Germany’s Socialist/Green government adds more fuel to inflation…announcing it will boost the price of CO2 emissions by 10 euros a ton beginning in 2024!

According to Germany’s online Handelsblatt, the German government has moved to increase the price tom emit a ton of CO2 in 2024. The original plan was to increase the price by 5 euros a tonne, from 30 to 35 euros a ton, but now the government has decided to double that increase to 10 euros, meaning the price of emitting a ton of CO2 will be 40 euros.
That 33% increase will add to the heating and fueling bills for consumers, and further add upward pressure to the country’s already high inflation rate.
Germany’s economy is already among the weakest in the Euro Zone and high energy costs will make it all more painful for consumers. The higher price will go into effect on January 1st.
The impact of the higher price will hit the poor the hardest, who are already reeling from higher costs of living. The government is expected to take in an extra 2.3 billion euros in revenue and a total of 10.9 billion euros in 2024.
“We must act cautiously with regard to CO2 pricing, especially in view of the current weakness in growth,” said Germany’s Minister of Finance Christian Lindner.
The state says it will invest in climate-friendly projects, with billions earmarked for building renovations, industrial conversions and electric cars. For 2024, spending of 57.6 billion euros is planned, which is 21.6 billion euros more than in 2023.

Is it a new religion? Undoubtedly, when faith trumps reality
“Erdogan cited Islam as a reason for keeping interest rates low. The lira dropped to record lows before slightly recovering as Erdogan refused to budge on matters of monetary policy.
…
Mainstream economists believe the outcome of Erdogan’s Islamic-infused experiments with the currency could result in consumer inflation reaching 30% or higher in the months ahead. However, in his remarks on state television, Erdogan insisted it was Islam that guided his decision in demanding the central bank keep interest rates low.”

While inflation gallops. The faith comes before the lot of the people.

The strange thing about all this is German elites seem to harbour a deep desire a return to the days when the pay-packet was taken home in a wheelbarrow. All that for an erroneous belief. But the fact-checkers and guardians of the narrative are on it…
“The claim: Timing of ice ages, CO2 changes show CO2 isn’t driving modern climate change
Our rating: False
Climate scientists say…”

…whatever they have to. Michael Mann is breathing down their necks.
Keeping interest rates low is not the problem. Printing is the problem inflating the ‘money’ supply. That is what makes everything more expensive and kills your savings. The US and the Eu are doing exactly the same.
Turkey is not following our fiscal rules. That was my point, it is driven by the faith of islam.
Of course not. Islam is only used just like climate in the West for doing the exact same thing. Kicking the can down the road a little further.
I would say you should rethink your ideas on a faith like islam.
It really is no joke.
Good point.
What do you make of this, Tom?
To date, since January 1st 2023, there have been 1,107 Islamic attacks in 43 different countries, in which 5,775 people were killed and 3,419 were injured.
https://www.thereligionofpeace.com/attacks/attacks.aspx?Yr=2023
Yeah, it doesn’t count when those Islamic attacks are by US-trained Al Quaida /ISIS /pink beret instigators.
What everyone misses, is that all but one religion prohibits usury, and Muslims tend to see interest as usury. In RSA, they have developed an entire banking/ loan system to circumvent interest. It’s not very clever, they calculate the interest, add it to the selling price, then allow you to pay back “without interest”.
“all but one religion prohibits usury, and Muslims tend to see interest as usury”
It depends on how devout one is. Christianity’s view on usury led to the rise of the Jewish moneylenders.
“How the Church Turned Jews into Moneylenders”
https://www.jta.org/jewniverse/2012/how-the-church-turned-jews-into-moneylenders
Christianity has been infused with woke and become subservient to Gaia.
Islam hasn’t.
A.N. Atheist
As an acoitheist I don’t actually give a fig, but I just had to throw those two stones into the bush. The second bird’s gonna get it!
“acoitheist”
Whatever you define that as….
