Merry Christmas to all, and to all, keep up the good fight

A Happy and Merry Christmas to all WUWT readers from Josh and Anthony. It has been a fun year in the climate debate and while many who are close to me know that 2015 has been a year of great personal cost,  I hope 2016 will prove to be a year of renewal and growth. For all of our readers around the world, Josh provides this cartoon:

HappyChristmas_scr

For those few readers that prefer to wage a war of vitriol and hate in your comments here and elsewhere, or by your deeds (and you know who you are), in case you missed it, this post pretty well sums up how I and many climate skeptics deal with such things. Merry Christmas to you too.

Along those lines, the Josh-WUWT calendars are still available for a short time, you can use them to spread the climate skeptic message through humor, rather than hate.

Finally, my sincere personal thanks to everyone who has helped me through this very difficult year, be it by notes of encouragement, helping moderate the site, offering guest posts, or financial help such as getting me to AGU15 so that we could get valuable feedback on our publication, you have my sincerest and most heartfelt thanks. We have a community here that spans the globe, and that community has strength in numbers and in deeds.

Merry Christmas (or as you may say it in your country, see below) to all, and to all, keep up the good fight! – Anthony Watts

And Merry Christmas to you and yours; and a happy new year to one and all.
I note that you tell us to be of good cheer as we deal with the alarmists and their many minions and sock-puppets. For one, I will try but it is real hard sometimes.
Be of good health Anthony, and try to listen to all the facts and all the theories — and be skeptical of the theories as all good scientists are. (that last is for all of us really)

Happy Holidays = Happy Holy Days….Me? I’m very agnostic but I was taken by the reading of a young woman at Kings College festival of carols and readings when she said: He seeks not thine, but thee. [humble].
Happy Christmas, Anthony, and all who look after you.

… and dear Harry Passfield, I am quite sure that that young woman would hasten to add (upon reading your comment), even if thee, you, had been the only one, the only one who would ever believe in Him, He still would have come. Just — for — you. You really do matter that much!
Merry Christmas and have fun with your grandson and rest of the family,

John,
I say Season’s Greetings to non-Christians and Merry Christmas to Christians. Happy Holidays is too PC for me. Season’s Greetings predates the abominable PC era.
TG,
I’m from NE Oregon, too, but the balmy lowlands, where it’s currently just freezing, however I’ve strayed far from God’s Country. I gather that regular commenter here Pamela Gray also hails from where your daddy hunts or hunted.

I understand, Gloateus Maximus. Except, to be “politically” correct, in the US, since the Government’s political Office of Management and Budget has recognized “Christmas Day” a Federal Holiday, the proper greeting would indeed include the word “Christmas”. Most other US National Holidays get the adjective “happy”, such as Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Fourth of July, and we even say Happy Birthday, but traditionally we go with “Merry” instead for Christmas. So, it would appear that the “Politically” correct greeting would be “Merry Christmas”.

At a recent neighbourhood pre-Christmas get-together I spotted a copy of Tim Flannery’s latest book of climate catastrophe ramblings on the hostess’s coffee table. I resisted the temptation to “accidentally” spill my beverage on the book, not being one to waste good drink. I did leave my plate on top of the book, just to hide it from view for a little while. As you say above, we have to keep up the good fight.
Merry Christmas!

This site is the antidote to the mass of head-nodding mouth breathers who are being led by the nose by the media, and the self serving vested interests in the bogus “climate change” narrative. We’re the enlightened ones, and our obligation is to spread the truth.
As Thomas Sowell writes:
“We’re raising whole generations who regard facts as more or less optional… They’re being taught that it’s important to have views, and they’re not being taught that it’s important to know what you’re talking about”

The things most important to us often cost the most……….or at least cause us to stay committed to continually paying dearly for them. I can only imagine the price that you pay as the world biggest target for his authentic, science based views on carbon dioxide……. providing the world with it’s most widely followed skeptical blog.
Unlike the rest of us that share(and disagree with) your views here, who can pick and choose convenient times to visit, then go back to our lives, this IS your life.
The thousands of articles that have appeared here, read by many millions around the world……….for absolutely no cost to us but everything to/from you, makes you a profoundly generous human being on an elite scale……..with you at THE top.

