Fakegate Remembered: The Shame of Peter Gleick

From MasterResource

By Robert Bradley Jr.

“[Peter] Gleick’s use of deception [against the Heartland Institute] in pursuit of his cause after years of calling out climate deception has destroyed his credibility and harmed others…. That is his personal tragedy and shame…. – Andrew Revkin, New York Times, February 20, 2012)

Climategate and Michael Mann, et al.? We all remember that. Fakegate and climate crusader Peter Gleick? Not so much 14 years later. But corrupted science and politics in the cause of global warming/climate change should be understood in its darkest moments. One of those is described below by Friends of Science:

Prominent climate alarmist Peter Gleick admitted on February 20 [2012] that he stole private documents from the Heartland Institute by impersonating a board member using a fake email address. Gleick sent the Heartland documents and a forged fake document to journalists. The fake document contained statements damaging to the reputation of the Heartland Institute.

Peter Gleick is head of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security; Chairman of the American Geophysical Unit (AGU) Committee on Scientific Ethics; and a director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE). Gleick admitted he stole the private documents only after several investigators compiled evidence that Gleick was the likely forger of the fake document.

The PDF version of the fabricated document entitled Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy Memo was created February 13. It contained numerous false statements that are not supported by the real Heartland documents obtained by deception by Gleick. The fake document could only be written by someone with knowledge of the information contained within the “Budget” and “Plan” of the Heartland documents which Gleick received on February 6. But Gleick’s confession posted on February 20 claims he received the document anonymously in the mail “At the beginning of 2012”, and he stole the Heartland documents to verify the “anonymous document”.

Steve Mosher identified Peter Gleick as the likely author of the fake document only hours after it was declared to be fake.  The fake document contains Gleick’s distinctive writing style and punctuation, and includes references to Gleick, prompting Steve McIntre at Climate Audit to declare Peter Gleick as “America’s Dumbest Criminal” see here. The evidence against Gleick was compiled at Lucia’s The Blackboard blog here….

On February 20, 2012, the NCSE announced that Peter Gleick resigned as a Director of the NCSE, see here. On February 21, the AGU announced that Peter Gleick resigned on February 16 as chairperson of the AGU Task Force on Scientific Ethics, see here.

Peter Gleick’s background and claims were next reviewed by Friends of Science:

Gleick is well known for attacking the credibility of climate scientists who disagree with his opinions. On January 5, Gleick published an internet article in Forbes where he falsely claimed 2011 had an “unprecedented combinations of extreme weather events”, he criticized several climate scientists and accused Koch Industries of funding “anti-climate science groups”. (No climate skeptic is “anti-climate”.)

On January 12, James Taylor of the Heartland Institute published a Forbes article critical of Gleick’s article. Taylor asks climate alarmists to stop denying natural climate change and presenting recent climate change as unusual. He gives evidence that severe climate events are on the decline, contrary to statements in Gleick’s article, see here. In comments, Gleick requests Heartland’s donor’s list.

On January 13, Jim Lakely of Heartland invited Peter Gleick to participate in a debate at Heartland’s 28th Anniversary Benefit Dinner in August, and offered Gleick a charitable contribution of $5,000 to the charity of his choice, see here. Gleick again requests Heartland’s donor list.  On January 17, Lakely provided a list of reasons why the donor list is confidential.

On January 27, Gleick sent an email to Heartland impersonating a Heartland Director requesting “Could you please add (or have the appropriate staff member add) this personal email address to the Board mailing list for all future Board communications?”. This started a chain of emails resulting in Gleick obtaining the Heartland documents. See here.

On January 28, Gleick declined Heartland ‘s invitation to debate climate change.

In Gleick’s February 20 confession, he states “a rational public debate is desperately needed. My judgment was blinded by my frustration with the ongoing efforts often anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated to attack climate science and scientists and prevent this debate”.

The Heartland Institute had hosted six climate conferences since 2008. They invited climate alarmists to debate climate change at these conferences.

On February 20, Heartland issued a statement here. Commenting on Gleick’s remark that Heartland was preventing a debate, the statement said “This is unbelievable. Heartland has repeatedly asked for real debate on this important topic. Gleick himself was specifically invited to attend a Heartland event to debate global warming just days before he stole the documents. He turned down the invitation.”

In 2001, Peter Gleick declared “The debate is over.”, see here.

