14,000 Scientists Warn of Imminent Climate Tipping Points

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Climate scientists have issued an updated climate emergency declaration, urging us to take them seriously this time.

World Scientists’ Warning of a Climate Emergency 2021

William J Ripple,  Christopher Wolf,  Thomas M Newsome,  Jillian W GreggTimothy M Lenton,  Ignacio Palomo,  Jasper A J Eikelboom,  Beverly E Law,  Saleemul HuqPhilip B Duffy,  Johan Rockström

In 2019, Ripple and colleagues (2020) warned of untold suffering and declared a climate emergency together with more than 11,000 scientist signatories from 153 countries. They presented graphs of planetary vital signs indicating very troubling trends, along with little progress by humanity to address climate change. On the basis of these data and scientists’ moral obligation to “clearly warn humanity of any catastrophic threat,” they called for transformative change. Since the article’s publication, more than 2,800 additional scientists have signed that declaration of a climate emergency (see supplemental file S1 for the current signatory list); in addition, 1,990 jurisdictions in 34 countries have now formally declared or recognized a climate emergency (figure 1p). But, at the same time, there has been an unprecedented surge in climate-related disasters since 2019, including devastating flooding in South America and Southeast Asia, record shattering heat waves and wildfires in Australia and the Western United States, an extraordinary Atlantic hurricane season, and devastating cyclones in Africa, South Asia, and the West Pacific (see supplemental file S2 for attribution information). There is also mounting evidence that we are nearing or have already crossed tipping points associated with critical parts of the Earth system, including the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, warm-water coral reefs, and the Amazon rainforest (supplemental file S2). Given these alarming developments, we need short, frequent, and easily accessible updates on the climate emergency.

There is no evidence I can see that this climate emergency will be any more significant than previous climate emergency declarations and tipping point warnings, dating back to the grandaddy of climate emergency declarations in 1989.

They cannot possibly believe this nonsense!

Since there are about 7M scientists in the world, its a pretty dismal performance for them to get only 0.2% of scientists to sign their phony petition.

Maybe we should simply say that 99.8% of the world’s scientists did not sign a petition indicating that the world is at a climate tipping point.

When one describes a “tipping point” one assumes that the system is in balance before a particular event occurs and it is pushed out of balance by that event.

In weather that happens daily. That’s because weather is caused by the chaotic interaction of multiple physical processes (besides radiation balance and trace gas concentrations) and influenced by the global geography and extreme abundance of water (which just so happens to exist in all its possible states of on the third planet of Sol, and that’s HUGE)

So how could such a chaotic system be “out of balance” in the first place?

If this balance is so precarious, how did the planet survive its infancy when the “greenhouse” was much more potent than it is now after millennia of cooling?

It’s not that hard to find 14,000 scoundrel ‘scientists for profit’ who will sign up for anything that gets them closer to the “big money” of sloppily administered government knee-jerk spending.

Let’s hope they darken their reputations by their participating in something as elusive of actual truth as science by popular opinion.

What exactly entitles you to claim you are a “climate scientist”?.

The scientific discipline that comes closest to be allowed to be called climatology is paleo-climatology, a sub-discipline of geology. Paleo-climatologists study climate change in the past – up to 4 billion years.

Since the climate is something that involves multiple “disciplines,” I doubt there is anyone that covers the gamut. Agree on paleo-climatology being closest to being a “dedicated” scientific discipline.

All that aside, the notion that people need specific credentials to participate in “climate science” is false, since science relies not on credentials but on a method. Of course, that doesn’t mean this list of 14,000 activists who wouldn’t know real science from a hole in the ground should be taken seriously by anyone.

Of course, the “media” swallows this bullshit hook, line and sinker.

I did not know that there were so many stupid scientists in the world. Wow ! 14000. Fact is that CO2 in the earth atmosphere has been 420 ppm before, it has been 840 ppm before and it has been 1000 and 2000 ppm before, for long periods of time. If no CO2 caused tipping point was reached then, why would that be the case now? Do they have an explanation or are they just ignorant about the history of the earth ?