Big green catastrophe…..and not on the news
December 23, 2015
Unstoppable California Gas Leak Being Called Worst Catastrophe Since BP Spill
(ANTIMEDIA) Porter Ranch, CA — Methane gas continues spewing, unchecked, into the air over southern California from a fractured well to an underground storage site — at such an alarming rate that low-flying planes have necessarily been diverted by the FAA, lest internal combustion engines meet highly volatile gas and, well, blow the entire area to hell.
This is, indeed, the biggest environmental catastrophe since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010; and for now, there is no way to stop it.
This methane disaster is worse than can be sufficiently described in words, because while it’s estimated well over 100,000 pounds of methane spew into the atmosphere every hour, the leak can’t be halted, at least until spring. Even then, that stoppage depends entirely on the efficacy of a proposed fix — which remains a dubiously open question.

If the escaping methane is rapidly purged from the atmosphere and/or its effects on the climate are small, that should diminish the threat from warming permafrost.

I have not been trying to flatter (just genuine praise/encouragement) or to fish for compliments, but, quite clearly, despite my intentions, that is how I come off. And there is nothing I can do about that (and still be “me”). Just a personality flaw I can’t “see.”
Thank you, .mod, for your honesty.
Since I cannot see myself as others see me (lol, you would not believe how differently I perceive myself from how you guys do! — pathetic, huh?), the only way to stop annoying you mods (and several other commenters/readers NO doubt, no doubt at all (I have data)), is to just cut out all the non-science commenting. Thanks for the video clips Janice. All the best to you…but I am not sure where the dad thing happened, I just look after my friends daughter while they are at work (Collect from school and help with maths).
Wooten is such a talent, not seen Malaman before. Both awesome. If only I had such talent I would be playing bass rather than being bored in IT. Maybe one day.
But most of my bassist inspiration comes from the likes of Waters from Pink Floyd, King from Level 42 and Squire from Yes (Now past away I believe). My bass is a Squire (Fender copy) “J” bass…and it plays well enough for me, only 4 strings though.

Hi, Patrick MJD,
Oops! (blush) I must have mixed you up with another commenter. I thought you were the guy who was doing his best to parent an ADHD son and I even prayed for you and him, lol (well, God must have chuckled at that). {sarc ON} (sly glance) Ooh, but Patrick… don’t you remember?? {sarc OFF} Don’t worry — Support Enforcement won’t be sending you a Summons for back child support. Yes, I recalled about your math tutoring of the family’s daughter — I’ll bet you ARE good at that. If you are a typical IT guy, you are a very patient and creative (and bright, that goes without saying — but I said it!! and too bad Alex, I LIKE TO COMPLIMENT PEOPLE — it is not flattery if it is TRUE) teacher. That has been my experience with IT people.
I hope that you take time (often!) to play that “J” bass (and listen to those bass greats you mentioned). I love that sound. When I had a good sound system, I always dialed up the bass and dialed down the treble a bit. Say! Have you listened to Russian or Ukrainian choral music? They usually include a basso profundo part (low, low bass) and the richness of their harmony overall cannot be surpassed.
Blah, blah, blah. Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed those videos.
Take care,
Janice

I hope this works…

It’s a bass cover (Meaning its a copy sound video for the track) of a great Level 42 track from about the mid-80’s with all the panic about acid rain etc. The bass riff is awesome…
Janice, thank you for your kind words. The girl I give care and maths lessons to does have ADHD issues too (Or is that she’s a right PITfA? Debateable.), and she is on medication for that, and it works most times, until she packs a sad-on, sheesh, watch out for that. Still a few “jabs” in the side has her giggling like an idiot (Me) and wobbling like a plate of jello (Strangely, me again). It is a rather sad story in fact. She had an operation (In the UK) when she was 2 on her heart for an issue with her aorta. She was starved of oxygen. So her physical and mental health issues are a direct result of medical malpractice.
But she still calls me Aunty Patsy! Go figure!

Patrick! Kah—oooouhl. Great bass riff. Thank you for sharing. Next time that plucky little girl gets the blues, play THAT for her — should make her smile (esp. if you dance to it, lol) … and call her “Grandpa Jillian {or whatever her name is}” — I’ve found that (from my limited first-hand experience with ADHD kids) ADHD (or just “ADHD”) kids usually have a WONDERFUL sense of humor. Yup. You proved my assertions about IT people above — that you took the time to respond to me = conscientious and kind…. and you are creative and caring (for that damaged-by-negligence child). I tell you, that is the MAIN ev1l, imo, of Government Medicine (if sovereign immunity makes the medical industry largely immune from medical malpractice). For all its egregious exceptional abuses, the American medical malpractice bar, while it cannot “make whole” a little girl like your family’s, does a lot of good (mainly by providing an incentive for excellent care… or else…, but, also by reimbursing medical expenses and providing some help with long-term care/compensation — and, imo, the cost of medical malpractice insurance (passed on to consumers, of course) is worth it).
I hope that 2016 brings not just a job, but an intellectually stimulating job that uses your skills and experience, and, most of all, your natural abilities in a wonderful new way. One door closed… another door to open… . AND A GREAT BASS-PLAYING WITH A BAND OPPORTUNITY (find a few guys… and a garage 🙂 ).
Praying for you,
Janice

