Bill Nye on Climate Deniers: “There’s an old saying — ‘science proceeds one funeral at a time’, … but it’s not happening fast enough.”

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

h/t Dr. Willie Soon; The Collegian, a Penn State University student publication, laments that there are still ageing contrarians and climate deniers who dispute the work of the great Michael Mann.

Penn State professor, climate scientist Michael Mann fights against climate denialism

Will Aguirre | The Daily Collegian
Apr 22, 2021

As the world changes and climate changes with it, one thing has stayed the same for decades — Michael Mann’s commitment to fighting the climate war.

Mann began studying quantum mechanics as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, with majors in physics and applied math. When he began work as a graduate student at Yale University, Mann said he was “lured away” from the physics department because there were still opportunities for young scientists to make “substantial contributions” at the forefront of climate studies.

Mann said he doesn’t want to blame fossil fuel workers for engaging in the “climate war.” Instead, he said he believes there are just a few corporate CEOs who serve as “bad actors” and make “cynical decisions knowing the devastating impact” they would have on the climate.

According to Nye, both him and Mann are frequently asked two common questions: “What can I do about climate change,” and “What can be done to convince someone who’s a climate denier?

Nye calls these the $10 trillion questions, because climate deniers are so “dug in” to their beliefs, which only makes it harder to convince them of what the science suggests.

The only definitive way to see significant action to prevent climate change is to simply wait for deniers and contrarians to “age out,” according to Nye.

There’s an old saying — ‘science proceeds one funeral at a time,’” Nye said, “but it’s not happening fast enough.”

There have been occasions where scientists have persuaded their colleagues by providing evidence to back their theories, rather than waiting for their opponents to die.

My favourite example, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren overcame resistance to their theory stomach ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection, by providing evidence to back their claim – they cultured the slow growing previously unknown bacteria responsible for stomach ulcers, proving it existed, and successfully cured ulcers with antibiotics.

Einstein also had trouble convincing his peers that space and time are mutable, until the day Einstein famously received a telegram, from British scientists who had conducted an expedition to an island off the west coast of Africa, to view a total solar eclipse. The purpose of the expedition was to test Einstein’s prediction that stars which appeared close to the sun during the eclipse would be slightly out of position, because star light skimming close to the sun would be bent by the sun’s gravity.

Perhaps if Mann and Nye presented evidence that global warming is causing a significant problem, more people would accept their claim we are currently experiencing a climate crisis.

You’re correct. It’s never settled. Is the birth of new ideas, new challenges and new facts that lead to scientific progress. It’s Nye’s thinking that is stuck in a belief which cannot be challenged.

Just being sarcastic. Cornell is Nye’s alma mater. The relevance is that engineers, if they learn anything at school, should have a healthy respect for science. Per the article, Nye is an admirer / ally of someone who has demonstrated a propensity to cherry-pick data and hide results that contradict his findings. Btw, Doug, are you at all concerned that Nye is disappointed that “climate deniers” aren’t dying-off quickly enough?

Yes, ole Bill doesn’t have to wait for deniers to d!e, he can just get Biden to throw them all in jail. Solitary confinement preferably, that way the deniers can’t spread any more denial. That’s what the Chicoms would do if anyone over there goes against the official dogma.

Biden is back in the business of illegally using the power of the federal government to go after his political opponents, just like he did during the Obama-Biden administration. A Criminal Enterprise/Deep State is running the United States right now.

We are seeing the beginnings of totalitarianism in the United States and our Commander-in-Chief has no internal moral constraints. Biden is a traitor and he continues to betray our nation with his every action.

The Biden administration is trying real hard to steal our freedoms away. Fortunately, conservatives are not sitting still and may have a few vital allies in Democrat Senators Manchin and Sinema, who have said they oppose doing away with the Senate filibuster and oppose adding to the Supreme Court and Machin is even complaining about some of the porkbarrel Democrat spending, so we may have a chance to stop the more radical parts of the Democrat agenda.

