A Line-By-Line Response to Greta Thunberg’s UN Speech

A climate skeptic answers the fiery rhetoric of the Left’s star climate alarmist

Greta Thunberg speaking at the U.N. 09/23/19

Opinion by JACQUES VOORHEES (from his Facebook page)

Note: Greta’s speech is reprinted below. Her quotes are in italic, mine follow each quote. If it turns out there were errors in transcription—as seems likely—I’ll try to update with corrections. I apologize for the snarky tone, but if a 17-year-old can dish it out, I think she can take it.

“My message is that we’ll be watching you. This is all wrong, I shouldn’t be up here, I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean.”

So in your first paragraph you confess that what you’re doing is wrong, and you shouldn’t be doing it. You note you should be back home and in school. OK, so far we’re 100% in agreement. Next?

“Yet, you all come to us young people for hope, how dare you?”

Not sure where you’re getting your information. No sentient adult goes to young people “for hope,” whether they’ve been “dared” to or otherwise. Normally, when adults consider young people like yourself, the operative word is “despair.” And if you’re unfamiliar with that word, it means “absence of hope.”

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words…”

Wow, you must have had very fragile dreams, and an even more precarious childhood, if mere empty words could steal them. Even words loaded with meaning shouldn’t be able to take down someone’s dreams that easily, if the dreams are even a little bit deeply held. But empty words? Greta, you need to find better dreams and cling to them with more determination. As for your stolen childhood, this makes me suspect you didn’t exactly win the lottery when it comes to parents, did you? Just sayin’.

“…and yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering, people are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing.”

OK, sounds like someone’s been playing too much of the computer video game Civilization. Yes, in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI people are suffering, people are dying, and entire ecosystems are collapsing. Meanwhile back in reality, none of that is occurring. Well, none of it that is caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide at least. Greta, try to spend a few hours each day actually off your computer, so you can experience the world as it really is, not as your scary online world, and your handlers, are convincing you it must be.

“We are in the beginning of a mass extinction…”

Now it seems you’ve fallen into a time machine which has transported you back to the Yucatan Peninsula, sixty-five million years ago, when the comet was about to annihilate the dinosaurs. Either that or someone is doing a very good job of filling your head with utter nonsense. Shame on them, for scaring the socks off you. There is no evidence that we’re at the beginning of a mass extinction–certainly not of any life forms we care about.

“…and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you?”

Um, did your speechwriter not know the audience you’d be addressing today? You’re speaking to diplomats in the United Nations General Assembly. There is probably no group of people on Earth less interested in economic growth than these folks. They don’t really care about money, either, as they’re all on generous expense accounts and—thanks to diplomatic immunity—can park anywhere they want in Manhattan without worrying about being ticketed or towed. First rule of public speaking: Know your audience.

“For more than 30 years the science has been crystal-clear.”

Did you bother to look at any of that science? Thirty years ago they were saying Manhattan would be under water by now. Most every prediction so called “climate scientists” have made during the past thirty years has failed to come true. This is not science being crystal-clear. It is shamanism being crystal-clear. You need to learn the difference. A science that is not able to make what are called “useful, non-obvious predictions” is not science. It’s religion. And, I’m sorry, but you’ve become ensnared in the climate cult’s terrible clutches.

“How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.”

Another rule of effective speaking: don’t contradict yourself, especially within a single sentence. If the “politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight,” what exactly are you expecting these UN diplomats to do, beyond what they’re already doing? If the solutions are truly nowhere in sight, you’re certainly not going to get them from this crowd.

“You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency but no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act then you would be evil and that I refuse to believe.”

Greta, on this one, best go with “evil.” Again, you’re addressing the core members of the United Nations, arguably the most worthless organization on the planet today. Even if they did believe something was an urgent problem, they’d not have the collective will to do anything about it. Actually, a better description than evil in this case would be “utterly f…..g worthless.” Remember, these are the very folks who commissioned the IPCC itself, and told it to make reports…every six years. You’d think if the world was about to end, reports of it happening could be slightly more frequent.

