And this is just the beginning, insists McGuire, who is emeritus professor of geophysical and climate hazards at University College London. As he makes clear in his uncompromising depiction of the coming climatic catastrophe, we have – for far too long – ignored explicit warnings that rising carbon emissions are dangerously heating the Earth. Now we are going to pay the price for our complacence in the form of storms, floods, droughts and heatwaves that will easily surpass current extremes.
The crucial point, he argues, is that there is now no chance of us avoiding a perilous, all-pervasive climate breakdown. We have passed the point of no return and can expect a future in which lethal heatwaves and temperatures in excess of 50C (120F) are common in the tropics; where summers at temperate latitudes will invariably be baking hot, and where our oceans are destined to become warm and acidic. “A child born in 2020 will face a far more hostile world that its grandparents did,” McGuire insists.
In this respect, the volcanologist, who was also a member of the UK government’s Natural Hazard Working Group, takes an extreme position. Most other climate experts still maintain we have time left, although not very much, to bring about meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. A rapid drive to net zero and the halting of global warming is still within our grasp, they say.
Such claims are dismissed by McGuire. “I know a lot of people working in climate science who say one thing in public but a very different thing in private. In confidence, they are all much more scared about the future we face, but they won’t admit that in public. I call this climate appeasement and I believe it only makes things worse. The world needs to know how bad things are going to get before we can hope to start to tackle the crisis.”

As to the reason for the world’s tragically tardy response, McGuire blames a “conspiracy of ignorance, inertia, poor governance, and obfuscation and lies by climate change deniers that has ensured that we have sleepwalked to within less than half a degree of the dangerous 1.5C climate change guardrail. Soon, barring some sort of miracle, we will crash through it.”

I have to admire Bill McGuire’s climate propaganda innovation – he’s solved the problem of upping the ante beyond certain doom.
This was a real challenge for greens, how do you make climate change seem even scarier than “near certain doom, but we have a sliver of hope”? Bills solution is, we’re certainly doomed, but we need to work to avoid that doom, even though doom is inevitable.
When the economy crashes due to suckups catering to climate zealots, all those pitchforks and torches will cause pollution.
How much pollution did burning the Presidential Mansion in Sri Lanka cause? They went full Green, even to banning artificial fertilizer, and had the inevitable result.
Someplace in the “Climate Gate” emails someone wrote that if it all turns out to not be true, they are going to come after us with pitchforks and torches.
That would imply that these bureaucrats who peddle this propaganda actually believed themselves and I find that to be the most skeptical aspect of the East Anglia Uni correspondence. What is the most alarming aspect of the emails is that if you google Climate Gate today Google returns disclaimer articles from factcheck.org, the guardian et.al. “pooh poohing” the emails, disarming them as false evidence of conspiracy in essence defending, with disinformation and out right lies, the Climate Research Unit while damning the whistleblowers who would be held up as heroes if they were exposing some right of center political sins.

The solution to the XR road blocking lunacy is for climate sceptics to match them one for one.
At every XR demo. sceptics pitch up and employ precisely the same tactics, side by side with the activist’s.
They glue themselves to the road, or just sit there with their counterparts waiting to be removed by the police.

Use them as a speed hump. it will only take one or two incidents where they are actually run over to stop it. But perhaps a trifle drastic. My personal preference is to remove enough of the demonstrators to let the traffic through, then hose the others off constantly them leaving them to dry on the road. He should read the IPCC 1.5 degree report. It predicts the damage at 1.5 (actually 0.5 from now) and 2.0 degrees C of warming and neither is all that much. And even that is just model driven nonsense.

Think of it this way: The Earth gets energy from the Sun, the surface of which is many thousands of Kelvins, and rejects energy to space, with its temperature around zero Kelvin, At any one time, the surface temperature on the Earth ranges from 230K to 310K! That’s an 80K spread, balanced around the freezing point of water, to which life on Earth is well adapted. And the CACC crowd is in a frenzy that sometime in the future, the temperature somewhere on Earth might increase 0.5 to 1.0K? Rounding error, anyone?
Close to +1.5 degrees C. was already reached twice, in April 1998 and in February 2016, during the peak heat month of two unusually large El Nino Pacific Ocean heat releases.

Tragically tardy response, says the prof? Can you imagine what things would be like now if we’d all been a bit less tardy and done what Germany have done to its electricity grid, and what Sri Lanka did to their farming?
We’re seeing signs that other countries are desperately trying to catch up though, (near blackouts in Aus, Netherlands, Canada and Ireland trying to nobble their farming sectors by banning fertiliser use, NZ farming getting hammered by government), so maybe it won’t be too long before we get to see the fruits of our efforts.
Of course, none of it will have the slightest impact on the climate.
Actually, I’d be interested to hear from somebody about how much we’ve ‘invested’ in fixing climate change to date, and how much effect it’s had on the climate so far. We might be able to extrapolate out and get an idea of how much more money we need to ‘invest’ to get the job done.

As a scientist and a grandfather who has a granddaughter born in 2020… I think this guy is full of it. I remember the 60s,70s,80s, 90s shady diatribes from nut jobs like him. No thanks I don’t think we are past any tipping point. And think the climate and pollution has gotten better. Of course zpg, peak oil, ice, desert, and water world prediction are drug dreams.