Cornell Engineering was tough, very tough. By the end of Sophomore year, both left and right and more were gone. I graduated BSEE, minor in Computer Science, four years before Nye. Carl Sagan was there, as was Hans Bethe. It was a great time to be there. I respected Nye’s work for many years and held him in high regard for teaching science to kids, and adults. But as an entertainer, he had to develop and sell what they were willing to bankroll. His salary depends on saying and selling the popular tripe, and calling it science. He gets to hobnob with politicians and such, and gets to give talks on fake science which sounds and looks good, like his faked experiment for Al Gore. He’s become an embarrassment, and won’t be missed by most people I know with engineering degrees from Cornell.

The joke here on Bill Nye
is that climate science of the consensus is exactly the kind of intractable dross that Max Planck was referring to when he offered the opinion that science progresses one funeral at a time.

His point was that science does not change by convincing the majority of entrenched followers of a paradigm that they are wrong. It changes when the old ‘guard’ dies off and the publication volume of their followers rapidly declines as new young ideas take over.

Consensus climate clones spend most of their time avoiding debates of new ideas, gatekeeping journals, threatening editors to block alternative ideas, name calling, having institutions fire scientists who dare differ or criticize from the dearly held opinions of the crowd…

Note also that individuals of the ruling clique often don’t have more than one piece of output. What else does Mann have that he’s remembered for but the 1998 hockey stick. He’s spent his whole career redoing and arguing about this little thing, writing books and op-eds about his battles in connection with it. He’s paid, what? 80 to a hundred grand a year for a quarter of a century and will get a pension for another quarter century of maybe 65 grand a year and now probably a bigger government pay and additional pension, add in millions for grants and the HS that McIntyre and McKittrick debunked in a week or two has cost the economy a veritable fortune.

No way could this mann be convinced by scholarly argument that even his typos should be fixed.

Jaw, there is a big defence fund that was created and funded by the global warming Marxists, expressly to support the warriors for the cause. They didn’t count on having to deal with a giant like Mark Steyn, though.

Rather than cower away from it, Mark countersued for 20+Million plus punitive damages to lock Mann into the suit and not allow him, as is his style, to drop the suit after a few years of resource draining punishment. Now if he drops the suit, Mark’s countersuit becomes a slam dunk.

Mark is a plaintiff’s worst nightmare. He has written books and given talks on his show harpooning Mann and dismantling his reputation. He called the Nobel Committee and published the reply that Mann was not a Nobel Laureate (When IPCC got the Nobel prize, the director said it really belonged to all the scientists and took it on his own to print up scrolls for each of them. Mike had to emend his legal pleading that stated Steyn had slandered a Nobel Prize winner!!)

He has won two other big suits, one of which resulted in a Canadian Statute being struck down.

Some hard facts about climate alarmists and their “pack of lies”.

Excerpt from my paper
CLIMATE CHANGE, COVID-19, AND THE GREAT RESET Update 1d
“Rode and Fischbeck, professor of Social & Decision Sciences and Engineering & Public Policy, collected 79 predictions of climate-caused apocalypse going back to the first Earth Day in 1970. With the passage of time, many of these forecasts have since expired; the dates have come and gone uneventfully. In fact, 48 (61%) of the predictions have already expired as of the end of 2020.”

Climate doomsters have a perfect NEGATIVE predictive track record – every very-scary climate prediction, of the ~80 they have made since 1970, has FAILED TO HAPPEN.

Fully 48 of these predictions expired at the end of 2020. Never happened! Never will!
What are the odds at 50:50 per prediction?
3.6*10^-15 = 0.0000000000000036

So the climate doomsters were wrong in their very-scary climate predictions 48 times in a row – at 50:50 odds that’s like flipping a coin 48 times and losing every time! The odds against that being mere random stupidity are a gazillion to 1. It’s not just scientists being stupid.

No, these climate doomsters were not telling the truth – they displayed a dishonest bias in their analyses that caused these extremely improbable errors – they knew they were lying.

There is a powerful logic that says no rational person or group could be this wrong for this long; they followed a corrupt agenda, and they lied again and again.

The ability to predict is the best objective means of assessing scientific competence, and the global warming alarmists have NO predictive track record – they have been 100% wrong about everything and nobody should believe these fraudsters – about anything!

I published this new Law in early 2020. Edit: Please delete the word “Virtually”.

“MACRAE’S MAXIM”:
“VIRTUALLY EVERY SCARY PREDICTION BY GLOBAL WARMING ALARMISTS IS FALSE.”