“The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control. 50% may be acceptable to you but those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution, or the aspects of equity and climate justice, they also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist. So, a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us, we who have to live with the consequences.”

Are you aware that you’re quoting alarmist predictions from the very scientists who’ve yet to be right about any of their predictions? Does that not concern you?

“How dare you pretend that this can be sold with just business as usual and some technical solutions with today’s emissions levels that remaining CO2 budgets will be entirely gone within less than 8 and a half years.”

Well, ignoring that the sentence itself is gibberish, what exactly are you wanting anyone to do? You just told us that there are no solutions anywhere in sight. You’re very good at saying what you’re angry about. But we haven’t yet heard the grand plan that will solve everything. If you don’t have it, do you really think these diplomats sitting in front of you do?

“There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today because these numbers are too uncomfortable and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.”

Your rhetoric is slipping into the category of deranged, verbal nonsense, but I do find it interesting that you—a seventeen year old—“dares” (if we can borrow your favorite word) to tell an audience of people over twice your age, that they are insufficiently mature. Rarely does insulting your audience achieve desired results, in public speaking. Might be time to consider firing your speech writer.

“You are failing us but the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you and if you choose to fail us I say we will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now, is where we draw the line the world is waking up and change is coming whether you like it or not.”

Well, if change is coming whether they like it or not, why are you even bothering to give this speech? And by the way, what change is coming? You’ve already confessed there are no solutions in sight. This would seem to suggest change is not coming, at least anytime soon. And as for the eyes of all future generations being on the UN General Assembly, good luck with that. Even the eyes of today’s generation aren’t on anything the UN General Assembly does—much less will be the eyes of all generations unto the end of time. But I’m sure the people you’re addressing right now wish they were that important.

Anyway, Greta, a word of advice. You’re clearly a very upset and angry young lady, with endless dedication to your goals. Rather than hurl hate-filled rhetoric at a room of old folks whom you rightly predict won’t do what you want them to do, why don’t you roll up your sleeves and try to make a difference yourself? I think we can all agree that public speaking is probably not your best contribution to the Cause. Go back to school, take some atmospheric physics, basic chemistry, and geology classes. Maybe dabble with the design of that machine that’s going to suck all the CO2 out of the atmosphere. Trust me, it’s not yet on anyone’s drawing board. You can be the first!

And a bonus. If you truly study this issue that has so captured your attention, pretty soon you’re going to learn that the whole thing is one gigantic hoax, the greatest hoax in human history, being perpetrated by the government-educational-industrial complex. You’re going to learn that pretty much everything that’s been indoctrinated into your head is false. You’re going to learn that real scientists, tens of thousands of them, have already learned this and have gone on record as acknowledging it. You’re going to learn you’re being used by adults to turn you into a propagandist for shamanistic alarmism, and you’re going to realize that because of it, you’ve been the victim of massive child abuse.

When you learn all this, I predict that your present anger is going to look like a calm, tranquil lake compared to how you will feel then. I predict at that point you’ll decide to write your own speech. And no matter who’s in the audience when you give it, I predict it will be scathing.

Ms. Thunberg’s speech at the U.N. – video:

I watched her speech yesterday, watcher her body language, facial expressions and tone and that was my takeaway thought at the end. Just a typical teenager not getting what they want, no demand, and packing a big sad-on an stomping away to her room.

My other takeaway was that she really had no idea what she was saying really meant. I am sure she has no idea what a gigatonne is as well as all the other figures she was quoting. Some other propagandist wrote it.

I pity her. Because when all the fanfare, attention and dare I say “fame” dies she will be discarded and I am confident she is not prepared for that.

She was not preaching to the choir. She was preaching to us. She was talking in front of the choir because only the choir could give her a global stage. I don’t think that there is any question that those angry eyes were looking right at you and me, although I can’t explain how she could see us through the haze of CO2!