Back to the fake document:

The fake document made a number of false and outrageous statements. It falsely claimed Heartland planned a Global Warming curriculum aimed at dissuading teachers from teaching science. It falsely claimed Koch Industries provided $200,000 in 2011 to fund Heartland’s climate program. Koch actually made a $25,000 donation for health care research. See here for other false claims.

Gleick apparently believes that climate skeptic groups are well funded by the fossil fuel industry. The Heartland documents actually show that the fossil fuel industry provides insignificant funding to Heartland. Heartland receives about $7 million in annual funding and spends about one quarter of that on climate programs. Meanwhile, the World Wildlife Fund receives about $600 million and Greenpeace receives about $200 million in annual funding.

The Gleick Whitewash

The establishment whitewashed Climategate. And so Peter Gleick found his defenders then and is fully ‘rehabilitated’ now. Google his name to find many attributions of “a leading scientist, innovator, and communicator on water and climate issues” and cofounder of the Pacific Institute. Virtually nothing is mentioned about Fakegate. Just Gleick the smartest scientist in the climate/water activist room:

Dr. Gleick is a MacArthur Fellow, an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 2018 he was awarded the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization. He received his B.S. from Yale University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Gleick serves on the boards of numerous journals and organizations, and is the author or editor of many scientific papers and books, including the influential series The World’s WaterBottled and Sold: The Story Behind Our Obsession with Bottled Water; and A Twenty-First Century U.S. Water Policy. His most recent book, The Three Ages of Water: Prehistoric Past, Imperiled Present, and a Hope forthe Future, was published in 2023 by PublicAffairs/Hachette.

But go back to the time of the incident, and even the Progressive Left press was nonplussed.

New York Times: “Peter Gleick Admits to Deception in Obtaining Heartland Climate Files” (February 20, 2012)

NPRClimate Scientist Admits To Lying, Leaking Documents (February 22, 2012)

The Guardian: “Climate scientist Peter Gleick admits he leaked Heartland Institute documents” (February 20, 2012)

PBS: “Climate Expert Assumed False Identity to Obtain Documents” (February 21, 2012)

Climate Central: “Beleaguered Scientist Emerges but Is Mum on Heartland” (March 10, 2012)

Andrew Revkin, climate reporter of the New York Timesopined:

One way or the other, Gleick’s use of deception in pursuit of his cause after years of calling out climate deception has destroyed his credibility and harmed others. (Some of the released documents contain information about Heartland employees that has no bearing on the climate fight.) That is his personal tragedy and shame (and I’m sure devastating for his colleagues, friends and family).

The broader tragedy is that his decision to go to such extremes in his fight with Heartland has greatly set back any prospects of the country having the “rational public debate” that he wrote — correctly — is so desperately needed.

Michael Mann, meet Peter Gleick. Peter Gleick, meet Michael Mann.

Next year will be Year 15 of Fakegate. Stay tuned!

Good article.
With similar deception, Ben Santer ignored the 1992 IPCC prepared clauses for adoption and did a 180, claiming out of nowhere that there was indeed evidence for human influence on harmful climate change. The IPCC fell for it and it has become a major enduring belief. Shame on manipulators! Geoff S

Geoff, the wonder is why the proponents of agw in the “scientific community” never call out the likes of Gleik and Mann.

it reeks o some sort of protection racket.

At least that other closed religion – Islam – is open about its endorsement of it being ok for its adherents to lie & cheat against non-adherents.

It raises the question –
is agw modeled on Islam?

Every faith allows their Saints (St Mann) and Martyrs (Gleick) leeway and forgiveness (unrestricted absolution) of sin in the name of the cause.

Given what I am seeing from this vantage point concerning all of the UN offenses and nonsense, it does seem there is a significant influence by the Islamic Brotherhood at work behind the scenes.

Geoff,

Please keep posting about Ben Santer.
I seem to not ever be able to recall his name.

Cheers.

Sparta,
The main events are here, from 14 years ago:
Monckton responds to Skeptical Science – Watts Up With That?

My concern is the wholesale acceptance that mankind can affect climate in a significant way. IMHO, this has never been adequately researched. Much has been observed and measured in the last 14 years.

The New York Times: Science writer Andrew Revkin, via his Dot Earth blog, was far more critical. He called Gleick’s actions “devastating” to the cause of climate science and noted that Gleick’s admission “undermines the very thing he spent his career defending: scientific integrity.””

The “cause of climate science”. What an oddly un-scientific phrase.

Revkin should have said: It was devastating to the cause of saving the world from CO2. That’s what he meant.

