Some days, you get gifts from on high.
Dr. Michael Mann apparently still doesn’t understand how his own actions invoked the Streisand effect. So, he compares people asking questions to the larval form of insects.
Steve McIntyre tips us off to this and writes with the driest wit possible:
From time to time, we hear from climate scientists that they are limited in their responses by the dignity of their profession. The dignity to which climate scientists aspire is nicely exemplified by the following remarks of a prominent real_climate_scientist:
hey trolls who have been given marching orders to flood the comment threads here like an infestation of beetle larvae: Don’t bother! We’ve seen the mindless talking points before, and coming here to parrot them simply (a) pollutes the otherwise thoughtful discussion in the comment threads here, and (b) exposes the intellectual bankruptcy of your climate change denial zealotry.
Here’s the screencap:
I wonder, has Dr. Mann just libeled everyone whose comments he has been serially deleting? The best part is Steve McIntyre’s response, be sure to read it here.
In other news, it has now been 10 days since Mark Steyn wrote the article that ticked off Dr. Mann, and now the backlash has sent him scurrying for entomological comparisons for lack of any better arguments.
Since the Steyn article is still there, I suspect that NRO has told Dr. Mann and his attorney to “go fish”. Well, at least he’s having bait delivered.
I’m reminded of this quote from Dr. Roger Pielke Jr.:
“If Michael Mann did not exist, the skeptics would have to invent him.”
Stay classy Mike!

Trolls in the woodwork with marching orders?
I wonder if that counts as an upgrade from being labelled a termite?

I thought transformation into insects was Kafka’s theme, Mann’s themes were pride, temptation, the cost of greatness, loss of humanity corruption of body and of mind, and the descent into insanity. Oh hang on…
Opps me thinks Manny’s loosing it, though not really surprised as over the last year I have seen a total collapse of the thermsexuals tolerance and sanity they are really beginning to showing the anger and hatred that they feel for the public and it’s questions !
They would be Truly funny if they weren’t so sad .

“… jaundice, bile, and gangrene ..” at Law
“… courtesy, truth, justice, humanity, and compassion …” have no place at the trough created from the ruins of an environmentalism that was wrested from the Hippies by corporations and politicians who profit by twisting the values away from curable problems to imagined catastrophes.
The Hippies didn’t notice it happening, were not capable of preventing it anyway and now defend it in the face of it’s anti-humanity.
I despair.
I wasn’t putting you down, I was offering constructive criticism, in order to make your little ditty catchier. I made the same offering for the same reason with a revised title for Bob Tisdale’s upcoming book and he was appreciative–and changed it. That’s the way to be.
If we keep piling on Dr. Mann, it will cause his pressure to increase. By the Gas Laws, this will cause his temperature to increase. This will enable him to say, “I told you so!”. Careful!

New SLAAPstick Courtroom Capers as Michael Mann Falls Foul Again
EXCERPT:
Media war of words erupts in anticipation of another global warming courtroom battle. We take time to see how latest events connected to Climategate’s controversial scientist Michael Mann stack up alongside Mann’s legal shoot out versus Dr. Tim Ball.
Last week Pennsylvania State University (PSU) popped back up on the notoriety radar thanks to lingering fallout over their jailed child sex felon, football coach Jerry Sandusky. PSU’s other alleged bad boy, climatologist Michael Mann, came out with all legal guns blazing after popular right-wing writer, Mark Steyn and the National Review wrote of the parallels in the “whitewashes” PSU investigations performed separately on Sandusky and Mann. The recent and hard-hitting Freeh Report is damning of PSU’s hierarchy.
With talk of more lawsuits flying, observers are now wondering how an earlier Michael Mann face off with Tim Ball is shaping up one year on. Readers may recall that Ball’s whimsy that Mann belongs in “the State Pen., not Penn. State” triggered the first of what now may become a series of desperate SLAAP lawsuits.

