Friday Funny- The epic congressional rant of @AOC

Some people just don’t know when to be contrite after a epic and devastating loss. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is one of those people.

Speaking at a House Financial Services Committee meeting on Tuesday, the embattled representative went on a tirade, angrily countering accusations that her Green New Deal was “elitist”, due to the humongous $93 trillion price tag associated with it.

She also reminded her many critics that just a year ago she was working as a waitress and had gotten health insurance for the first time in her life only just a month ago, thanks to her election to congress.

Watch:

She released this hilarious stream of quotes:

“This is about American lives, and it should not be partisan. Science should not be partisan…”

“We talk about cost. We’re going to pay for this whether we pass a Green New Deal or not. Because as towns and cities go underwater, as wildfires ravage our communities, we are going to pay,”

“And we’re either going to decide if we’re going to pay to react, or if we’re going to pay to be proactive.”

Yes, well…ahem, floods and wildfires have been around long before mankind built towns and cities on floodplains or communities in forests, such as what happened with the tragedy in Paradise, CA in November 2018.

Her rant reminds me of the old Billy Joel song “Piano Man”.

…and the waitress is practicing politics….

She definitely needs more practice. But, this is what it really reminds me of:

I listened to the entire clip. Pure appeal to emotions with fake facts. Of course she really, really believes in what she is saying.

Proposing spending trillions of dollars on stuff that will not significantly reduce human CO2 emissions which is not a problem anyway as there is no CAGW is not good for the poll numbers.

Quinnipiac found Ocasio-Crazy’s national favorability rating sits at a pathetic 23 percent; her unfavorable is 36 percent, which means she is upside down by double digits — 13 whole points.

Faced with this news, the freshman congresswoman went the full-black helicopter. After posting a link to her terrible, awful, very bad polling news, she tweeted, “It’s almost as though there is a directed + concerted far-right propaganda machine with a whole cable news channel, and a dark-money internet operation propped up by the Mercers et al dedicated to maligning me & stoking nat’l division[.]”

Funny that she’s not demanding a vote on her GND resolution in the House. Oh, and flipping a lid over it being voted on in the Senate. Heck, she was yammering about it being a House resolution, utterly forgetting that Ed Markey submitted the same thing in the Senate

Note to AOC- when you find you’ve dug yourself into a deep hole the first thing to do is stop digging.

Note 2 to AOC- When I was your age I thought socialism was a good idea. But in the ensuing 40 years I have come to a much different opinion. Socialism is a deadly trap. It’s like a poison apple; it looks good and it tastes good and then you die. Venezuela is now in that final phase.

Hard to pin down this quote but:
“The trouble with most people, as Will Rogers observed, is not that they don’t know much but that they know so much that isn’t true.”

I really like this one. (Guess Al was looking in a mirror?)

“In 2006 the Oscar-winning documentary about climate change titled “An Inconvenient Truth” displayed an instance of the saying and credited Mark Twain:

What gets us into trouble
is not what we don’t know
It’s what we know for sure
that just ain’t so

– Mark Twain”

As I’ve said before, my favorite secular quote is , ““You know, everybody’s ignorant, just on different subjects.”

― Will Rogers”

I know her bar had to close due to the “living wage” stuff she backs, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume her ability to get things mixed up worked well when she was a barmaid.
AOC should go back to being a barmaid. just a tip.

Is this the climate/weather AOC feels will be stopped if we all follow her plan?

In this issue are published graphic records of the ordeals by fire and water through which the Nairne and Callington districts have passed within One short week. On Christmas Day “heat like the mouth of a hell” was over all, and a fierce grass fire spread desolation across thousands of acres in the neighborhood.
On; New Year’s Day. “a deluge of cataract skies ” turned a still larger area into roaring and devastating water-floods which boiling against the bridges, “hurled down in swift career battlement and plank and pier,” while, in less-contracted channels it swept away trees, destroyed fences, invaded houses, injured roads, desolated crops, and drowned cattle

The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser Fri 4 Jan 1889

I like the phraseology of the time “hurled down in swift career battlement and plank and pier,”

AOC is on MSNBC right now (Fri nite) stating things at a townhall like it is the federal governments responsibility to take control of every local water system in the nation to insure that children aren’t exposed to lead!

AOC is the ultimate statist. In her world there will be no state government and no local government, only the federal government – and we will all dance to the tune the federal government tells us to dance to. Of course she will be the one in the federal government deciding what that tune will be!

