the Urdu word tap, meaning a malarial fever. (Wiki but right as far as I know)
So the madness was mainly from hanging around waiting for orders or the boat home. Warmists waiting for the world to end are probably having similar problems.

As a lot of mental illnesses are caused by bacterial or viral infections and amoebic infections affecting the brain can someone explain how getting syphilis increases with climate change?
We have had aliens, deaf fish and now mental health problems, believe me the STD units will want to get in on the wads of cash that AGW will bring. I look forward to that posting Anthony!!
As for AGW causing mental illness, we have a typical correlation/causal relationship.
No AGW is not happening but it makes me depressed that so many people of supposed intelligence believe it. I can also add paranoia to that because I am called worse than racist by Al Gore and his ilk.
If there are any mental health effects at the moment it’s because of the unnecessary hysteria, not any physically imperceptible changes. Stress from not being able to afford to pay AGW-inflated electricity and gas bills can’t help either.
I’ve noticed that one of Ove’s buddies at the Global Change Institute, a certain Prof. David Carpenter is making a presentation on 30th November at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital Education Centre.
The presentation is titled: Do environmental exposures causes ADHD?
http://gci.uq.edu.au/Events.aspx
As a teacher I’ve worked with children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Their condition is nothing to do with their ‘environmental exposure’ – it’s a mental thing and nothing to do with the weather (oops sorry, climate!)
If I didn’t live in England and I was in Australia instead, I’d love to go to the seminar and politely call-out Prof Carpenter for the absolute twaddle he’s peddling.
“In this article, we attempt to look at the diverse aspects of climate and mental health”
Yup, it’s a wonder we still exist. Luckily we’ve always had a bunch of specially abled obsessive-compulsives to keep the rest of us on our toes. Just think where we’d be if they’d kept it all to themselves.
Getting really worried about mental state of Australians in general………
The mental illness is allready here!
IThe diagnosis is called CAGW

I actually had to look up the Telegraph article to make sure they really gave the Met Office forecaster’s name correctly. I’m still not convinced The Telegraph didn’t pick this story up from The Onion.
It’s like experiencing the rebirth of the Goon Show. If only the BBC could find comedy programmes to rival this the UK would be a much happier place.
Maybe the take-away from this is climate-change fear-mongers cause mental illness.
Here’s a new angle – sue Gore, Hansen, Romm for destroying the mental health of our children. Remember, it’s “for the children.”
“The physical health impacts of climate change, especially infections, allergies and
respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are now well recognized.”
Oh, are they now? By whom? It is truly amazing the number of things the “climate change” bogeyman gets blamed for. Beats having to do actual science, I guess, and the pay is the same (probably better, because if they did that, they might be out of a job).

Yes, I suppose it is ridiculous, on the face of it, to think that relatives or friends of any of the 40 people who were killed by Hurricane Irene will suffer anything like depression.
That would be weather, not climate. Lots of Alarmists tend to get the two mixed up, though, so don’t feel bad. The Appeal to Emotion is also an illogical argument, but Alarmists and logic tend not to get along very well.
Not sure how it is spelled but the noongar tribe word for crap is guna
I can tell you that hearing the ABC daily sprout absolute rubbish on warming in almost every program has me ragingly angry and depressed,
then add idiotic Gillard and brown doing their damndest to supress the wishes of the populace and ruin our country..
people who also disagree but wont get off their lazy butts to even dial a phone to register dissent, or sign a petition to help themselves..
depressed?
yeah I am..
I have had a gutfull of idiots who wont even take the time to read, listen and learn a tiny bit about something so important, to fight back.
the above poster whi listed
fuel heating rising food prices increased rates taxes and fees and compliances..perfectly correct.
as a pensioner life is hard enough now. how I will survive if these morons get their way is beyond me.every day is a depressing battle , and getting worse.
Mike Jowsey says: August 30, 2011 at 1:27 am
No, Mike, you’ve got that all wrong. You must have failed logic. The true implication is that there is a 28% chance that an obsessive-compulsive is James Hansen.
interesting.
We used to hear
“Anthropogenic carbon dioxide causes global warming that shall lead to doom”
now its
“Climate change leads to depression and mental illness”
Both propositions as causative factors fall by their own weight.
However, there may be some slight incidental validity to the 2nd proposition, regardless of how insignificant it is.
There were several weeks of fine warm and sunny weather in London. Am I supposed to have been psychotic? Now we’re going into winter. Am I supposed to be depressed?
When spring comes next year, should I lament the loss of winter and summer, since change causes mental anguish?
This of course was funded by some guy’s private load of donated cash, which then became a tax shelter for said guy and donors. Could it be I have a case for proposing that climate change funding is taking money away from things like adequate funding for much needed infrastructure repair, needed military gear, real job creation, and education? Can I get a grant to study this?
Probably not.
I remember a woman from some years ago, definitely obsessive compulsive. She used to hang dry paper towels to reuse. Don’t know where she is today but I’m certain she’s latched on to AGW big time. She’s probably protesting outside a pepsi bottling plant right now.
In all seriousness, I feel quite sorry for such addicted persons, it is a very difficult life for them and those who love them.
I think worrying about ‘climate change’ is a mental disorder so, in my estimation, Professor Hickie has now proven it for me. Thanks Ian!
I bet it is also responsible for the heartbreak of psoriasis.
I don’t know about climate change causing more mental illness, since climate has always changed and always will. Is our climate “getting worse”? The Alarmists sure want it to be, but unfortunately for them, there’s no evidence there is, despite all their clucking about it. The CAGW/CC Belief certainly appears to be a type of mental illness, though. It is evidenced by irrationality, cult mentality, latent sociopathology characterized by a desire to harm those who don’t share your Beliefs (as in the extremely violent and gory “no Pressure” video), the idea that “the ends” (saving the planet) justify the means, a general breaking down of morality, and the tendency to lie, to name just a few.
