This Striking Climate Change Visualisation Is Now Customisable for Any Place on Earth

By Brian Kahn on 18 Jun 2019 at 2:30PM

When University of Reading climate scientist released his warming stripes visualisation for the globe last year, people freaked (in a good way). The minimalist graphic stripped out unnecessary clutter and told the story of global warming in blue and red stripes.

On Monday, Hawkings released a new website that allows users to create warming stripes for nearly every country, and even some cities and US states. The data visualisations reveal a stark warming trend nearly everywhere, presenting an opportunity to shame your climate denying uncle who thinks a cold day disproves the climate crisis is afoot.

The warming stripes graphic takes the yearly average temperature departure from normal and visualises it in a stark colour scale running from blue for cooler-than-normal to red for hotter-than-normal. The resulting visualisation shows the global warming signal clear as day. Following in the vein of an earlier visualisation where Hawkins depicted rising temperatures as a colour-changing spiral, it went viral. It also inspired a campaign by TV meteorologists to talk about climate change on the air.

But it also showed the global average temperature, which nobody experiences. The new iteration of warming stripes, however, helps bring things a little closer to home. Using data from Berkeley Earth as well as national meteorological agencies, the new stripes show how much individual countries have warmed. Some individuals countries like the tiny, scattered Cook Islands aren’t included, but most nations on Earth are there.

The resulting graphics illustrate that while there are fluctuations from place to place based on how much they’re influenced by natural climate patterns like, say, El Niño, climate change is slowly overwhelming those signals as it warms the planet. Here’s the annual average temperature departure from 1901-2018 for Australia, Barbados, and Turkmenistan, all of which showcase the planet’s increasingly hot and agitated state:

  1. “…climate change is slowly overwhelming those signals as it warms the planet.”

So now climate change is warming the planet rather than CO2 supposedly warming the planet causing climate change.

    • First off, the writer is just a reporter, not a scientist. To Brian science is literally magical religion.

And Religious doctrine belief simply requires faith. And Faith is all that is needed with CC, once you drink the klimate kool-aid to “enlightenment” you too would stop being a heretic.

    • I suppose you could say that CO2 causes Climate Change, therefore it is Climate Change that causes the rise in temperature?

  2. Another Reuters alarmist twist taken at face value by the In Our Backyard CBC…
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/arctic-permafrost-thawing-early-1.5179760

Nowhere in the article or in the paper, the location of the three (yes only three sites investigated) is replaced within the typical patterns of atmospheric circulation. Hence the article is rife with blatant generalizations such as “”What we saw was amazing,” Vladimir E. Romanovsky, a professor of geophysics at the university, told Reuters by telephone. “It’s an indication that the climate is now warmer than at any time in the last 5,000 or more years.”

Yet, in the paper “3.2 Key drivers of rapid top-down thaw of very cold permafrost From our results, we identify three key factors which are responsible for widespread thaw at each of our study sites: an increase in summer warmth, limited thermal buffering from overlying soil organic layers and vegetation, and near surface massive ice. ”

Summer warmth usually is the result of either prevailing anticyclonic conditions and intense insolation or advections of warm air displaced by intense descents of polar air toward lower latitudes. Yet, this is never discussed. Congratulations!

The Reuters hit piece ends with… a quote from a Greenpeace activist “”Thawing permafrost is one of the tipping points for climate breakdown and it’s happening before our very eyes,” said Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International.
“This premature thawing is another clear signal that we must decarbonize our economies, and immediately.”

So much for reporting about science, hey CBC/Reuters…

  3. They need new ways of lying to people, since the old ones aren’t working out so well.

    • “over half of it (global heating) could well be due to increasing CO2” Roy Spencer.

Are you calling Roy a liar?

      • Even if the increase in CO2 is 100% man made, there is no problem. If the CO2 increase is only half man made, we have even less of “not have a problem”. Warmer is good, colder is bad. And most of the warming occurs at high latitudes and at night.

        • “not have a problem”

How would you know that? CO2 hasn’t been at this level in 15 million years. We’re about to run the Neogene in reverse except its not going to take 20 million years, more like 200. What could go wrong?

          • You are going to have to clarify what you mean there isn’t really any analysis it’s just a graph which doesn’t really show anything. I see a wiggly red line representing some strange 13 month averaging filter on the blue data, the logic for the choice of 13 months escapes me as it seems to be inducing beat signals. I would say I need a little more information if you think that is supposed to mean something to me.