I started reading WUWT around 2008. I remember a similar “It’s already too late so we must act now!” exhortation from one of the High Priests of The Church of Climadisaterology, though I can’t remember which one.
Anyhow, in comments there were several who pointed out that if we are doomed, why are we wasting time and money fighting CAGW? Why don’t we just use the money and party until the end? That’s a sensible position.
Since then there have been quite a few more of those we-are-doomed-it’s-too-late-now declarations with the usual conclusion that therefore, we must spend and do even more.

Nobody who lives where the temperature just reached 40C for the first time ever has any business talking about extreme heatwaves. Where I live in Wisconsin most all of our record highs were above 40 C and by far the most were set between July 9 and 15, 1936. We’ve only had two significant heat waves since 2000 (2006 and 2012) and neither lasted more than 2 days.
Alarmists keep claiming that the negative effects of CAGW are now clearly apparent, but I have seen exactly zero hard evidence that this is true. Every claim they make about some weather event being evidence falls to pieces on the most rudimentary examination. Where are the bodies of climate change victims? (People dyeing from cold or heat due to excessive cost of heating or air conditioning as well as eagles, hawks, bats and other casualties of wind turbines count as victims of climate alarmism, not climate change.)

Well, let’s see: According to NASA, the year 2016 was the warmest year in the 21st Century, and the high temperature was said to be 1.2C above NASA’s average. So, temperatures would have to increase 0.3C from the 2016 highpoint, to reach this 1.5C “tipping point”.
But as you can see below, the temperatures have cooled by about 0.6C since the 2016 highpoint, so we are not half a degree from the 1.5C “danger point” we are actually almost 1C from the 1.5C “danger point”. And the cooling may continue.
The author needs to get his facts straight. If he did, he would see there is nothing to worry about concerning the temperatures. The Earth is not overheating, as he claims.
Heat waves, as with all other weather, are local, not global. Whatever temperature a heat wave is, it is in relation to the location’s average temperature, not in relation to the idea of a planet that has a 15 C average.

Spot on. The biggest impact on increasing emissions is population growth. The open U.S. border is more than offsetting anything that Greens suggest is needed to reduce emissions. Assuming the claim is true, the best way to deal with a meltdown is by adaptation. Adaptation requires money to develop the technologies that enable adaptation, and destroying economies makes the money dry up.

I was fiddling with one of my dataloggers today (Cambridgeshire version) because its getting near the end of the month and tomorrow, if I remember, will be emptying them to see what goodness lurks within.
Just today was a sneak peek to see how The Heatwave affected north Cambridgeshire.
I was a bit disappointed that my ad-hoc Stevenson Screen had been letting the sun shine on my logger.
I’d tried my best, it was inside a white glossy metal plant pot, hung upside down in the lower branches of a large dense conifer tree.
Aw well, I do now have it ‘on record’ that north Cambs reached 49.8°C on the 13th July. Bang on 16:00 hrs too, the hottest part of a BST day.
But being under the tree, I recalled the Talus Garland Effect (see little pic attached) and had a truly mind-blowing realisation – about damp, dew, condensation, Stevenson Screens and the thermometers that may be within
And you know what..
It Blows All Of Climate Change Science clean out of the water.
In all probability there has been NO temperature rise what-so-frigging-ever since, easily, 1850 if not before’
none.

Just think of all the honest, hardworking people’s money that could be saved by firing all those dishonest “climate appeasers” around the world, “working in climate science”.

What happened to the 2C guardrail? I guess I was too busy sleepwalking to notice the change to 1.5C. So what happens when we pass 1.5C and life on Earth goes on as normal? Will they admit they were wrong? Or will they quietly go back to 2C as the real guardrail and claim it was always 2C?
The temperature guardians must be in the middle of a real conundrum right now. Do they slow down the warming of the planet? Or do they continue the warming and risk exposing themselves as charlatans when the temperature surpasses 1.5C and the world doesn’t end?
If I thought agreeing with extreme views of “it’s too late now” would shut the rear of the climate hysterics up, I would.
I like to compare claims against actual data. To see how bad it is getting let’s compare the climate 20 years ago to this year. You would think that climate alarmists have learned not to make predictions. At least McGuire seems to have learned enough not to mention a date or timeline beyond “soon.” Of course, he then loses all credibility when he suggests “use your vote wisely to put in power a government that walks the talk on the climate emergency.” HaHaHaHaHa. At one time middle school geography included mention of climate classification. What percentage of the world‘s land area has actually had changed climate classification? It’s likely 99% of the world hasn’t experienced a changed climate at all in the last 50 years.

I’ve heard that the upcoming COP-27 meetings in Egypt in early November will attract as many as 30,000 delegates. Most of these are paid for with tax dollars and almost all will be travelling by jet airliners which are among the worst emitters in the transportation sector. Yet these same delegates will be preaching to the rest of us about the necessity/urgency to cut our CO2 emissions; i.e. “our” emissions but not “theirs”. Do I detect a certain degree of hypocrisy and also an explanation for why most people worldwide have no intention of changing their lifestyles to save the planet.

I agree time is running out for this particular nonsense. You can only cry “wolf” so many times before listeners begging to catch on that there isn’t any wolf, just a bunch of addle brained, money grubbing liars.
If Bill really believes that a climate disaster is coming and we can no longer stop it, then he should be pushing solutions to survive it. This means increasing energy generation to power all the air conditioning that will be needed, improving water storage and access, and creating more drought resistance crops. Instead he advocates for things that will not help, or will even make us less resilient to the changes he says are coming. He is either being dishonest or is a fool. Either way, nobody should listen to him.
