One of the favorite smears from Dr. Stephan Lewandowsky used to try to diminish the arguments of climate skeptics is to create dodgy psuedo-scientific psychological studies with a bent on trying to prove that skeptics are conspiracy theorists. Except for the extremely gullible, such bleatings don’t appear to have any traction. But he does keep trying.
Meanwhile, right in front of his nose, there is a regular parade of conspiracy theory linkages happening daily. For example, get a load of this latest claim from Dr. Michael Mann:
You just have to laugh at the idea that the Koch brothers are paying people to write the sort of comments (27) as of this writing that appear on the Phys.org article: http://phys.org/news/2013-10-people-dont-high-climate.html
I dunno, how does one “smell” Koch in those comments? Is it anything like trained animals that can spot certain scents?
Practically every day now Dr. Mann imagines some Koch brothers connection to people who have honest disagreements about climate. Recall these recent ventures into conspiracy theory land:
Which I answer here: The other divergence problem – climate communications
It’s part of Mann’s recurring theme:Mann overboard! Pot, kettle, conspiracy edition
The reality is, Koch even contributes to Dr. Mann’s University: Oh the pain! #Kochmachine is in many American universities, including Penn State
IMHO, I think Dr. Mann needs to seek professional help for this affliction where he sees the Koch Brothers climate influence under every virtual rock and tree on the Internet. If nothing else, this affliction would make a good clinical case study for some psychologist.
Now watch, someone will alert Dr. Mann to this writing, and he’ll tweet something about it with some added smear, or retweet something from one of his followers along the same lines. It’s as sure as the sun rises in the morning, I don’t even need a computer model.

It appears that not only at Jones’ UEA & Lewandowsky’s UWA but the entire constabulary of Great Britain engage in wholesale data laundering.

On the upshot, the best evidence for their hypothesis is: Because, Koch.
That or it’s a witch-hunt for the heretics and apostates. Which is totally not religious dogma. Because, Koch.
Take your pick.
Lady in Red says: “…Michael Mann’s place in history is secure, along with that of James Hanson. They will be immortalized, just like the frauds Lysenko and Paul Kammerer (and his mid-wife toad). They will live in infamy, forever.”
If you want some real humor, watch as Wankerpedia, the inexhaustible font of all things left, white-washes Kammerer:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kammerer
wherein the falsification of Kammerer’s work was all a Nazi plot:
“Koestler surmised that Kammerer’s experiments on the midwife toad may have been tampered with by a Nazi sympathizer at the University of Vienna. Certainly, as Koestler writes, “the Hakenkreuzler, the swastika-wearers, as the Austrian Nazis of the early days were called, were growing in power. One center of ferment was the University of Vienna[5] where, on the traditional Saturday morning student parades, bloody battles were fought. Kammerer was known by his public lectures and newspaper articles as an ardent pacifist and Socialist; it was also known that he was going to build an institute in Soviet Russia. “An act of sabotage in the laboratory would have been…in keeping with the climate of those days.””
Misanthropist Mann appears to have gullibly read agenda driven journalism rather reality. Koch Industries believes

Can we just stop discussing Mann? Is there anything productive or positive to be gained from tracking his ridiculous tweets and comments and fulfilling his attention-seeking? He’s had his 15 minutes. No more unless there’s actual science to discuss. For that matter, add Gore and Lewandowsky to this scrap pile. Do I hear a second?
Second.
I’ve already wasted too much time on these ‘zeros’ that I’ll never get back.
Well, at least he doesn’t call them the “KoochBrothers”.
Paranoid schizophrenia
By Mayo Clinic janitorial staff
Signs and symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia may include:
Delusions, such as believing CO2 will poison you
Self-important or condescending manner
Key symptoms
Delusions and hallucinations are the symptoms that make paranoid schizophrenia most distinct from other types of schizophrenia.
In paranoid schizophrenia, a common delusion is that you’re being singled out for harm. For instance, you may believe that Big Oil is monitoring every move you make or that Watts is eating your lunch. You may also have delusions of grandeur — the belief that you can forecast climate, that you’re famous or that anyone could care less. You hold on to these false beliefs despite evidence to the contrary. Delusions can result in aggression or name calling if you believe you must act in self-defense against those who want to laugh at you.
fred berple: There is quite a lot of similarity between the hysteria about smoke stacks and bonafide Paranoid Schizophrenia. Reminds quite a bit of John Nash. And his statements about learning to deal with Schizophrenia:
” Then gradually I began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking which had been characteristic of my orientation. This began, most recognizably, with the rejection of politically oriented thinking as essentially a hopeless waste of intellectual effort. So at the present time I seem to be thinking rationally again in the style that is characteristic of scientists.”