          • It wasn’t a problem 15 million years ago.
It wasn’t a problem when it was 20 times the current concentrations.
That alone proves that the small increases we have enjoyed over the last 100 years won’t be a problem any time in the future.

This warming, from “the one that everyone trusts”.

Oh, you mean the same warming that goes back to 1700…The Nadir of the Little Ice Age?? That warming??
And just how much of that warming is Man Made and how much is Mann Made?
When did Natural Warming end and Anthro Warming begin?

Still waiting to see anything definitive on that front>>>

          • Your selection is no better and that is sort of the point it’s a very noise ridden graph you can make whatever you like from it. However if you actually put error bars on it then basically you probably don’t have anything. Finally it’s an average temperature which has about as much meaning as the average number of kids per family but it seems to float your boat.

          • The graph you are presenting has a selection made by Roy which you obviously endorse because your comments seem to think it has meaning … HINT it is in red and carries the number 13 on it and it had to be selected.

All statistical graphs involve a selection process unless you want us to ignore the red line and just talk about the blue data points. Not much to say about the blue points it looks like any noise plot.

  4. the popular site windy.com presented us today with this “thing” with the phrase in the left “And yes, we can…”
    Go see for yourselves.
I thing that we all should comment there with science, not politics.
    Cheers

    • That thread is here:
      https://community.windy.com/topic/8704/and-yes-we-can/2

My comment (third down) was this:

      WXcycles about 18 hours ago
“Weather is not climate. Climate-change is not observed by humans in real-time, nor even within a satellite record. It’s detected only centuries after it’s already taken place and been recorded in the earth’s changing surface phenomena, predominantly sediments, their geomorphology, movements of flora and fauna, and via isotope analysis of marine sediments an ice cores. Models of future states are at best a guess, at worst a belief system.”

Ivo seems inclined to poke anyone who does not agree with him in the eye, the thread reads like the prelude to WWIII. Fortunately a mod damped it down before it kicked off.

  5. Amazing what colored graphics can do. Michael Mann just got the vapors over them and started his campaign. Maybe the colored bars will inspire more uninformed activism. Who knows?

Now we need a colored graph for the death of your cell phone, computer, fossil fuel powered-vehicle, heat for winter and A/C for summer as the activist send us back to the stone age. Maybe that would be more helpful.

    • Funny I was just saying the same thing about Loydo it seems to be a climate activist thing to throw some obscure weird graph up that supposedly means something.

      • He uses a pretty standardized formula: the taunt – followed by the company-line link.

  6. Meanwhile, back in the real world, I’m freezing my knackers off here in the tropics….

    • That implies Brian was scientifically literate at one point.
I doubt Brian’s problem is acting gone too far to return to intelligence.
I suspect your Billy Madison euphemism would be more Brian’s issues.

      • He occasionally writes a decent article, but mostly he’s just an uber-alarmist @$$hole.

    • Oh and David…

Here’s a George Carlin YT vid to enjoy on euphemisms. A good one for the library for future posts when the smug white liberal Left is inventing new terms to obscure meaning of what we all know.
      Enjoy.

PS: I just left wet, hot, humid Texas back to hot but dry Tucson and no bugs. So happy.

  7. Hah, you call that scary?! — I can do much better.

Here I transformed Ed Hawkins’ supposedly child-terrifying graphic into something far better suited for the purpose of scaring children:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/s681nmubjzhwj9z/ClimateScareEdHawkinsReDo.jpg

I am creating images whose fantasy is self-evident and which are devoid of the props and crutches of proper science that evoke associations with outmoded images of rational hope and positive futures … The image I produce is the self-evident one of revelation, unreal and baseless, that can be understood as a joke by anyone who will look at it with the nastalgic glasses of comedic history.

  8. It would interesting to see one over a long enough timeframe that the present day would be blue.

  9. I have a Psychology degree, specialising in human vision. Colour vision was one of the topics covered in great detail.

Red is a warning or danger colour for humans. Anything coloured red, looks alarming.

This is the first dishonest thing about warming stripes. Using red to represent warming, makes warming look alarming, even if the temperature increase is only 0.001 of a degree Celsius.