March 29, 2019 5:29 pm

Now AOC is claiming on MSNBC at the townhall that we can control methane from cows by the federal government telling farmers what they *have* to feed the cattle! First, she obviously has absolutely no idea about the biology of cows. It doesn’t really matter what you feed them they are still going to produce methane. I sincerely wonder exactly what she thinks farmers are feeding cattle to maximize their methane output! Second, this is a scary proposition from a federal politician – abrogating individual freedom at the whim of the elitists in the federal government.

I’m tired of watching this lunacy. I’m going to turn the channel!

I received this recently from my financial advisor which references the goings-on in the US:

Modern Monetary Theory has popped up (again) as a solution to the world wide problem of lower economic growth and inequality of outcomes.
Many on the Left of US politics (including a few Presidential hopefuls) have been pushing it as a solution to the inequality that exists in much of US society. The recent Green New Deal is a perfect example – spend up big and get what we all want and don’t worry about how we will pay for it.
So what is Modern Monetary Theory ?
Well there is no agreed definition amongst MMT adherents but the basic theory revolves around the role of money in a modern economy.
In most western democracies money is “created” by an independent central bank (think the RBA in Australia or the Federal Reserve in the US) that controls the amount of money in the economy by its relationship with the banking system – where loans are written and credit supplied to the economy.
MMT argues instead of a central bank controlling the money supply that the government itself should control the currency.
A government that does this is in effect in full control because if it issues its own money it can never not meet it obligations.
Why? Well because it can print its own money and pay its obligations with that money.
That’s right MMT proscribes that governments can simply print money and pay for everything their populations want!
And what about inflation when the government actually issues too much money into the economy and the value of that money decreases due to inflation?
Well MMT says the government can use its ability to levy taxes to curb the money supply and curb any inflationary impacts. Presently this role is assumed by central banks via their movement in official interest rates to either stimulate or contract the economy due to too much or too little inflation.
Various theories similar to MMT has been around for over 100 years but of late they are getting rehashed – particularly in the US.
The scenario where a government can simply print money to pay for everything they ever wanted to give there people appeals at present in the US where the federal budget deficit is running at $US1 trillion per annum. Accumulated US debt is over $US20 Trillion.
The US economy is going gangbuster presently growing at close to 3 % and unemployment is at decades lows – and yet the government cannot balance the books.
So MMT adherents say; “ don’t worry simply print more money and pay for everything your people want”.
The problem is that the finite constraints in an economy will catch up with you and whilst you can perhaps control the money supply via taxation you cannot control the actual level of goods and services in an economy.
You end up having too much money chasing too few goods / services.
A good example has been provided in relation to medical services.
Say the government decided tomorrow that we should have universal free dental services in Australia. Now there would not be many people who would say this is a bad idea. It would be good for general health and well being given research linking poor dental care to poor health outcomes etc.
However if dental services was suddenly free the demand would overwhelm the supply of dentists offering those services.
You cannot suddenly create thousands of new Dentists and so inevitably the price of dental services – for those willing (or desperate) to pay to get to see a dentist sooner than those who will have the government pay for it – would lead to inflation in the price of the services
This is true of other limited supply goods and services.
So why is this current interest in MMT important for investors?
Any uptake of this sort of economic policy to cure the ills of society will lead to massive economic upheaval and would impact severely on the investment markets if it was ever implemented
It may well be causing a stir in the US but how long until these “cures” are exported around the world?
At a time when economic stimulus from monetary policy (ie lower official interest rates) appears to have reached its limit the only lever (according to MMT adherents) available to governments would be via fiscal policy (i.e. massive injections of money via budget deficits) funded by the printing presses.
If governments don’t have to worry about how they pay it back then they will likely decide to open the floodgates.

Welcome to Venezuela!

Still a bit bemused that not many commentators are grasping the true implications of this recent vote.

The Democrats threw her under a bus.

Everyone wants to comment on how this shows the Democrats lack conviction in their own plans and were too spineless to vote for their Great Leap Forward, but my take is they knew exactly what they were doing – Making AOC look like a friendless idiot.

This isn’t about the Left being two faced, this was about the Left reminding the work experience kids that the company is still run by adults.

They still want to achieve her goal, Big, REALY BIG Government!
They just don’t want to go on record as to agreeing with her inane reasons and means to achieve it.
