Quote of the Week: Greta Thunberg claims to be able to “see” carbon dioxide in the air

At first, I thought this had to be a joke. Then I thought it must be some sort of misinterpretation. Sadly, no.

From the website Afrinik, quoting the book –Scener ur hjärtat by Malena Ernman, Svante Thunberg

According to her mother Malena Ernman (48), 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg can see CO2 with the naked eye. She writes that in the book ‘Scenes from the heart. Our life for the climate’, which she wrote with her family.

Greta was diagnosed as a child with obsessive-compulsive disorder and Asperger’s syndrome, just like her younger sister Beata. The activist also has a photographic memory. She knows all the capitals by heart and can list all the chemical elements of the periodic table within one minute. In addition, she has another gift according to her mother.

“Greta is able to see what other people cannot see,” writes Malena Ernman in the book.

“She can see carbon dioxide with the naked eye. She sees how it flows out of chimneys and changes the atmosphere in a landfill.”

Of course, with a ~ 410 parts per million concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, we know that is a physical impossibility. Carbon Dioxide is a colorless and odorless gas:

https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/carbon_dioxide#section=ICSC-Number

It also does not reflect or absorb any light within the light spectrum that humans can see. Even if Greta had some special ability to see into the near infrared, the absorption spectrum of CO2 is far removed from the human range of color sensitivity.

But, this claim underscores how bizarre her activism has become, and people seem to want to look the other way instead of questioning her abilities and cognitive understanding of the information she professes to know.

“see” carbon dioxide in the air??? Never mind seeing it – I have to machete my way through it when I step out my front door – WHERE’S MY INTERVIEW WITH THE UK GOVT????

She’s the “Joan of Arc” of climate change!!

Either that, or one of the twins from “The Shining”.

I was thinking the same thing. No one knows what led Joan to see visions of the saints telling her to seek out the Crown – assuring her that only she could save the kingdom. But self-deluding scenarios like that come from somewhere. How’s this for a guess: Joan was steeped in the Christian ethos and stories of the saints, likely from a charismatic teacher or parent. If Greta Thunberg is full of it, we should take a look at the people in her life who put it there.

Simple experiment to test her skills: several vents, pumping ordinary air upward, 20 meters away. At random, turn on a CO2 injection to one or more of the vents, and see if she spots it. Let science rule.

I’m afraid that the authorities who could charge anyone with child abuse have already been co-opted, so there is no help there.

Kinda like the city council of Clearwater, Florida…

Greta reminds me of either Miller’s “The Crucible” or Asimov’s Mule character in his “Foundation” trilogy.

(let’s see if this post actually appears on WUWT or sits in limbo for hours)

Easy to test. Get 10 identical test tubes on a carousel, all comprised of various colorless gases and 1 of the 10 CO2. If she can see CO2 she will pick it out every time. Have her pick the one she says is CO2. Turn her back spin the carousel have her pick the CO2. If she cannot do this correctly at least 8 times out of ten, her super power is disproved. Chanes are she will do no better than random chance 0 to 3 times out of ten.

If she has no superpower to see CO2 she is not a Greenie prophet, have her walk the plank off a Greenpeace ship in the middle of the Arctic sea. If she has the superpower then I vote for the Green New Deal and choke on my own CO2.

The credit (blame?) for all this goes to the mother. She’s an adult with a fully-formed brain. She should know better. She has projected her strange ideas on her trusting and gullible daughter who’s still in a critical formative stage of brain development.

Objection: assumes facts not in evidence as the lawyers would say.

Dopamine allele polymorphism(s) of dopamine receptor D2 gene might induce hallucinations. There would be elevated dopamine breakdown byproducts in the cerebrospinal fluid (not blood) if so.

I can see really stupid people…does that count? And even worse, I hear them.

All I have to do is turn on the TV and there they are, all talking and spewing nonsense on so-called news channels. There for a while I did not think I could ever make it stop, and then I discovered the MUTE button, and the channel change button, and then most helpful of all, the OFF button. Now it is I who have the power to stop their insistent chatter, at least inside the safe area called my house.

They mostly come out at night…mostly.

“She can see carbon dioxide with the naked eye. She sees how it flows out of chimneys and changes the atmosphere in a landfill.”

Like many she looks but does not understand. Smart as she is, it’s likely she’s being misinformed.

The smog from landfills is so pronounced it’s visible from outer space. Many of them are literally on fire.

If kids are told that the vapor pouring from power station chimneys is smoke, they believe it.

Actually “landfill” is Googletranslatyish. The original swedish “soptipp” is best translated as “garbage dump”. And there really is no doubt that at least Greta’s mother believes that Greta can really see CO2.

Without being unkind to Greta, she does seem to fit this profile according to her mother.

If, or maybe when, she gets intervention or works it out for herself, she could well become very angry. Don’t any of these idiots realise that? Hopefully there won’t be any firearms or sharp objects nearby. For Greta’s sake, not the perpetrators.

As if we needed any more evidence that The Cult of Calamitous Climate really is a cult.
This child abuse is sickening.
It is hard not to laugh, until you realize this poor 16 year old, somewhat mentally challenged child, is surrounded by evil.
Another “Ends justifies the means” disaster coming up.
Most of us can see the likely consequences of this abuse, yet the parents and their enablers charge on.
Liberalism really is a progressive disease.

Quote: “She sees how it flows out of chimneys and changes the atmosphere in a landfill.

A point source or near point source of heat can cause non-constant density that leads to refraction of light. The “road mirage” of water or the shimmer above is something one can see. Note the word landfill. Likely a heat source, especially if there is a passage for methane and hot air to the surface.
My guess is there is a misunderstanding of what is seen and what it is.
This could easily be tested — if one cared to.

When I was a boy people used to say to this sort of thing, “… there’s madness in the family. …”. In other words, you don’t want to marry into such a family as your children will probably turn out to be losers who can’t tell facts from fantasies and will not be able to fend for themselves. Such craziness was not to be encouraged as it often damaged or bought down others by association and the implications of delusional thinking.
