Greenland’s 2022-’23 Ice Coverage Well Above 1981-2010 Average Despite ‘Global Boiling’ Rhetoric

From the NoTrickZone

By Kenneth Richard

Since the early 2000s there has been no net change in the Greenland ice sheet mean annual surface temperature, as well as no net change in melt extent percentage.

Greenland’s ice coverage was, for most of this year (September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023), observed to be significantly above the long-term (1981-2010) climate average. The Greenland ice sheet didn’t even cooperate with the narrative during the “global boiling” melt months of July and August.

Greenland has been defying the narrative for decades now. After a brief, sharp warming from 1994 to the early 2000s, the mean annual land surface temperatures (LST) have been trendless since about 2003. Since 2012, Greenland has been cooling (Fang et al., 2023). Compare the colorized Greenland temperature trends lineup for 2007-2012 to the 2013-2020 period (bottom).

A trendless temperature record also manifests as non-significant change in melt extent as a percentage of surface area as well as the the mass balance for the whole ice sheet, especially from about 2005 onwards.

Other scientists have also reported Greenland warming “is not evident” (Matsumura et al., 2022) in recent decades. Instead, temperature stations document net cooling trends from 2001-2019 (Hanna et al., 2021).

Another ‘climate change catastrophe’ that has failed to materialise. Of course, someone will no doubt claim that this current trend is what would be expected from ‘climate change’…..

Climate change catastrophes failing to happen are never reported by the BBC. They report that the world is on fire and Greenland has thawed out as Al Gore predicted.

With another year showing above average accumulation, the glaciers of Greenland will have to calve an extra 4 gigatons of ice to achieve “mass balance.”

Back in 2012 Petermann Glcier calved roughly a gigaton of ice, and it was called proof of Global Warming. In the decade since Petermann Glacier has extended beyond where it was in 2012, however this extension is also seen as proof of Global Warming. Sigh.

Some of the fellows in white coats only self-identify as scientists. In fact they are fund-farmers, lowering themselves and squatting down to focus with burning intensity on the udder of a cash cow.

The whole Greenland Ice Sheet thing has been hugely overplayed. Won’t end well for the warmunists. It cannot iceberg off, because Greenland is bowl shaped and most of the ice is inside the bowl. And it mostly didn’t melt during the Eemian, when Greenland temperatures per ice cores were up to 6C high than now for thousands of years.
But there is Indisputable simple modern evidence: Glacier Girl was found buried under ~240 feet of new ice, and she emergency landed on Greenland’s southeastern ice sheet surface in 1944.

The GIS gains and loses area around the edges.

The area is now just a tiny amount down from that of the LIA, and above most of the last 8000+ years…

(Note, Briner also counts the Greenland archipelago island region.)

(Note. Labels are added for those that don’t know climate periods)

Incorrect labels added, the model results used for that graph ended in 1950.
The Greenland Ice sheet has an area of about 1.7 million sq km (about 0.2 less than shown on that graph). Over the last 20 years it has been consistently losing about 250 Gt/year.

BS.. The value you give does not include the archipelago.

Correct it does not include the archipelago but neither does Briner, he just terms it the Greenland Ice Sheet. In any case there’s not 200,000 sq km of ice sheet in the archipelago now to account for the difference.

that 250GT/year is measured using gravity based instruments over a large active magma sac.

It is meaningless.

It also represents basically NOTHING relative to the actual ice mass.

Another complete FAIL by Phil.

That doesn’t change the fact that you misrepresented the timescale of the graph. Also even though the Arctic temperature may have cooled in the 50s it has warmed up since.

Arctic is no warmer now than it was in the 1940s

That chart is a lie based on agenda cultism.

Show us where it was measured !!

There has been no warming in the Arctic this century except the 2015 El Nino spike.

The NOAA chart is nonsense.. even their own satellite data does agree.

It is a fabricated LIE.

The official definition of climate now is a 30-year period. With that definition the climate is almost always changing. Just type in “climate length in years” into Google!

The ”30 year period” as pronounced by the AMO because ”that’s the length of reliable data we had at the time” In other words, ”climate” as used in the climate ”change” narrative is utterly meaningless. This is the first and last thing to say when conversing with any and all alarmists.

And that “climate period”, at the time, just happened to start at the very bottom of the 60+ year AMO cycle that is so obvious in real measured NH temperatures.

How convenient… for propaganda. 😉

Flew over in June, took pictures of the tips of mountains barely poking out.
I know, June is early, but two weeks ago flying from calgary to Comox on vancouver island the coastal glaciers still had lots of fresh snow from last year, usually gone by then which means all of those glaciers likely grew this year.
Funny that.

“Greenland’s ice coverage was, for most of this year (September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023), observed to be significantly above the long-term (1981-2010) climate average.”

So, cooling despite Arctic warming enhancement effect of 2x Global warming anomaly rising rate! Temperature fiddling chickens are coming home to roost.

Remember, GISS permanent temperature fiddling algorithm invented by comrade Hansen in 2007 (and followed by other temperature set keepers – collusion, anyone) on the occasion of his imminent retirement. He was disappointed that the the super el Niño of 1998 didn’t set a new global average record. He was patient, expecting it to happen next year, or maybe the next…but global warming had stopped, leaving the 1930 -1945 20th century T° high stand still holding the record.

His targets were the high stand and the ensuing 35yr cooling period of “The Ice Age Cometh” 1945- 1979, two events with large temperature swings before CO² increase was significant and which which falsified the its role as “The T° Control Knob”if allowed to stand. The Godfather of Crisis Global Warming, pushed the High Stand down over half a degree, and raised the historic deep cooling up et voila. Hey, yeah, he had a lot of skin in the game! With a two decade “Dreaded Pause” in the new millennium after 1998, the triple knockout of the Theory out this brain-dead loser on life support.

Reply to  Gary Pearse
September 1, 2023 5:15 am

I think that’s a pretty good description of what happened.

Hansen thought CO2 was going to drive the temperatures up beyond the 1998, highstand, but then temperatures started cooling, instead of continuing to warm, so Hansen thought he needed to take action. As time went along he started changing his tune on the 1930’s. Before, he claimed that 1934 was 0.5C warmer than 1998, and that the decade of the 1930’s was the hottest, but when the temperatures didn’t do what he was expecting after 1998, then he changed his tune and started downplaying the hot 1930’s, because if it was just as warm in the 1930’s as it is today, and it was, then that means that CO2 has very little effect on the Earth’s temperatures since there is more CO2 in the air today than there was in the 1930’s, yet it is no warmer today than it was then.

So that’s what Hansen wanted to hide. Him, Phil Jones, and Hansen.

But, these data mannipulating charlatans could not hide the written temperature record, so there is still evidence that their data mannipulation is a Big Lie perpetrated on the public to promote the false reality that CO2 is a dangerous gas that needs regulation.

These people have caused the world to waste TRILLIONS of dollars trying to control CO2, when there is no evidence that CO2 needs to be controlled. The only “evidence” is what these charlatans made up out of whole cloth in their computers.

August 31, 2023 9:32 pm

This is not fair. Our models clearly show a downtrend. How can we convince the public that they need to hand over all their money and rights to us if nature keeps being so obstinate?
