STEVE MILLOY: Trump Dismantles Climate-Industrial Complex

From THE DAILY CALLER

The Trump administration took a major whack at the climate-industrial complex this week. It’s a fantastic move. But another event this week spotlights the need to do more.

White House Office of Management and Budget Chief Russ Vought announced this week that the Trump administration would “be breaking up the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado.” Vought added: “This facility is one of the largest sources of climate alarmism in the country. A comprehensive review is underway and any vital activities such as weather research will be moved to another entity or location.”

The announcement put climate hoaxers into orbit.

In “Trump officials to dismantle ‘global mothership’ of climate forecasting,” the Washington Post reported: “The announcement drew outrage and concern from scientists and local lawmakers, who said it could imperil the country’s weather and climate forecasting, and appeared to take officials and employees by surprise.” (RELATED: Major Left-Leaning Group Deploys Capitol Hill ‘Climate Deniers’ Watchlist)

“If true, public safety is at risk and science is being attacked,” Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said. “Climate change is real, but the work of NCAR goes far beyond climate science. NCAR delivers data around severe weather events like fires and floods that help our country save lives and property, and prevent devastation for families,” he added.

NCAR “is quite literally our global mothership,” said the Nature Conservancy’s chief scientist. “Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet,” she added.

Beam’em up, Scotty.

While NCAR does valuable research related to weather, its climate-related work is awful. In 1970, NCAR researchers predicted that a new ice age would set in during the first third of the 21st century – i.e., right about now.

In 1979, NCAR climate legend Stephen Schneider predicted that global warming could cause the entire East Coast to be flooded within decades – i.e., right about now.

In 2009, NCAR all-star researcher Kevin Trenberth was caught in the Climategate e-mail scandal admitting to fellow climate hoaxers: “The fact is that we cannot account for the lack of warmth at the moment, and it is a travesty that we can’t.”

The good news is that the weather work NCAR does will continue. But NCAR’s always wrong, if not ridiculous, climate hoax work will be cut.

But as with other Trump administration efforts to terminate the climate hoax, fixing NCAR is not enough. Earlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its annual “Arctic Report Card,” in which it claimed (as usual) that the Arctic is heating up faster than the rest of the planet. The climate hoax-friendly media outlet, The Guardian, headlined the story as “Arctic endured year of record heat as climate scientists warn of ‘winter being redefined.”

The science problem with NOAA’s report card is that it lacks any historical perspective. We don’t have very good data on the Arctic. The Soviet Union established the first temperature station near the North Pole in 1937. But summer ice melt washed it away. The U.S. didn’t make it to the Arctic until 1952 – in a submarine. The satellite record of the Arctic didn’t begin until 1979, which was the very end of the mid-20th century cooling period and so Arctic ice was at a peak.

It started warming in the 1980s – no one knows why for sure – and Arctic sea ice extent began to shrink. Arctic sea ice extent stopped shrinking in the mid-2000s (despite huge emissions growth) and has never been close to ice-free in the summer as Al Gore predicted it would be by 2014.

Yet NOAA is still sounding the climate alarm. The White House needs to get on top of NOAA and give it the NCAR treatment: Weather, yes. Climate, no.

Al Gore has no science background and ought not be selected as a science spokesperson. On the topic, Peter Wadhams – who is a sciency guy and may be the person Gore got info from – changed the concept of “ice free” to under 1 million square kilometers. (386,102 sq, mi.) This is about the size of Egypt or twice the size of Spain. Texas is about 268,600 sq. mi.
If, or when, a headline reads the Arctic is ice free – check the numbers.

Minimum this year was 4.5 Wadhams. 🙂

iirc… That’s about half of the area of the USA.

One heck of a lot of sea ice. !!

Very nice Steve. It doesn’t matter what outfit you’re talking about if a good portion of its work is crap and dishonest it needs a drastic kick in the backside. These departments are long over due for a major overhaul and some staff must be removed.

Everyone paying attention knows that “Arctic Amplification” is real showing 3C or more warming. Although Climate Alarmists try to ignore it, most of that warming is at night and in the Winter so it stays below OC. Polar interiors remain extremely cold year-round. Seasonal melt is primarily confined to coastal areas and summer months,

Given a warming planet, the Arctic will warm faster than the Equator due to six factors:

  1. Colder air warms more than warmer air from the same amount of energy input due to the derivative of the Stefan-Boltzmann Radiation Law.
  2. Moist tropical air has a higher specific heat than dry polar air.
  3. The change in albedo—or surface reflectance—is greater in the Arctic because of the melting of highly reflective ice and snow, uncovering darker soils and tundra.
  4. Sea ice provides a layer of insulation between the unfrozen water beneath and the potentially much colder air above. Warming reduces the sea-ice coverage, which allows energy in the relatively warmer water to warm the air above it.
  5. The lack of convection at the Poles keeps the warming closer to the surface, unlike the tropics.
  6.  The evaporation of water stores energy as latent heat—that is, energy in the phase transition of water from liquid to gas—which then is transported poleward by global circulation

Nice list. However:

1. The Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation is based only on the absolute temperature of a single body of matter at a given temperature, not on a temperature difference between a radiating body and an absorbing body.