That was at least one way of wasting time.
I’m on beer break after some hard gardening.
A- coitus- theos. Geddit? I don’t give a fig, geddit?
Why not use that beer break to read up on usury?
You’ll probably learn something
Right on, mastah! While you read up on bullshit statistics on Islamic fanaticism fed to you by the oil companies using your sons and daughters as infanticidal cannon fodder to clear the camel jockeys off of the holy sands, right?
A faith is a powerful thing
As for the rest of that diatribe – most amusing.
Amusing? Like the firm belief there is no God?
Isn’t it awful when you have to explain a joke?
Especially when your explanation is even worse.
When Carl Marx wrote ‘Das Capital’ he meant the Jewish moneylenders.
The US was involved in al-queda during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, not involvement since.
I think you meant KSA. Not the Republic of South Africa.
The first one on this subthread to pay any attention to anything I said… and he gets it wrong!!!
““the German government has moved to increase the price to emit a ton of CO2 in 2024.”
Doubling down on stupid.
The detrimental consequences of doing this are easy to see. Why can’t these German politicians see it?
They have put themselves in a position where they don’t have any recourse but to double down on their anti-CO2 policies, because doing otherwise will be an admission of failure.
They can’t change course. Economic collapse will have to occur first.
The Germans have had 70+ years of programming
Germany can get away with it in the Leftist economic sense because, like all authoritarian governments they are “investing” the proceeds extracted from the hapless citizens. However, like all government “investments” that simply replace something that is already working or wasted on unneeded political boondoggles it feeds inflation and lowers citizens’ standards of living. [This is the Cliff Notes version of why people should not let their governments get away with this crap.]
German’s only chance to avoid financial collapse is the AfD.. They’ve recently nearly doubled their poll numbers so there is hope.
I remember being on holiday in Turkey in the late 1990s, exchange rate was about 500,000 lira to the pound; within a year or so it was 2 million to the pound. They then created a new lira, from memory dividing everything by a million. I hope Turkey doesn’t go through that again.
How was it to feel a millionaire ?
Those who read ‘Mein Kampf’ knew what was coming. Same goes for the ‘green’ propaganda. You know what is coming . Total destruction under dictatorship. But keep voting for these puppets.
I agree, but I feel the masses won’t wake up fully until they’re back in a cave, living a max of 40 years in enduring poverty, hunger and desolation
One way or another, people will finally understand that virtue signaling has consequences. But that won’t happen until people feel the impact of their choices. It’s my hope that New York, California, Australia and Germany all getting crushed under the weight of their foolish virtue signaling over CO2 will be a beacon for other countries and states to reign the nonsense in.
And it won’t matter if all the crash test dummies are female.
or feel female
Germany has been self-flagellating for decades, but NY, Cali and the Aussie’s “think” the results will be different for them, but we all know what THAT means.
No, the people’s utilization of piano wire and lampposts will happen long before that stage. What we are seeing from our elites is what is driving populist movements in the West.
Get ready to break out the popcorn – when Germany is forced to run its coal plants overtime to keep from freezing.
You still don’t geddit, do you? The freezing is part of the plan! The new inheritors of the land are happy to do with less, so lucky there are tons and tons of old, dry wood all over Europe, just lying around for people to sit on, or hold pretty pictures against the wall, or keeping the starlight out the cooking area…
Nah! There’s still plenty of fuel in Europe. Your new neighbours will show you how.
I hope so, never before was a really cold, long, hard winter ever needed – it’s the only way to put an end to this western peddled NWO
Meanwhile in the USA, we have Bidenflation….the old fool can barely walk and talk but he can and does produce 20% higher food prices. And, the EPA has increased exhaust standards on diesel trucks,,,,cost will be $20k per truck. This spiral of events will not end without a bang.
Bang, yes.
Higher interest rates will also eventually curtail ability of governments to service debts and immediately will change financing viability of renewable capital projects. Instead of new “clean energy” there will be less energy overall and consequently it will be more expensive.