Her mother is an opera star and her dad is an actor….I can tell u this much, I believe both her parents are activist plus her school teachers are as well.
Her friends according to her don’t see any hope in the future. She blames everything on fossil fuels and couldn’t tell you why, just only what she’s been told. If you asked her what was the components the air we breathe
am sure she could not answer you …78%nitrogen
20% oxygen
.03% carbon dioxide
.97 argon
1% water vapor
In general you should occupy 0.38% of the earth’s total atmosphere

Sorry, but I can’t agree. The subject is one of potential apocalypse: either the collapse of the planetary ecosystem according to the left-wing globalists who peddle the story, or the collapse of the industrial and economic system if we attempt to reduce our CO2 emissions as envisaged.

Being wrong in this scenario is flatly unforgivable, no matter how passionately the convictions are held. In fact the passion makes it worse, because it ensures that the convictions will be defended irrespective of whether they survive contact with reality.

The most important thing about Greta Thunberg is mentioned in the article: she’s being used by a grossly cynical and venal agenda as a way to deflect legitimate inspection of its actions. She is not stupid, and will one day realise this.

I feel sorry for her and her family when that day comes.

Was this entire sorry episode of presenting a young girl with serious problems as their climate voice planned over a period of several years? That is disgusting to me.

My personal opinion is that Greta Thunberg needs to go to University on another continent. A very long way away from her parents. She can detox from climate witchcraft there, study domething she is genuinely interested in and generally experience life not at the beck and call of her dodgy mother.

Oh, I’m so hoping that a quality candidate from each party, Republican and Democrat, runs against AOC and routs her in 2020 – especially (and more likely, unfortunately) in the Democratic primary. Because she is as big a moron as Greta is, and just about as immature. I’ve read that the people in her district, especially the Queens portion of her district, was fed up with her lack of constituent service even back earlier in the year already. If a seasoned Democrat runs against her in the next primary, AOC could (hopefully) be a one-term wonder.

Yup.
And now that she has taken on an angry making-hate-faces affect, and turned the corner and from nervous Nellie scold to insulting know-it-all, she is gonna find out that any sympathy or leeway she used to garner will quickly evaporate and be replaced by in-kind replies. She has revealed herself as just another selfish brat, full of herself and wanting everyone to see everything her way and arrange things they way she thinks she would like them to be.
I am 100% sure that she would not like the world as it would be if her wish suddenly became true.
Lucky for her and everyone else that will not happen.
Because most everyone else, especially the people she was addressing, are every bit as selfish as she is.
And what she is asking for amounts to taking away almost everything from almost everyone, and making sure it stays that way.

The fact is, the people on the alarmist side are the ones preventing any real progress on environmental issues, or problems with solutions which are just a matter of attention and money.
Incredibly, they are even the ones against any of the actual CO2-free replacements that exist for a substantial fraction of fossil fuel derived energy, which are of course hydro and nuclear.

This is clearly the deep thought of a 10yo … who appears to have been holding her breath till she turns purple. What children and adolescents FAIL to understand is that THEIR emotions are fleeting, ephemeral, and ultimately meaningless. Even worse … emotions cloud judgement … usually at the precise time reason, logic and knowledge are called-for.

This is why children should be allowed to be children. Doing the JOB of childhood, which is to learn and grow whilst doing mostly inconsequential “kid things”. She needs to go on a date … and learn how quickly she’ll bore her date with depressing tirades about the end of the world. That sort of “growth” will suit her well.

Here’s the real problem for poor Greta and the CAGW extremists. Since 1990 co2 levels have increased by about 60 ppm and nearly all that increase has come from China, India and the developing world, while OECD countries emissions have virtually flat-lined.
The kiddies should take their protests to China and the developing world and so called adults should stop abusing very vulnerable children.
Very simple maths and yet nobody seems to understand?

Ashok Patel-

What you say is true. But consider this: what if the U.S. reduced it’s per capita emission to the current of level of India. Would that reduction produce any significant reduction in global temperature (using the current models)? Answer: It would not.

