UN Climate Message: “We are rapidly reaching the point of no return”

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to United Nations General Secretary António Guterres, “these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe”.

Resilient Earth ‘Needs Our Help’ to Reverse Damage, Secretary-General Stresses in Message for World Environment Day

Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message for World Environment Day, observed on 5 June:

We are rapidly reaching the point of no return for the planet.  We face a triple environmental emergency — biodiversity loss, climate disruption and escalating pollution.

For too long, humanity has cut down the Earth’s forests, polluted its rivers and oceans, and ploughed its grasslands into oblivion.  We are ravaging the very ecosystems that underpin our societies.  And, in doing so, we risk depriving ourselves of the food, water and resources we need to survive.

The degradation of the natural world is already undermining the well-being of 3.2 billion people, or 40 per cent of humanity.  Luckily, the Earth is resilient.  But she needs our help.  We still have time to reverse the damage we have done.  That is why, on this World Environment Day, we are launching the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

This global movement will bring together Governments, businesses, civil society and private citizens in an unprecedented effort to heal the Earth.  By restoring ecosystems, we can drive a transformation that will contribute to the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals.

The task is monumental.  We need to replant and protect our forests.  We need to clean up our rivers and seas.  And we need to green our cities.  Accomplishing these things will not only safeguard the planet’s resources.  It will create millions of new jobs by 2030, generate returns of over $7 trillion every year and help eliminate poverty and hunger.

The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a global call to action.  It will draw together political support, scientific research and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration.  Everyone can contribute.

Science tells us these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe, turn back the deadly tide of pollution and end species loss.  So let today be the start of a new decade — one in which we finally make peace with nature and secure a better future for all.

The UN has a long tradition of issuing 10 year warnings. The first 10 year climate warning I know of was issued in 1989 :-

U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked
PETER JAMES SPIELMANN June 30, 1989

UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.

Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ″eco- refugees,′ ′ threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.

He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control

As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.

Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.

″Ecological refugees will become a major concern, and what’s worse is you may find that people can move to drier ground, but the soils and the natural resources may not support life. Africa doesn’t have to worry about land, but would you want to live in the Sahara?″ he said.

Why is the chosen time period 10 years? My theory is it has to do with the length of tenure of UN secretary generals.

A secretary general term is five years. If the Secretary General provides satisfactory service, they can be appointed for a further five years. Gutteres first term ends December this year.

A 10 year climate warning is near term enough to generate a little excitement, but far enough into the future so Gutteres will be safely retired by the time his climate deadline arrives.

Nice. 32 years of world ending in 10 years and nobody seems to even notice the irony. When the latest goalpost move expires they will be in fusion power territory.

UN: ” Science tells us these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe”

If we keep this up for another 10 years, the higher latitudes will be getting closer to the warmth of the Holocene climate optimum, 9,000 to 5,000 years ago………oh no!!

UN: “We need to replant and protect our forests.”

You want to grow trees and forests as quickly as possible?
Do exactly what we have been doing……increase CO2 even more!

UN: “Science tells us these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe”

Hey, wait a minute, didn’t they just say that at the top?
Correct and they’ve been saying it constantly since the late 1980’s…..but there’s been a change in one of the earliest articles of the United Nations stating this below. What is it?

U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not CheckedPETER JAMES SPIELMANN June 29, 1989:

https://apnews.com/article/bd45c372caf118ec99964ea547880cd0

“He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.”

Here is the change:
I’ve been sending that article and link above to people for at least a decade. Earlier this year, they eliminated the title and date of the article that I inserted above the link here for you to see.
Clearly, they did it to make it harder to find(hide it) for people doing a search online and also to eliminate the embarrassing title and year(1989) when the Associated Press reported the United Nations trying to scare us with the ” we have 10 years left” false narrative……32 years ago.

So I guess that we must have killed the planet 3 times since then (-:
Funny how the planet shows it by greening up.

UN: ” Science tells us these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe”

Yes, we know United Nations, please stop telling us that. I guess that we must be greening the planet to death (-:

Been there seen that done that-
Is a 1989 ‘U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked’ Article Authentic? – Truth or Fiction?
We didn’t heed the warning by 2000 so unfortunately we’re all doomed. Stay calm and stiff upper lip so as not to upset the children with the time they have left and may your God walk with you when the dooming is upon us.

