Claim: Climate Change Should be Depoliticised by Convincing Everyone to Support Climate Action

Climate change should be depoliticised

July 14, 2026

Fossil fuel interests have politicised climate action and slowed the transition. A trusted, science-led expert group could help galvanise public demand for change.

Temperature records continue to be broken, and governments continue to approve new fossil fuel projects. Politicians are failing the people; it’s time for change. We need to take the politics out of the debate and get the people to demand that governments take action to minimise the climate threat. For this to happen will first require a major communications campaign.

Politicisation of climate change has become a major impediment to the world successfully addressing the climate crisis. To address this, I propose the formation of an apolitical science-based expert group to obtain community support for calls on the Australian government to align its climate and energy policies with the science. To succeed in getting effective climate action, this strategy would have to be replicated in other countries. The Australian expert group could engage globally and aim to evolve into an international organisation.

….

But there still is major support for fossil fuels. A Banking on Climate Chaos report, published in June this year, reported that the world’s largest banks pledged $906 billion to fossil fuel companies in 2025, an increase of $64 billion from 2024. This financial information adds significantly to the already strong evidence that renewable energy is not replacing fossil fuels, it is supplementing them.

The group’s first task would be a major communications campaign to present the community with the evidence about the climate crisis. People have been denied by politicians the facts about fossil fuels and are being fed disinformation by the fossil fuel lobby. This false information is being further promoted by the predominately right-wing media.

Ken, perhaps you haven’t kept up with latest developments. The evidence is that climate scientists were recently forced to admit their worst doomsday scenarios have been falsified.

RCP 8.5 is not alone. All the other climate doomsday scenarios which have been “communicated” over the years have also failed to manifest.

Your “apolitical science-based expert group” would have to do far more than communicate the same tired claims we’ve been hearing since the late 80s, when the UN issued their “10 years to save the world” warning. For starters, they’d have to dig up some convince evidence that climate change is actually a problem. Evidence more compelling than discredited computer fantasies like RCP 8.5, whose exaggerations are the basis of oh so many of the now falsified climate warnings we’ve been badgered with over the years.

As for banks pledging more for fossil fuel, that’s easy to explain. The gulf crisis has highlighted how much the world needs fossil fuel resiliency. Wind turbine or solar panel resiliency not so much.

The insanity continues with no real sign of letting up.
The press in particular seems to depend on scare stories to keep up sales.

Just convince everyone?? They can’t even convince the CC faithful to give up their ICVs and adopt EVs as their source of transportation let along give up entirely on ALL things brought to them by Petrochemicals derived from Oil and Gas exploration, extraction and refinement. If you can’t “convince” the faithful you’ll never convince the masses.

Give up the ICE and freeze in the winter as the battery froze, instead of 400 mile range one gets 100 miles as long as one uses no AC or heat. EV batteries give out in 10 years and than the car is junked as the batteries cost more than the car. Bad idea. The stockholm syndrome well off like it as that gets rid of their guilt trip from being better off.

Related to the choice of stories to publish, is the way the internet-based press handles comments to its articles. There is a Yahoo commenter who goes by “MGC” and another who’s very ‘handle’ is an explicit personal insult to another commenter, Rich; I suspect the two aggressive insulters are one and the same. The guidelines for Yahoo are very similar to MSN, and prohibit insults and attacks on other commenters. Yet, neither of these commenters are apparently moderated. Even when I have explicitly complained, nothing is done. I’ve come to believe that ‘they’ are in fact a Yahoo employee, which would explain their immunity to complaints. Formerly, the comments were temporarily deleted until supposedly reviewed by a human editor. Recently, they have stopped the temporary deletions. If the press doesn’t apply their ‘moderation’ equally to all commenters, then they are engaging in censorship unrelated to uncivil behavior.

We certainly don’t need any more independent' climate groups telling us what to do in Australia, we already have the Climate Committee, ARC, BoM, CSIRO, Dept of Climate Change, ABC, ETC Etc
These entities are all involved to some degree in the politics of climate activism, then you have the Greens, Teals, Labor and the Liberal

Yes it is – BUT, by pretending that PEOPLE(we) demand, what is forced on us for years right now by politicians,
we get the feeling/the illusion is created that it was us who asked for all of this.
(it is no slavery when we vote for slavery and calling forever voluntary work)

It’s like those fake ass revolution(of color)sold as “from the people for the people” sold as grass roots uprising that ends in tyranny – just as those NGO’s behind the uprising wanted it to happen.

The problem with his demand to get politics out of it (they shouldn’t be there in the first place),
is that he uses politics, by telling us what WE supposedly/ and therefore the government wants.

An unpolitical statement would be.

1)Segregation of politics and science.
2) Open debate – all opinions allowed
3) Open outcome.
We choose wether we want climate action and how much.
Or wether we want to abandon all kinds of climate action.

“First task…present the evidence of the climate crisis.”
Very difficult to do, as there isn’t any.

  1. Sea level rise was supposed to accelerate, but didn’t.
  2. Summer Arctic sea ice was supposed to disappear, but didn’t.
  3. Glacier National Park was supposed to lose its glaciers by 2020, but didn’t.
  4. Tipping points were supposed to tip at +1.5C, but didn’t.

And in other related news, Energiewende was supposed to save Germany, not ruin it.

It was the socialist save they are after when capitalism wilts and then they can through big government control the masses as the Marxists ordain. They have achieved the first part in nearly ruining the economy and the power of industry with it, but without resilient electric energy via `renewables’ ordinary people are suffering too much and don’t want to be saved from climate anymore with something that is turning out worse. The hip pocket nerve will serve to ruin the energy transition and climate activist’s utopia with it.