As I understand India’s pledge to the Paris Accord, they will not sacrifice economic development to reduce CO2 production (Which I absolutely agree with). So when India has developed to same economic level as the U.S. (and I certainly hope they will), with 8 tons of CO2 per capita, would that increase have any effect on global temperature (again using the current models)? The answer is: Of course it would.

Only the radical greens want the developed and developing world to live like the third world, in complete poverty, to produce some CO2 level that they think will keep the world temperature from raising 2 degree C (or is it 1.5? I can’t keep up).

I suggest they have their calculators removed and be subject to compulsory use of the slide rule and log tables for all calculations in their schooling. After a year or so they will be thoroughly numerate and their arithmetic skills will have improved dramatically.
I can think of UK politicians who would benefit from this regime.Viz Diane Abbot.

Disagree. While China and India may have surpassed the rest of the world in CO2 emissions, to say that the increase is because of that plays into the hands of the warmunists. Yes, concentrations have increased by 60ppm – but we don’t know with absolute certainty where it came from. If the planet is warming naturally, the ocean burping could easily account for all of that.

I suggest she immediately fly to Great Falls MT and travel to East Glacier to cool off in the fall weather this Friday.

Action Recommended: Make preparations per the instructions
Issued by: Great Falls – MT, US, National Weather Service,

…WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON… * WHAT…Blizzard conditions possible. Total snow accumulations of 18 to 36 inches, with locally higher amounts in the mountains. Record or near-record cold temperatures in the teens and 20s with wind chills zero to 15 above zero. North to northeast winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph. * WHERE…Northern Rockies, Rocky Mountain Front, and adjacent plains of north-central Montana. * WHEN…From Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. * IMPACTS…Extreme impacts possible, including to power infrastructure including power lines resulting in widespread power outages, agricultural interests; outdoor recreational interests including camping and hunting activities; and travel. Widespread significant tree damage is possible with heavy wet snow and strong winds impacting trees with foliage. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS…This early-season winter storm and/or blizzard has the potential to set a new benchmark for snow accumulations, cold temperatures, and resulting impacts for parts of the Northern Rockies and the Rocky Mountain Front. A similar storm in 1934 produced prolific amounts of snow in late September over north-central Montana. An extension and/or expansion of Winter Storm Watches are likely. * CONFIDENCE…High on accumulations, winds, and expected impacts. There is low to moderate confidence on the timing of onset and end of this winter storm event. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation. && “

I think Great Falls is not in this storm area. Try:
Kalispell, Glacier Park International Airport (KGPI)
This is a warning from the Missoula NWS Office

Doublegoodplus.

It is the child abusers that should be punished. As the earth cools, it will Be Greta that either has to remain in denial or will suddenly realize that she has proclaimed her stupidity to the entire world. How will she face that?

If she’s this angry about nothing, imagine how angry she’ll be if she ever learns the truth. Although, it seems more likely that she’ll end up in jail for eco-terrorism first. We see this all the time where lies are used to indoctrinate youth into ideological causes in order to breed supporters whose ends justify any means which leads to really bad choices.

“50% may be acceptable to you but those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution, or the aspects of equity and climate justice, they also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist.”

The technology does exist, Greta. Plant a tree. You’ll feel better tomorrow morning.

Plant a tree in Sweden, so it can be cut down for biomass fuel to support your country’s ‘carbon neutral’ lie.

Craig, it is interesting that Sweden has fared poorly in the tree management business compared with Finland next door.

The great CO2 sucking mechanism absolutely exists. It is called the tundra or taiga. When ice sheets covered great swathes of the northern hemisphere there were few trees, and CO2 fell to a very low level. This is the opposite of what should happen according to the “CO2 is left over if there are no forests” theory. Ignore that.

When the ice sheets melted the permafrost took over with a few inches of melting in summer. Then the permafrost retreated north a few thousand km and we have only a few million sq km of it left. About 14m.

