Guest essay by Eric Worrall
Arnold Schwarzenegger has received over 100,000 likes, for a Facebook post about the alleged benefits of renewables, which included a fantasy about people who choose petrol powered cars spending an hour with the car of their choice, locked in a sealed room with the engine running, without a gas mask.
From Arnold’s post;
I don’t give a **** if we agree about climate change.
…
Renewable energy is great for the economy, and you don’t have to take my word for it. California has some of the most revolutionary environmental laws in the United States, we get 40% of our power from renewables, and we are 40% more energy efficient than the rest of the country. We were an early-adopter of a clean energy future.
Our economy has not suffered. In fact, our economy in California is growing faster than the U.S. economy. We lead the nation in manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, entertainment, high tech, biotech, and, of course, green tech.
…
There are two doors. Behind Door Number One is a completely sealed room, with a regular, gasoline-fueled car. Behind Door Number Two is an identical, completely sealed room, with an electric car. Both engines are running full blast.
I want you to pick a door to open, and enter the room and shut the door behind you. You have to stay in the room you choose for one hour. You cannot turn off the engine. You do not get a gas mask.
I’m guessing you chose the Door Number Two, with the electric car, right? Door number one is a fatal choice – who would ever want to breathe those fumes?

Schwarzenegger is wrong about renewables being “great for the economy” – as WUWT reported back in May, the cost of energy in California is having a significant impact on jobs, and is contributing to decisions by many businesses to relocate to Texas. This has become such an issue, that Californian Democrats who represent poor, working class areas recently mutinied against Governor Brown’s efforts to introduce tougher CO2 emissions targets, and sided with Republicans to defeat the bill.
But its the fantasy about people being gassed which really bothers me. The green movement has a growing track record of utterly grotesque, even murderous fantasies, and hysterical calls for their opponents to be persecuted. It seems sad that someone of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stature felt a need to add to this perversity.
Note from Anthony:
It appears the great musclehead mind has confused Carbon Monoxide, and Carbon Dioxide, something I’m no stranger to via threat from one of my own local nuts eco-activists, Sherri Quammen: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/03/22/letters-i-get-letters/
Ahnold and Sherri, they are both of the same caliber of thought.

We hoped that Arnold would be like Reagan. That turned out not to be the case and frankly I did not think it would. Reagan had many years of theory and practice as a Union Leader and Governor. Arnold just had the swagger and name recognition.
That Arnold doesn’t know much about science isn’t surprising.
Oh, hey, it’s another movie star pontificating on science!
No doubt all the lemmings will swoon.
Smooth move Arnold, coming up with a challenge that has, well, nothing to do with any issue relevant to the debate. Let’s try a better challenge, one that more closely resembles the reality of life.
o We’ll each be confined to our homes for one month, along with our entire immediate families
o Your household may only consume goods and services produced exclusively by renewable energy
o my household will only consume goods and services produced exclusively by fossil fuels
o whoever quits first has to apologize to the other for their obvious stupidity. In person. In the other person’s house.
I’m warning you though Arnie, not only will it be you and your family coming to my place to apologize in a matter of days, you’ll be naked, starving, you’ll stink to no end, and quite likely be diseased as well due to lack of clean water and sewer services. You’ll have to stand in the front yard to be hosed down before being allowed to enter. Your feet will hurt, a lot, because I live a long way away, and your stupid electric car ran out of juice not far from your home with no way to charge it again and you had to walk the rest of the way. If you made it at all.
Let’s just make it you and me Arnie, I don’t want to be responsible for any deaths in your family.
Too many of my friends on this blog seem to have allowed emotion to overcome intelligence. There’s a list of comments here that feed the memes of the Ungodly. Conan the Pygmy-Brained deserves our sarcasm and sturdily-worded rebuttals for his tissue of lies and misunderstandings about the economic and ecological effects of so-called renewables, but the Ad hom over his origins and marriage are a disgrace to these pages. Keep the high ground and argue the science and politics, people. BTW As a former NBC warfare instructor, I can assure you that military “gas” masks do not prevent CO , CO2 or NO from being inhaled, something else Arnie got wrong.

Agreed. I was in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in the UK in the 80’s…and the “Noddy suit” as it was called was and mask would not last long in a real contaminated environment.
