Greenland’s Ice Melts Thanks To Global Boiling!

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

One of the babies at the Mail, who claims to be a “Science & Technology Reporter” has fallen hook, line and sinker for this latest dishonest propaganda from NASA:

Shocking before and after photos reveal just how much the Greenland Ice Sheet melted during the ‘hottest month ever recorded on Earth’.

Taken on June 14, the first image snapped by a US satellite shows the Greenland Ice Sheet just before baking summer temperatures took hold.

Meanwhile, the second image from July 24 shows the same region with substantially less snow cover and patches of ‘dirty’ ice where impurities have become exposed.

According to scientists, snow falls on the Greenland Ice Sheet every winter and acts as a protective layer for the glacier ice underneath during the summer.

But experts say hotter summer temperatures are reducing the amount of snow cover and leaving the ice more prone to melting – contributing to sea level rises.

Before & After

A clue for Mr Chadwick – snow falls in winter on Greenland, and in summer it melts. If it did not melt, the ice cap would grow every year.

By the time we get to winter, all of that area in the image will be covered with snow again.

Every summer the Greenland ice cap loses approximately 200 Gt, and this summer is no different.

In fact, the snow melt began much later than normal, thanks to a cold, snowy June. As a consequence, the Surface Mass Balance of the ice cap is greater than average.

Maybe in future the Mail might find a reporter who actually understands these things to write articles on Greenland’s ice cap.

One of the key skills to learning to co-exist with sociopaths is to never accept what they say at face value. To butcher a Reagan quote; “Never trust, always verify!”

What an excellent article! Thank you, Paul Homewood.

So-called “reporter” Jonathan Chadwick, MailOnline, and NASA assertions of massive Greenland ice sheet melting due to the ‘hottest month ever recorded on Earth” utterly falsified by a simple graph of Greenland ice sheet mass comparing 2022-2023 to a 30-year mean, as well as the out-of-the-ordinary melting of 2011-2012.

This has to be one of the most concise, clear-cut takedown articles ever published at WUWT.

That record breaking loss year isn’t balanced by the highest gain year.

“That record breaking loss year isn’t balanced by the highest gain year.”

Ben, I’m afraid you’re going to have to explain that comment.

I, for one, cannot say that any one of the years that together comprise the grey areas above and below the 1981-2010 mean line did not integrate to provide excess Ice mass above the mean that would be equivalent to or greater than integration of the 2011-2102 (red) curve shows deficient of mass below the mean . . . those other individual years are simply not plotted.

Furthermore, the grey area (and the individual yearly curves it encompasses) does not include years beyond 2010. All subsequent years, excluding 2011-2012 and 2022-2023 (to date) plotted lines, are not represented in the referenced graph. Thus, it is simply not possible to conclude the 2011-2012 year of low integrated ice mass balance has not been offset by a “highest gain year”.

A Clue for Paul – If it did not melt, the ice cap would grow every year.

How are we reading this Greenland ACC-SMB chart so wrong.
Every year September 1 starts at Zero (0)
Every year shown and even the Mean (1981-2010) shows more than 0 and 2017 thru current year has gain of 175 to 540 GT by August 31.

Where is the loss?

And they are going ape over Greenland ice cap loses approximately 200 Gt. But couple of years ago Greenland ice mass balance data (from Ringot and Kanagaratnam, 2006) listed total volume of Greenland’s ice sheet is about 2,900,000 km3. (1 km^3 is equal to 1 GTon). So we are fretting over 0.0069% of the total volume???

I can only speak for myself and state that I read the Greenland Acc. SMB (I interpreted that to be an abbreviation for “accumulated surface mass balance” to be a plot of the yearly “anomaly-over-time” when referenced to a baselined zero starting point defined by the TOTAL surface mass that exists at September 1 of every year.

I had no problems with this graph not attempting to track the change in Greenland’s total ice mass over the stated intervals because, as you point out, doing so would have meant trying to plot miniscule absolute percentage changes and would have made distinguishing year-to-year variations very difficult.

To answer you question directly: the “loss” referred to is in relationship to any year in which the annual curve of SMB integrates to have less value that integration of the 1981–2010 mean curve has as its value. The “loss” is relative to the established baseline mean on purely a year-to-year comparison.

