I have struggled to think of appropriate commentary on this, but feel I can’t say anything that is not potentially insulting to some Catholics or is overtly political, so I’ll let the story speak for itself.~ctm

Vatican archbishop: All should accept that global warming is a fact

ROME, Italy, July 19, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) – The head of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences has again inferred that denial of the controversial concept of manmade climate change equates to flat earth mentality.
“From the scientific point of view, the sentence that the earth is warmed by human activity is as true as the sentence: The earth is round!” said Archbishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo.
The archbishop has been a consistent and zealous promoter of manmade climate change as a non-negotiable Church issue, despite the status of care for the environment as a prudential matter.
Climate change ideology continues to be contested as a ploy perpetrated with manipulated data by the left to enact environmental regulations and taxes.
Even so, Archbishop Sorondo dismissed deniers of climate change in a recent Vatican Radio interview as “a small, negligible minority.”
The interview conducted in German contained the headline: “Vatican: ‘Climate change is a fact,’” and centered on reception of Pope Francis’ eco-encyclical Laudato Si’ two years after its release.
Archbishop Sorondo went on in the interview to say that human-affected climate change was considered science. He added that the pope not only has the right but also the duty to rely on science in addition to doctrine and philosophy in seeking out truth.
If the pope expresses himself on such a subject, then this was not arbitrary, he said, as the pope’s words are not restricted to the area of ”doctrine of faith and morals.”
The pope makes use of the truths of science or philosophy to not only explain to man how to get to heaven, said the archbishop, but also what he must do on earth.
All human activities have to do with ethics, the Argentinean archbishop said, so they are already within the jurisdiction of the pope.
Archbishop Sorondo is a close adviser to Pope Francis and the Chancellor of both the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. He has repeatedly welcomed pro-abortion and population control advocates to the Vatican for conferences under the pretext of the climate issue.
Last month, just before President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would pull out of the controversial Paris Climate Agreement, the archbishop likened climate ideology skeptics to flat-earthers as well.
Withdrawal from the Paris accord “would not only be a disaster but completely unscientific,” he said.
“Saying that we need to rely on coal and oil is like saying that the earth is not round,” Archbishop Sorondo stated. “It is an absurdity dictated by the need to make money.”
He has also repeatedly made the claim that those who don’t subscribe to the manmade climate change theory are in some way subsidized by the oil industry. He did so again in the Vatican Radio interview.
“Of course, some sectors that depend on the oil lobby — including some Catholic institutions! — do not agree with Laudato Si’,’” the archbishop stated. “And with this they are causing serious damage, because the climate is deteriorating — even the opponents of climate change will be among their victims, in the short or long term.”

Does the Vatican rely on coal or oil? If it is such an absurdity to do so, why haven’t they gone completely green? And what does Archbishop Sorondo use for travel or to heat and cool his residence? Does he buy indulgences or carbon credits to make up for not practicing what he preaches?
It was not your usage, but a quote, but to get pedantic. It is Sanchez Sarondo, not Sarondo. Formal Spanish surnames, mostly an upper class usage, get confusing. Like it is Pena Nieto, not Nieto (and I cannot get the tilda to work).
Not just upper class. Everyone in the Spanish speaking world uses both his or her maternal and paternal name.
Typically the father’s family name comes first, so, yes, the writer should have called him Sanchez, if she were going to use just one name in an English language article.
It is common Spanish usage, but not in the US, and not by Mexican immigrants to the US. My grandfather never used the long version Halla Cruz.
Unless the father is unknown or unrecognized, in which case the mother’s father’s name is used twice.
I don’t think anyone here is a denier of “climate change.” The climate changes constantly. What I deny is that there is credible evidence that humans are contributing to “climate change” and that reducing carbon usage would make any difference at all. Besides, I believe that the entire man-made climate change propaganda program is aimed at transferring wealth from the U.S. and other western developed countries to India, Africa, Asia and South American developing countries. It is PURELY political and has nothing to do with science…or religion for that matter.
Hello Gandhi….:)
Your comment is a very very interesting one to me.
Very very much so………very polished, clean and very well balanced……..to good to ignore it….:)
especially when the terminology of “wealth transferring” instead of something like “distribution of wealth” has being applied in your comment……..:)
hopefully I am not overestimating here……..but thank you very much for your comment….refreshing to me…..and reassuring, if I may politely put it that way.
Thanks Gandhi….
cheers.
In order for religions to survive, they need to evolve and develop. Now that the religion of AGW is proving to be highly popular, the Catholic Church, having been on the back-burner of late, needs to adapt to this new set of ‘truths’. Not much different from adopting the Northern Hemisphere Winter Solstice as the appropriate date to celebrate Christ’s birth. Would not want to leave a lot of pagans offside, would we.
I’m sorry Bishop, but I’m not gonna take the word of a man who claims to be Christian but tells me to pray to Mary for forgiveness.
Hey, Bishop! How’s that geocentric universe thing working out for ya?
The Bishop and his Pope need to get back to their jobs, saving souls.
dancing on their heels.
Most religious heads of state and top tier religious organizations are now devoid of any meaningful additions to scientific conversations and debate. That they intrude into these conversations to take sides only serves to make them even less meaningful. They do have a role to play when discussing ethics. Unfortunately that role can be pretty awful. Nearly a fourth of the world’s people follow religious organizations which adhere to the “ethic” of killing those who do not believe they way they do.
Anyone know who I email in the Vatican to be officially declared a Heretic by the Pope? 🙂
This pope and his co-actor Benedict are heretics themselves.
I’m just trying to remember the last time we had two living Popes.
While I don’t personally remember it, during the Western Great Schism, which began in 1378, there were always two and sometimes three popes at once.
That Schism figured prominently in the history of the Hundred Years War.
“…the archbishop likened climate ideology skeptics to flat-earthers as well.” < Sounds like everyone else: Gore- who is now comparing slavery to climate 'issues' . ( AND getting blowback on it) ..to cast blame and name call by association. What about the Luddites? They'd be perfect as a comparison TO AGW
I remember the LQBQUERTY crowd comparing their fight for rights to slavery too…in neither the Gore or Querty case did anyone of color think this was a fair or equal in any way comparison. Blacks must get tired of being dragged out, as an entire race, to be the whipping boy comparison- so to speak. I wonder why Gore don't choose the 1920's Suffragettes and women's struggle for the vote into the same context? Maybe he is working his way thru all injustices? When Gore or the Pope's pals gets to the mistreatment of Australian aboriginals as a comparison, then wake me up.
Charles I am Catholic. This Pope and his people are idiots. The good Lord has placed this pestilence on us. We will survive it.
In the palace coup which brought the Communist wing of the Vatican to power, conservative Benedict the 16th was lucky to escape with his life, unlike the victim of the previous such coup:

The Catholics have a long history of allowing native rituals and traditions to be practiced alongside Christian ones. They also attempt to purge them with sufficient waiting periods on the Vatican time scale of change. AGW could be counted as another native tradition with Gore as one of the colorful shaman witch doctors running around. This too shall pass out of the Vatican list of tolerances +/- 100 years. I wonder what the pause will look like then.
