Quote of the Week: Greta Thunberg claims to be able to “see” carbon dioxide in the air

At first, I thought this had to be a joke. Then I thought it must be some sort of misinterpretation. Sadly, no.

From the website Afrinik, quoting the book –Scener ur hjärtat by Malena Ernman, Svante Thunberg

According to her mother Malena Ernman (48), 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg can see CO2 with the naked eye. She writes that in the book ‘Scenes from the heart. Our life for the climate’, which she wrote with her family.

Greta was diagnosed as a child with obsessive-compulsive disorder and Asperger’s syndrome, just like her younger sister Beata. The activist also has a photographic memory. She knows all the capitals by heart and can list all the chemical elements of the periodic table within one minute. In addition, she has another gift according to her mother.

“Greta is able to see what other people cannot see,” writes Malena Ernman in the book.

“She can see carbon dioxide with the naked eye. She sees how it flows out of chimneys and changes the atmosphere in a landfill.”

Of course, with a ~ 410 parts per million concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, we know that is a physical impossibility. Carbon Dioxide is a colorless and odorless gas:

https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/carbon_dioxide#section=ICSC-Number

It also does not reflect or absorb any light within the light spectrum that humans can see. Even if Greta had some special ability to see into the near infrared, the absorption spectrum of CO2 is far removed from the human range of color sensitivity.

But, this claim underscores how bizarre her activism has become, and people seem to want to look the other way instead of questioning her abilities and cognitive understanding of the information she professes to know.

Of course climate alarmists look the other way. They have formed a cult and Greta is the new high-princess and no abilities are beyond her.

And the optics of this doesnt worry the Carb Teamsters? It is a demonstration of the harm political correctness does. They daren’t call this silly because this is a handicapped … er something or other challenged person. Only an ill delusional child has free speech. Ms Ernman seems a piece of work! The Children’s Aid Agency would take the child away from exploitive, fame-seeking parents if it wasnt a PC sanctioned exercise. I have concerns that what’s to follow for the child’s wellbeing when it all falls apart could be disatrous. Surely no rational person believes we are really going to do anything significant about this climate fad.

That’s amazing, considering that CO2 is an invisible and tasteless gas that represents only hundreds particles out of every million. We really should be putting her special talents to better use than as a tool for the fascist globalists.

Greta could be a useful diagnostic instrument, provided of course her observations are confirmed. Maybe as a sensor on a satellite /sarc in case it’s not obvious.

Will some journalist please ask her to nominate what percentage of CO2 is in the air?
Since it really is only 4 molecules for every 10,000 molecules of air, how the devil does she see it?

Confirmed, women are from Venus, where you can see the supercritical CO2.

OK…it’s time to put this puppet out to pasture. These people just get dumber and dumber by the minute. We are dealing with clear mental illness here.

Maxwell Smart: Would you believe…. Greta sees CO2 with the naked eye
Skeptics: I find that hard to believe
Maxwell Smart: Would you believe…. Greta sees CO2 while wearing sunglasses
Skeptics: No
Maxwell Smart: How about Greta sees her sister Beata in a row boat?

This would be quite easy to test, just have say 50 small air hoses emitting a steady stream of gas (you would want to use a reasonable number to limit the chances of choosing the correct one by luck alone). One of them is emitting concentrated CO2 (maybe even pure CO2), the rest are emitting normal air, or Nitrogen gas, or something other than CO2.

If she can actually see CO2, she would have no trouble identifying the hose that is emitting the gas.

I feel somewhat sorry for Greta, she is being used by her parents and by the CAGW community to push a political cause that she cannot possibly understand. She may well be doing this voluntarily as she sees it (which is a bit differently due to her various issues), but the extent to which she actually understands what she’s doing is not apparent and as with almost everyone who sets out to change the world, she will end up causing far more damage than she abates. The world is a mighty complicated place.

I see things, too. All those rods & cones look like teensy-weensy beads. They’re fascinating.

At what point does this stop being vaguely silly and become abuse?

I can smell greenhouse gases too, especially those associated with methane. I can sense the gases with no difficulty in an enclosed space such as a lift. Others may be able to sense these gases too, but out of political correctness, they pretend not to sense them.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those “aromatics” (associated with digestion) are mostly sulfur gases, e.g., Hydrogen Sulfide, Sulfur Dioxide,…

(Chemists, am I correct?)

And they are, as a matter of fact, greenhouse gases, like almost all gases with more than two atoms in the molecule.

Indeed. Methane is odorless and colorless. The methane that gets released in “lifts” and other human occupied enclosed spaces, is not pure methane. Any smells are from the other substances (such as hydrogen sulfide for that distinctive “rotten egg” smell) that is mixed in with the methane.

My suspicion as well. I do think she’s an honest child that’s just being abused by her parents.
She sees heat waves over a chimney and thinks she’s seeing CO2. Parents don’t tell her otherwise, probably too dumb to understand what is really happening.
She never mentions the CO2 coming out of people’s noses, because it isn’t hot enough to “see”.
I suspect you could fool her with an electrical heater in a fireplace, creating waves that she’d think was CO2 coming out of the chimney.

This young girl continues to remind me of Henry Miller’s “The Crucible” and the true believers will hang on her every utterance. We are in for some interesting times.

I tried to read Foundation on two occasions. I really tried, but it was so boring I only managed about 40 pages. I wish I had the fortitude to read it as it often gets mentioned as a great series.

I sense Children of the Corn are here.

But then again, what is rational behavior when all life on the planet will end in 12 years.
