Al Gore’s new book had a problem – no big hurricanes since Katrina to put in the book to look “threatening” to the USA. Any imagined link between hurricanes and global warming has evaporated.
Solution: the artists airbrush.

The cover opens and closes half and half — so you only see one hurricane…as in the press release photo or the one on Amazon.
But this is the real picture sequence from the book which I looked at Borders today and took cell-phone pictures, original (before the retouching by some “artist”) Note all of the Arctic ice and the size of the Florida Peninsula…
and the final product:
WUWT?
A midget Southern Hemisphere cyclone is off the coast of Florida, another hurricane is sitting on the equator off the coast of Peru — and the Arctic Ice is gone (perhaps it is summer) and the Florida Peninsula is half gone
There are other differences I am sure you can find — but the hurricanes are just nonsense…

to scala: I suppose hurricanes spinning the wrong way “could happen” as you say. Almost anything is possible, if the polarity of the poles reversed, ocean currents shifted dramatically, etc. Thanks for playing though.

But that would be wrong thinking. We’ve already covered that, and that cover doesn’t remotely describe anything that could happen. Please do try to keep up.

I’m thinking about buying this book, on the principle that its cover was such a horrid mistake that they’ll rectify the error, and then it’ll be rare as all getout.

I like how the mountainous portion of Central America is under water, but the Yucatan Peninsula remains untouched.
Don’t you know that AGW will cause all kinds of seismic disruptions? Tall mountains will sink! Sea level peninsulas will rise! Dogs and cats fornicating! Fire raining from the skies!
What’s so laughable about that image is that would’ve been much easier to use publicly available 3D topographic data of Earth then use any 3D rendering program to enclose it with a high resolution sphere then adjust the sphere’s size to set the desired “sea level”.
Keeping to the penny-pinching thing, Blender and trueSpace 7.61 are both free 3D programs and plenty powerful enough to create a much more convincing image of “elevated sea levels” than the amateurish POS on that book cover.
For even more fun, look up how many Pacific storms there were in 1979 and the largest cyclonic storm ever observed, Typhoon Tip. Such a small name for a storm that reached almost 3,000 miles across at its peak.
I’m wondering what a “super-typoon” is, and how I can get me one of them.

And for some irony…tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live featured the “What’s Up With That” sketch. Al Gore was one of the guests, and was plugging his book.
Well, it looks like the wait-time at the panama canal has been reduced. And no more pesky passage/duty fees!
This is so funny. Clearly, the author of a book reviews and approves the jacket art. Obviously, Al Gore knows NOTHING about tropical storms, even which way they spin.
And as for his sea level adjusted surfaces, clearly the books author has no idea about geography of the planet, where mountain ranges exist, etc.

I sent this to the guy who runs the photoshopdisasters blog. I think this qualifies. I am starting to wonder if the artist that did this doesn’t believe in AGW and intentionally made it this terrible.