We have 10 years to abolish the human train wreck of the UN. They rape, they steal. they cause too many wars.

Hey, the UN is so johnny-come-lately about its point-of-no-return message:

“Humanity ‘Past Point of No Return’ When it Comes to Global Warming?”, https://weather.com/news/climate/video/humanity-past-point-of-no-return-when-it-comes-to-global-warming , Feb 11, 2021

” ‘Past a point of no return’: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero still won’t stop global warming, study says”, https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/11/12/reducing-greenhouse-gas-emissions-stop-climate-change-study/3761882001/ , Nov 12, 2020

“With Sea Level Rise, We’ve Already Hurtled Past A Point Of No Return”, https://www.discovermagazine.com/environment/with-sea-level-rise-weve-already-hurtled-past-a-point-of-no-return , Dec 6, 2019

“I am firmly of the view that the next 18 months will decide our ability to keep climate change to survivable levels and to restore nature to the equilibrium we need for our survival”, Prince Charles speech at a Reception for Commonwealth Foreign Ministers, July 11, 2019
[note: July 11, 2019 + 18 months = mid-January 2021, so we passed that point-of-no-return nearly 5 months ago]

I could go on and on, but need I?

Stick a fork in the Earth folks, it’s done 🙂

NOT!

It is quite clear why we get these repeated claims of a ten year period before doom. It is because humans have ten fingers. If we only had eight fingers the period before next doom would be 8 years.

I have a proposal. Bulldoze the home of every UN climate official and replace it with green space. That will be a step towards the goal, will it not?

Surely they won’t complain about that, so concerned are they for the future of the Earth.

It is remarkable that none of these people appear see the contradiction between making statements about deforestation, pollution, species loss etc, while at the same time advocating for more “renewables”.

It has been explained numerous times that wind and solar will necessarily entail massive mining operations that despoil vast tracts of the landscape and massive clearance of habitat for them to live in, while biomass involves burning living forests. I mean, seriously, are these folk that dumb, or merely duplicitous?

The only reason why this Portugese Socialist was installed as an UN- secretary, is to promote the green-left-wing nonsens about climate-disruption over and over again!
Where is AGW when you need it in one of the coldest Spring months in Europe?(Lol: its weather of course!)
The real problems we have to face the next ten years are, casino-capitalism, overpopulation, religious and political fanaticism, corruption and incompetence all over the world and the illegal migration , that is turning developed states into shitholes!
That’s what destroys ecosystems, brings loss of biodiversity and pollution! “Climatechange” is an inflated nonproblem to cover up the real- and eco-problems!

June 6, 2021 3:41 am

Thereś an unfortunate error in the text. Where it reads: “Science tells us these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe”, it should read: “Science posers tell us these next 10 years are our final, final, final, no really this time it’s real, absolutely final, most finalist ever chance to avert a climate catastrophe”.

Then it all makes sense

Green house gases have nothing to do with global warming. Its been proven over and over by real scientist not getting money from governments and the UN so they can tax us. In 1970 the worlds population was 3.7 billion, in 2020 it had risen to 7.840 billion, that over 4 billion more people putting out 98.6 degrees, paving forrest and fields, and reflecting heat back into the atmosphere.

Reply to  Iron Mountain

“. . . and reflecting heat back into the atmosphere” . . . where it wouldn’t matter squat if there were not such a thing as greenhouse gases and their ability to (a) absorb LWIR associated with such low temperature radiation, (b) thermalize this absorbed energy with the rest of the lower atmosphere, that is nitrogen and oxygen, and (c) with the result that the entire atmosphere, not just water vapor, CO2 and methane components, radiate about half of that absorbed energy back to Earth’s surface to prevent it from freezing.

BTW, I am aware that the use of “reflecting” in the above quoted phrase is actually incorrect: the radiated “heat” attributed to the processes mentioned is inherently due to Stefan-Boltzmann radiation, not reflection.
