Man, 26, arrested after police launch murder investigation into Ann Widdecombe’s death

Live reporterThis afternoon, police announced they had launched a murder investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe, 78-year-old former Conservative minister turned Reform UK spokeswoman.

Later in the afternoon: Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman announced that a 26-year-old white British man was arrested on Friday afternoon on suspicion of Widdecombe’s murder, at an address in Newton Abbot – not far from Widdecombe’s home in the Haytor area in Dartmoor.
What else do we know?
Police say the murder inquiry is in its early stages, but do not consider it a terrorist incident and say there is no information at this time to suggest it is politically motivated. They’re appealing to the public for any relevant information.
Tributes have been pouring in – Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called her an “extraordinary” and “remarkable, principled woman”, while her partner in Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, Anton Du Beke, said he was “devastated”.

The following is Ann Widdecombe calling for an end to Net Zero and ULEZ on GB News in 2024.
I met Ann Widdecombe once. She wasn’t a tall woman, but her presence filled the room. Yet at the same time, she wasn’t arrogant, like a lot of senior British politicians. The lasting impression was someone motivated by a genuine and uncompromising desire to do good – a true Christian.
The police claim they have ruled out terrorism, but given serious allegations of politically motivated misconduct by British police in recent high profile cases such as the Henry Nowak murder, I’m hesitant to take anything British Police say at face value. Of course it is entirely possible that Ann’s murder was a random attack by one of the wandering violent lunatics which Britain’s revolving door justice system regularly inflicts on the public.
We have no details of the confrontation between Ann and her attacker, other than it was violent and involved multiple severe wounds, but it should be noted elderly people are especially vulnerable in high crime Britain. In Britain it is not even legal to carry pepper spray for self defence, much less a gun. Ann would have stood no chance against a man in his 20s.
My heart goes out to Ann’s family and friends in this terrible time. Let’s hope the perpetrator is dealt with as befits such an awful crime.
Update (EW): The man arrested earlier has been released without charge. According to police he is “no longer part of the investigation”.
Update (EW): News of a new arrest, this time a 28 year old man. Police are still claiming there is no terrorist motive.
The left are rejoicing at this news.
Has a single one of our resident far left idiots come here and condemned this murder?
What, the British Police are actually investigating a murder?????? I thought they spent all their time jailing people who post mean memes about the government and the Labor Party and muslims.
Careful, any deprecating comments could bring the crack macarena squad to your door..

If it wasn’t ‘politically motivated’, why drive 200 miles to kill an unknown old lady?
I’m sure there were millions of old ladies closer to the suspect’s home if it were just a bit of insanity-driven murderous hatred of elderly 44 XX citizens…..
Start from the assumption that the global Establishment doesn’t want insurgent parties in power in the UK, then identify the commissioners of murders in MI5 and MI6 and then ‘go and have a word…’
Just posted on the Telegraph.
Counter-terror police leading Ann Widdecombe investigation
Officers take over investigation after ‘new information and evidence has come to light’
Yet in the Guardian this morning they were moaning about Farage using the word premeditated, well if someone puts a wooden rod in the back of their car and drives 300 miles then what else do you call it.
British authorities now say the murder may be terrorism, no detail of cause (such as environmentalism, Iranian,……
(As different from robbery including home invasion, an ongoing problem in Canada.
Earlier they said the individual was not flagged by the Prevent program that tries to identify individuals who may be susceptible to radicalization and help them avoid it. The program trains persons like police and teachers.
Years ago there were cases of a chief poobah of mosque in Canada radicalizing young people. (I forget the mosque term for minister/priest/….)
Suspect reported seen getting into a car with a wooden pole. (I note a baseball bat is a sort of pole shape. It is a Canadian weapon of choice.)