All according to plan, Scissor. That is degrowth. When the government cannot pay its debts anymore, it will turn fully on its people with military force. And it will write new laws to empower itself and reduce individual freedom. Then suffering and starvation will rise as we revert to cave man style living.
We’ve moved past that old fashioned economics here in the U.S; we simply increase the national debt; increasing taxes and paying higher interest rates for (RE) Ruinous Energy) is “so last year” (except higher interest rates to service the national debt that will never be repaid).
I believe Joe to be like Greta – just a front for nefarious malfeasant puppeteers
No, Joe is breaking laws and no one twisted his arm to run for office and he is doing great damage whereas Greta is just a small sideshow.
was a small sideshow.
Please note that the inflation rate published in the US is the “core inflation rate”. It doesn’t count the inflation in the costs of food, fuel or housing. Pretty useless number, actually. But it keeps the masses from noticing what is going on, until they go to the gas station, or refill the home-heating fuel tank (or pay the monthly natural gas bill), or go to the food store, or see the rent go up, again. But they don’t seem to make the connection.
Socialists never could manage an economy. Trouble is, the UK Conservatives are proving to be little better…
They are not conservatives, even with a small c
Be fair, The UK Conservative MPs are mostly Green LibDem infiltraitors (Sic) and are doing a great job.
You misspelled ‘infiltraitors.”
But then, maybe you didn’t. 🙂
No government can manage an economy. Central planning destroys everything it touches.
In English: We will tax the poor to subsidise new toys for the not-poor.
Even that graph is borderline fraudulent. “inflation rate compared to previous year” allows you to make a 9% increase look like just over eight. Or what the hey does that axis measure?
As alarming in Germany is talk of banning the AfD party, currently polling above 20%, so above the governing Social Democrats but below the Christian Democrats.
You mean the far right AfD party. That’s the party on the far right. It’s on the far right because it has far right people and far right policies. It is evil because it’s far right.
Far right.
Far right.
Far right.
I had a look at the AfD manifesto, and it’s actually advocating a fairly direct democracy:
“The AfD advocates the introduction of referenda in Germany based on the Swiss model. The German people should have the right to vote on laws made by Parliament.”
and
“The German electorate is just as qualified as their Swiss counterparts to vote directly and without curtailment on any topic. A natural limitation is constituted by principles of international law.”.
https://www.afd.de/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/2017-04-12_afd-grundsatzprogramm-englisch_web.pdf
So it’s not like they are wanting to throw Germany into chaos, they just want it to be more like Switzerland.
Is the Swiss system so terrible that the AfD should be banned? I think the Swiss people might have something interesting to say about that.
The beginning middle and end of the argument are –
Far right.
Far right.
Far right.
Not very logical. Not very thoughtful. Not very meaningful. But if it’s all you’ve got then you just have to keep repeating it.
Which they do. Endlessly.
More democracy is not what the elites have in mind.
Quite the opposite.
What, more referendums???
Don’t you know that that is the root cause of all the ailments suffered by the EU – all the fault of the UK with our Brexit referendum, which was of course stolen as a result of all the dreadful lies told by all of us Deplorables. Of course, that could NEVER have happened in Democratic USA, where all public votes are scrupulously fair.
Not far right, just always right
But who are the Far Right. They can’t be Fascist or Nazis because those are the Far Left.
In Europe, anyone to the right of Marx is considered “far right”.
There is no “right” in Europe. Instead it is “far right” or “extreme right” which is what they mean by “far right”.
The left wants to portray anyone who doesn’t think like them as being extremists. The truth is the left is the one made up of extremists. Look at how their extreme policies are destroying the EU. It’s not the right doing that.
That’s what they do, take out the resistance – the West is becoming wild again, full of dodge cities and dodgy leaders
What country in the world is desirable now? I would consider moving to Switzerland but it’s not my language or culture and the Swiss are strict on who can become a citizen?