If Climate Alarmists like Gleick didn’t have lies, they would have nothing at all.

DeSmog is partners to and is funded by SMF (Sustainable Markets Foundations)
Sustainable Markets Foundation (SMF) – InfluenceWatch

SMF has received funding from several environmentalist foundations including the MacArthur Foundation, Rockefeller Family Fund, Tides Foundation, and TomKat Charitable Trust.

ie slimy green money !!

The organization serves as a fiscal sponsor, providing grants as well as administrative support to other non-profits like 350.org, Frack Action, DeSmog.

According to its 2023 tax returns, SMF reported a revenue of $39,210,071, expenses at $30,565,908, and total assets at $44,167,374.

Not bad for a “non-profit”

The climate trough sure is DEEP, and supports many, many piggies.

SMF is also the main source of contractor payments into the mystery LLC company run by the ex-head of Greenpeace USA, where he has amassed at least $30 million so far by my count. The man is one of the two figures basically behind the false corruption accusations against Dr Willie Soon, where that particular accusation is now regularly seen across the spectrum of the U.S. “ExxonKnew” lawsuits, e.g. in the Jan 2026-filed Michigan v BP lawsuit.

Desmogblog was built on the works of Ross Gelbspan, (who never won a Pulitzer) – he’s the man who made the false accusation famous about skeptic climate scientists being paid to “reposition global warming as theory,” to so much of an extent that is is also part of the ‘core evidence’ in “ExxonKnew” lawsuits’ claims that the industry ran disinformation campaigns, e.g. in the Michigan v BP lawsuit. That memo directive was never implemented anywhere by any energy company. I have it on firsthand confirmation that the PR organization that the memo proposal was sent to ultimately tossed their copy into the trash. Al Gore claims a copy of the memo set proposal was leaked to his Senate office, but later claimed Ross Gelbspan discovered it. Gelbspan, and the two top administrators of the late 1990s Ozone Action group – whaddaya know, the same two who hurled the Exxon bribery accusation at Dr Soon almost 20 years later – never disclose where they got their copies of that memo set.

The climate trough is indeed DEEP, but the folks behind the collective “crooked skeptic scientists” accusation are just one big happy tiny little family.

Spectacular documentation of Peter Gleick’s serial unethical/illegal actions. I admire the way Google dispassionately catalogs the whole mess and the compromising actions by AGU, the Pacific Foundation, and the rest of the “Climate Alarmist Blob”.

The irony of Gleick’s position on the AGU “Ethics” panel is like Penn State investigating Michael … (oops, better not mention the “One Who Must Not Be Named”)

I lost all respect for AGU then, and assigned them to Dante’s Ninth Circle when they “invited” Gleick to speak later and continued his membership.

It’s all about “The Cause”

It was my proposal to Heartland that Gleick doctored by adding text saying the goal was to confuse teachers. Ironically the project was never completed.

I just checked the Wikipedia entry for Peter Gleick. While there is a section at the bottom about the “Heartland Institute Incident”, it is written from Gleick’s perspective and skips over the fact he committed a crime.
Here are a list on ‘honors’ that were given him AFTER the fraud. Shame on all of these institutions for sullying themselves by giving cover to a charlatan.

Gleick’s rhetoric about California’s drought in 2015 was joined by Michael Mann and pronounced dire circumstances if society did not act. Of course his drought alarms were silenced by immense saturation and full reservoirs in subsequent years.

…..”there is growing risk of unprecedented drought in the western United States driven primarily by rising temperatures, regardless of whether or not there is a clear trend in precipitation. That might sound like bad news, and certainly the trends are moving rapidly in the wrong direction. The good news, however, is that this is only one possible future. If society works to limit global warming to under 2 °C, which is still possible, then we can likely avoid committing to a brown California. California still has a chance to remain the Golden State”

Love that phrase ” … for the greater good” :

The watermelons continue to give me reason to repost Vladimir Ilyich Lenin’s quote in Max Eastman : Reflections on the Failure of Socialism :

“We must be ready to employ trickery, deceit, law-breaking, withholding and concealing truth. We can and must write in a language which sows among the masses hate, revulsion, scorn, and the like, towards those who disagree with us.”

There’s not a word in the docs from Heartland that show anything other than a desire to use their puny budget to most effectively present real science to counter this profoundly stupid attack on the molecule upon which all life is built .

Apparently Planet3.cor hasn’t lasted these 14 years .