You would be amazed how many of them are convinced that CO2 levels have never been this high before.

People in the UK, EU, Lapland , Western USA, US E coast, China, India, Middle East don’t need a declaration to see a climate tipping point: this summer they can look out their windows at the flooded streets or baking heat.

…. and remember it happened all before and not even that long ago. Incidently, we in Liverpool could do with some of that warmth.

So how rare does an event have to be to be considered extreme? How many many people or square miles does it have to affect? Now do the math and show how many such events would occur per year or per decade.
Here’s a hint – A once per century event affecting a million people would occur 380 times per year with a perfectly even distribution. 100 million people being directly affected is just an average summer.

We’re having a heat wave where I live. We’re breaking 100F for 3 or 4 days in a row. Haven’t hit 100F around here in at least 5 years.
On the other hand, the records right now are around 110F.

I was in a heatwave not that long ago – searing temperatures, dehydration, the lot. So I turned off the barbecue and had a cold beer.

It really is fascinating how griff can convince himself that weather events that have happened before, many times, this time are being caused by CO2.
Because the sacred models have spoken.

“Bad” weather = climate change. Unless it’s cold, in which case it’s just “natural variation.” The logical pretzels are simply amazing, and the cognitive dissonance would be fierce if they were capable of logic and reason.

Cold weather = climate change now also. They haven’t completed settled on how to blame CO2 for it, but the last excuse I saw was that the warming in the Arctic forces the jet stream to dip south. No one heard of a “polar vortex” until recently, so the phenomenon must never have happened before.

Griffy-poo: Recall Einstein’s definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Do you expect people at this blog to eventually start agreeing with you if you just keep posting these types of comments often enough? I imagine Britain has plenty of good psychologists for whatever it is worth to you.

From the declaration : Point (6) human population, stabilizing and gradually reducing the population
is the giveaway – it is Malthus from the grave.

Nothing new here, it the same old British Empire’s eugenics policy from the first global company, the British East Indie Company, Adam Smith’s sandbox, with Malthus the resident ¨economist¨.

It sure looks like the sun has not set on this mad hatters tea party, simply fresh cups!

14,000 Scientists Warn of Imminent Climate Tipping Points!!!!! Whoopie!!!! The truth is that it only takes one scientist to prove all the others wrong.

Physicist Dr Gordon J Fulks stated the following in an article titled ‘Physicist’s View of “the Precautionary Principles”‘ (20 April 2012):

In 1905 Albert Einstein stood against the entire classical physics world with his new ideas on relativity. A few years later, a high school biology teacher from Seattle (Harlen Bretz) stood against the entire geological profession with his explanations of Pacific Northwest geology. And just a few years ago, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren stood against the entire medical profession to explain the real cause of peptic ulcers.

It is as Galileo said many centuries ago: “The authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.”

Hence the fundamental issue for me is the survival of science as an objective profession. Continuous spin from highly political non-scientists does not help. And complicity among many scientists who want the government grants to continue is very destructive.

14,000 scientists! As Einstein famously said it takes only one to prove him wrong.

1989 The Berlin Wall came down and not because of climate change. And it has not gone back up.

There should be a place in the Smithsonian Museum to display the untold suffering caused by climate change as predicted since 1989. They can start with improved life expectancy and food production.

There should be a place in the Smithsonian Museum to display the untold suffering caused by climate change policies based on the predicted “crisis” since 1989.

  • Deaths (due to lack of electricity, heat, clean water or food)
  • Reduction in living standards (due to needlessly inflated energy prices)
  • Health impacts of useless wind farms
  • Needless stream of non-recyclable waste from windmills and solar panels
  • Environmental damage done for the sake of mining “rare Earth metals” for unnecessary quantities of batteries for unwanted EVs and for windmills and solar panels
  • Increases in REAL pollution through the transfer of manufacturing from “first world” countries to “developing” countries with cheaper and (once the “renewable energy” lunacy gets a big enough foothold) less reliable electricity, and less stringent environmental protections
  • etc.

That might be more informative!