“What country in the world is desirable now?”
Right now?
The Falkland islands.
Not a country….and what if “islam” appeared there?
China – an abundance of affordable fossil fuel energy and less authoritarianism than most western nations
Strange how the Germans now speak fluent Double Dutch! Ever upward and onward for the EUrinal; time, however, for EUthanasia.
It’s all about the money, nothing else
Make money from Carbon, make money by ripping off consumers, make money by foisting nut zero tat on citizens, make money by throwing never ending taxpayer subsidies at renewables, make money by renting out your nations seabed to offshore wind developers, make money by demanding more subsidies for your useless, engineeringly incompetent green connery, make money by increasing green taxes and levies, make money by fleecing already struggling consumers, make money by spreading climate alarmist deceit and misinformation, make money by censoring opponents, make money by creating studies and tweaking data to peddle the climate alarmist narrative, make money by producing biased reports for the grants, make money by indoctrinating kids in schools and universities, etc etc
Of course, the only people making that money are western leaders, quangos, activists, NGOs, climate alarmism researchers, green energy and the hypocritical elites, assisted by their army of brainwashed useful idiots

If your useless, intermittent renewables won’t supply the people what they want, then curtail and control what the people can use – DSR is a white flag of surrender, the renewables experiment has failed, all hail the green god of dystopia
https://www.dutchnews.nl/2023/08/vandebron-to-charge-customers-fees-for-surplus-solar-power/
The company’s 70,000 solar panel clients face a bill of between a few euros and €46 a month from August, making the company the first Dutch energy firm to introduce such charges.
“Dutch households produced at least 46% more solar power in 2022 than in 2021… but this growth brings challenges with it, such as higher costs,” the company said on its website.
Marxism is a religion masquerading as a political philosophy, while Islam is a political philosophy masquerading as a religion.
Yes, well artificially raising costs to create scarcity is the main tool. They just have to camouflage it with subsidies and new energy efficiency mandates to “save you money” that cost more.
As I get older my observations of what ‘the state” actually does out here in “The Real World” (TM) only make me ever more cynical.
Question : How can you tell when politicians [ / civil servants (UK) / administration bureaucrats (US) / “state” functionaries in general ] are lying ?
Answer : Their lips are moving.
It’s too bad the Germany has not understood the following quote, which is most often misattributed to one of its citizens:
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
— frequently misattributed to Albert Einstein
(see https://quoteinvestigator.com/2017/03/23/same/ )
As to the particular article above, Germany is not just continuing its failed Energiewende policy year after year, but is now somewhat “doubling down” on its associated ruinous path of taxation.
That’s right, Germany . . . show us by example how “green energy” will destroy civilization in order to save it.
What’s happening in Germany isn’t inflation. The meaningless carbon emission charges are a tax. Taxes aren’t inflationary, they take money out of the economy in the sense that taxpayers no longer have that money to make purchases. The government has it, and they, too, will spend it, consumers won’t. Inflation is always the addition of money into the economy. Modern governments needn’t even print fiat money, it’s enpixelated with a keystroke.
That does not mean Germany and the rest of the Eu have not a huge inflation problem. The ECB just like the Federal Reserve have been printing like if there was no tomorrow. The result is what we see today in higher prices and destruction of the purchasing power of the fiat Euro (and dollar).
Deutschland Untergang….
The German Traffic Light Coalition has a problem bordering on EPIC.
Germany has to pay the US for extremely expensive LNG after the US’ NATO bombed the NordStream cheap gas supply. On top of that $100 billion more for Defense – i.e. Ukraine and the MIC. Ukraine Reconstruction estimated at $800 billion – bill for sure to land at Berlin’s desk.
So let insanity rock! – TAX CO2 MORE to pay for the LNG, and War.
One must admit – pure GENIUS, for a vassal.
Voters cannot comprehend such GENIUS, sheer BRILLIANCE! What ingratitude!
