Has the Melbourne Extinction Rebellion Protest Driven Up CO2 Emissions?

Essay by Eric Worrall

An extinction Rebellion road block on a major Melbourne access road forced commuters to wait in a queue, or use roads with lots of start / stop traffic lights.

Extinction Rebellion protesters cause traffic chaos as they block Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge at peak-hour

Climate change activists have deployed a large truck to block three lanes of the West Gate Bridge during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday morning.

Climate activists have sparked traffic chaos in Melbourne on Tuesday morning by positioning a large truck on West Gate Bridge during peak-hour.

Three protesters from Extinction Rebellion Victoria stood on top of the truck that was parked perpendicular across three West Gate Bridge lanes, with a large banner draped over the side reading “declare a climate emergency”.

Three of the five lanes on the bridge were initially closed, before another was forced to shut an hour later, forcing angry commuters to merge into one remaining lane.

The protestors were later arrested. At least one of the protestors, Deanna Coco, was previously arrested for creating an illegal road block on a major Sydney access road. She was released a year ago after a judge quashed a 15 month jail sentence on the grounds that police falsely claimed Deanna’s protest had blocked an ambulance with its lights flashing.

This time Deanna received a much lighter sentence than the 15 months she successfully appealed in New South Wales, the Victorian magistrate only sentenced her to 21 days for disrupting traffic. Deanna thinks she’s a climate suffragette, she has said so on several occasions. I’m sure the Melbourne magistrate followed the letter of the law, but I suspect Deanna staged the protest in Victoria, because weak anti-road disruption laws in Victoria mean Victoria is a soft target compared to New South Wales, which hardened its road disruption laws in 2022. I suspect Deanna and her friends will be back, targeting Melbourne commuters again, or commuters in another soft target state, either later this year or next year.

It is difficult to estimate how much additional CO2 this protest released, a lot of people probably gave up on the traffic and worked from home that day. But when you take into account all those internal combustion engines idling, 20 miles of start stop traffic either on the alternative routes or squeezing through the bottleneck on the main access road which the XR protest created, I wouldn’t be surprised if the XR protest increased Melbourne commuter CO2 emissions several times over normal levels. Of course, climate protestors triggering the release of lots of additional CO2 is nothing new.

This time, apparently, someone was forced to give birth in traffic.

Perhaps a pregnant woman missed an abortion appointment and had since decided to give birth to the baby. That would make them really sad.

Yup. Here is the video from YouTube. The woman had to give birth alongside the road. Disgusting if you ask me.

It was extremely lucky that no one died after this brainless caper by Extinction Rebellion because of an ambulance being unable to get some medical emergency victim to a hospital. These idiots are not interested in reducing CO2 emissions, they are just interested in Self Aggrandisement.

They want others to suffer. In general young people do not view climate change issues worthy of sacrifice on their part.

Interesting event, Eric. And during the whole kerfufle the Aussie patience, tolerance, sympathy/empathy, understanding and respect for officialdom, never led to a beat-down and removal of the aggressive offenders? Not sure what to make of that.

They should have brought in a tow truck and removed it quickly with the protesters still on the roof if necessary.

Pandering to these idiots with kid gloves only encourages them.

Why the police do not remove them more forcibly is an indication of how stuffed our legal system is

If they’d blocked the road to a major football match they’d have been begging the police to rescue them.

As I recall didn’t the people pull such idiots off of the top of a subway train in the UK a year or so ago?
The term “outlaw” originally meant that a criminal was declared to outside of the protection of “the law” and any citizen could take action against them without being charged with “breaking the law” themselves.
Perhaps some form of that should be brought back for such stupid stunts?

