Team GB pay for air conditioning to make up for Paris 2024’s eco-friendly offering

Team GB have hired air conditioning units inside their Olympic village rooms after Paris organisers opted for an environmentally-friendly under-floor system as their standard cooling method.

With temperatures in Paris surpassing 30C this week, managing heat is a major performance consideration but organisers decided against the blanket installation of air conditioning for athlete buildings that will become permanent residencies after the Games.

The in-built system uses river water to pump through under-floor pipes and although this is promised to provide cool air in hot weather conditions, as well as heat during the winter, Britain, the United States and Australia are among teams who also wanted traditional air conditioning.

Paris 2024 agreed to provide temporary air conditioning units, but these must be hired from organisers through what is known as a ‘rate card’ that countries can use for numerous ‘extras’ beyond the core facilities and services.

There are more than 7,000 rooms inside the Olympic Village and around 2,500 air conditioning units have now been added on request, meaning British athletes are understood to be among a minority to enjoy the added reassurance of a cool living environment.

Team GB decided more than a year ago that air conditioning was a priority for simple performance reasons, with sleep disrupted by heat cited as a major concern to athletes. While less environmentally friendly than simply relying on the under-floor cooling system, Team GB have pointed to the temporary and multi-use nature of the air conditioning units that have been installed.

Matt Carroll, the chief executive of the Australian Olympic Committee, said that “we appreciate the concept of not having air conditioning due to the carbon footprint” but added that “this is a high-performance Games, we’re not going for a picnic”.

The Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo had appeared to rule out air conditioning as recently as March 2023, saying: “I have a lot of respect for the comfort of athletes, but I think a lot more about the survival of humanity.”

Tony Estanguet, the chief executive of Paris, 2024, said that they had “found a good compromise between offering the right temperature but also reducing our carbon emissions”.

The Paris Games is aiming to reduce its total carbon emissions to half the level of previous editions.

If Mayor Hidalgo is worried about an extra degree of heat in summer, surely the answer is more air conditioning, not less?

There is a certain level of “Let the peons sweat” in the Green Blob. Rather like the ancient Romans admiring chastity in others.

Central Heat and A/C are the only forms of Climate Control man has ever accomplished. And most likely the only Climate Control man ever will. Maintaining a livable interior climate to protect from both Summer Heat and Winter Cold is essential to athletic performance, as essential as a good night’s sleep. Any sub par heating and cooling will affect the participants of nations who aren’t proactive for their athletes benefit.

They really should test drive the systems they propose before implementing them. The mayor should have used her river water system last summer, while doing a daily five hours of cardio training at home.

Maybe the mayor wasn’t really doing five hours of cardio training at home, maybe she was practicing the newest addition to Olympic competition events: Break Dancing. Like she would introduce the event with a demonstration? I’m not brave enough to watch.

A: He visibly doesn’t have such respect; that’s a simple lie. And B:I can well believe he finds it more congenial to fret about far distant hypotheticals than to do the hard job of solving a here-and-now problem.

I am lazy too; that’s why they don’t put me in charge of stuff.

NO, you don’t think……. You “feel” like virtue-seeking !

Air-conditioning at the Olympics will make absolutely ZERO difference to future climate or weather.

Cutting fossil fuels (and nuclear in France), which provide basically everything to modern society…

… that is the way to go if you want to destroy the future for your country and its people.

NET ZERO => Destroying YOUR Future.

Cutting Nuclear is a fools errand. It’s the only CO2 free energy source that is available 24/7/365 for 98% of the year…with just 2 weeks for refueling outages

AC will not save the UK team and specially the swimmers who will have to dive in a boiling water according to UN climate top scientist Tony Guterrez.

An especially expensive Olympic style of Parisian la conneries will do nothing to change the usual four year smell of a brand that clearly lost its way, like so many other things in life, a while back.

At the limits of human achievement, small margins make all the difference.
It’s very wise of the USA, UK and Australia to gain for themselves this advantage.

I understand in-floor radiant heat, but have no idea why anyone would attempt in-floor cooling. Wouldn’t there be a massive moisture problem if the floors were cooled below the room air’s dew point?

Using river water means that temperature would be above dew point. River temperature is mostly average of day/night temperatures, while dew point is at low night temperature.
On the other side, having floor at 25C will not cool room much, as cold tends to stay down.

‘…while dew point is at low night temperature.’

The ‘dew point’ is the temperature at which water vapor in the air becomes saturated and condenses. While the formation of dew normally occurs outside at night when surface temperatures have dropped below the dew point due to radiative cooling, it can also form anywhere and anytime warm moist air contacts a surface below its dew point.

The Summer Olympics have grown to more than 11,300 competitors representing 206 nations in 2020.
“World population has reached 8 billion on November 15, 2022 according to the United Nations.”

If the mayor’s premise were correct there would be math involved in choosing how much competitors get to affect the population.

What does he have to say about air travel for competitors and spectators? How many flights does a day of AC amount to?

I’d wager that 2 weeks of A/C for 11,000 people amounts to 1 round trip airline flight from Paris to New York

The Paris Games is aiming to reduce its total carbon emissions to half the level of previous editions.

If survival of humanity is so much more important than the comfort of the athletes, then why not cancel the effin’ Olympics and cut their “carbon emissions” to zero.

Oh, yeah. Follow the money. Olympic gold has more than one meaning.

I can’t tell you how little I care about the Olympics. It’s not just the Olympics but sports in general whether professional or amateur. Politics has laid a heavy hand on all sports by that I mean government. I don’t disrespect all athletes for the most part all they want to do is compete. There are many athletes however I wouldn’t give you two cents for. They are worthless crybabies and Prima Donna’s. I don’t like them. As for the leading politicians of Paris they can take a hike, I think even less of them.