“Analysis confirms that coal power generation in China fell by 1.6% in 2025, marking the first decline in 52 years. This historic drop occurred because record-breaking additions of non-fossil energy (wind, solar, and nuclear) grew fast enough to outpace the country’s rising electricity demand….”
(Referencing Carbon Brief analysis.)

So how’s that going already?

“China’s coal-fired power generation is forecast to rebound by 1.5% to 2% in 2026, reaching approximately 5.4 trillion kWh and reversing the first decline seen in a decade.”
(Reuters sourced.)

How many times have they told us China’s coal consumption and CO2 emissions have peaked?

Whatever we do is irrelevant. Even if you believe CO2 is the flatulence of Beelzebub. Take the people’s demands to China (and India) first off. When you’ve succeeded there, come back and we’ll think about it!

Generation is falling because of the ongoing economic implosion in China. Internal investment is vanishing. Deflation is now a serious problem for the country. This results in slashing economic margins on product sales. Unsold product is piling up in warehouses. Hence, falling industrial production and energy production and consumption.

Increased renewable generation is utterly irrelevant to the scale of this ongoing economic crisis in China.

This is especially true of Australia, who is supplying China and India with coal and uranium but doesn’t want to use these resources to help our faltering economy along. They prefer to use renewables built by China to give us second class energy at great cost; one couldn’t get more more stupid than this! A once great and admired country going to pot!

The Energy Institute say

“2025 was the first year in a decade where coal consumption was flat” in China. However “China’s coal, gas and oil production all increased in 2025”.

“Despite record levels of production China was dependent on imports for 37% of its gas needs whilst also being the world’s 4th largest gas producer”

“Chinese refining capacity is the largest in the world whilst being dependent on imports for 73% of its oil”

I have come to believe that CO2 has very little effect on atmospheric abnormalities because of the lack of changes in storms, floods, droughts, humidity and so forth in the weather and climate data, mostly provided by NOAA despite almost continuous claims to the contrary by many. Drs. Happer of Princeton and Wijngaarden of York University, both atmospheric physicists, have shown why this is so by teaching that the the temperature effect of CO2 (increasing temperature) is predominantly provided by the first 20 ppm of the gas in air (good for about a 3.5C increase) and above 300 or 400 ppm, there is very little further temperature increase possible. I have never seen any refutation of their conclusions. It seems that recent temperature increases are the simple consequence of the vagaries of wind and ocean currents, cloud cover and solar output. The true believers in the harms of CO2 have chosen to simply ignore this crucial information perhaps because otherwise, they would have not jobs.

H&vW papers are sound line-by-line analyses of absorption by various greenhouse gases. Other sources including Modtran can be used to verify…. They get 3 watts for CO2 doubling. They didn’t account for the amount of water vapor increase due to the warming of the surface by that 3 watts…but there is no reason to expect it would be any more than the present 1.6 surface to TOA multiplier…so we are at 5 watts…and 1 degree is 5.4 watts at 15 C by Stephan Boltzmann equation….
You have to face reality sooner or later….a 5 watt fan (about a laptop computer cooling fan) in a 1 meter square by 70 km tall column of air that weighs 10 tons is just not going to accomplish much change in that column…especially when you can look up and see that much of the 5 watts must be expended way up at cloud level where many watts of kinetic and heat transfer activity are already happening….

There is a real problem one which will be solved one way or another in less than 100 years long before fossil fuels run out. Population in 1900 1.6 billion in 2026 8 plus billion projected by 2084 projected world 10.3 billion. Which most likely is very low. as it assumes women will leave the home and work and birth control will be used. That number is unsustainable if own wishes to not be surrounded by people and living from harvest to harvest wondering if the crops will fail. Population control must start, war or famine will control after a lot of damage, birth control is a lot less violent.

Ken Russell appears to be well informed in some respects and clueless in others.
His remark: “Temperature records continue to be broken, …”
A return by DDG Search Assist claims ” The global average surface temperature has risen by about 1.44 °C (2.60 °F)** above the 1850–1900 pre-industrial average as of 2025.
[ ** 1.44 Celsius degrees; 2.6 Fahrenheit degrees ]
Let’s just disregard possible reasons why this can occur.
Moving the average (mean) to the right (higher) drives greater probability of breaking records on the high side. There will be fewer cold records broken. There is no reason to get excited about this simple probability issue.
Russell accepts that the temperature rise is from Carbon Dioxide and that there is a climate threat. His cluelessness is astounding. 97% sure of that.

Reply to  John Hultquist
July 15, 2026 4:35 am

You really don’t have to even change the mean. They very fact that there is a probability distribution means there is a chance of an unusual temperature occurring. It may only be a 1% chance, but that does not mean it will never happen. To be earth shattering, it would need to be far outside the tails of a normal distribution.

The other part that is never discussed is that these high temperatures have no global implication whatsoever. Warmists are the first to claim that local or regional temperatures can not be extrapolated to the globe, i.e., the Little Ice Age is regional. Unless the high temperature records are occurring all over the globe on a concurrent time frame, the same argument should apply.

Don’t stop at de-politicizing the climate narrative; make sure to remove all the misinformation, distortions, exaggerations, alarmism and outright lies that have been going hand-in-glove with the entire topic. Then people will reject the issue outright because they’ll see that a warming world aided somewhat by fossil fuel use has been a more prosperous one with a steadily growing population.
