True, Indianapolis Star, “Climate Change is not ‘Theoretical,’” but Its Connection to Extreme Weather Is

From ClimateREALISM

The Indianapolis Star (IndyStar) published a story claiming climate change is causing dangerous weather changes in Indiana. Climate change is a fact, but data shows, contrary to what is implied by the expert interviewed by the IndyStar, that neither flooding, nor hot temperatures have become more extreme or common in Indiana than they have been historically in the state.

IndyStar reporter Karl Schneider interviewed Gabe Filippelli, executive director of Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute, for his story, “Climate change not ‘theoretical, or even debatable,’ an IU expert says. What’s the solution?

“Climate change already is affecting the everyday lives of Hoosiers and experts at Indiana University are exploring potential solutions,” writes Schneider.

“We do have some significant short-term challenges and one of them is flooding,” Filippelli told Schneider. “We’re already seeing a lot more extreme rainfall events and … we’re going to see even more into the future.

“The other issue is extreme heat. We see an increase in extreme heat events globally, but also right here in Indiana …,” Filippelli continued to opine.

I say opine because the data on flooding and extreme heat in Indiana refute his claims.

Concerning extreme rainfall and flooding, data from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that Indiana’s single day record for precipitation was set in August 1905, more than 118 years of global warming ago. Also, although records do indicate the mid-western United States is receiving modestly more precipitation now on average during the present period of modest warming than it did in the early and mid-20th century, this has not led to a worsening of flooding. In fact, in its most recent report the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says it has detected no changes in flooding and that it can attribute no particular floods or patterns in floods to human caused climate change.

Concerning extreme heat, once again data from the NCEI refute Filippelli’s uncorroborated assertion that extreme heat is increasing. Indiana’s single day maximum temperature record, of 116℉ was set in 1936, 87 years of climate change ago. Indeed, more record hot temperatures in the United States were set during the dust bowl decade of the 1930s than in any other decade before or since, and far more record high temperatures for the country were set prior to 1950, before the recent period of modest warming, than have been set or tied in the past 70 years of climate change. Only six high temperature records have been set or tied since 2000 during what most alarmists call the hottest two decades on record. By contrast, 25 state maximum temperature records set in the 1930s still stand as records today.

Neither flooding nor extreme heat have worsened during the recent period of modest warming. Had Schneider checked the data, rather than relying on “expert opinion,” he could easily have established this fact and produced an accurate story, rather than one more in a long line of climate crisis scare stories.

“Climate change not ‘theoretical, or even debatable,’ an IU expert says.”

Is there an expert out there who can explain what “Climate without change” would look like?

Anyone that has lived here for 20 years or more knows that guy is FOS.

I live about 35 mi. NNE of Indy. I have my own weather station. We did not hit 100 deg. this year and have not done so for about a decade. It was damned uncomfortable because of the humidity for the last two weeks of July and the whole of August, but the temps were those of a typical summer.

Our problem this year here in this local area was we did not get enough rain during the critical time for the corn. It kept passing north or south of us. We were in a divergence zone I guess.

So corn crop isn’t going to be great around here this year. We shall see about the soya beans.

Not saying that it BUT …
If the weather IS getting more extreme and…
If this will only continue and increase in the future even with climate action…
Why exactly should we make ourselves dependent upon generation methods that are in fact, because of their nature, either dependent upon Goldilocks “Just Right” wind conditions or only functional for 4 hours per day when the sun is at the maximal angle?
Can society function with generation capacity availability of 4 hours daily?
Can society function with a lack of generation capacity availability when those extreme weather events occur?
Aren’t those extreme weather events supposed to become more commonplace in the near future?
How long will it take for a reduction of CO2 emissions to become evident in reduction of extreme weather events?
How many blackouts will occur from dependence upon Wind and Solar if FF generation is removed from the generation mix with the increase in extreme weather events predicted to occur???

The answer is, of course, 42!
However, AGW skeptics might say 97.
I’ve suggested that whenever a number is required, and none is available, use 97. If a small number fits better, use 1.5.

Yes, we want to know how he can justify putting out all those falsehoods about Indiana and the Earth’s climate in general.

