The Australian Abbott government has, in the last few days, endured significant pressure from President Obama, and other committed greens, to join their efforts to chase the carbon dragon. I’m happy to report that, so far, Abbott seems to be sticking to his commitment to avoid enacting costly climate policies, such as the carbon tax.
The Age, a major Australian daily newspaper, reports that Australia has gone “missing” on climate change. “Australia has jumped from the vanguard of developed nations battling climate change, and is now an international pariah on the issue. As the Marshall Islands Foreign Minister, Tony de Brum, had reason to note this week, Australia’s ”backsliding” on climate change does not make sense and ”goes against the grain of the world”.
The Sydney Morning Herald, another Australian daily, has also reported that Australia is avoiding the Climate issue. “Climate change by contrast, was mentioned only in the context of being easier to fix once higher economic growth is achieved.”
Given the Australian Abbott government’s so far firm line on the climate issue, and the disinterest of other major CO2 emitters such as China, India, Russia and Canada, and even reports that green Europe is going cold on the global warming issue http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/08/09/europe-bails-on-green-energy/ – the probability of a meaningful international agreement on CO2 emissions seems comfortably low.

I enjoyed the part about “China agrees to reduce emissions by 45% by 2020” which when googled quickly reveals the agreement for was for up to 45% meaning of course the actual reduction will be more like same negative 50% they’re currently on trend for.
Thanks, Eric.
Yes Abbott has a spine and stands tall. So does Australia.
Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie!

‘av a good day Australia. And don’t forget the aeroguard.
Pshhhhht!
Tony Abbott is treading a fine line here but doing a great job in appeasing the great global warming believers – close to half the population remember and they all vote – and Abbott must win a second term to keep Australia on the road to economic recovery from the waste we were indulged in for the previous 6 years.
But two of his greatest allies are Tim Flannery and Mother Nature.
None of Tim’s outlandish predictions have materialised and Green’s leader Christine Milne keeps screeching “extreme weather, extreme weather, we are all going to die”, just about every day of the week and Mother Nature does not oblige
What I am really hoping for though is another trip down to the expanding Southern ice from Professor Chris Turney and his flock of faithful penguin counters. There is nothing like Aussie laughter and ridicule to snuff out a lost cause.
Tony Abbott despite labor and the loony greens attacking him all the time over climate change he will go down in history as one of our best leaders……meanwhile Bardarbunga volcano is spewing out up to 20000 tons of gases per day.http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/bardarbunga/news/48116/Bardarbunga-volcano-update-Eruption-continues-at-record-breaking-lava-output-rate.html
King of cool I am booked on the next cruise my job is to count the krill
Nice to see a leader who leads rather than follows. Here in Ireland, our Taoiseach (pronounced, tea shock) thinks ”Climate” is something you do to a mountain, but he is fully committed to handing over millions of euros to fight the myth anyway. I can guarantee it’s not because he has researched it any further than to see what everyone else is doing. This, at a time when our essential services are crying out for cash.
Eamon.
I suspect Kenny’s only going through the motions and the carbon tax is just handy extra revenue. Previous environment minister, Phil Hogan, was pretty much known to be a complete skeptic on the issue – much to the green/left chagrin.
Now you’ve done it Abbot. Nobama will see to it that you are hash tagged into oblivion.
Inevitably, there will be more Climate Bullying to come later in the year at the G20.

One of the other good things Tony Abbott has done just after winning the election was to pack up the Tim Flannery (junket) department. That saving of tax payers money has been well received. I would like to see him work on the ABC (dogs in a manger), however they will probably cry “freedom of speech” of course.
Their ABC, their speech
Translation for non OZ – they advertise as “Your ABC” /s

“Abbott is a Rhodes scholar. He’s no dummy!”
Bill Clinton is also a Rhodes scholar, http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/about/rhodes-scholars/rhodes-scholars-complete-list
dennisambler
To balance so was Kris Kristofferson, and in English literature IIRC
The Age lives and breathes left wing progressive rubbish. They worship obama and despise the ground tony abbott walks on. Obama can do no wrong and Tony can do no right (by definition apparently). Twenty years ago they used to be a fine newspaper. Now they are nothing more than a hollow shell printing out mindless propaganda.
As “The Age” Head Office used to be on Spencer Street (perhaps still is) the paper was known as the “Spencer Street Soviet”. This from many more years ago than 20.
God bless the internet. The green’s have killed millions and continue to kill millions with their policies going back to the elimination of DDT. We, the commonsense part of the world population, have a means to fight back now. Keep it up and never give up. The world need us more than they need the left.
.
I met an Aussie climate scientist in Amsterdam the other day, moaning that Abbot had sacked 150 climate scientists. He was over here trying to get another job.. While I applaud Abbot’s stand, I hope he does not just export his problem to Europe.
And on a related topic, the UK’s UKIP party has just issued a video AGAINST wind farms. It was mailed to all members. And do remember that UKIP got 28% of the vote at the last national election in the UK.