You can test this, by changing the red to another colour. For example, green. The warming stripes no longer look alarming. And instead, look quite relaxing.

Try swapping blue and red. So that blue represents warmer temperatures, and red represents cooler temperatures. Warming stripes suddenly look like we have just changed from alarming to good. Even though the graphic is still showing warming.

From the warming stripes website: https://showyourstripes.info/faq
“For each country, the average temperature in 1971-2000 is set as the boundary between blue and red colours”

This means that all warming stripes will always be mostly blue to the left of 1985, and mostly red to the right of 1985, even if the temperature change is tiny.

From the warming stripes website: https://showyourstripes.info/faq
“the colour scale varies from +/- 2.6 standard deviations of the annual average temperatures between 1901-2000.”

This means that even a tiny change in temperature is displayed as the full range from dark blue to dark red.

This is a dishonest graphic, which makes any amount of warming, ever a trivial amount of warming, look catastrophic.

This is a dishonest graphic, being used by dishonest people.

      • Yes, do the glue, but first, paint red and blue stripes on your naked body to increase the impact of your statement. Good luck, and choose a location that’s warm this time of year. (^_^)

  10. Nobody experiences a global average temperature, so instead they show the local average temperature, which again nobody experiences.

Why not daily maximum temps, you know like when people are awake and active??

    • This (“yearly average temperature departure from normal”) is what caught my eye.

A common misconception is that the average temperature is ‘normal’ and anything outside of this is bad.

Why are they not complaining about the colder temps, only the hotter ones?

Many people die from the cold and more than die from heat according to some studies. E.g.:

      The Lancet 2015

A new study published in The Lancet shows 6.5% of deaths in this country are attributed to cold weather, compared with 0.5% from hot weather. Most deaths will be from cardiovascular and respiratory disease, as it’s the heart and lungs that struggle when we are outside our comfort zone.

  11. Your old uncle says catastrophic global warming is bunkum because it was a cold day. And the CO2 Scientific Worriers say no it’s not because we had a warm day! Good Lord, I think the cause of Climate Change is due to calcification of academe cerebral blood vessels.

  12. Another contender for victim of the week award.
The “best Victim” must confess how terrified they are by cataclysmic climate fluctuations in their personal space.
Best horror, self imagined, wins a citation by Man Pig Bear or a special blessing from The Cult of Calamitous Climate.
More brownie points if they sign over all their worldly wealth to any one of the NGOs “saving our future climate”.
Douglas Adams”Be very very very frightened”is the best advise I can offer.
Dear Gang Green please be paralysed with fear.
    You know you wanna.

  13. ABC aus is running this crud too.
last night was MINUS 1.9c today might have got to 12 or 13?
and another icy night again…warming is appreciated in preference all my spuds growing well just got whalloped and are limp n translucent leaved;-( 5 or more nights like this forecast, and lamb losses will be high too

  14. In Our Backyard: a critical appraisal of CBC’s climate political campaign
Reuters and the CBC continue their misinformation, equating meteorological conditions with climate.
    https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/sled-dogs-melting-ice-1.5181086

On average, the Arctic is warming two to three times faster than the rest of the world with climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports.

Except that in their desire to do so well, the agency and its parrot published a map forecast of the temperature anomalies affecting the northern hemisphere, hoping no one would understand what this map really means.
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D9VAY96W4AEun0C.png
Cross referencing this image with satellite animations, it is clear that major polar air descents (negative anomalies) are affecting northern Canada’s arctic islands, the entire east and central north American continent, the British Isles, western Europe and North western Africa (Morocco), central Siberia, China and northern Pacific.
These cold air strong negative anomalies will result in the poleward advections of warmer air (hence warm anomalies in western Greenland) displaced by these powerful polar air masses. This is basic atmospheric circulation, meteorology.

Yet neither Reuters nor their CBC parrot condescend to explain the synoptic situation.
Notwithstanding that these peak conditions are already changing…

  15. Well, I finally looked up “woke”, as used in the context of the article’s title:

“alert to injustice in society, especially racism”

Oh, so everybody (other than radical-activist, social-justice warriors) is supposed to know what it means.

Since I assume that the word relates to being awake, might I suggest an alternate definition for others who want a more general term about being intellectually awake:

“alert to the stupidity in society, especially where climate-change alarmism is concerned”