What exactly are you referring to?
point well taken…Another disturbing thing though is Arnold’s self description as a Republican. Only that wing of the party that has come to conflate corporatism with capitalism!
In America, the rules of evidence allow evidence of conviction for other crimes (or civil causes of action) IF those crimes or offenses involved dishonesty, e.g., a conviction for theft can be used to show a general propensity to l1e. Adultery is about the biggest l1e one can act out. Schartzenadulterer’s adultery is evidence of his general propensity to l1e which many (“deserves our sarcasm and sturdily-worded rebuttals for his tissue of lies …”) on this thread have asserted.
spot on. A morally dishonest person cannot be trusted. Cheats at body building, cheats on the wife. Big surprise, not.
Thanks, FerdBerple! 🙂
I’m tempted to invoke Godwin’s Law but I suspect everyone is already thinking the worst about this asshat.
So what you’re saying is that eventually, according to ‘Godwin’s Law’ that alarmists will walk in here and compare us to holocaust deniers….Makes sense since nobody wants to explore the history of innocent Germans being rendered into a liquid streams of fat a foot deep after an endless campaign of fire bombing by the Allies which nearly brought their cities to the surface temperatures of the Sun. Don’t get me wrong, I think all war is based upon mass ignorance but mass murdering the innocent of those who were mass murdered by their government is nothing less than revenge killing. It’s like me shooting your mother in the face who helped homeless children all her life because her husband was a mass murderer even though she was a victim of her husband herself.
Does it make it right?
No, not at all
Ah – I get it. This has all been a lead-in for his next move, “Exterminator”. Ha ha ha – we’ve been punked
So Arny is going to trade in his Hummers for a Prius or a Tessla? 🙂
Dead easy to beat- have a car with autoturnoff when idling- challenge easily passed. Some of those ultracompact modern cars would produce miniscule amounts of all gases when idling.
I guess ethanol is a renewable fuel, made from foodstuff (that’s great for the starving Africans) and Palmoil, which comes from Plantations in the Asia Pacific Region where they slash and burn Rainforest, which is the habitat of Urangutans, who will have no habitat left within 10 years which is great for California’s furry hearts. Go figure …
Is the second room going to be full of chopped up birds and bats?
fine, Arnold, you stand in the hangar with the Gulfstream running…
What does his analogy have to do with climate change?
And where will the power for the electric car be found?
Arnie 6hummers and a Porsche in the garage was a better barbarian than he was a governor but, now that some of the smoke has settled, I see that he wasn’t actually wanting us to choose the deadly CO2 room; he fully expected everyone to opt for the nice clean electric room…running full speed…full of…ozone…
Good point. Electric motors with brushes create ozone. According to NIOSH, at levels as low as 5 μmol/mol (is that equivalent to 5ppm?), ozone poses an Immediate Dangerous to Life and Health. Not sure if electric cars use brushless motors or not.
It’s not his fault, he’s an idiot.
To all at WUWT
I left this post at Arnies facebook.
‘I thought the Greenhouse theory of warming was due to CO2 emissions but Arnold’s car analogy suggests it is Carbon Monoxide that we have to worry about. So if 99 Mechanics or Car Doctors told you cars emit carbon monoxide due to incomplete combustion would you believe them? That is the thing that gets you if you are in a garage with the engine running. Carbon MONOXIDE not Dioxide.’
I need some instruction and no need to pull punches as part of learning is about correction of error and I intend to go back and further elaborate at the Facebook site but I want to be on solid ground.
The main point of my post was to get the 99 mechanics or Car Doctors analogy up their noses so is the Monoxide issue OK.
I know modern cars have catalytic converters that improve emissions very well.
Is this taking the dangerous Monoxide combining it with oxygen and unburned hydrocarbons to produce CO2 and H2O to create a less dangerous emission
Is the car still emitting monoxide or CO2 or H2O?
The emission level of the car versus a Submarine full of submariners.
Have I made a goose of myself over at Facebook?
Could I have a brief and simple lesson please. Not about being a Goose but the Car Situation and I should not do this but do I I get a Gold Star and Elephant Stamp for The 99 Car Doctor thingy?
In a modern engine that is warm and has plenty of O2 in its intake, very little CO is produced; most of the carbon is oxidized to CO2.