One more for the road
After all the lights and all the bows
No longer promise brightly
After all the songs and all the bells
Fall silent as the night
I wish you love
Though be blushes under mistletoes
And warm hellos but embers
When all the hearths and hearty smells
And farewells fade to dim
I wish you love
As life once more in traffic flows
And heralds lose their smile
When once again time’s teller tells
To earth we must return
I wish you love
As gift the hand and heart bestows
Become but things to keep
And lines and walls and citadels
Grow real and hard again
I wish you love
To all my friends and all my foes
Of thought or word or war
To all bound souls in chains or hells
Whom I cannot set free
I wish you love
Our lives are as the candle glows
Not boxes we might flatter
Though strength my heart for breaking spells
Nor webs that hold can offer
I wish you love

In old English usage there were two types of public holiday. The days given off for celebration of things to do with the country such as the Sovereign’s birthday were called High Days . Those days that were off work for Christian festivals such as Christmas and Easter were called Holy Days. This was contracted into the phrase High Days and Holy Days . Of course the “Holy Days” after lazy usage became Holidays.
I find it somewhat amusing that the politically correct, the strict atheists and agnostics are insisting on calling Christmas a “Holy Day”. But then being politically correct was never a logical pursuit; it is controlling thought by controlling language.

Thought you all would enjoy the modern interpretation of a weather station. I present a modern automated weather station complete with a nearby overturned boat/BBQ/burn barrel/AC unit (in this case loosely described as an attached satellite dish just below the unit).

The LNB (Low Noise Block) at the focal point of the dish (The dish needs no power. The LNB gets power from the receiver, just like a normal TV antenna) would not cause any temperature difference. I don’t see any of the other items you say are there. But, yes, not good practice for weather reporting, but maybe that is where the signal was best. You can see a cable dragging off to the house in one image, which seems it might be in a radio trough.

Pamela Gray

Snow will build up on that dish (I know) and the sun reflecting off it will warm it. It could also change the ability to detect wind direction.

And the dish is the modern interpretation of debris often seen near Stevenson screens. You should check out the only other station in town. It sits atop an old windmill tower that still has some of its metal skins attached.

Actually, thinking about it and looking again (I didn’t, I sorta have other issues going on) why on earth would someone mount a dish there and have 50m(+) of coax fed in to the house (Attenuation and signal loss). A dish would not be in a radio trough mounted on the roof, and maybe with only 10m of coax to the receiver. That’s just insane.

Merry Christmas to all the millions of WUWT readers (257 million and counting!…). This site is the antidote to the head-nodding mouth breathers who are being led by the nose, by the media and the self serving vested interests pushing the bogus “climate change” scare.
Gunga Din quotes some smart folks:
“You know things. Share.” And: “Everybody’s ignorant. Only on different subjects.” Comment and help make the rest of us a bit less ignorant.
Scientific skeptics are the enlightened ones, and our obligation is to spread the Truth. The more we tell folks the truth, the more that head shaking will take the place of head-nodding (and maybe they’ll even start breathing thru their nostrils like God intended…)
To quote Thomas Sowell:
“We’re raising whole generations who regard facts as more or less optional… They’re being taught that it’s important to have views, and they’re not being taught that it’s important to know what you’re talking about.”
Too many people assume that they know what they’re talking about just because someone with a bow tie like Bill Nye says, “Climate change is real!” as if it’s a revelation. Or someone like Michael Mann with a fake Nobel Prize fabricates a scary chart. Those aren’t ‘facts’, and they’re not the truth. “Climate change is real!” is just a meaningless phrase that you could teach to a parrot.
Skeptics should demand answers. We should give the other side of the story. That’s what Anthony and WUWT do, and that’s why this is the world’s most popular climate site: all sides of the ‘climate’ debate can give their facts and opinions here. Then readers can decide. People want to make up their minds based on facts after reading all the arguments.
We should post facts and evidence on other sites, too. Post them far and wide; when people understand that what we’re currently seeing is nothing unusual, and certainly not unprecedented, they begin to question other scare stories. Knowledge makes a difference.
So thanks to Anthony and all the millions of readers and commenters here (1.6 MILLION reader comments in only 8 years!) This site is making a difference, and everyone contributes by reading, commenting, or doing both.
And to our pagan friends…
Merry Christmas! I hope Santa brought you what you always wanted… ☺ ☺ ☺