To find the decline (or perhaps it would be an increase?) in total Greenland surface ice mass over the period of 1981 to 2023 would require more information than is available in the presented graph . . . as I previously noted, all but two of the years between 2010 and 2023 are not represented at all.

Thanks to Google translate, a “Story Tip”.

When people take actual measurements, they find as little as 100 times less plastic in the oceans than previously thought. link One thing the story highlights is the amount of wild ass guessing when it comes to ocean plastic. Quelle surprise!

I stumbled across the story on ukrinform.ua. link For whatever reason, the story seems to now be hidden from view, although it apparently still exists if you have the link.

I believe the various experts here, should you take care to check the reported science, will find observational science already knows that the greatest rate of accumulation of the Greenland ice sheet over the last ice age cycle was during the warmer than now Holocene optimum period of this interglacial, when it must be presumed precipitation levels in the warmer winters were higher compared to losses in the summer.

This is a fact of record. The net loss effect applies to the current neo glacial cooling conditions. As we descend into the neo glacial phase of the ice age the balance will return in favour of accumulation, at a much lower rates than applied in the Holocene optimum, because the GUlf Stream is colder so less snow, at rates similar to that during last glacial phase, between the Eemian and Holocene interglacials.

During the Eemian interglacial period, aux contraire, it became so warm, 4 degrees warmer than this interglacial on Greenland, that most of the Greenland ice cap DID melt. This has been demonstrated by the radar studies of the ice sheet ,and also the ice cores themselves.

POINT: Ice level change is not linear, nor intuitive, and varies in both directions over narrow ranges according to the particular temperature, but is explainable – except to an idiot with no capacity to understand such complex scientific reality, such as our morin journalist. You can’t fix stupid. Never let the facts get in the way of a good scare story. etc, Easy for them, because they don’t know any.

The media are mostly stupid arts graduates with no grasp of science, those that have half a grasp deliberately fabricate most of what they report as climate science, obviously the case because they could check the observations that very clearly reveal their lies, but prefer not to and either make it up, or don’t check what they are told.

In climate science, and in reporting its priests reading of climate scriptures, fabrication and deliberate lies are the MSM’s default option, not a surprise. B

Actually Homewood is the one who needs to get his facts straight. For a start it snows through the summer in Greenland, yesterday for example snow fell in NW Greenland.
From his source: “The map illustrates how the surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet gains and loses mass on a daily basis. This difference between snowfall and runoff is known as the SURFACE mass balance It is always positive over the course of a year as not all fallen snow runs off the ice sheet again”.
The snowmelt did not begin “much later than normal” it was about average through June, however in July it reached record values, see today’s page from the polarportal:
MELTA_combine_SM_EN_20230806.png

Here’s the Freya glacier in early July, plenty of snow:
Here it is on 31st July, not much snow left:

Every year the Greenland Ice sheet loses about 200Gt, not the same as SMB loss during the summer.

The Ice Cream Truck owners in New York City are not receiving this news very well.

One Ice Cream Truck owner asked how he was going to use solar panels when his truck is parked in the Concrete Jungle of New York City. He said he didn’t think the politicians had thought everything through to the end.

Have they ever? This goes double, if not triple, for politicians from large cities.

A clue for Mr Chadwick – snow falls in winter on Greenland, and in summer it melts.

And a clue for you too. Greenland’s summer snow cover has greatly increased in the 21st century with respect to the last decades of the 20th century. So snow falls on Greenland in winter and in summer, and more is falling in summers over the past two and a half decades.

August 7, 2023 3:03 pm

East Asia will be the place for snow this coming fall. The amount of atmospheric moisture over the northwestern Pacific, China and India is impressive.

SMB (Surface Mass Balance) is not the whole story of mass balance of Greenland’s ice sheet. SMB does not include the ice sheet losing mass at its edge. Please see:

Every year listed and the entire average range is a net increase in the total Ice Sheet, EVERY YEAR…it finished the whole year with more Ice than it started with. Every year listed deposited more ice than ice melted.