September 16, 2023 8:38 pm

The executive director of Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute is not a reliable source for information on “climate change”. His career is based on the assumption that the climate is changing (for the worse of course), that it’s caused by human emissions, and that it will continue to get worse for the indefinite future, and his role is to design mitigation strategies.

Even if Filippelli had the built-in scepticism that a real scientists should have, and even if he secretly thought the the whole climate change story was a complete and fraudulent fabrication, is he going to throw away his career, his social status and his future job prospects by going public with it?

This is one illustration of the way that “progressive” thinking has permeated all of the institutions of western nations, and climate “science” is a very important part of what appears to be a movement to remake our society in some sort of authoritarian, oligarchical, neo-fascist model.

I was sounding off on climatism to my daughter yesterday, and she asked the very penetrating and rather obvious question – who is benefiting from all that obfuscation, data-mangling and falsification? If only there was an evil villain, hiding in a volcano, intent on destroying the human race, and master-minding the whole operation, we could point to him as the beneficiary of climatarianism. And we could dispatch agent 007 to take care of him. But it’s a broad-based, essentially leaderless movement that’s captured the minds of a large segment of society.

The future doesn’t look very favourable, does it?

It’s a lot like fascism and communism of the last century – good sounding, but empty or idiotic or even evil slogans to ensnare the punters but attaining power is the key and the goal of the people in charge and that’s why it seems like every politician is in on it – because they are. The green movement to save the world is like crack cocaine for the political junkies.

“The future doesn’t look very favourable, does it?”

I think the problems associated with trying to reduce CO2 are starting to become obvious to more and more people, whose gasoline and electric prices are increasing, while being warned about possible complete blackouts of their electricyt supply and the public is starting to get very restless about all of it.

We have the ability to change course, and we need to change course for the sake of all of us, and we’ll have a chance to change course soon. Let’s hope we are smart enough to see what needs to be done, which, basically, in the United States means throwing the Democrats out of political office. THEY are the problem.

And notice I didn’t limit this to radical Democrats, but to all Democrats, because even electing a moderate Democrat advances the socialist/marxist cause of the radical Democrats in Washington DC, so you can’t vote for any “good” Democrats, either.

Trump is getting stronger every day. He is ahead of Biden in the national polls now. Just think about a United States that gets back on track with Trump at the helm. That makes me feel better about the future.

The video on the IndyStar website states that “Indiana has warmed 1.2F since 1895” and on the next frame “temperatures are projected to rise about 5F to 6F by mid century”.
Sketching that out as a rough graph ‘on the back of and envelope’ shows how utterly implausible ridiculous that prediction is.

September 16, 2023 9:21 pm

“Climate change is a fact”

Is less than 2°C really climate change – is it climate change if nobody notices?

Is it climate change if the ice caps are still there in 100 years?

Is the Sahara going to be green in 100 or even 200 years, like it was 100 decades ago? The Sahara is shrinking – thank God – but it’ll still be there in a century or three.

Any careful scientist would leave it at “there has been a recent warming trend” and leave it at that. And even that isn’t complete without mentioning the problems with the basic idea of “global temperature”, nevermind how it’s actually measured.

“Any careful scientist would leave it at “there has been a recent warming trend””

And not an unprecedented warming trend at that. There are several periods in the recent past, since the Little Ice Age ended, where temperatures increase by the same magnitude as the magnitude today.

What about the “expert”? One would think that an expert would know it isn’t any warmer or wetter today than in the past. So one has to wonder why this person is telling us things that are not true, when he should know better.

I don’t know if it is lying or delusion, but it is everywhere among climate change alarmists. They ignore the facts for one reason or another.

Reply to  Tom Abbott

They ignore the facts because their livelihood depends on the lie!

It’s a Protestant pastor who researches early Church history and to his shock discovers they are all Catholic!

He’s compelled to convert but doesn’t (at least not publicly…) because his paycheck is going to disappear when he crosses “the Tiber”, as we won’t be able to instantly become a priest, if ever.

And if an ‘expert’ is surrounded by climate fanatics and the government and media constantly drone the alarm then they are probably going to suppress their doubts and go along with the “cool kids”.