Thank you! You truly made my day! 🙂
“‘Charles Koch Institute works to connect students and professionals to opportunities to advance economic freedom… These sessions include discussions and lectures as well as workshops focused on Market-Based Management®, economics and other topics.’
So, a whiff of plain anti-regulation ideology.”
I have always been frustrated by the left slant of most universities, but your little hat-tip totally put a smile on my face! There is a reason to hope!
*hugz* lolz and like totes namaste!
I’m with Kon Dealer – Anthony, sue the bastard. You’ve got piles of evidence against him – the lawyers should be salivating.
That may have been what triggered Glieck, a couple of months later, to go phishing at Heartland.
In a previous comment, some time back (which I guess is redundant since ‘some time back’ would have to be a previous comment) I wrote that I really rather like the Halloween holiday. It’s the second most popular holiday of the year and it’s actually an unofficial holiday. And think of all the wonderful decorations and representations: mice, rats, ravens, black crows and black cats, bugs, maggots, spiders, hanging bats, specters, ghouls, goblins, skeletons, grim reapers, vampires, monsters, and now we’ve got a new one . . . Lewandowsky.
‘IMHO, I think Dr. Mann needs to seek professional help for this affliction where he sees the Koch Brothers climate influence under every virtual rock and tree on the Internet.’
If Dr. Mann has to go on an ObamaCare (let’s see how long it takes before they try to change that name) website to find coverage to pay for that professional help, well, I think he’s going to be (insert foul word beginning in ‘s’) outta luck. And, especially since, who knows, thanks to ‘O’care he might’ve been reduced to part time employment status.
So it looks like the world will be stuck with a faux Nobel Prize winning, United Nations contributing, Doctoral research professoring, mob action wannabe. And that’s really what the Koch directed ire really is, isn’t it: A blind, fury driven lynch mob directed from the highest political levels. How modern and enlightened. You really are a little Mann aren’t you?
In the movie “Pretty Women” Vivian tells Edward something to the effect that he only tears things down, he doesn’t build anything. Look at the list below (name and year of birth):
Paul Ehrlich 1932
David Suzuki 1936
James Hansen 1941
Al Gore 1948
Phil Jones 1952
Michael Mann 1965
A couple of these have obtained lots of money (questionable circumstances for some?) while attaining the status of major hypocrites and being almost always wrong.
Each of these has had plenty of time to build something.
Then there are the Koch brothers:
Charles Koch 1935
David Koch 1940
They have built the U.S.A.’s second-largest privately held company and via family foundations have given away millions of dollars to charity, cancer research, arts, and science.
The time on Earth for these folks will soon pass. The Kochs have built and will be remembered for having done so. The others will be footnotes.

Yet…
My Salon twitter feed has been basting on the Tea Party as having been created back in the days of Nixon and Watergate. So I keep trying to tell them that they are quite mistaken because the Tea Party wrote the U.S. Constitution.
Smells like a cock-up* to me.
*Mild Brit colloquialism for screw up.
I hadn’t heard of the Koch Brothers but a few years ago when they became the Betes Noire of the Guardian environment pages. It was repeated incessantly that any money from these guys was tainted. They are corruptors, apparently.
This has led to a strange side effect – charitable giving has become shameful.
Recenly, I have begun to wonder if that is the real point. Charitable giivng is the only competition for a welfare state. Historically, private charity it was a compliment to a welfare state but they could be in conflict.
I’ve noticed denigration of religious charities as well because of “suspect motives”.
David in Cal says:
“With all these paranoid falsehoods on the record, I think Mark Steyn’s and the National Review’s lawyers will have a field day cross-examining Mann, if the suit gets that far.”
One would think that Mann’s lawyers would be telling him to shut his trap… but then again, they are lawyers (aka bloodsucking bottom feeders) and maybe they are looking for a bigger payday in defending Mann in a countersuit later on… working both ends against the middle.
Like water on a rock, it eventually wears the rock away.
The now constant gales of laughter and the increasing derision that is an increasingly obvious response to Mann’s supposedly serious pronouncements [ does he know of any other such form of pronouncement ? ] on the state of the climate, comments on the skeptic’s response to his science [ what science.? well maybe chicken entrails science ! ] comments on others who disagree with him or just don’t agree at all or for whom he just dislikes and / or hates with a passion plus increasing derision for his comments which are driven by an outsize ego that knows no bounds, are most assuredly wearing away Mann’s excessive hubris and his immense and pathologically inflated ego.
Such personality orders / dis-orders when they possibly collapse might well lead to a level of insanity for Mann,[ I’m actually half serious here! ]
Thats if any experts in mental states Lewendowsky might fit the bill here, will be able to pick the difference between Mann’s normal mental state and the onset of insanity..
Mann sniffs Koch.
F.A.H.,
Even if we assume every dime of the Koch money goes directly to fighting the “consensus”, it still pales in comparison to the money on the other side. From a Reuters article earlier in the week, money being spent on fighting climate change totals $359B/year, and they’re complaining that it’s down $5B from last year.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/22/climate-investment-idUSL5N0IB32X20131022
Now not all money is directly fighting AGW. Money poured into renewable energy concepts may be useful independent of the validity of CO2 causing runaway warming, but it’s clearly being promoted because of the fear of CO2-induced runaway warming.
For those that constantly pound the “fossil-fuel-lobby” meme, they conveniently ignore just how much money is on their side.
I realize that the Manns of this world believe the rich roll around in piles of money like Scrooge McDuck, but why on earth would they need to spend any money to muddy the climate waters when folks like Mann do the job for them voluntarily?
Why doesn’t Lewandowsky study this phenomenon?