2. Although moist tropical air does have a higher specific heat than dry polar air (at a given absolute pressure), it is also true that moist tropical air has a lower density than dry polar air (at a given absolute pressure).

3. To factor in a net change in Earth’s albedo over any given area of Earth’s surface, one has to consider the effect of varying areal cloud coverage as well as varying areal surface (effective) emissivity.

4. —

5. The NH polar cell (in terms of the major vertical tropospheric air circulation patterns in Earth’s atmosphere) over the Arctic brings very cold (about -40 °C, same as -40 °F) dry air from the upper height of the troposphere down to near surface and that air then flows southward, primarily blocking any northward flow of surface weather fronts from heating “Arctic air” and surfaces.

6. At about 60 degrees N latitude, the generally southward-moving cold polar surface air mixes with warmer tropical air and rises upwards, creating a zone of low pressure called the subpolar low. This vertical convection, with the air rising to upper troposphere heights and correspondingly below freezing temperatures essentially means most water content precipitates out of the circulating air mass, thereby releasing the latent heat present in the moisture well before it begins to descend over the north pole.

There’s devils in them thar details.

Trump isn’t messing around this term. Nothing to lose. He’s going out with a bang. Over the top? Yes. Needed? Yes. Making enemies? Yes. Dismantling the AGW narrative is just a part of his efforts. “Make America Great Again” may sound like headline tripe but it’s needed to save the West from being swallowed by the Globalists.

It’s surprising that NOAA still is able to put out such nonsense 11 months after inauguration day. And if you look at the agency’s ABOUT page, you’ll see the old stuff about “differing abilities” and “bringing your whole self to work.” Apparently they may still be looking to hire those with “severe intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disabilities.” Might be a chance for some of us still!

“In 1979, NCAR climate legend Stephen Schneider predicted that global warming could cause the entire East Coast to be flooded within decades – i.e., right about now.”

Ah yes the late Stephen Schneider who famously advised that scientists had to choose between being honest and being effective activists. Sadly about 97% of them chose dishonest activism. Firing these bozos is long overdue.

Is it really “97%” or did the “97%” number come from some following his advice?

— “We need to get some broad based support, to capture the public’s imagination… So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts… Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest.” – Prof. Stephen Schneider, Stanford Professor of Climatology, lead author of many IPCC reports.”

Good riddance with GISS and NCAR. Most people have noticed by now how most “science” articles, especially those dealing with the environment, begin with headlines like “Scientists Warn”. Scientists are never paid to report good news in this field. It isn’t that the Trump Administration is engaging in Lysenkoism, it’s that the likes of GISS and NCAR have been chicken little since I was born in the 1970s.

Lysenkoism is exactly what the Climate Fascists are guilty of.

Never mind reality, their hypothesis is ‘solid.’

In the future, as I have said many times, the activists posing as scientists preaching about a “climate crisis” for the past nearly four decades will be seen as “The Lysenkos of the West.”

Because that’s what they are.

It started warming in the 1980s – no one knows why for sure – and Arctic sea ice extent began to shrink.’

This is not exactly true for a number of reasons, but the relevant sources have been well hidden.

A similar Arctic heating/ice shrink also occurred during the 30’s-40’s, as was acknowledged by IPCC AR5. Jeffrey Rodgers (“Seasonal Temperature variability over the North Atlantic Arctic”) posted some Arctic summary data from a handful of Arctic weather stations that showed similar heating / ice shrinkage ~100 years ago.

IPCC > AR5 would have you believe a process called Arctic Amplification is at work, where global warming melts holes in the arctic sea cover whose lower albedo causes them to absorb more sun, thereby amplifying the global warming / temperature increase in the arctic. But as a commenter has pointed out the T increases occur during the winter (e.g. https://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/meant80n.uk.php) so apparently has nothing to do with anthropogenic CO2 or solar insolation. Ingrid ONARHEIM  (“Loss of sea ice during winter north of Svalbard”) demonstrates this is due to a post-1980 increase in AMOC speed and temperature. During the summer the AMOC sits below ~50 m of Nordic Sea meltwaters. This increase is also what caused the switch in Arctic Multidecadal Variation from negative to positive between 1980-1995. An increase in overturning caused the AMOC increase (Zhang et al), but what caused the increase in overturning is still unknown.

Climate change has been NATURAL for 4.5 Billion years, too.

I’m on in on this move.

This may also be a way to punish Colorado for keeping Tina Peters in jail.

From the above article:

“While NCAR does valuable research related to weather, its climate-related work is awful.”

That statement needs to emblazoned in huge letters across the entryways of the buildings of NOAA/NWS, NASA, and the UN headquarters in New York.