When it melts, which I hope it does, billions of trees will grow there without us lifting a finger. The birds will replant the entire Arctic. Trees already cover the tundra to a height of one or two feet. If the permafrost melts they will grow rapidly.

Suppose a tree weighs one ton. Half of that is carbon. So at a tree density of one per 5 sq m in an unpopulated region, then after about 100 years the trees will have absorbed over a trillion tons of carbon out of the atmosphere and sequestered it in a vast renewable energy farm. That’s trillion with a T. And that doesn’t count the systematic sequestration of carbon in the root systems and grasses.

Such an amount will pull about 40 years worth of CO2 out of the air at today’s emission rate.

http://www.forestecologynetwork.org/climate_change/sequestration_facts.html

The total stored in boreal forests will certainly reach the current content of 106 tons carbon per acre, or about 18 trillion tons of carbon. Even if we were to continue at today’s rate of emission, the new trees and biomass would absorb 750 years worth of it, resulting in no net increase in the concentration.

You want to suck CO2 out of the air? Melt the permafrost or stand back and let Nature continue to do so as it has for the past 20,000 years.

There is no climate crisis caused by CO2. There isn’t nearly enough of it as things are now.

And all the above figures assume that Antarctica will remain frozen. Toss that into the forest area and see what happens.

Talking of tree planting, when I became a New Zealand citizen, I was gifted a native tree called a Totara. They can grow for 1000 years or more. It is planted north of Wellington, the capital of NZ. If it is left to grow I believe it will absorb more CO2 than I will ever have emitted in my entire life and probably many other people too.

Please St. Greta can I now go to climate heaven?

I haven’t planted any NZ trees – just left it to our mad politician who promised to plant a billion trees, then found there was no land or labour to plant them. So put the first batch of a quarter of a million seedlings through the chipper! You wouldn’t read about it – well, not in our NZ MSM, who are too busy praising Ardern who would not mention global warming to POTUS, but thinks we should concentrate on “wellbeing”!

We have hundreds of totara on our place, but our dumb politicians, who are supposed to espouse the whole fairytale, will not give any carbon credits for them. However, if we planted the whole place in radiata pine, which is harvested in 30 years, we’d get tons. Huh?

Who wrote her speech that she read? I think that she did a good job delivering it despite the nonsense. She mentioned science. The AGW conjecture seems plausible at first but a more indepth look at reveals that it is based on only partial science and is full of holes. For example, the AGW conjecture depends upon the existence of a radiant greenhouse effect caused by trace gases with LWIR absorption bands. Such a radiant greenhouse effect has not been observed in a real greenhouse, in the Earth’s atmosphere or anywhere else in the solar system for that matter. The radiant greenhouse effect is nothing but science fiction so hence the AGW conjecture is nothing but science fiction as well. The reality is that, based on the paleoclimate record and the work done with models, the climate change we are experiencing today is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Despite the hype, there is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and there is plenty of scientific rationale to support the idea that the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero. It is all a matter of science. Apparently it is science that Greta is not aware of. She has a general science mentality, assuming that all of the science “facts” that she has read in text books and what her handlers are telling her are true. She really needs to be back in school.

What “nonsense” would that be? I will issue you the same challenge I have to many other “church of the oil industry” zealots. Produce one (1) published, peer reviewed study using ALL the available data that contradicts what the science has been saying for thirty years. One. This girl has Asperger’s and English is certainly not her first language. How is your second, third or fourth language? How many royal societies do you belong to? Past all that, that this child has already accomplished more than you ever will, go ahead and produce said paper and I will come back here and apologise in public.

The science in this case has never been ‘crystal clear’. If ECS is 1.5, which even the IPCC says it could be, there is less need to do anything.

She is making the classical mistake since someone first thought the rain gods needed to be appeased, confusing ‘ought’ with ‘is’; a very common teenager style mistake. The ‘ought’- meaning moral imperative is clear, the ‘is’ -what ECS actually is and how we should respond, is not.