CO is immediately lethal at 6,000 ppm whereas 50,000 ppm CO2 is endurable for a while.
Also, of course, in a sealed room, the O2 is quickly depleted, which is directly bad for the human, but also results in the engine producing a higher proportion of CO. Without contriving a separate clean air supply for the engine, CO would get you first; probably, even with such a hose, it would, too.
Arnie assumes that we would avoid the gasoline engine room as a sensible choice. He is not advocating that we be herded into a lethal space.
Arnold is a lefty fool, wonderfull at spending other people’s money, all mouth and brawn, but seldome right.
Don’t be a girlie governor.
Arnold is a few bricks short of a load if he thinks CO2 contributes to respiratory illnesses. He’s apparently ignorant of all those green companies that went under on our dime. Apparently ignorant about ethanol and the climate accounting error. Apparently ignorant about ethanol’s special pollutant: ozone – which does contribute to respiratory illnesses. Need I go on? No, it’s not good for the environment, economy, or anyone’s health. And his little fantasy? He apparently needs to be reminded he’s not the “terminator”.
Good for the economy – riiiiight: http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/30/as-many-as-fifty-obama-backed-green-energy-companies-bankrupt-or-troubled/
There used to be a contributor to the discussions here who , whenever the subject of the viability of renewables in California came up , would point out the astonishing recovery in California’s economy since the adoption of Green policies. Unfortunately I cannot recall the name so I cannot use the Search button to bring back his last comment , but he seemed adamant that well audited data justified Gov Brown’s policies that have completely reversed California’s recent economic decline.
What I’ve read is that through some non-standard accounting trick the state’s budget is now supposedly balanced.
I would be highly skeptical…like climate change, there are many factors that affect the economy – and I’m sure, like climate change, there are many results that get attributed to green policies that might be due to something else. It would be interesting to take a look at the data. 🙂
Australian writer loves Arnold’s “epic smackdown of the naysayers”:
8 Dec: BusinessInsider Australia: Simon Thomsen: ‘I don’t give a **** if we agree’: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s epic rant about climate change
Actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has long been a passionate advocate for alternative energy…
Overnight, The Terminator also took to Facebook with an epic smackdown of the naysayers titled “I don’t give a **** if we agree about climate change”…
Schwarzenegger’s critical point about the need for change is best summed up in one killer line about the fossil fuels industry: “I don’t want to be the last investor in Blockbuster as Netflix emerged.”…

MSM also loved this fact-free Arnie moment:
9 Dec: Sydney Morning Herald: Paris UN Climate Conference 2015: Arnold Schwarzenegger urges switch to vegetarian diet
Now the body-builder turned-actor-turned-politician has urged people to turn vegetarian – at least part-time – to save the planet.
“Right now people, seven million people are dying every year,” he said at climate change talks in Paris. “That is alarming and everyone in government has the responsibility to protect the people.
“They have to do something about it.”…
http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/beauty/paris-un-climate-conference-2015-arnold-schwarzenegger-urges-switch-to-vegetarian-diet-20151208-glivw3
funny thing is, Arnie is everything our CAGW-infested MSM usually loathes but, as he’s a BELIEVER, they now love him.
“…Now the body-builder turned-actor-turned-politician has urged people to turn vegetarian – at least part-time – to save the planet…”
“You hit like a vegetarian,” Arnold Schwarzenegger once told a hapless adversary — and yet now he, too, is urging people to give up meat. Talk about eating your words.
I find it almost hilarious to see my Green Leftist friends standing shoulder to shoulder with Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Pope!
So…Arnie is ultimately just another Hollywood liberal douche.
I wonder if Climate Change made him have a child with the maid. Maybe that works like terrorism.
Pope. Schwarzenegger, Prince Charles,…. I wonder why mainly rich people quote for the renewables.
WTF? Talk about faux outrage! I read the title and expected something quite a lot more outrageous than Arnie actually said.
Seriously, save the indignation for something worth sounding indignant about. Streuth!
+100
He was referring to a meme, and a well-known one. It’s a favorite tactic of theirs. Witness their fave “D”-word label, a particularly hateful reference. Stop being disingenuous. Or is it obtuse. Hard to tell sometimes.
Seriously. Head over to SkS. You’ll feel right at home.
We get the politicians that be deserve…