Dr. Mann:
“Meet the Beatles” — and get yourself a Ticket to Ride.
[snip . . OTT sorry . . kbmod]
I’ve always considered Mann to be a bully, which would imply that he would back down when threatened. However, past behavior is a better indicator of behavior – he sued Ball and so he will sue NR.
On the other hand, maybe he has learned from his mistakes (like a typical climate scientist), or he has realized Steyn is a pitbull, and so he won’t continue with this foolishness.
Mann is too stupid to even understand what he has said is so wrong. Can you imagine Stephen Hawking saying something like this? I can’t even imagine Richard Dawkins coming out with something like this and he’s another one that allows his arrogance to get in the way of his brain.
Hey, some improvement, finally! We’re now upgraded to beetle larvae, from the previous label of holocaust denier. Thank you, Michael Mann!
I think it’s wrong to call Michael Mann the “Jerry Sandusky of Climate Change”. What Mann did with his pseudoscience is much worse, and is affecting people and economies all around the world in a horrible way. Because of Mannian science, many senior citizens can’t afford to pay their gas bills during winter and are FREEZING TO DEATH. Mannian science = crimes against humanity.
What I want to know is: How does Michael Mann sleep at night? The only way, I think, is if Mann is delusional and believes his own crap (just like Al Gore) or has no conscience whatsoever.
By the way, could this be the opportunity the Climategate hacker has been waiting for? We know the hacker has an encrypted batch of unread Climategate emails, what if the hacker is playing the long game? Maybe the hacker is waiting for Mann to commit to a high profile legal suit, before releasing the final batch of emails. Mann would be well and truly f@ur momisugly@@ur momisugly@@ur momisugly then.
I’m calling it now: Mann won’t have the balls to sue Steyn, too many dead carcasses (infested with beetle larvae) hidden in his Mannian Science closet.
For people like Mann and his ilk, we need to coin a new term: climate militant .
When DOES he find time to do, you know, research (or whatever he does at Penn State) – given all of his blogging and tweeting…
@ur momisugly Frank K.
“Climate miscreant”? You’ll find them at a ‘gathering of the ilk’.
General:
re:lawsuits. The ratio of lawsuits threatened to lawsuits actually prosecuted is no less than oodles:1. The process of discovery keeps a lot of cage-rattlers from following through, the economic realities of legal action short circuit another bunch, and a third group jumps off the wagon when their own barrister tells them their case is hopeless!.
Since some beetle larvae chow down on rotten wood, could you call the hockey stick a grubstake?
Okay, that was awful.
On a couple of levels…
Since we’re now beetle larvae, that means there are people who think we’re delicious when dipped in chocolate.
And there’s the concept for the 2013 WUWT “Meet the Crew” calendar fundraiser.
(@ur momisugly Bill Tuttle: And that is how to be awful, on a couple of levels.)

It’s pretty funny that you still don’t understand what the “Streisand effect” refers to. She wanted to conceal something; Mann wanted to expose something. While you were busy condoning the article which equated climate science with child abuse, you were doing exactly what Mann wanted, and bringing utter disrepute on yourself and all who associate with you.
================================================================
Did you forget the “sarc tag”? The last thing Mann wants is to be exposed. Those in the know at Penn State covered covered for Sandusky to protect PSU’s reputation. Many of those people are the same ones who “cleared” Mann after Climategate. For the same reasons? He’s terrified that he will be reinvestigated.
The only “equating” has to do with the motives of those who covered for Sandusky and cleared Mann.
@kbmod, I disagree. What actually took place at PSU in recent years was OTT and the NCAA concurred.
While the Manniac is keeping all but his most devoted fans away from his Facebook page, and condemning the rest of us as “beetle larvae, I just had a nutty real-life experience with a couple of McKibben fans who are sooo concerned about “climate change” that they want a rapid population decrease among humans asap:
[cross-post with BH] I unwillingly overheard a few minutes of two guys so concerned about climate change, talking at the next table in a coffee shop just now…. they are big eco-freaks and McKibben fans, plus deep ecology, the whole bit. One of them started talking about how
*clearly implying smart eco-freaks like [us]…..
For once in my life I decided I was not going to let such b.s. pass unchallenged, even if I had to be “rude” — I chewed them both out loudly in front of the whole coffee shop, said “what you are saying you want is for 1.5 billion or more people to die soon to suit your ideological needs!” They were embarrassed of course, but the other guy said “we weren’t saying we were going to DO it” as though that made all the difference in the world. They want it but as long as they don’t ‘do’ it that’s ok, then.
I didn’t linger for discussion, since they did not seem like people one could have a reasonable discussion with, and I’m sure they thought me intolerably “rude” for objecting loudly to wishing for the imminent deaths of 1.5+ billion people.
Perhaps at least they will think a bit more about where their views have taken them, but more likely they will just write me off as a rude rube who is not one of their “smart ones” worthy of survival.
RE:
I don’t mind being called all these names, but the ruthless mixing of metaphors really hurts. In the interest of better tweeting, I offer the following version, which melds all the allusions into a single coherent conceit:
O.k., so it’s a bit strained. And it doesn’t really capture the vitriol. I’ll work on it.
We all know what insect Larvae like to feed on, it begins with S.
Your ongoing ad hominems attacks on individual scientists is the main reason why I don’t believe climate skeptics.
If you’ve got an argument, present it. Dr Mann has made valuable contributions to paleoclimatology, and is rightly respected and recognised. But there are hundreds of thousands of papers on climate science. The science does not become false if you don’t like dendroclimatology, and it certainly doesn’t become false if you don’t like Dr. Mann.