Story tip and Wednesday funny  –  BBC Verified /sarc

“”Yesterday the BBC’s “Disinformation Correspondent” Marianna Spring and Panorama revealed their top scoop: that “Donald Trump supporters have been creating and sharing AI-generated fake images of black voters to encourage African Americans to vote Republican“. Spring boasted that she had “discovered dozens of deepfakes portraying black people as supporting the former president. There’s no evidence directly linking these images to Trump’s campaign.” The revelations were enough to warrant an investigation piece and a special podcast episode…

On second glance the nefarious deepfakes may not be the conspiracy Spring was looking for. The clearly-watermarked AI images of Trump with black Americans are the creations of a joke account whose Twitter bio states: “Documenting the history of the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump (parody)“. The BBC’s disinformation team must have been horrified to learn that American voters might be duped by tweets saying “Donald Trump was in fact the 4th wise man who brought Jesus gifts after he was born“, or he was “the first person to circumnavigate the Earth” in 1522, as well as starring in Ben-Hur. Images of Trump in the WW1 trenches will be sure to swing the American public…

This comes as BBC Verify launches a new “content credentials” feature to detail whether images have had their “authenticity verified“. Judging by its track record they might want to hire some reporters to fact check their own content…””

Here’s another security threat. Tens of thousands of PLA aged Chinese men have crossed into the US through its southern border, apparently with assistance of the CCP and the Biden administration. At what point is this stopped? Is it possible to have more PLA soldiers in the US than US National Guard?

The Bidenistas have been recently exposed as bypassing the Mexican border by airlifting their thugs directly into the country from secret bases in Central/South America.

“by positioning a large truck

Your air force has a number of combat planes that could take out a large truck in seconds.
Thus, the assumption has to be that your government doesn’t want to solve these sorts of problems.

On SkyNews Australia website, a commenter Drew2.0 posted this –

“According to the June 2023 update, Australia emitted 465.2 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, which marked a 0.8 per cent increase as compared to June 2022. Energy production is the largest contributor to Australia’s carbon emissions. This is followed by transport, agriculture, and industrial processes. Specifically: energy (burning fossil fuels to produce electricity) contributed 32.6 per cent of the total emissions stationary energy (including manufacturing, mining, residential and commercial fuel use) 22.3 per cent transport 21.1 per cent agriculture 17.7 per cent fugitive emissions 10.2 per cent industrial processes 7 per cent waste 2.9 per cent”

(That adds up to 113.8%.. so nice work CSIRO)

So 465.2 million tonnes of man made Co2..

Then add naturally occurring CO2..

CO2 from Bushfires is partly absorbed by regrowth, leaving on average 36 million tonnes in the atmosphere

CO2 from rivers and lakes produces on average 82 million tonnes of CO2

So that makes it 583.2 million tonnes of CO2 coming from Australia….

Now.. what CO2 sinks does Australia have..

Change of land use typically results in around 10 million tonnes be absorbed.. but we’ll forget that as we’re clearing land for renewables.

34 million tonnes are absorbed by coastal vegetation and estuaries..

11 million tonnes are absorbed by geological weathering..

183 million tonnes by everything on the Continental shelf, plants and coral.

399 million tonnes by natural land ecosystems.. the reality is it’s more than that but we’ll go with it for now..

So all up Australia’s CO2 sinks absorb 627 million tonnes of CO2..

627 – 583.2 = A CO2 CREDIT of 43.8 Million tonnes

Making Australia Net -43,800,000 tonnes

Prove me wrong.

I have seen, but cannot find again, a CSIRO statistic stating the the Southern hemisphere in general and Oz in particular are CO2 sinks.

Would the CSIRO have removed this from their web site – highly probable

Our pollies are fond of stating our emissions but never mention the sinks and don’t seem to nderstand the meaning of ‘net’..

It is of course far more important to appear to be saving the Earth than to actually be doing something useful for the health of the environment. Wokism and radical environmental activism are all about appearance and the money that it draws to the pockets of idiots and slackers. We need to find an ice berg big enough to send them all on a cruise.

There are almost certainly “charities” funding such protests, as they have in the US and UK. Perhaps the equivalent of a RICO prosecution of both the protesters and their Green cheering squad might have an effect?

All these types of protest drive up emissions, but the protesters don’t really care because to them they’re just social events after which they just go ahead and get drunk, stoned or whatever. That’s if they’re not already in those states before the protests start. Deep down they know their efforts are hopeless, and when they’re presented with the facts that 82% of the world’s primary energy is still being provided by fossil fuels, they know for certain. But none of the above will cause them to cancel a party.
