Monday Mirthiness – Mike Mann’s Hockey Team ‘will keep those papers out somehow’

Remember the famous quote from the head of the UK Climate Research Unit, Dr. Phil Jones that was laid bare in ClimateGate?

…I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin [Trenberth] and I will keep them out somehow, even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!

Dr. Phil Jones – ClimateGate emails

These guys never learn. Josh writes on Twitter:

Mikey’ The Trick’ Mann at work…Another story about ‘scientists’ trying to bury papers and evidence they don’t like. It’s Climategate deja vu. Read about it here https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/doomed-planet/2023/08/how-science-is-done-these-days/

and here: The Climategate Gang Rides Again!

Mike Mann trashes paper

Shameless abuse of science…but then again, we know Mann has no shame, only hubris.

If the 10th circle of hell involves eternal fire

I rather like the Dickensian punishment of spending eternity wrapped in heavy chains and cash boxes.
The chains he forged through his manifold methods of lying, every additional lie is a link.
The cash boxes represent his selfish greed, years of lies for grants coupled with his parsimonious support of, well, basically everyone that doesn’t worship him.

What are the 10 trenches of the 8th circle of Hell?

The circle is subdivided into 10 separate ditches, or Bolgia, representing various types of fraud: seducers, flatterers, simonists, sorcerers, unscrupulous politicians, hypocrites, thieves, deceivers, schismatics and falsifiers.

The real problem is some of fellows these qualify for more than one trench. Some are even involved in simony.

The real question is will their penance be consecutive or concurrent?

Frankly, I can’t imagine multiple eternities of punishment. So, the punishment of multiple trenches must be concurrent.

Given the implication of eternity, one might imagine a punishment whereby the sinner is skinned then pulled to pieces, joint by joint, then reassembled only to be, much like Sisyphus, detached and reassembled in an never ending cycle. But then, I am happy to leave the punishment settlement up to God.

The full backstory is interesting. Like IPCC SREX in 2012, the new Nature paper by four Italian physicists concluded there was no evidence for increased weather extremes. Their paper was written and submitted before AR6 published. EU warmunists protested to Nature about the data based conclusions, and the lack of citing AR6. Nature went thru a long politicized process, including rejecting an offered addendum with AR6, and ultimately retracted the paper.

This is of no consequence, because meanwhile the authors wrote a new paper with their old conclusions plus responses to all the objections, and have gotten it published in another peer reviewed journal.

So not only is the result still there, but the warmunists managed to make themselves and Nature look very bad.

Josh’s cartoon ridicule is richly deserved.

If Michael Mann, da Man’s speciality field is tree ring analysis (which I don’t think it is) what’s he doing messing around with modern climatology numbers and splicing them onto his tree ring data?

Then he accuses others of working in fields they don’t have expertise in?

Has he no shame? (Rhetorical question).

Thanks bnice. It’s kind of what I was driving at. Mann represents all that’s wrong with science today.

The world was beguiled by science, but the fact is science is more often wrong than it’s right. There would be no need for experiments, peer review, journal publications etc. were it otherwise. A ‘scientist’ would simply announce his latest hypothesis as ‘The Science’ like it or lump it.

Which is pretty well what Mann does.

Mann et al used Keith Briffa’s (RIP) paleo tree rings proxies, which Briffa told Mann et al at the time were inadequate for the purposes Mann et al intended to use them (ie their Hokey Schtick paper).

They ignored Briffa (the expert) of course.

Statisticians McIntyre and McKitrick later showed how sage Briffa’s advice was.

Interestingly, Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ is a film where the villain is ‘Hugh Mann’. Dr Mann is a climate expert who realises that his scientific mission has failed and so costs humanity all hope by creating deceptive climate data for his own personal advantage.

It said that the film-makers spent months studying contemporary climatology before making that movie.

“Reprehensible behavior by journal editors in retracting a widely read climate paper (80,000 downloads) over politically inconvenient conclusions.”

This is a quote from Judith Curry in the linked source of this article. The ‘tell’ that poked a hole in the hornet’s nest of the Climate Guardsmen is the fact that 89,000 folk interested on the issue of extreme weather downloaded the paper! It was published a year ago! That such a run on this paper occurred is the real concern.

I’ll bet the the gutless owner and editorial board of this seemingly important Euro physics journal will be begging for authors to choose their journal in the future. They just insulted and pissed off the highest profile physicists in Italy because of blowback from lackluster scientific frauds through yellow journalism tabloids. It’s a world-wide mass neurosis.

I am no expert on such matters, psychololobolloxz, It’s a world-wide mass neurosis. A y is outside the main scope of my interest, but I have decided this:
When the mind is forced to believe too many mutually exclusionary lies, the brain eventually rebels, and the world view comes crashing down. This moment of enlightenment is seen as an opportunity to drug someone into financial contribution, rather than helping such a person to rebuild a more accurate world view.
Thus I don’t see our situation as mass psychosis, so much as the culmination of every public lie fighting for survival against every other public lie, and people like Mann are paid to obscure the path to sanity, i.e. a coherent world view.
We should point out to the junkies that, even though their doctor wrote a prescription for their fix, it is still an addictive psychotropic drug, and it does not change reality, just drug you into acceptance.

I think Jones’ comment was inappropriate. But the fact remains, the notion that Jones had the power to redefine the peer review process (did he even try? I’ve never seen any evidence of actions he took beyond that single email) is quite silly, in light of the fact that the papers made it into the report. The grand conspiracy rather crumbles in that cold light of day.

Even Monbiot pinged Jones for a few falsehoods in Climategate
The loss of Chinese weather station documents. A paper written in 1990 by Phil Jones, who later became the CRU head, claimed that almost all the Chinese stations whose data he was using had stayed put. This claim was used to argue that the rising temperatures in those places could not have been caused by creeping urbanisation. It later emerged that most of them had in fact moved, that many of the records of their locations had been lost, and that Jones and his co-author appear to have been reluctant to admit it.”

and again
Frustrating freedom of information requests. CRU repeatedly sought to fend off legitimate requests. In one case Jones asked another scientist to delete some emails, apparently in breach of the law. In another message, Jones recommended that a colleague at CRU should make a false claim that he had not received certain documents relating to a review for the IPCC.

Of course, Jones wasn’t trying to “keep the papers out” because he didn’t like what they had to say, he wanted to keep them out because he thought they were shoddy research. It would be appropriate to try and make your case to your other coauthors about why you think the papers shouldn’t be included, but it wouldn’t be appropriate to try and unilaterally keep them out. Of course there is no evidence of Jones having done either, apart from the single email.