Even on this site, we commentors sometimes go down the rabbit hole when discussing some mitigation technique or something else the climatically insane are recommending – we start showing that whatever they’re proposing will do nothing or little to reduce emissions – but then we shake our heads and climb out of the hole when we remind ourselves there is nothing wrong with CO2 emissions in the first place.

There are so many orders of stupid with the “CO2 causes catastrophic weather and stuff” cult.

“Climate Change” worsening extreme weather is not even a good theory speculation. Polar amplification would reduce the temperature gradient between the poles and equator thereby lessening the driving force for extreme weather.

“Climate change” is “theoretical”. More importantly, it’s not real. It’s not happening. There is no evidence for it.

Karl Schneider, writing for the Indianapolis Star, uses the term “climate change” as shorthand for rapid, catastrophic man-made global warming and its related effects. Using his meaning (not the simple, plain meaning of climate change), there is no evidence that the theory of catastrophic human-caused warming is actually happening or ever will happen.

We need to decisively refute the notion that “climate change” (the catastrophic kind) is real and stop confusing the issue by saying, well it is real (meaning actual, glacially slow, omnipresent climate change on geological time scales) but it’s not what you think. Just stop. Say it isn’t real. Refute it. You can explain all the nuances later about real climate change.

September 17, 2023 3:14 pm

“Climate change already is affecting the everyday lives of Hoosiers and experts at Indiana University are exploring potential solutions,”

Well there is some fat that can quickly be trimmed. Any public resources being expended to control the weather and/or climate should immediately be clawed back and used for things that are doable and of importance to the taxpayers who funded this nonsense.

First I was a subscriber to Indy Star for 25 years; 1993-2018. In the 1990s under management by the Pulliam family, it was a solid conservative paper. Sadly it was purchased by Gannett and the USA Today “McPaper”. Its content then became heavy with the usual USA Today feeds with an editorial page drawing upon the Amazon Post aka Washington Post. I kept the paper for years despite the above because it had a solid sports section and frankly a great comics page. I have lived in Terre Haute, IN area for 30 years and for 5 years in Central Illinois before that, and before that Michigan, Missouri and south Texas. This particular year we had but 21 days above 90F compared to a normal average of 33 days. We did have one day with a temp of 100F that was the1st such day since 201, and on that day it beat a 1936 record by 1 degreeF. As recently as 2 days ago the weather forecasts showed that historical highs had exceeded 100F here on days in the 1930s and 1959. We are fortunate to have a local TV Weatherman (Jesse Walker of WTWO NBC affiliate) who presents balanced data. My background is that of a 30 year USAF vet who has worked 40 plus years as a Federal Environmental Manager and Public Health officer. I grew up in Rye, NH in a home 1/2 mile from the Atlantic. My Uncle owned about 1/3 mile of oceanfront property andseveral hundred acres of salt water marshland. I remember my uncles construction of seawalls along his oceanside property. I am well familiar with the fact that up to the 1970s beachside construction was limited to small camp style cottages, because this is what my Uncle built and all the others along the coast. Today the area just like Florida is heavily built with expensive McMansions no doubt covered by Federal Flood insurance. One final thing is that the local NBC affiliate is located out in the midst of farmland and it always shows the 2 or so degree temperature difference between that and the small airport where I work. The airport is of course always warmer

Here’s the problem with your headline: “Climate Change” the way THEY MEAN IT (i.e., human induced by our “emissions” of some relative pittance of so-called “greenhouse gases”) IS purely hypothetical.

The first five words of the “enhanced greenhouse gas hypothesis” regarding CO2 tell the story…

“ALL OTHER THINGS HELD EQUAL…”

Since that set of conditions has never, does not, and will never exist, the notion that increasing CO2 or any other minor atmospheric gas will have a measurable effect on the Earth’s temperature IS, indeed, purely hypothetical.

If you are using the term “climate change” in the academic sense, i.e. ANY change in the climate, then the notion that “climate change” is “real” is not in dispute.

The trouble is, the phrase has been tightly bound to the fictional human induced nonsense so you have to explain what you’re talking about in order not to concede the notion that their misunderstanding of that phrase, reinforced by decades of ruthless propaganda, is “real,” which it is not.