After the Gulag Archipelago, communism was temporarily discredited. We now have university professors who proudly proclaim that they are Marxists.

Similarly, eugenics could come back because it makes some claims that are actually true. AGW, on the other hand, will be seen as similar to flat Earth. Forever.

Global warming is clearly contested, similar to plate tectonics. Perhaps global warming will be accepted eventually, just like plate tectonics has been? The difference is that global warming is very complex, and obviously models are not evidence, so we probably won’t get definitive evidence, one way or another, for a while yet.

And we can observe cyclical weather patterns, too.

Regional temperature charts show this pattern. They show it is not any warmer today than it was in the recenct past, i.e., we are not experiencing unprecedented warmth today due to CO2 or anything else because we are not experiencing unprecedented warmth.

Those cyclical patterns take place in the real world, but not in a computer simulation where the cyclical part is fraudulently removed, as in the instrument-era Hockey Stick charts, where we just get “hotter and hotter” and “hottest year evah!”.

The CO2 hypothesis has been falsified by several pieces of empirical evidence. Just two: the Vostok ice-core data, which show that temperature always changes before atmospheric CO2, and the cooling trend between 1940 and 1980.

The best thing one can do for one’s health is to get your weight under control.

Excess body fat causes numerous problems for the body.

One good thing about it is “all” it takes is self-discipline. You don’t need a doctor or medications for this. You just have to be able to control yourself. Which is easier said than done, I know, but still, it’s doable if you want good health badly enough.

Yes, self-discipline is sadly lacking in many people. It’s the cause of a lot of our problems.

Universal military service would probably fix that problem to a great extent. I would advocate something like this, and say a civilian corp for those who don’t want to be in the military. But a year or two of military/civilian corp service would do an 18-year-old kid a world of good. The military life will make you grow up fast, in a good way. It did it for me.

I don’t expect universal service in the United States considering our politics. Israel does quite well with it, though.

All that is required to control your weight is to replace carbs with fats.

Humans have been eating animal fat for millions of years. Those ancestors that couldn’t process it got sick and died many generations ago.

In contrast, high carb diets are relatively new. We are still killing off the people genetically unable to handle them.

Why were high carb diets rare in the past? Because carbs don’t grow in winter. In many temperate areas they are available only a few months of the year.

Animal fats and proteins in contrast can be harvested year round.

Tom Abbott

Yes, I let myself get out of control weight-wise at one time, and I went on an Atkins diet, where you can eat all the animal fat you want, and lost about 40 pounds in a few months. I never was hungry.

The Atkins diet worked for me, but anyone who is thinking about dieting should check with their doctor first.

Happily, I manage to maintain a decent weight now so that was the only diet I ever tried.

And another thing: A lot of the “fast food” we eat has a lot of chemicals in them for use as preservatives that appear to cause weight gain and other health risks. Some fast food joints are now advertising that they are taking these chemicals out of their products.

I saw a display maybe two years ago where a woman had placed a McDonald’s hamburger, opened up so you could see the inside of both buns, and french fries on a plate and covered it with a transparent cover and it was sitting on her desk and looked like she had just purchased them a few minutes ago.

But it turns out the hamburger and fries were over two years old! Now think about what it would take to make a hamburger and fries appear fresh for two years. What did they put in there? Even the pickle looked fresh!

The solution: More homecooking. 🙂

On the other hand you won’t debate the climate science ” the science is settled ” well isn’t that convenient for you, I don’t know one climate denier I have never met one, heard one or read anything by one, I do know plenty of climate as in global warming deniers ,I’ve met them, heard them and read lots by them .

Mr nye you practice childish misinformation games.

I don’t agree mann is a climate scientist, I believe he is a manipulator of data to follow a agenda.

Unlike you Mr nye I offer you a open invitation to debate with me here the lie of global warming, you can pick a referee if you wish.

“On the other hand you won’t debate the climate science ” the science is settled ” well isn’t that convenient for you”

That says it all.

Bill Nye does not want to debate about the Earth’s climate, he wants all of us to just accept that the science is settled and no more argument is required.

Of course, skeptics know nothing has been settled and say so on a daily basis, and alamists like Bill Nye are challenged every day to provide some evidence for their climate claims, and since they have no evidence, they resort to trying to shut the skeptics up and hope they pass away soon.

Bill, as long as you can’t produce any evidence for your climate claims, there are going to be people who are skeptical of your claims.

And it’s not just old people who are skeptics. I asked a high school kid about climate change not too long ago. I didn’t know anything about how he looked at the subject, which is why I asked, and he told me he thought Human-caused climate change was a scam, even though the alarmist message is taught at his high school (and everywhere else).

So you will be waiting a long time for all the skeptics to pass away, Bill.

Agreed I know a few younger than me who don’t buy into it.i also know a few older than me who do buy into the climate lie , its a simple equation, they watch and don’t read ,there ability to research is there, but would rather watch the box and soak it all up, it saddens me to see folk who I once admired fall for this crap, it angers me that when you point them in the right direction , its excuses or can’t be bothered , so who are the real denialists !

Of course, the alarmists are the denialists. They deny reality, becaused reality doesn’t show any Human-caused Climate Change, despite alarmist claims.

There is actually a rather large group of young non believers who openly lampoon it worse than anything you will see on WUWT. You see that even in supposedly green strong holds like Germany with people like Naomi Seibt and her supporters. There are even German interior worries that climate change may become a lightning rod for clashes between left and right groups of youth.

I see that YouTube has deleted all of Naomi Seibt’s climate realist videos and her entire YouTube channel!
She had some strong opinions about covid-19 and that’s probably the real reason!
She has a website though that they cannot delete (I hope) naomiseibt.com
Naomi is only 20.

This sounds more like he is describing the CAGW clowns!

What belief does a skeptic have? Skeptics require that people prove the claims they make, otherwise, they are skeptical of the validity of the claims.

One belief skeptics have is that alarmists have not made the case that humans are causing the Earth’s climate to change in a measureable way. Skeptics *are* dug into that belief. That would be because alarmists have produced no evidence supporting their case that humans are changing the climate, even though they have been trying for many decades.

All Bill would have to do to solve this problem from his point of view, would be to provide just one little bit of evidence to show humans are causing the climate to change outside its normal range. The skeptics would no longer be skeptical, were he to do that. He can’t do that though, so he whines about skeptics holding his feet to the fire.

One little bit of evidence, Bill. That’s all it would take. And you don’t have it.

The other day I thought of an original (I think) witty (I hope) aphorism. “Science uses funding to generate data, modelling use other people’s data to generate funding.” It seemed witter when I was half asleep.

“Mann began studying quantum mechanics as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, with majors in physics and applied math. When he began work as a graduate student at Yale University, Mann said he was “lured away” from the physics department because there were still opportunities for young scientists to make “substantial contributions” at the forefront of climate studies.”

Oh really, lured away to climate studies because he thought there was room for him to make a “substantial contribution” eh? More likely he couldn’t handle the maths in quantum mechanics and jumped ship before he flunked out! It is no secret that his grasp of maths is famously poor. He and Nye are totally repulsive human beings and have a lot to answer for.

The operational keyword is ‘began’. He never finished it.

Unfortunately for climate science, the really clever cookies did not allow themselves to be ‘lured away’ from real science.

Pamela,
Nye and Mann are two scoundrels cut from the same cloth! They didn’t have the ability to advance far in their fields, so they jumped on the opportunity bandwagon by becoming shills for GangGreen and the Church of Climastrology!
They both acquired some notoriety and gelt by selling their integrity; that makes them mere presstitutes!

“What can I do about climate change,” Nothing its the climate. If you want to reduce the use of coal and oil support Nuclear power.

What can be done to convince someone who’s a climate denier?” The same way you convince anyone of anything. Show them the cold, hard evidence. Use the list of predictions made since 1988. As soon as one comes true use that.

They like to think they’re the Rebel Alliance. But really they’re the Galactic Empire.

So a lot of sceptics are a bit old. Big deal. It means that neither climate change nor these draconian measures they are putting in place to “fight” it will have a large effect on us. It is the young, many of whom are agitating for Net Zero, who will suffer, not from the climate change they fear, but by the wreck of the West they will reap by the policies they sow.

There is a good reason why most skeptics are long in the tooth; we are not dependent on grants or salaries. We are effectively immune from the underhanded tactics of the Woke. Yes, DeSmogBlog can call us names and vilify our reputations and accomplishments but they can’t have us fired from retirement!
